The country's <keyword id="21969771" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="airport-industry" source="keywords">airport industry</keyword> is projected to report a <keyword id="20385116" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="profit-before-tax" source="keywords">profit before tax</keyword> of <keyword id="21969772" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="USD-1-3-billion" source="keywords">USD 1.3 billion</keyword> in the current financial year. The profit is anticipated to be Rs 256.1 (USD 3.1) per passenger in the fiscal ending March 2025, aviation advisory firm CAPA India said while giving projections at its <keyword id="21969773" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="aviation-summit" source="keywords">aviation summit</keyword> in the national capital on Friday. In the current fiscal, <keyword id="21969774" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="passenger-throughput" source="keywords">passenger throughput</keyword> at Indian airports is estimated to rise to 404.9 million. Out of the total, 81.1 per cent will be domestic and 18.9 per cent will be international traffic, it said. As per the report, the <keyword id="20006900" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Airport-Authority-of-India" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Airport Authority of India" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Airport Authority of India">Airport Authority of India</keyword>'s (AAI) profitability is likely to remain robust in FY2024 and FY2025. "The topline will grow due to an increase in aeronautical revenue along with the receipt of revenue share from the recently privatised six non-metro airports, without having to incur any expense associated with it - resulting in higher profitability," it added. The industry's profit before tax is expected to be USD 1.3 billion in this fiscal. "India's airport operators are forecast to register Rs 359.8 billion (USD 4.3 billion) in revenue for FY2025, representing a growth of 14.8 per cent y-o-y from FY2024," CAPA India said. Noting that airport infrastructure at metros and non-metros is ahead of demand, it said there is an ongoing USD 11 billion pipeline of investment, including in Tier 2 and Tier 3 airports. Airport industry to see profit before tax of $1.3 billion this fiscal

The company's losses in the April-June period of 2023 were Rs 267 crore, according to an exchange filing. Revenue from operations for the quarter under review was Rs 1,644 crore against Rs 1,243 crore in the same quarter of the previous fiscal, according to the filing. The Bengaluru-based firm said its total expenses during the first quarter grew to Rs 1,849 crore compared with Rs 1,461 crore in the June quarter of FY24. The company made its market debut earlier this month. The company in a statement said its automotive segment (E2W) posted a strong improvement in EBITDA (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization) margin and is close to EBITDA breakeven. The quarter witnessed the highest-ever deliveries of vehicles by the company at 1,25,198 units as against 70,575 units delivered in the same period last year, <keyword id="4393078" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ola-Electric" source="Orion">Ola Electric</keyword> Mobility said. The company also said it ramped up deliveries of its mass-market scooter portfolio (S1 X portfolio) during the quarter which helped accelerate the growth, adding that the existing product portfolio also saw strong demand which continued growth momentum throughout the quarter. According to Ola, the increasing scale of operations has benefited the company in the form of lower manufacturing costs and supply chain optimization. These benefits of scale are further amplified by the company's scalable platform-based product development and manufacturing technology that results in high degrees of commonality across its products, it said. The company also announced on Wednesday the integration of its cells in its vehicles by the first quarter of next fiscal. Ola said it will launch its electric motorcycle portfolio across mass and premium segments during its annual flagship event on August 15, 2024. Here, it was all about super high monetary stakes, lightning-fast trade deals, and bucketloads of money shifting hands every single second. This wilderness lured millions of individuals with the promise of super duper high returns. But, at what cost? Welcome to the unforgiving, ultra-risky wild west of <keyword id="19991165" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-equity-markets" source="keywords">Indian equity markets</keyword> called the <keyword id="145718" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Futures-and-Options" source="Orion">futures and options</keyword>. Here, everyone seems to just fly right through the bright red-flagged warnings of financial risks to earn even a fraction of these promised returns. Most burn themselves in the process, but carry on nevertheless, as if nothing ever happened. <h2>Chasing the cloudy profits</h2>The data conclusively proves that every 9 out of 10 individuals only lost their hard-earned money in this land. But hey, what do the numbers know? Some hide their losses out of shame, some out of fear. The proponents, meanwhile, proudly boast unusually high returns on their investments, some open social media channels while others encourage their friends and family to take the plunge. Naturally, news of this unstoppable and humongous en-masse migration to the F&amp;O (futures and options) town has reached sheriff <keyword id="19901201" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="SEBI" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="SEBI" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="SEBI">SEBI</keyword>, galvanising them into action. After all, it was time to put a leash on this madness and save the common man. The inhabitants of this town doubled in the last 2 years, from 51 lakh in FY22 to 96 lakh in FY24—99.8% of whom were small and mid-income traders. But profits? Well, that's a different, rather completely absent story. <h2>Que Sera Sera, much?