Amazon is considering building physical pharmacies

Privia HealthPrivia Health CEO Shawn Morris<ul class="summary-list"><li>We're starting to get a better understanding of the financials of primary-care companies looking to go national.</li><li>In January, clinic-operator One Medical made its <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/one-medical-goes-public-stock-price-in-digital-health-ipo-2020-1">public market debut, surging in its first day of trading.</a></li><li>Business Insider just got a look at some of the financials for Privia Health, a primary-care company that manages 660 practice locations across the US. </li><li>According to Privia, the company is expecting to make $1.3 billion in gross revenue this year. The company said it was "meaningfully" profitable in 2019. </li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories</a>.</li></ul>Investors are betting millions that <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/disruptive-primary-care-companies-iora-health-one-medical-chenmed-2019-8">primary-care companies</a> can become businesses with a national reach. Some, like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/one-medical-goes-public-stock-price-in-digital-health-ipo-2020-1">One Medical</a>, charge an annual fee to patients or employers and rely on building new offices and employing doctors directly. Others, like VillageMD, bring in existing primary care practices with existing patients, employing some doctors and partnering with others.Adding evidence that investors are embracing the new models, One Medical went public in January, and it currently trades at a <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/onem-stock">$2.8 billion valuation</a>. Then, there are companies like Privia Health. Privia's model differs from One Medical in a few key ways. For one, Privia works with existing practices, rather than building out its own new ones. The medical groups that staff the practices aren't owned by Privia.Instead, Privia partners with them and provides one central way to get contracts with health plans. Privia is paid a management fee for the service that comes out of the revenue the practices bring in. Privia now works with 2,600 healthcare providers across 660 locations. In all, they care for about 2.6 million patients.Based on that footprint, the company expects to make $200 million in net revenue this year, off $1.3 billion in gross revenue, in 2020. It says it was "meaningfully" profitable in 2019 as measured by Ebitda, a gauge of profits that excludes some expenses.Arlington, Virginia-based <a href="https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20140916005224/en/Goldman-Sachs-Led-Investor-Group-Backs-Privia-Health">Privia raised $400 million</a> in 2014 in a Goldman Sachs-led round of funding that also involved other investment firems. According to One Medical's filing, the firm had 397,000 members and operated in 77 locations as of September 30, 2019. The company's net losses deepened as membership climbed, the filing shows. From 2017 to 2018, losses widened from $31.7 million to $44.4 million. For the first nine months of 2019, One Medical's net loss was $34.2 million, and it took in $199 million in revenue over the same period. For the most part, primary care organizations tend to be privately held organizations, or a part of a larger public healthcare company, making it tricky to get a clear picture of where One Medical's financials sit among other primary care businesses. For instance, Aledade, a a six-year-old startup that works with independent primary care practices so that they can get paid based on how well they care for patients rather than based on how many visits they have, told Business Insider the company plans to grow its revenue by 97% between 2019 and 2020 to an expected $150 million. It said it expects to be profitable this year. It's also meant that some models have focused in on certain populations, such as caring for seniors 65 and over who are enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans or patients that are enrolled in Medicaid as well as Medicare.<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/disruptive-primary-care-companies-iora-health-one-medical-chenmed-2019-8"></a>Health systems are also taking note. For instance, Utah-based Intermountain Healthcare and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/geisinger-health-plan-keep-aging-pennsylvania-population-healthy-2019-9">Pennsylvania-based Geisinger</a> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/health-systems-new-way-of-doing-primary-care-2019-5">are taking similar approaches with some of their primary-care doctors</a>. We got an exclusive look at the financials of Privia, an under-the-radar upstart taking on the primary care industry

