<ul><li>US-based Grubman Shire Meiselas &amp; Sacks, which manages celebrities like <keyword id="1655" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Priyanka-Chopra">Priyanka Chopra</keyword>, Drake, <keyword id="15313" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Madonna">Madonna</keyword> and many others, has been the victim of a <keyword id="9211816" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="revil-ransomware">REvil ransomware</keyword> attack. </li><li>The law firm has confirmed the breach and cybersecurity firm Emisoft claims the hackers posted evidence of data theft on the dark web.</li><li>Cybersecurity experts told Business Insider that ransomware attacks are now a ‘double-barrelled weapon’ and having mitigation policies in place is the only way to prevent them.</li></ul>After reports of a <keyword id="6465154" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ransomware-attack">ransomware attack</keyword> on leading IT company Cognizant, hackers have now breached the US-based Grubman Shire Meiselas &amp; Sacks law firm. It manages cases for several prominent celebrities — including Priyanka Chopra, <keyword id="6358169" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Lady-GaGa">Lady Gaga</keyword>, Drake, Madonna, Jessica Simpson, Bruce Springsteen and several others. “REVil, also known as Sodin or Sodinokibi, isn’t just operating on the old-school ransomware model of ‘scramble your files and offer to sell you back the decryption key’. The latest trend in ransomware attacks is to use a double-barrelled weapon that gives victims two reasons to pay up,” said Paul Ducklin, the Principal Research Scientist at Sophos. In March, operators of REvil ransomware <a href="https://nakedsecurity.sophos.com/2020/03/23/stolen-data-of-company-that-refused-revil-ransom-payment-now-on-sale/">published over 12 GB of data</a> that allegedly belongs to one of its victims – Brooks International – after they refused to pay the ransom. “You need to hand it over to the experts for a forensic investigation. They will be able to determine what is jeopardized, what is not erased. They will take over potentially communicating with the attackers after they understand the depth of the attack,” Cyberproof President Yuval Wollman, the former Director General of the Israeli Intelligence Ministry— who has been working with customers who were affected, can potentially be targets of ransomware — told Business Insider. Emisoft told <a href="https://variety.com/2020/digital/news/entertainment-law-firm-hacked-data-breach-lady-gaga-madonna-bruce-springsteen-1234602737/">Variety</a> that the evidence of the 756-gigabyte (GB) data theft was posted via a forum on the dark web. The treasure trove of information including contracts, nondisclosure agreements, phone numbers, email addresses and personal correspondence. “Today we see attackers taking advantage of the new normality,” said Wollman. Digital blackmail — to pay or not to pay? The basis of the ransomware attack is not unlike conventional blackmail, except that its online. The hackers steal information that can then be used to extort the victims for compensation, normally monetary in the form of bitcoins. The cybercriminals behind the REvil ransomware attack are threatening to release the data stolen from Grubman Shire Meiselas &amp; Sacks in nine instalments. “The crooks quietly upload huge troves of so-called ‘trophy data’ that they use to blackmail anyone who is hesitant to pay up,” said Ducklin. “In other words, the financial extortion is no longer just a “kidnap ransom” to get your files back, but also a blackmail demand to stop the crooks leaking your data – or, worse still, your customers’ data – to the world,” he explained. Prevention is better than the cure Right now, <a href="http://www.gsmlaw.com/">Grubman Shire Meiselas &amp; Sacks</a> website is nothing more than their logo. Even though the law firm has confirmed the hack, they are yet to disclose how much of their data has been lost for good. While backing up data is a good mitigation strategy, it’s not full-proof, according to Wollman. “Ransomware attacks that steal masses of data first, and where the crooks carefully learn their way around your network, very often leave telltale signs that someone is hanging around where they shouldn’t,” said Ducklin. “Crooks who pull off all-your-network-at-once attacks can afford to spend time probing for any existing holes they know about. Make it harder for them by patching known bugs as soon as you can,” he explained. In the case of Cognizant, the ransomware attack was initiated by Maze — another cybercrime gang — using a phishing email, according to Wollman. The source of the ransomware attack on Grubman Shire Meiselas &amp; Sacks