</h2>A recent report by SEBI (Securities and Exchange Board of India) that studied profits and losses made by traders in the equity derivatives segment between FY22-24 exposed the mad mania of futures and options trading in India, especially since the pandemic. Per the report, 91.1% of individual traders, or about 73 lakh traders had only lost money trading in futures and options in FY24. Between FY 22-24, over 1 crore traders, or about 92.8% of individual traders, had lost Rs 2 lakh each. But once bitten, twice shy? Well, not in this case. More than 75% of individuals, who had only made losses trading in F&amp;O in FY22 and FY23, continued to trade vigorously in FY24 as well, without any changes in the bottom line, which remained deep in red and negative. So, then all these traders must be uber-rich, with tons of cash and not much care to spare? Nope. 76% of traders in the F&amp;O space in FY24 had an annual income of less than Rs 5 lakh. 2 years ago, their share stood at 71%. And their choice of poison? Options! In FY24, 60% of traders made losses trading in futures, but a whopping 91.5% burnt their funds trading in options. Mind you, futures are riskier than options. With futures, which require significant capital investment, the buyer and seller both are contractually bound to adhere to the pre-determined strike price of the futures or options contract, irrespective of whether the prevailing prices are higher or lower (and thus, resulting in losses for either the buyer or seller). With options, since this adherence ain't necessary, individuals end up taking debt to take highly leveraged positions while trading here. <h2>Scale of the explosion</h2>Anyone who trades even infrequently will tell you that a demat account is the mitochondria or powerhouse of the trading cell. As of August 2024, India had over 17.1 crore <keyword id="20957284" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="demat-accounts" source="keywords">demat accounts</keyword>, which are a prerequisite for trading in the markets. India is the 9th biggest country in the world, in terms of total demat accounts. Did you know that our demat accounts are at par with the entire population of Bangladesh? Talk about scale! Just 4 years ago, in March 2020, this number was a mere 4 crore. Naturally, the total F&amp;O turnover on both <keyword id="20004725" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NSE" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="NSE" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="NSE">NSE</keyword> and BSE has hit the roof, and also broken it. As of October 4, 2024, the total futures and options turnover on NSE stood at a massive Rs 4,78,27,27,750.30 crore. As of September 2024, India's STT mop-up had gone past Rs 26,000 crore. Traders have to pay STT whenever they buy or sell any security in the market. So, more trading brings in more STT, and hence, more revenue for the government, so they're not really complaining. After all, this is certainly what they'd call enviable growth. As of August 2023, our STT collection stood at about Rs 21,599 crores. And in FY20-21, India's STT collection had been Rs 16,000 crore. If only our salaries also managed to grow at this rate! <h2>So, what's happening?</h2>Two things. One, it's the big bulls who are raking in all the moolah. And it's the younger lot (those aged under 30) who are propping them up for this. In FY24, 43% of individual traders in the market were less than 30 years of age. In just one year, this number has swelled by 12 percentage points from just 31% of individual traders. But who says ageing is bad? Wrinkles and silver hair seemingly have a propensity of incurring lesser losses in the market. In FY24, only 79% of traders aged above 60 years made losses, as compared to 93% of those aged below 30. Small and mid-income traders, which make up 98% of the total trader base, witnessed average losses per person of Rs 65,000 and Rs 1.5 lakh in FY24 in futures and options, respectively. The winner here? Clearly, the big bulls, who declared an annual income of over Rs 1 crore, ended up with average profits of Rs 96,000 per person this year. <h2>What’s the sheriff up to?