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="14456909" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="wasps" source="Orion">Wasps</keyword>, which include yellow jackets and hornets, can be aggressive and <keyword id="14456911" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="sting" source="Orion">sting</keyword> multiple times.</li><li>To treat a <keyword id="14456910" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="wasp" source="Orion">wasp</keyword> sting, wash it with soap and water, then reduce swelling with ice and antihistamines. </li></ul>Stinging insects, like bees and wasps, can be a nuisance during the warmer months, when they are most active. While a sting from any insect can be painful, wasps are especially notorious.That's because wasps are aggressive and can sting you many more times than, say, a <keyword id="11964520" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="bee" source="Orion">bee</keyword> would. Moreover, wasp stings are painful and irritating, and may even be dangerous if you have an allergic reaction. Here's what you should know about wasp stings, how to treat them effectively, and what you can do to prevent them. <h2>What does a wasp sting look like?</h2><div type="image" title="A person’s arm has a swollen, red wasp sting." height="3359" width="4479" msid="92884097" hostid="261" sizebytes="198872"></div>It can be hard to tell a wasp from a <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/treatments/bee-sting-treatment" target="_blank" rel="noopener">bee sting</a>, except for one notable marker. If you're stung by a honey bee, it will leave its stinger in your skin, appearing as a little black dot in the sting. Wasps, on the other hand, will keep their stinger, according to <a href="https://ent.uga.edu/people/faculty/keith-delaplane.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Keith Delaplane</a>, who has a doctorate in entomology and serves as the director of the <a href="https://bees.caes.uga.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Honey Bee Program at the University of Georgia</a>.<h2>Symptoms</h2>If a wasp stings you, you'll likely experience the following symptoms near the site: <ul><li>Redness and warmth </li><li>Pain and swelling </li><li>Hives</li><li>Itchiness</li></ul>The above symptoms are common and not a sign of an allergic reaction, Delaplane says. <h2>Allergic reaction and complications</h2><a href="https://www.virginiaallergyrelief.com/doctors/courtney-jackson-blair-md-faaaai/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dr. Courtney Jackson Blair,</a> an allergist and immunologist at <a href="https://www.virginiaallergyrelief.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Privia</a>, says people experiencing an allergic reaction to a wasp sting will have symptoms that interfere with their ABCs: airway, breathing, and circulation. These symptoms could include: <ul><li><a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/conditions-symptoms/hives-vs-rash" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hives</a> or swelling that is well beyond the sting area</li><li>Trouble breathing </li><li>Tickling or tightness in the throat or chest </li><li>Lightheadedness or dizziness </li><li>Vomiting </li><li>Fainting </li></ul>Insect sting allergies are rare. And while some may only experience a mild allergic reaction, more severe reactions can be fatal. In 2017, for example, allergic reactions to insect stings killed 89 Americans, according to the <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/68/wr/mm6829a5.htm#:~:text=During%202000%E2%80%932017%2C%20a%20total,Source%3A%20National%20Vital%20Statistics%20System." target="_blank" rel="noopener">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention</a>. Important: In order to develop an insect sting allergy, you need to be stung, Blair says — so you may not know you have an allergy until you experience symptoms. Additionally, getting stung in the mouth or throat can also cause life-threatening symptoms, such as trouble breathing. If you think you are having a severe reaction to an insect sting, Blair says you should call 911 or your local emergency medical services right away. <h2>Multiple stings</h2>Wasps' aggressive nature and ability to sting more than once increases the risk that you might get more than one sting. Even if you are not allergic to insect stings, sustaining multiple stings could cause a severe reaction or other <keyword id="11894571" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="health" source="Orion">health</keyword> complications. One rare complication of multiple stings is <a href="http://ipm.ucanr.edu/PMG/PESTNOTES/pn7450.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">kidney insufficiency or failure</a> due to an influx of damaged tissue from the venom. This can happen <a href="http://ipm.ucanr.edu/PMG/PESTNOTES/pn7449.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">days after the initial stings.</a>According to a small <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4792632/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2015 study</a>, 20 to 200 stings are enough to result in kidney failure or death.If you get multiple stings and are showing symptoms of a <a href="https://drs.illinois.edu/Page/SafetyLibrary/BeeandWasp" target="_blank" rel="noopener">severe reaction</a>, get medical attention promptly. If you aren't having a severe reaction, you can treat the stings at home, but you should talk to a doctor about what to do if other complications arise.<h2>How to treat a wasp sting</h2>1. <a href="https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/conditions-and-diseases/insect-stings" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Wash the affected site</a> thoroughly with soap and water.2. Apply ice to the sting area to decrease swelling and pain (leave it on for 10 minutes, then remove it for 10 minutes, over the course of 30 minutes to an hour).3. Raise the body part where the sting is located to help reduce swelling.4. To further treat swelling and itching, consider taking an over-the-counter <a href="https://www.insider.com/what-are-antihistamines" target="_blank" rel="noopener">antihistamine</a>, like <a href="https://affiliate.insider.com?