However, it has definitely altered how marketers sell and consumers buy across the nation.There is a stronger adoption of digital across the value chain, higher efficiency in utilising the resources, and stronger collaboration across partners – be it logistics, distributors, MT chains, etc. Q) As a marketer, what has been your priority in these days of lockdown? Staying connected to the changes in the Indian consumer landscape and their buying patterns is a top priority for us during as well as post the national lockdown. In addition to this, there are a few more things which are critical- The Relevance of Advertising: Post COVID-19, the question that every marketer was having – whether to advertise or not; if yes, what should be the communication.Our stance is to advertise only if we are able to add relevant value to the consumers’ lives. Being in the middle of a global health and economic crisis, empathy with consumers is more important than ever. The brands which have forged meaningful relationships with consumers would seldom hard sell and instead look at offering genuine solutions that add value to their life. We have shifted our focus towards more content-driven communication and acts vis-à-vis the regular advertising during this time. Innovations to meetemerging Consumer Asks:This global health crisis haspushed every business to rethink their offering to the customers. There is a definitive change in the way consumers buy and the way companies sell. We too are focused on creating offerings that address this new shift and new consumer needs. Our communication strategy during this time has been to partner the consumers during these hard times. For Tata Sampann, Indian nutrition backed by science is at the core of the brand. We always aim to provide ‘Sarvagunn Sampann’ i.e. wholesome nutrition to our consumers. The conversations around physical, mental, and emotional well-being during the on-going lockdown are critical to helping consumers remain unscathed. With digital becoming a primary medium to connect with consumers, we launched two digital-first communications for our consumers during the lockdown. The first, ‘Beat the Lockdown’ was aimed at helping consumers stay fit and nourished throughout the lockdown help of a nutritionist, yoga coach, and psychologist. This was a three-week digital forward campaign for us, with expert lives almost everyday around issues people are facing during lockdown related to nutrition, mental and physical health,and giving out simple remedies to it. With the growing concerns over food safety and quality, there is a revival in the traditional Indian food wisdom. Be it haldi doodh, home- cooked meals, etc.There is a higher awareness about food safety and hygiene. We are also witnessing a consumer shift towards products that are not just convenient and easy to store but also healthy and nutritious. Q) Did you tweak your media mix during the lockdown? Have your digital investments gone substantially up during this time? The proportion of investments on digital has significantly gone up during this time. Digital plays a key role in Tata Sampann specifically, as it is an important growth medium for us. Post COVID-19, our focus will continue to be able to connect with our consumers across digital platforms but in newer and more experimental ways. Tata Nutikorner is our nutrition platform that talks about Indian ingredients and their nutritional value through expert voices in the food and health arena. Q) How are you preparing yourself as a brand to function efficiently in the new world? Adapt and Adopt: With the situation changing almost every day, the ability to be agile and adapt will be crucial for a brand. Hygiene and safety above everything: As for the consumer’s safety, nutrition, health, hygiene, and value for money will be a deciding factor when making any purchase. Rethink the Go-to-market strategy:Though E-commerce has become the preferred choice for buying even your essential items, your neighbourhood retail stores will still play an important role. Hence, collaborating with the Government to train the neighbourhoodkirana stores to improve the level of sanitization is going to be equally important. Q)Will the way you market your offerings change in the future? Definitely, the trends and learning during the times of pandemic cannot be ignored and will continue to impact for the next couple of years. We think, given the current market scenario and the fear of this pandemic, the products that focus on nutrition and immunity will be in high demand over regular offerings. Demand for products built on traditional Indian wisdom will increase and as said earlier consumers will take to more of home-cooked meals. In the last two months, e-commerce has grown to the level it would have otherwise taken at least five years, in many markets. India will be no exception. E-commerce and direct to home distribution models will get more prominence over the traditional retail stories due to deep-rooted safety concerns. New-age options, such as selling through AI bots/teleselling, will get more prominence. Human intervention would be encouraged only where it is indispensable. Many of these things were unthinkable in the past, but will become the new normal for many brands. Q) What have your key learnings from this experience been so far? Declutter and focus on what matters:One of the starkest but obvious revelations for us has been how consumers have begun de-cluttering their lives and focusing on only what matters. I think even when it comes to information, consumption of information might be high but I believe they are retaining only those information that matters to them. Safety and Hygiene ruling the roost:In terms of the way they