ExxonMobil CEO Darren Woods told <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.semafor.com/article/11/12/2024/exxon-ceo-darren-woods-donald-trump-shouldnt-scrap-methane-regulations">Semafor</a> on November 12 that while he wants to maintain US oil production at its current highs, the market is already well supplied. "I don't think today that production in the US is constrained," he said. "I don't know that there's an opportunity to unleash a lot of production in the near term." During the presidential campaign, Trump said that he planned to lower energy prices — including the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/09/10/us/politics/trump-economics-gas-tariffs-inflation.html">cost of gas</a> — by increasing US oil production. "We will frack, frack, frack and drill, baby, drill," Trump <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.factcheck.org/2024/10/the-issues-trumps-proposal-to-lower-prices-by-increasing-energy-production/">said</a> in October. "I will cut your energy prices in half within 12 months." In September, Trump <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/09/10/us/politics/trump-economics-gas-tariffs-inflation.html">said</a> he would reduce gas prices to below $2 a gallon. Energy analysts told Business Insider that big oil companies are more focused on returning money to shareholders than investing in projects that boost production, especially because China isn't importing as much oil due to its economic downturn. Their comments underscore how little control a US president has over the oil and gas market, including prices at the pump. "It's a global market," Ben Cahill, director of energy markets and policy at the University of Texas at Austin, told BI. "There's very little any president can do to change the direction of oil or gasoline prices." Cahill added that he expects the US to increase oil production, but it will happen gradually. The US is already producing record amounts of oil, at <a target="_blank" href="https://www.eia.gov/todayinenergy/detail.php?id=61545">12.9 million barrels of crude a day in 2023</a> compared with about 11 million barrels per day in 2020, when Trump was in office. Last year, the US also became the world's biggest exporter of natural gas. In October, the US Energy Information Administration <a target="_blank" href="https://www.enerdata.net/publications/daily-energy-news/us-eia-expects-domestic-crude-oil-production-reach-135-mbd-2025.html#:~:text=At%20a%20global%20scale%2C%20the,13.5%20mb%2Fd%20in%202025.">projected</a> that the US would produce 13.5million barrels a day in 2025, hitting another record. And there is room for the industry to expand. Woods <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2024/11/01/exxon-ceo-says-us-election-wont-affect-oil-production.html">told</a> CNBC earlier this month that there are areas in the Gulf of Mexico — where federal leasing hasn't allowed companies to drill — that could be a source of additional oil production in the long term. Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, told BI that Trump could take some steps to try to boost US oil production, including easing regulations to open up additional places for companies to drill and working with OPEC. However, he said boosting oil production while keeping prices at a desired level is a "delicate balance" for the industry. "If oil prices drop, you're likely to see a natural decline in US oil production over the long run," he said, adding, "Oil companies have shareholders to be accountable to." In recent years, the US has increased oil production even as President Joe Biden imposed stricter limits on greenhouse gas emissions from power plants, oil and gas infrastructure, and gas-powered vehicles to help slow the climate crisis. In a separate interview with <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.wsj.com/business/energy-oil/exxon-says-trump-should-keep-u-s-in-paris-climate-pact-3d8de471">The Wall Street Journal</a>, Woods added that the US shouldn't drop out of the Paris Agreement as Trump did in his first term and has promised to do again. For $44.95, I could be the proud owner of the <a target="_blank" class="c-link c-link--underline" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/skibidi-toilet-is-good-actually-2023-10">Skibidi Toilet</a> — complete with <keyword id="23944930" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="toilet-themed-toys" source="keywords">toilet-themed toys</keyword> in the bowl. And in case you were wondering: Yes, it makes a flushing noise. If you've spent any time lately around someone who isn't old enough to drive, you've probably heard some utterance of the word "skibidi." I'll spare you the full summary of the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/skibidi-toilet-gen-z-alpha-memes-internet-culture-outdated-old-2023-7" target="_blank">Gen Alpha meme</a>, but the short form is: It's a YouTube series about a dystopian battle of good and evil (the toilet guys are the villains). My colleague Lindsay Dodgson <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/skibidi-toilet-is-good-actually-2023-10" target="_blank">describes</a> it as "part 'Terminator,' part 'Bladerunner,' and obviously, part toilets." She says the series is actually good. What's interesting to me is that this absurd toilet meme appears to be doing a robust business in the toy aisle of your local discount store. I spoke with Dan Meyer, head of brands at Bonkers Toys, the company behind the flush. "Right away we noticed that it was exploding," Meyer said of the skibidi phenomenon online. Bonkers made a licensing deal and started pitching vendors on the toilet toy — an easy sell, he said. Bonkers started making prototypes of the toilet toy in early 2024 — and it's hit the shelves in time for the holiday season, a tight timeline. "When we're pitching it to [retailers], we had enough data to see that in middle schools and elementary schools, the term skibidi was already a thing," Meyer said. Bonkers could point to the YouTube views the Skibidi Toilet series had racked up — its channel has more than 40 million followers — or how if they searched