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.target.com%2Fp%2Fclaritin-allergy-relief-24-hour-non-drowsy-loratadine-tablets-5ct%2F-%2FA-53088402" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Claritin</a>. You can also take <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/treatments/aspirin-vs-tylenol" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tylenol</a> (acetaminophen) for pain relief. 5. If your symptoms worsen or begin affecting your ABCs, call 911.<h2>Home remedies for wasp stings</h2>There are also several home remedies you can use to treat wasp stings: <ul><li>Meat tenderizer powder. Mix non-seasoned <a href="https://www.scripps.org/news_items/5806-summer-bee-stings-101#:~:text=Apply%20a%20meat%20tenderizer%2Dwater,cotton%20ball%20for%2020%20minutes.&amp;text=The%20papain%20enzyme%20in%20the,soda%20solution%20for%2020%20minutes." target="_blank" rel="noopener">meat tenderizer powder</a> with a little bit of water. Then use a cotton ball to apply it to the sting area, and leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes. Meat tenderizer has a chemical called papain that can break down wasp venom to reduce pain and swelling. </li><li>Baking soda. A paste of baking soda and a little water can also break down or neutralize the venom. as with the meat tenderizer, apply it to the sting area and leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes.</li><li>Tea bag. A cool, wet tea bag can help fight inflammation and reduce swelling. Run it under cold water and apply to your skin for 15 to 20 minutes.</li></ul><h2>What does a wasp look like?</h2>There are a number of different types of wasps, as well as other stinging insects that can look similar. Here's how to identify the different types of wasps and their lookalikes: <div type="image" title="A brown paper wasp lands on a leaf." height="4000" width="5333" msid="92884100" hostid="261" sizebytes="233692"></div><h3>Wasps vs. bees </h3>The main difference between wasps and bees is that bees are vegetarians and wasps are carnivores. According to Delaplane, wasps feed off animal protein — which is why you might see them eyeing your hamburger at a summer barbecue. <a href="https://affiliate.insider.com?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nationalgeographic.com%2Fanimals%2Finvertebrates%2Fgroup%2Fwasps%2F" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Wasps</a> are narrower than bees with pointed lower abdomens. Some types of bees, such as honey bees, will die after they sting, while wasps can sting more than once. While both insects will defend their nest if threatened, wasps tend to be more aggressive and use their stinger as a weapon for hunting. <h3>Yellow jackets vs. wasps</h3>Yellow jackets are a type of wasp that often have black and yellow coloring. They typically build nests underground, which can house a colony of <a href="https://www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/gardens-gardening/your-garden/help-for-the-home-gardener/advice-tips-resources/pests-and-problems/insects/wasps/yellow-jackets.aspx" target="_blank" rel="noopener">up to thousands</a> of the <keyword id="12113106" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="bugs" source="Orion">bugs</keyword>, depending on the time of year. Disturbing a yellow jacket nest can <a href="https://www.nps.gov/pore/planyourvisit/yoursafety_yellowjackets.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">cause a swarm</a>. Yellow jackets can be <a href="https://www.clemson.edu/extension/beekeepers/fact-sheets-publications/yellow-jackets.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">particularly aggressive</a> in the fall, when their food sources become more scant. Important: If you accidentally disturb a yellow jacket colony, cover your face and leave the area immediately.Like other wasps, they are carnivorous and are attracted to other bugs as well as human food and sweet drinks. Accidentally drinking a beverage that a yellow jacket has landed in could result in stings to the mouth or throat.<div type="image" title="A yellow and black wasp lands on a cup containing a red beverage." height="2847" width="3797" msid="92884102" hostid="261" sizebytes="128534"></div><h3>Hornets vs. wasps</h3>Hornets are a type of wasp that are often larger and thicker in size than other wasps. In the US, the most common hornets are the <a href="https://www.pestworld.org/news-hub/pest-articles/the-difference-between-paper-wasps-and-european-hornets/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">European hornet</a> — which has yellow and brown coloring — and the <a href="https://www.pestworld.org/pest-guide/stinging-insects/bald-faced-hornets/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">bald-faced hornet</a> — which is black and white. Note: The bald-faced hornet is actually a type of yellow jacket.They <a href="https://www.canr.msu.edu/news/bee-wasp-or-hornet-nest-which-one-is-it" target="_blank" rel="noopener">nest in hollow areas of trees</a> and structures such as barns and prey on other insects as well as tree sap and fruit. European hornets can be nocturnal and may be attracted to sweet human foods and drinks. Like other wasps, they can sting multiple times.<h2>How to avoid wasp stings</h2>Here are a few ways to <a href="http://ipm.ucanr.edu/PMG/PESTNOTES/pn7449.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">avoid wasps</a> and getting stung:<ul><li>Limit time outdoors during the day.</li><li>When eating or drinking outside, keep food covered and use a lid for your beverage. </li><li>If you're going to be in an area where there will be wasps, don't wear perfume or use scented soaps, since odors can attract the insects.</li><li>Avoid walking barefoot in grass, as you could disturb a yellow jacket nest.