</h2>The government has finally swung into action, hiking the STT rate for F&amp;O during this year’s budget. Effective October 1, 2024, the STT on futures stands at 0.02%, up from 0.0125%. For options, it was upped to 0.1% versus 0.0625% previously. Small margins, but huge impact oncoming. Says Puneet Sharma- CEO and Fund Manager at Whitespace Alpha, “SEBI aims to enhance market stability while safeguarding investor interests, reflecting the regulator's intent to balance risk management with market participation”. But this might come with its own share of challenges, too. “Stricter norms around leverage, transparency, and capital adequacy could limit the ability of investors to determine their own risk appetite, thereby stifling innovation in trading strategies. Over-regulation in an environment that thrives on strategic flexibility and creativity could dampen the market’s dynamism, affecting India's competitiveness in the global derivatives landscape”, he observes. SEBI recently came out with a set of guidelines that aim to thwart <keyword id="19972907" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="retail-investors" source="keywords">retail investors</keyword>' participation in futures and options and hinder them from taking undue risks. Here's a quick recap of what's to come for the residents of the F&amp;O town Margin Requirements: To battle the high volatility and chaos which is generally seen on expiry days(i.e the last mandated date, post which an option becomes invalid), SEBI will put in place an extreme loss margin (ELM) of 2% for all open short options on the day of expiry. Translation? Traders will need to pony up more cash upfront, leaving them with fewer funds to take on risky bets. It ain't a choice: No more of one expiry every single day! Going ahead, an exchange like BSE or NSE will just be able to offer weekly expiries, that too, only on one benchmark index, as opposed to an entire buffet it currently offers. At present, NSE offers weekly options contracts for its financial index, bank and midcap indices. But say goodbye to this, and hello to derivatives on only 1 index per exchange. Raising the bar: Effective November 30, 2024, the minimum contract value for index derivatives will be upped to Rs 15 lakh, from the present Rs 5-10 lakh. The hope is that by making it ultra-expensive to enter these trades, investors will be dissuaded from taking on risky trades. Pay upfront: Starting February 2025, those trading in options will have to pay the entire options premium upfront, even before their trades are executed. This is because options generally carry very high leverage, and paying a significant sum upfront can force traders to think twice. Invigilation Pro Max: Starting April 1 2025, to make sure that the number of positions for equity index derivatives does not slyly slip over the mandated limit, especially on expiry days when trade volumes are huge, the exchanges will have to take a minimum of 4 position snapshots randomly. The question is, will these injections of sobriety be enough to calm down the steroid-fed bull of the futures and options market in India? Well, only time and market turnover will tell! "At Rs 1,189 crore, growing 31 per cent YoY (year-on-year), the company reported its highest ever and 19th consecutive quarter of PAT growth on the back of strong operational performance and execution excellence across all its businesses of generation, transmission &amp; distribution, and renewables," Tata Power said in a statement. According to the statement, these businesses contributed 84 per cent of the PAT (net profit) in Q1FY25, compared to 72 per cent in the same period in FY24. The statement showed that the consolidated net profit before exceptional items was Rs 906 crore in the quarter ended June 30, 2023. The company's revenue rose 12 per cent YoY to a record high of Rs 16,810 crore (from Rs 15,003 crore in Q1 FY24), and EBITDA grew 11 per cent to Rs 3,350 crore in the reported quarter (from Rs 3,005 crore in Q1 FY24). EBITDA refers to earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization. "All our businesses have grown profitably on the back of operational efficiency, execution excellence, and sustained business momentum," said Praveer Sinha, CEO and Managing Director, Tata Power. He informed that the planned capex for this financial year is Rs 20,000 crore and the company is committed to adopting and leading the new and emerging clean energy technologies, including pumped hydro projects, hydropower projects in Bhutan, and opportunities to develop small modular nuclear reactors as the government policy evolves. The company has recorded a capex investment of Rs 4,000 crore in Q1FY25. It has a clean and green installed capacity of 6.1 GW as of Q1FY25, accounting for 41 per cent of the capacity, with another 5.3 GW under execution. The combined order pipeline for utility-scale EPC and solar rooftop, including group captive, is Rs 15,500 crore. Tata Power is poised to garner 20 per cent market share in the residential rooftop segment on the back of its new solar manufacturing facility and strong pan-India channel partner network, it said. As for rich entrepreneurs who aren't ready to make a move, they can still save on taxes with the right lawyer.By creating a special kind of trust, business owners can take advantage of the loose tax laws of other states. Instead of selling a business outright, they transfer their shares to an incomplete non-grantor trust set up in a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-states-tax-haven-billions-hidden-untaxed-wealth-assets-2022-9">tax-haven state</a> such as Nevada. When the shares are sold, the trust collects the proceeds without paying any state income or capital-gains taxes. ING trusts are powerful tax-avoidance tools, so much so that New York and California have enacted laws to render them useless for state residents. California closed the loophole in 2023, estimating it would increase tax revenue by $30 million that year and $17 million each following year.Each state also has its own provisions to navigate, which makes setting up INGs cumbersome. However, Bank of America's Timothy Herbst said it could still be worth it in states without sky-high income-tax rates."That trust can grow conceivably without any state income tax," the wealth-strategy executive said. "That's a significant savings even in a state like North Carolina at 4.5%. It's not necessarily a huge income tax, but you look at a very large portfolio growing over decades, that can be real significant savings."