Instagram, they'd find "hundreds and hundreds" of people dressed in homemade Skibidi Toilet costumes. Bonkers Toys, founded in 2017 in San Diego, has carved a niche for itself by licensing intellectual property from YouTube creators. Its first big toy was the giant "mystery egg" toy for Ryan's World. At the time, Ryan's World was one of the top channels on YouTube, a pioneer in the genre of "little kid opening toys." <div type="image" title="skibidi toilet toys" height="3000" width="3000" msid="115096128" hostid="261"></div>Bonkers' move into memes is in line with what retailers are trying to achieve, Blake Droesch, a senior retail analyst with BI sister company Emarketer, told me. He said big box stores like Walmart are trying to respond quickly to online trends, especially for toys. They need to move fast to compete with viral shopping on the likes of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-gen-x-boomers-love-temu-2024-1">Temu</a>. "This environment has certainly created demand for manufacturers who can produce fast and cheap products that will serve this growing market," he said. "It's no different than fast fashion, but for toys. They respond quickly to viral moments and get products on the shelves while the trend is still hot." The original Skibidi Toilet was the creation of animator Alexey Gerasimov, who made it for his YouTube channel DaFuq!?Boom!, which has 44.3 million subscribers. Gerasimov has partnered with Invisible Narratives, a companyfounded by Adam Goodman, the former president of DreamWorks SKG and Paramount Pictures who works with YouTube creators to help them make the jump to more traditional media, like movies and TV. It also helps them with licensing their brands for merchandise, like Skibidi's deal with Bonkers. Merchandising, like with the toys from Bonkers Toys, is crucial to success for these new media brands, he said. "We believe that young people don't want to pay for content anymore," Goodman told Business Insider. "Their parents pay for subscriptions, and the don't really go to movies the way that they used to — but they like buying stuff." Skibidi Toilet is certainly not the first YouTube creation to enter into consumer merchandise. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-mrbeast-pitches-brands-sponsorship-deals-jimmy-donaldson-youtube-2024-10">MrBeast</a> sells chocolates and premade lunches along with Logan Paul and KSI, who make the popular drink Prime. <div type="image" title="Skibidit toilet plush toy" height="3000" width="3000" msid="115096131" hostid="261"></div>Meyer wouldn't provide numbers on how many toilets they've sold, but so far, things are looking promising, he said. He said Bonkers' launch of a LankyBox-themed product about three years ago — which was another product centered on a YouTube creator — was one of the "biggest, most successful-selling brands in the boys' action aisle" at discounters, including Walmart. He said the Skibidi Toilet was outselling LankyBox by around double. (Walmart didn't respond to requests for comment on sales numbers.) Right now, there are only a few Skibidi Toilet-theme products from Bonkers: individual action figures, mini-figures, plushes (aw, cute), and the aforementioned "mystery" toilet, which includes stickers, minifigures, and lanyards. But there will be more products for next year, Meyer said — including what every little boy and girl dreams of getting from Santa: a remote-controlled toilet bowl. We all know the pressure of meeting deadlines, but what if we told you that being late doesn’t just affect your calendar — it could actually tarnish how people see the quality of your <keyword id="6355058" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Work" source="Orion">work</keyword>? According to researchers, that’s exactly the case. They found that work submitted late is seen as lower in quality than the same work submitted on time or early, no matter how great it actually is. It turns out, missing a deadline can make you and your work seem less competent and trustworthy, all because of the subtle judgments deadlines trigger in other people. <h2>The deadly deadline dilemma</h2>Previous studies have focused on how deadlines affect employees’ productivity and stress levels, but lead researcher Sam Maglio’s team wanted to know how missing a deadline changes an outsider’s perception. To test this, the researchers conducted 18 different experiments with thousands of people, from managers and HR professionals to everyday folks, evaluating a wide range of creative and professional work. In the test, participants saw the same exact work samples — like photography, product pitches, news articles, and art — but they were told it was submitted either early, on time, or late. And guess what? The late submissions were consistently rated as lower quality, despite being identical to those submitted on time. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="114883482" title="We heard from over 750 people who have recently struggled to find work. Here are their biggest frustrations with getting hired." mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div>Maglio explains, “Everyone saw the exact same art contest entry, school submission, or business proposal, but they couldn’t help but use their knowledge of when it came in to guide their evaluation of how good it was.” In other words, once people knew something was late, it was hard not to think less of it. <h2>Early birds don’t really get extra credit, but late birds do lose points</h2>Interestingly, turning in work early didn’t seem to earn extra praise. Evaluators ranked work that came in early and on time as equally good, which means there’s no major boost for those overachievers who submit work ahead of the deadline. But the real problem comes if you’re late — even by a little. In fact, it didn’t matter if the work was one day or one week late; the hit to quality ratings was the same. Late submissions were rated as poorly as work that objectively missed the mark, like not meeting word counts. And it turns out that advance warning doesn’t do much to soften the blow — one missed deadline still chipped away at the evaluator’s view of the employee’s competence and integrity, even if they were usually punctual. But here’s where it gets even trickier: evaluators didn’t just judge the work as poorer in quality — they also saw the latecomer as less reliable and were less likely to consider them for future tasks. One missed deadline could, in theory, limit your future opportunities to shine or earn promotions. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="114915871" title="I did a remote internship while also side hustling at a national park. I worked all day but lived in a beautiful place." mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div>The researchers even tested this with high school students in China, who were shown art entries with the submission dates marked as either early, on time, or late. Even though they were told to ignore everything except the artwork itself, the “late” pieces received lower grades. And that’s with peers evaluating peers, so it didn’t matter if a boss or manager had set the deadline — missing it still left a mark. <h2>Let your manager know!</h2>Luckily, not all hope is lost for late submitters. Maglio’s team found that the reason behind a missed deadline actually mattered. If the delay was due to uncontrollable events — like jury duty or a medical emergency — people cut the submitter more slack. The same was true if the deadline was a “soft” one rather than a hard cutoff, or if the work wasn’t particularly critical. “Communication around deadlines is vital. If it’s a hard, and not a soft, deadline, you as the manager should let your employees know,” Maglio explained. “If the reason why you missed the deadline was beyond your control, you as the employee should let your manager know.” The findings of this study have been published in Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes and can be accessed <a href="https://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.obhdp.2024.104365">here</a>.

The online survey, conducted by The Harris Poll on behalf of the APA, involved about 3,300 adults in the US."The emotional drain of what we're all experiencing is going to lower productivity," Gabriella Kellerman, chief innovation officer at the virtual coaching platform BetterUp, told BI. How much we get done on the job can drop because of our own anxiety, and when working with others becomes fraught."As we get closer to the election, people are more likely to avoid coworkers based on feared political tension," Kellerman said.That friction, or fear of it, can <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/job-politics-talking-discussions-work-rules-election-hr-trump-harris-2024-8">hurt team output</a>.Dorie Clark, a communication coach who teaches at Columbia Business School and is the author of "The Long Game," told BI that some workers have been preoccupied for months about the election. That's likely to increase on Election Day, and perhaps in its aftermath, she said.She said some workers will be busy hitting refresh on news and social sites, looking for insight into how the election might swing."What they're wanting is the one thing they can't have, which is control," Clark said.She said that for some workers, not knowing what their future — and that of the country —might look like because of the vote can produce major stress."This is not dissimilar to a patient who has acute symptoms but no diagnosis," Clark said.<h2 id="9ea62c69-07ec-4729-82df-cad4d8874b26">Bad behavior can be contagious</h2>Christine Porath, a professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Kenan-Flagler Business School and author of "Mastering Community," told BI that the toxicity of a divisive election could seep into our workdays as people are exposed to rudeness and bad behavior — even if they're only learning about it secondhand."It's very distracting and hijacks our attention and focus. It leads us to perform worse, be far less creative, less helpful to others, and unfortunately, it is contagious," she said.Porath said that when incivility infiltrates the workplace, it primes employees to act or think dysfunctionally. Those employees, in turn, can spread that negativity to their coworkers.The Society for Human Resource Management reports that politics is a "top driver" of incivility on the job. Discourtesy, the organization said, costs US organizations a collective $2.17 billion every day due to absenteeism and reduced productivity.Yet it's not all bad news. In research Porath conducted several years ago involving six organizations in different industries, she found that workers who felt that they were thriving in their jobs were better able to repel the type of negativity — like that emanating from a contentious election — that could lead them to become distracted.<h2 id="8d93d8a3-d2e2-42f2-8755-79681440a7c4">What managers can do</h2>Clark, the communication coach, said managers shouldn't make assumptions about their teams' political leanings but should instead be sensitive to employees' emotions.Yet that doesn't mean being overly indulgent or letting workers focus too long on issues that aren't germane to the business."You might feel sad about who wins or loses a presidential election, but this is very different than, say, the death of a relative," Clark said.Despite the widespread election worries, not every indicator signals that the vexing political climate is throwing off most workers. In an online survey of about 900 US workers conducted from late August to mid-September, the research firm Gartner found that while 48% of employees said they were anxious about who would win the election, two-thirds of respondents said those concerns hadn't dented their productivity at work.Gareffa, the therapist in Michigan, doesn't want to risk being overly distracted when they're with clients. Gareffa plans to use the week off from work to spend time with family and perhaps focus on a hobby like drawing or sculpting. They said their clients have been understanding about the planned time away."It's been a good kind of example of how to take care of yourself without just running away from responsibilities or just pumping the brakes on life," Gareffa said.