is still unknown. The issue with such attacks is that it’s not only the firm or the company that’s put at risk but also its customers. The information that’s stolen can lead to identity theft, impersonation and a number of other fraudulent activities. They serve as important reminders for companies to stay on their toes and not take cybersecurity lightly. The <keyword id="9211816" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="revil-ransomware">REvil ransomware</keyword> group hit the US wine and spirits giant Brown-Forman, maker of Jack Daniel's. Although Brown-Forman claims have prevented attackers from encrypting their files, hackers said they have access to "1TB corporate data which they have threatened to leak on the Dark Web", reports threatpost.com. According to Jonathan Knudsen, Senior Security Consultant at Synopsys Software Integrity Group, as Brown-Forman reported that they've successfully prevented attackers from encrypting files, while few details have been released yet, "it would appear that they have been working to implement a proactive security strategy". "Times like these illustrate how valuable that proactivity can truly be," Knudsen said in a statement on Wednesday. The results that pop up happen to be sites full of <keyword id="54201" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Malware">malware</keyword> that can steal your passwords and personal information. 
 The findings have been revealed by the global cyber security firm <keyword id="127849" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="McAfee">McAfee</keyword> who says cybercriminals often use popular celeb names as easy baits to lure unsuspecting fans. The company has researched the most famous names of the global pop culture and disclosed the riskiest celebrity sportsmen, actors and politicians across the Web in its 2013 rendition of ‘Most Dangerous Celebrity’ research. 
 Don’t get us wrong – there’s nothing risky about these people. But their popularity makes them the <keyword id="11094" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Hackers">hackers</keyword>’ choice and their followers often land up on ‘dangerous’ websites that tag those names. The McAfee study highlights the trend of this year and searching for a celebrity name, coupled with the search terms above, has resulted in the highest instances of malware-laden sites. The study uses McAfee® SiteAdvisor® site ratings, which indicate the sites which are risky to search when attached to celebrity names on the Web and calculate an overall risk percentage. 
 So who are the <keyword id="38964" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bollywood-celebs">Bollywood celebs</keyword> to figure in that list? You may feel shocked and surprised, but the person topping the list is none other than our cute and bubbly Piggy Chops (<keyword id="1655" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Priyanka-Chopra">Priyanka Chopra</keyword>, to the world). The actor-turned-‘Exotic’ singer has been named McAfee’s Most Dangerous Celebrity in Indian cyberspace this year. The firm has used co.in sites for search purpose and come up with 79 ‘infected’ sites to her ‘credit’. But there’s more meat to the story – Priyanka has knocked down Indo-Canadian porn star Sunny Leone who led the pack last year. In fact, Sunny occupies a dismal 9th slot this year. 
 Among the male stars, the magnetic Shah Rukh Khan with his dimpled smile is the obvious choice for net searchers, although he is lagging behind Piggy Chops with 75 ‘<keyword id="793302" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="malicious-sites">malicious sites</keyword>’ to his credit. Next comes <keyword id="6354583" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Salman-Khan">Salman Khan</keyword>, but the quintessential macho man of <keyword id="4636" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Indian-Cinema">Indian cinema</keyword> could not flex his muscles much in this cyber contest and has finished a poor third with 68 malware-laden sites. 
 In contrast, Bollywood’s only ‘size zero’ diva <keyword id="2165" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kareena-Kapoor">Kareena Kapoor</keyword> has done better and finished a close 4th with a score of 63. It shows that ‘Bebo’ hasn’t lost her sizzle in spite of her marriage with the ageing hero <keyword id="333" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Saif-Ali-Khan">Saif Ali Khan</keyword> who finished 6th with a score of 55. But one must not forget <keyword id="2823" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Akshay-Kumar">Akshay Kumar</keyword>, the classic khiladi and the macho playboy-turned-romantic in many of his films, who has bagged the 5th spot with 62 search results. 