<h2 id="a0857d85-806e-4e72-a9da-646cab9ef538">Here is how ING trusts work</h2>ING trusts come in different flavors. Nevada and Delaware are popular states for domiciling ING trusts, where they're referred to as "NINGs" and "DINGs," respectively. However, Wyoming and South Dakota are also options as they do not tax trust income or capital gains and protect trust assets from creditors.The person who creates the trust, otherwise known as the settlor, does not have to reside in that state, but the trust should be administered by a third party who does.Here's an example of how an ING trust can work.ING trusts are still subject to federal capital gains taxes, but the ultrawealthy users of INGs would likely be subject to that burden anyway. For a centimillionaire, it's not hard to reach the top rate of 37%, which applies to incomes above $578,126."These are superrich people," Bob Lord, a senior advisor on tax policy for the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/patriotic-millionaires-want-wealth-tax-congress-reconciliation-build-back-better-2022-7">Patriotic Millionaires</a>, said. "They're still taking in enough to get to the 37% bracket."Furthermore, INGs can be used to take advantage of a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/qsbs-qualified-small-business-stock-startups-criteria-taxes-2019-12">tax perk</a> for early shareholders that exempts at least $10 million in profits from the federal capital-gains tax. Steve Oshins, a Nevada lawyer, said founders could double their exemption by setting up an ING trust."This trust can serve as a second taxpayer so that the individual can get a second $10 million exemption," he said. "This can apply even if they don't live in a state with a state income tax."For the ING trust to pass muster with state authorities, there should be multiple beneficiaries in addition to the settlor and their spouse. Since beneficiaries do have to pay state income taxes — if applicable — when they receive distributions. For this reason, lawyers advise that clients take as few distributions as possible and let the assets grow in the trust for their children or future generations."It is usually better that the client knows that distributions won't be coming back to him or her or to their spouse," Herbst said. "If they did need those distributions, then it probably is not going to be the right strategy."That said, sometimes taking a distribution makes sense if there is financial need or the client has moved to a low-tax state since setting up the ING trust, Oshins said."You just have to look at each fact pattern on its own and make the right decision," he said.<h2 id="68a845c4-1176-4c9e-871e-cd1aab5eb265">Buyer beware</h2><ol><li>ING trusts can't be used to avoid state taxes on salaries or rental income.</li></ol>ING trusts cannot be used to defer income taxes on salaries or income from tangible assets in the state. That income, referred to as source income, is subject to state taxes.For instance, Griffith said, an Ohio resident cannot avoid state or local taxes on income from rental properties in the state even if they transfer ownership of the properties to an ING trust in South Dakota.For clients in states with aggressive tax authorities, Griffith recommends they step away from their business' day-to-day operations and collect a minimal salary before transferring their interests to the ING trust."What you really need to do is become essentially just a shareholder, be, as a business owner, somebody who says, 'I am just receiving dividends from this company. I own C-corp stock,'" he said. "In many states, that becomes non-source income."<ol start="2"><li>Setting up an ING trust is like threading a needle.</li></ol>These trusts have to be structured carefully to avoid <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/real-estate-gift-tax-avoidance-trusts-wealth-planning-rich-inheritance-2023-5">triggering estate taxes of as much as 40%</a> while keeping the income-tax advantages. In addition to navigating the laws in the home state and the tax-haven state, the settlor has to retain certain rights and relinquish others. For instance, the settlor can't have the ability to compel distributions but should have the right to name beneficiaries at death."It's inherently complicated," Griffith said. "You've got to have a fairly sizable transaction to make the juice worth the squeeze."<ol start="3"><li>The trust has to be set up well before the business is sold.</li></ol>It is easier for a state tax authority to pursue income from the sale of a business if it is done shortly after the ING trust is established. Griffith recommends at least a year's delay, but it is the biggest challenge for clients, he said."They're like, 'Oh, I don't want to fund the trust until we know we're going to sell.'" he said. "You have to do it in advance. And if you do, those are the ones that I've seen that have been really successful."