India remains highly dependent on imports for minerals critical to accelerating its <keyword id="19951336" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="energy-transition" source="keywords">energy transition</keyword>, with a full reliance on shipping in lithium, cobalt and nickel, according to a report released Monday. The report, published by the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA), said that India's demand for <keyword id="19978839" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="critical-minerals" source="keywords">critical minerals</keyword> is expected to more than double by 2030, while domestic mining operations may take over a decade to start producing. It stresses that India needs a carefully crafted import strategy to mitigate potential trade risks while balancing international relationships to secure these essential minerals. IEEFA's report examines five critical minerals (and their compounds) - cobalt, copper, graphite, lithium and nickel - from the perspectives of import dependency, trade dynamics, domestic availability, and global price fluctuations. The findings show that India remains largely import-dependent for these minerals and their compounds, with 100 per cent import reliance for minerals like lithium, cobalt, and nickel. "India should strive to de-risk its critical minerals sourcing by identifying new international resources and expediting <keyword id="20681115" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="domestic-production" source="keywords">domestic production</keyword>. A concerted effort to partner with and foster bilateral relations with <keyword id="23713985" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mineral-rich-nations" source="keywords">mineral-rich nations</keyword> should be a priority for India," said the report's co-author Charith Konda, Energy Specialist, IEEFA. "The country can also explore investment opportunities in resource-rich, friendly nations, such as Australia and Chile, as well as African countries like Ghana and South Africa," he added. The report said India depends heavily on China for synthetic graphite and natural graphite and it should explore cooperation initiatives with countries like Mozambique, Madagascar, Brazil and Tanzania which are some of the highest graphite producing countries. "As part of the Global South cooperation initiatives, these countries could be favourable partners for India for <keyword id="23713984" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="graphite-trading" source="keywords">graphite trading</keyword>," said the report's co-author Kaira Rakheja, Energy Analyst, IEEFA. India is also highly import-dependent for copper cathodes and nickel sulphates from just two countries - Japan and Belgium. The report suggests India could look at the US, the fifth largest producer of copper in the world, to diversify its suppliers and enhance <keyword id="23714709" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="supply-security" source="keywords">supply security</keyword>. For minerals like lithium oxide and nickel oxide, the dependency is low on one country, but overall imports largely come from Russia and China, both countries with potential trade risks. "Developing domestic lithium refining capacity will help India integrate with the global lithium supply chain," said Rakheja. The report also notes the significant efforts that the Indian government is making to improve domestic production of critical minerals with the auctions by the Ministry of Mines and the planned Critical Minerals Mission. "The critical minerals mining block auctions can serve as an opportunity for India to focus on building refining and processing capabilities to emerge as a global value-adding hub," said Rakheja. "Government support in the form of viability gap funding and technology development will help promote such auctions and ultimately the domestic production of critical minerals. "A stable supply of critical minerals is imperative for India to achieve its <keyword id="19895602" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="renewable-energy" source="keywords">renewable energy</keyword> goals," Konda said. India has committed to achieving 500 gigawatts (GW) of non-fossil fuel-based electricity installed capacity by 2030. Currently, the country's renewable energy installed capacity stands at 201 GW, with solar energy accounting for 91 GW. According to another study, the fast-developing South Asian nation needs to install around 7,000 GW of renewable energy capacity to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070.