consume products in the post-lockdown era, we expect safety, hygiene &amp; immunity to rule the roost as social distancing has made these factors almost a part of everyone’s daily lives. Acing the digital life: We also are seeing stronger &amp; faster adoption of digital in our lives be it for work or personal needs. Digital will continue to play a critical role for us in the coming days and months. Q) What kind of impact did you see in sales during this time? Any interesting stats to share? Sales have been influenced by how consumer consumption patterns have shifted in the past eight weeks or so. Consumers want to move to the brands that they can trust. We have also seen a significant spike in demand for both Tata Sampann and Tata Salt. Tata Sampann Products like Turmeric and pulses which are high on nutrition and essential in nature have seen a very significant spike during this phase. In wake of the novel coronavirus, it becomes important to stay relevant to our consumers by facilitating and inspiring genuine change. And that it is our endeavour with our social Initiative “Iss Baar #Badon ke liye Jaago Re” which aims to spread awareness and sensitize youth to support the senior citizens during this time. The initiative involves spreading awareness about the need to support the elderly, providing relevant tips, tying up with NGOs and providing a common platform for people to connect with them, and share stories of volunteers to inspire others to act. The most important learning for brands during this crisis is to do something that can genuinely make a positive impact to their consumers/society. In 2022, there will be a quantum leap, creative &amp; digital studios will have to integrate deeper with tech developers and analysts to create experiences for the new digital paradigm like Metaverse, Serl.io, Uhive and likes… The new paradigm of product design would need to consider 3D, multi-dimension, Voice, AR, VR integrated together seamlessly to create a real-like experience in the growing virtual world. The next wave for advertising agencies is to bring all these aspects together in cohesion and we at Hyper Connect are working on similar projects set to launch in 2022. Shashwat Das, Founder, Almond Branding: After a chaotic year, 2021 was the year for brands to understand their consumers all over again as a lot had changed in her life amid this pandemic. A lot of it is still evolving while brands are trying to align themselves and Design is bound to reflect such changes in our society and environment. Motion Design We are going to witness more and more motion in brand design as an engaging approach to storytelling. Just having static graphics as part of your visual assets is not good enough anymore. As consumer touchpoints get more digitised, brand design language will be incorporating more of motion graphics, gifs and animations. Going forward most logos will have an animated version. And motion is not limited to websites or apps, we are seeing the advent of AR fused with design. Coming year, we are going to see more Packaging where you scan a QR code and you have elements from the static design springing to action to narrate the brand story in a more engaging manner. Humanisation of Brand Design The years gone by have redefined our priorities. With several months of social distancing, we all have been missing the personal touch. Brands are going to humanise more in their attempt to build stronger relationships and engage better. At Almond Branding, we are happy to notice that our clients are preferring the proposed conversational style of messaging more, be it Packaging or Communication Design. Going forward consumers will be expecting a more personalised experience while connecting with brands. And Brand Design will make them feel that they are buying from a human and not a company. Environment-Friendly Design The pandemic has made consumers more conscious about their environment. While several brands have taken on the mission of being planet-friendly, it’s now time to walk the talk. Consumers are clever and can now easily spot greenwashing. What it means for us in the business of design, is that we have to do much more than just use the colour green to signify that we are planet-friendly. Going forward, brand designers will have to actually choose substrates and packaging formats that are truly sustainable, recyclable and low on carbon impact. 2022 is going to be year of Design for Sustainability. The last 2 years have taught us that the future is uncertain so be prepared to change drastically. The same old ways of thinking and approach are no longer going to work. The way the past 2 years have been, it can only go bigger and better from here. We all have immense hope from the Big year that is upcoming. Embracing the newer trends will be the best way for brands to dominate the market and outshine their competition. Right from brands dropping NFT’s to allowing customers to buy products in crypto, would start peaking highlight of the more progressive brands. Owning a piece of the brand through the block chain network not only allows you to build a deeper connect with the brand, but also a loyal network of customers who are tech-savy and can contribute back to the brand in multiple ways. Community Building: Harped enough in the past few months, a solid community can help you with product feedback, primary research, uder generated content and also word of mouth evangelism. Communities will go beyond the ‘social media influencers’ to HXC’s (high expectation customers) that the brand targets. These are people who not only can become ideal users / adopters of the product, but also solid leaders / community builders within their personal &amp; professional networks.