At ₹100 crore, OYO posts FY24 as maiden profitable fiscal: Founder

The company's revenue jumped up by 2.2% on a quarter-on-quarter basis and a 5.4% on a YoY basis, reaching Rs 62,613 crore for April-June 2024, as opposed to Rs 61,237 crore in the quarter before. The company's PAT (<keyword id="19933742" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="profit" source="keywords">profit</keyword> after tax) saw a marginal dip on a QoQ basis of 3.2%, reaching Rs 120.4 billion. The company TCV (total contract value) or order book for the quarter dipped significantly by 37.1% to $8.3 billion, also registering a fall of 18.6% on a YoY basis. <h2>Dip in attrition, rise in employee count</h2>However, the company managed to add 5,452 employees to its workforce, as opposed to losing 1,759 employees during the previous quarter. This takes the company's total workforce to 6,06,998. Its attrition rate, at 12.1% this quarter, also came down from 12.5% from the previous quarter. Per the company, AI Cloud, Cyber Security and Enterprise Solutions led their growth this quarter. The company also saw a YoY growth (in constant currency terms) of 61.8% in its India markets, jumping from 4.9% in Q1FY24 to 7.5% in <keyword id="22373996" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Q1FY25" source="keywords">Q1FY25</keyword>. TCS Q1 results 2024: Contract values, net profits take a hit as PAT, employee count sees hike

India Infrastructure Finance Company Ltd (IIFCL) on Wednesday reported a 44 per cent jump in standalone <keyword id="19942166" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="net-profit" source="keywords">net profit</keyword> to Rs 1,552 crore for the fiscal ended March 2024 aided by an increase in <keyword id="20107418" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="lending" source="keywords">lending</keyword> and moderation in <keyword id="19936329" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bad-loans" source="keywords">bad loans</keyword>. The state-owned infrastructure finance company had earned a net profit of Rs 1,076 crore in the previous fiscal. The company recorded the <keyword id="20025887" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="highest-ever" source="keywords">highest-ever</keyword> profit, recovery, sanction and disbursement furthering turnaround performance that began three years ago, IIFCL managing director PR Jaishankar said while announcing annual financial numbers. He said, for the first time, the profit before tax has crossed Rs 2,000 crore. During the year, profit before tax has increased to Rs 2,029 crore as against Rs 1,076 crore in the previous year. The company continued to add value as its net worth increased 11 per cent to Rs 14,266 crore in 2023-24 from Rs 12,878 crore in the preceding fiscal. During the year, he said, the company posted record performance with the highest-ever sanctions and disbursements at Rs 42,309 crore and Rs 22,356 crore, respectively. The cumulative sanctions and disbursements stood at Rs 2.5 lakh crore and Rs 1.28 lakh crore, respectively, as of March 31, 2024. Going forward, he said, the company has significant scope to further improve loan growth and expects to grow at 16-18 per cent. To fund business growth, he said the company plans to raise over Rs 30,000 crore during the current financial year. With regard to asset quality, IIFCL has brought down gross Non-Performing Assets (NPAs) to 1.61 per cent from 4.76 per cent a year ago. The net NPA of the company too declined to 0.46 per cent from 1.41 per cent in the year-ago period. During the current year, he said, the net NPA would be either zero or nearly zero. The Provision Coverage Ratio (PCR) in the last fiscal increased to 71.51 per cent from 70.48 per cent, Jaishankar said. IIFCL has funded close to 760 infra projects worth Rs 14 lakh crore till March 2024. IIFCL profit rises 44% to highest-ever of ₹1,552 crore in FY24