 Still, we can’t help feeling a bit shocked when ‘Big B’ <keyword id="6357912" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="amitabh-bachchan">Amitabh Bachchan</keyword> finished behind Saif with a score of 53. His charisma and refined sense of humour have undoubtedly won him millions of fans over the decades. Commenting on the study, Venkatasubrahmanyam Krishnapur, vice-president of engineering – Consumer and Mobile, Business Group, McAfee India Centre, said, “In India, where celebrities are given the status of demigods, cybercriminals often use their names to lure people to sites that actually host malicious software designed to compromise personal details and disrupt devices. 
 “By including the names of popular celebrities in a website’s search tags, <keyword id="96298" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="cyber-criminals">cyber criminals</keyword> are able to direct more visitors to malicious sites where they may unwittingly sign up for <keyword id="35616" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="spam">spam</keyword> or harmful <keyword id="48511" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Spyware">spyware</keyword>, ending up with a malware ridden devices,” he added. 
 
Alarmed? Just be careful when you look up your favourite celeb next time and don’t visit sites randomly, especially if you are getting loads of security warning.

A fact they only revealed in July even though the attack was originally detected in May by the company. The hack has reportedly affected universities, non-profit organisations, and foundations. Blackbaud claims that once it spotted the cybercriminals, the company’s IT experts were able to expel the hackers from the system. Blackbaud pays the <keyword id="6362094" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ransomware">ransomware</keyword> Before the hackers got locked out, the attackers were able to remove “a copy of a subset of data”. The group behind the attack then asked for compensation with the threat of releasing the data to the public. “Because protecting our customers’ data is our top priority, we paid the cybercriminal’s demand with confirmation that the copy they removed had been destroyed,” said Blackbaud in a <a href="https://www.blackbaud.com/securityincident">statement</a>. The payment was made to ensure that the data will not be circulated, misused, or otherwise be made publicly available, according to the company. The company asserts that no credit card, bank account, or social security information was stolen by the hackers. The two-month wait The bigger issue to be addressed is that the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) has asserted that companies must report data breaches to authorities within 72 hours of discovery — or face the consequences in the forms of fines. The <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-53516413">BBC</a> reports that the UK's Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), as well as the Canadian data authorities, were only informed about the breach last weekend, which is much later than when Blackbaud originally uncovered the threat. She described it as a time when "social media wasn't the currency it is today," so sponsored weddings were primarily a function of <keyword id="6355064" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="celebrity" source="Orion">celebrity</keyword> weddings.She said that since then, she's seen a massive boom in the popularity of sponsored weddings, with a considerable uptick in the past five years thanks to the rise of social media influencer culture."Couples assume they deserve free products and services because of their reach," she said. That goes for wedding line items like photography, decor, beverages, and, of course, clothes. Ely cited examples including Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Nick Jonas, who she said "made headlines for sponsoring portions of their own wedding."It made the news. "Some of the biggest weddings that have happened in the past couple of years, I, as a wedding planner, know were sponsored because of what it looks like," Laesser-Keck said.While she declined to name names, she did provide some insight into how she determines whether a wedding is sponsored or not. "I can take one look at chairs at a ceremony and know if they got them for free or not," she said. Julie Sabatino, the founder of wedding styling company <a href="https://thestylishbride.com/">The Stylish Bride,</a> told Insider via email that Kourtney and Travis' wedding is the perfect example of how brands and celebrities can seamlessly promote one another. Whether you love it or hate it, Sabatino explained, people discuss it. "The purpose for the brand is to increase awareness with a particular group of people, or to show a different perspective than what they traditionally have done," Sabatino said. "A high-profile partnership can do both and really get everyone talking."Laesser-Keck labeled Kardashian and Barker's Dolce &amp; Gabbana partnership a success because the couple's <keyword id="11895715" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="style" source="Orion">style</keyword> aligned with that of the brand.