Design: The trends to watch out for in 2022

There is a new, shiny marketing trend in Indian FMCG industry. Be it a liquid soap or candies, facelift cream or premium biscuits, marketers are just adding 'gold' before or after the brand name, because of which consumers are attracted to it. 
 
Let alone the FMCG market, even the mobile phones that have 'gold' added to their names or the names of the colour variants, are a hit in the market. 
 
Take, for example, Colgate came out with a new toothbrush, priced it aggressively at Rs 77 per piece, and named it ‘360 Charcoal Gold Toothbrush’. The product was a hit in the market. The tagline, "Wake up to a gold morning... with the gold standard of whole mouth cleaning", hits at Indians’ undying love for gold, which contributed to its popularity. 
 
"The country is besotted with gold. That cuts across the literate and non-literate; it cuts across social, economic, political and religious divides," Harish Bijoor, brand consultant, told <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/cons-products/fmcg/fmcgs-new-marketing-mantra-is-to-brand-products-gold-and-consumers-dont-seem-to-mind/articleshow/53292120.cms">ET</a>. 
 
Bijoor added that companies now shy away from using platinum and silver, having tried it in the past and failing. "Indians don't understand platinum. And silver remains a distant second to gold," he said. 
 
Some other products that have added ‘gold’ to their names are: Marico's Parachute Gold hair oil, Reckitt Benckiser's Dettol Gold liquid soap and bar soap, confectionery category leader Perfetti Van Melle's Alpenliebe gold candies, and Mondelez's premium biscuit Oreo's Golden Oreo variant. 
 
However, adding ‘gold’ to the name doesn’t always mean that pricing has to necessarily be aggressive since the metal is not always used in the products. Sometimes, companies just want to attract users by this name. 
 
However, every trend is ‘in’ for a limited period of time. Therefore, there are chances that companies might be overplaying with the gold thing. 
 "Marketers attach the gold name to brands to convey quality and premiumness but it needs to be done intelligently, linking it to a good, better, best in their portfolio. Otherwise it loses relevance as different marketers use the gold name for entry-level as well premium-quality products," says Devendra Chawla, group president, food FMCG and brands, <keyword id="44949" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Future-group">Future Group</keyword>. 
 
It remains to be seen when the FMCG marketers realise this threat.

Indians are so fond of gold that they don’t mind shelling extra money for FMCG products with ‘gold’ in their names

New Delhi, Jan 22 () The government is working on ways, including setting up standards and identifying goods, to promote sale and marketing of products made by tribal communities in domestic and global markets, an official said.
The commerce and industry ministry has held detailed discussions on the matter with ministries of tribal affairs, minority affairs, Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India (TRIFED) and industry chambers like CII, the official said.
"To begin, about 100 products would be identified for promoting tribal products within and outside the country. Large retail chains would be identified for marketing support," the official said. 
Bureau of Indian Standards and Quality Council of India would be involved to work on international standards and quality of those goods as it is important for entering global markets.
Opportunities will be explored in railways as a customer and sale facilitator.
The move comes after an observation made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a meeting, where he was reviewing the works of tribal affairs ministry earlier this month.
He has mandated the commerce ministry to bring all stakeholders, including different departments, to work on this issue.
The official added that quality, quantity and visibility are important factors which need special focus for promoting sale and marketing of products made by tribal communities which include artefacts, garments and organic produce.
Besides, the ministry is looking at infrastructure required for testing and certification of those goods; tariff codes; and tribal clusters to initiate such activities.
It was advised to all ministries and departments to include these products as gift items for dignitaries and during Diwali festival. 
 These items would also be showcased in international retail exhibitions and business meets.
It was also directed by the ministry to identify design, packaging, marketing components, advertisements, and designers of repute. RR