But when Oswald decided to launch a small business in the fall of 2022, the couple liquidated some of their assets to fund the company, throwing their financial planning to the wind.With fewer than five weeks until Election Day, Vice President Kamala Harris is <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kamala-harris-small-businesses-tax-breaks-cut-red-tape-2024-9">making a targeted pitch to entrepreneurs</a> like Oswald, who are burdened by startup expenses. She even mentioned a key proposal in her opening answer at the presidential debate: expand the small business tax credit 10-fold, from $5,000 to $50,000.In a pamphlet on her economic plan, dubbed the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-you-need-to-know-about-kamala-harris-opportunity-economy-2024-9">"Opportunity Economy,"</a> Harris explains that she would let business owners take advantage of the $50,000 tax deduction right away or a few years after launching, to help lower taxes once they start turning a profit. The proposal, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/harris-added-policy-website-before-trump-debate-venture-capital-startups-2024-9">like many of her others</a>, would need <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kamala-harris-senate-races-ted-cruz-rick-scott-2024-9">congressional</a> approval.Oswald told Business Insider the credit would have been "invaluable" in getting Brisa Systems, which offers powered drying racks, off the ground.<h2 id="7006e4c2-613d-4eb9-8fc4-ad020faacaad">Harris' proposal shifts the tax timeline for entrepreneurs.</h2>Tax experts told BI that enacting the credit would mean a change in timing more than anything else. Under current law, small businesses can deduct up to $5,000 in expenses immediately and must deduct any future expenses against their income over 15 years. Harris' proposal would let entrepreneurs deduct more money quickly.Owners have expenses before even launching their business, and the deduction would help cover those costs.Rhett Buttle, the co-executive director of Small Business Roundtable and a former business advisor for President Joe Biden, told Business Insider that startup costs accumulate in three primary areas: marketing, basic equipment, and hiring.For Oswald, most early costs have been in manufacturing and intellectual property services. Taylor McCleneghan, who launched her product development company, Small Shop LLC, in 2018, named inventory and marketing as the biggest upfront costs. Both women are based in the Chicago area.<div type="image" title="Kamala Harris at a campaign event about small businesses" height="3439" width="5159" msid="113963121" hostid="261" sizebytes="769310"></div>Brett Theodos, a senior fellow at Urban Institute who specializes in small business loans, told BI that entrepreneurs would "love" to be able to deduct more of those expenses right away. Moving up the timeline would, he said, make many feel less strapped for cash from the very outset.And there's another potential upside, according to Garret Watson, a senior policy analyst at the nonpartisan Tax Foundation. Small businesses would likely benefit from getting the deduction more quickly because of inflation, he said.Many entrepreneurs are psyched about the effort. Theodos struggled to think of a reason why they wouldn't want this, and Buttle said that those he works with are overwhelmingly excited about the plan.McCleneghan, of the Small Shop, said having access to a $50,000 tax deduction early on would have allowed her to do better long-term planning. With the expanded tax deduction, Oswald said she might not have had to divest retirement funds or take out lines of credit."Getting money in the hands of entrepreneurs sooner is going to allow them to hire, to get equipment, to get a space, to pay off some debt, to pay themselves," Theodos said. "So it's meaningful to allow them to accelerate the deduction of startup expenses."But while small business owners may jump at the opportunity for more early cash flow, where this money would come from is more unclear. McCleneghan herself acknowledged that the details seem hazy.<h2 id="af50011b-34e9-4f5e-9a3b-b001ea7f148b">Despite the flashy numbers, the proposal likely wouldn't have a significant impact on the federal budget.</h2>Though $50,000 sounds like a big-ticket promise, the experts BI spoke to said Harris' proposal actually wouldn't make a big dent in the federal budget. The Tax Foundation, where Watson works, examined cost estimates from prior expansions and found that the proposal would cost about $24.5 billion over 10 years."Relative to the federal government's budget and spending, it's very small," Watson said. "This $25 billion number is in the context of a tax plan for the Harris campaign that would raise about $5 trillion over 10 years. So you're talking about orders of magnitude more money on the tax hike side."<div type="image" title="Kamala Harris and Mike Johnson during the State of the Union speech" height="4000" width="6000" msid="113963120" hostid="261" sizebytes="522916"></div>Some of the loss, he said, stems from the likelihood that certain entrepreneurs will use the deduction and then go out of business. Since the proposal changes when businesses can deduct rather than how much they deduct, it will cost some money, but not "big money," Theodos said.And the proposal could help spur growth, if it becomes law. According to a study from the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2024/04/22/a-look-at-small-businesses-in-the-us/">Pew Research Center</a> published in April 2024, small businesses employ nearly half of the country's private sector employees.Theodos called small businesses "essential" for the US economy, and Buttle said they're a<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/harris-sec-ftc-khan-gensler-crypto-regulation-biden-warren-2024-9"> crucial source of innovation</a>. But the tax experts said the full potential economic impact of the proposed expansion is still up in the air."The question is, will this significantly contribute to a startup boom or really change the needle there or move the needle there? I think that's a reasonable question. It's up for debate, particularly because this is such a narrow provision," Watson told BI, while noting that giving businesses deductions is generally a good policy.If the policy did spur more development, though, Mary Hansen, an economics professor at American University and co-director of the nonpartisan Institute for Macroeconomic and Policy Analysis, said it would eventually have a net positive impact on government revenue.As of now, Harris' promise is just that — a promise.Should she win the election, Congress would need to pass legislation to turn her expanded tax deduction idea into a reality. Despite the prevailing congressional gridlock, all of the experts BI spoke with said small businesses are a rare point of potential bipartisan agreement. The Pew Research study found 61% of small businesses are majority-owned by men and, as of 2021, 85% were majority-white owned."We're talking about community businesses, micro-businesses, businesses where the founder doesn't have as much net worth," Theodos told BI. "Everybody can benefit from $45,000, but the question is, who is that making the critical difference for?"

If you're selling Nvidia stock with a $10,000 gain, you can pair that with a sale of another asset with a $10,000 loss to avoid paying capital gains taxes.You can also front-load your losses, according to Doyle. If you sell one asset at a $10,000 gain and another at a $15,000 loss, you can use up to $3,000 of the loss to offset other ordinary income — and carry forward the remaining $2,000 to subsequent years.Tax-loss harvesting can be especially advantageous in today's environment, according to Doyle.The market has been experiencing heightened volatility from factors such as mega-cap earnings and the election.This environment creates big winners and losers, giving investors plenty of opportunity to recognize losses. "They made the mistake of repurchasing those same assets within that 61-day period, and they lose the deductibility of loss," Doyle said.If you want to sell a security at a loss but still want exposure to a specific area of the market, you can use the proceeds of the sale to purchase a similar, but not substantially identical, asset. However, the IRS hasn't provided a clear definition of what constitutes a substantially identical asset, so investors should approach this with caution. Or, you could double down on the asset more than 30 days before selling at a loss.Another piece of advice Doyle: try to match your gains and losses.It might be tempting to record a larger loss than gain to carry it over in subsequent years, but it might not be worth taking the loss if you don't plan to use it for tax-harvesting purposes in the near future."Given the time value of money, those long-term capital gain losses lose their value over a period of time," Doyle said. A $2,000 loss today will be worth less carried over many years in the future — in that case, it would be more advantageous to just record the loss in the future. In other words, don't incur excessive losses today just to be able to use them in the future.Lastly, Doyle recommends thinking through this strategy carefully to make sure it's a good fit for your current portfolio."From an investment point of view, it may not make sense. Maybe the securities you have at a loss are going to bounce back later on. Maybe the securities you're selling at a gain have future appreciation left," Doyle said.Investors should keep in mind that tax-loss harvesting isn't a one-size-fits-all strategy — but if you do have gains and the losses to offset them, the end of the tax year might be a good time to think about implementing this plan.