</li><li>If you have wasp nests on your property and are worried about getting stung, you should contact a professional about getting rid of them. </li></ul>Important: When you see a wasp, do not swat it away, Delaplane says. Swatting will put the wasp in defense mode and make it more likely to sting you. For example, these symptoms could include: <ul><li>Hives or swelling that is well beyond the sting area</li><li>Trouble breathing </li><li>Tickling or tightness in the throat or chest </li><li>Lightheadedness or dizziness </li><li>Vomiting </li><li>Fainting </li></ul>Insect sting allergies are rare. And while some may only experience a mild allergic reaction, more severe reactions can be fatal. In 2017, for example, allergic reactions to insect stings killed 89 Americans, according to the <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/68/wr/mm6829a5.htm#:~:text=During%202000%E2%80%932017%2C%20a%20total,Source%3A%20National%20Vital%20Statistics%20System." target="_blank" rel="noopener">Centres for Disease Control and Prevention</a>. Important: In order to develop an insect sting allergy, you need to be stung, Blair says - so you may not know you have an allergy until you experience symptoms. If you think you are having a severe allergic reaction to an insect sting, Blair says you should call 911 or your local emergency medical services right away. <h2>How to treat a wasp sting</h2>1. <a href="https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/conditions-and-diseases/insect-stings">Wash the affected site</a> thoroughly with soap and water.2. Apply ice to the sting area to decrease swelling and pain (leave it on for 10 minutes, then remove it for 10 minutes, over the course of 30 minutes to an hour).3. Raise the body part where the sting is located to help reduce swelling.4. What's shaking up the future of the retail pharmacy

Clover lost $67.4 million in 2019, according to state insurance filings reviewed by Business Insider. That compares to a $40.9 million loss in 2018. The deeper loss comes as Clover is growing its membership, adding roughly 10,000 new members in 2019, and enrolling an additional 12,000 going into 2020. "Clover's 2019 financial performance was consistent with expectations given the rapid membership growth that the Company experienced during 2019 (which has continued into 2020)," a spokeswoman for the company told Business Insider in an emailed statement. The company, based in San Francisco, offers private health-insurance plans for seniors, a product called <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/medicare-advantage">Medicare Advantage</a>. Competition for the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/medicare-advantage-enrollment-oscar-bright-devoted-clover-alignment-2020-1">more than 22 million Americans</a> enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans, and the thousands signing up daily as they turn 65, is fierce, with startups like Clover going up against industry giants like UnitedHealthcare, Humana, and Aetna. The company also operates in Pennsylvania, Texas, Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina, and Arizona.<h2>Key financial results from Clover's filings</h2><ul><li>Clover's revenue in New Jersey was $451.7 million in 2019, up from $290 million in 2018. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/clover-health-2018-financial-results-medicare-advantage-2019-3">Clover's 2018 financials were affected by a reinsurance agreement</a>. When factoring that in, Clover made $357 million in revenue. </li><li>The company paid out $453.7 million in medical expenses for its customers over the year.</li><li>That's about 100% of the premium revenue it took in from its members, otherwise known as the medical loss ratio. "Members that are new to Clover typically have relatively high medical loss ratios since information and medical care are generally not well-coordinated prior to joining Clover," the company told Business Insider in an emailed statement. </li><li>Clover had 42,441 Medicare Advantage members by the end of 2019, up from 32,425 the year before.</li><li>Going into 2020, Clover had enrolled 54,400 members, the company told Business Insider.</li></ul>Clover president Andrew Toy told Business Insider that as the company grows, there are two big expenses that contribute to the high medical loss ratio Clover has: the cost to acquire the member, as well as the cost to coordinate the member's care during that first year. For those who have been members for more than a year, the medical loss ratio is more favorable, he said. "We are actually angling to be profitable sooner than you might think," Toy said. But California isn't the only state in the union harboring highly-funded tech startups. <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image">UpserveUpserve CEO Sheryl Hoskins runs the most highly-funded startup in Rhode Island.</div></div></div>In this graphic, research firm <a href="https://www.cbinsights.com/research/well-funded-startups-us-map/">CB Insights identified the most highly-funded companies</a> in each of the 50 states, plus Washington, D.C. Some of those companies include Florida's Magic Leap, an augmented reality company that's disclosed $2.4 billion in funding, Illinois' Avant, a financial technology company that's raised $655 million, and Georgia's Kabbage, an online lending platform that has raised $490 million. The list also includes ten different unicorns - companies valued over $1 billion - from Washington, D.C.'s Vox Media to Utah's InsideSales.com. While hge amounts of equity funding can be found across the country, three of the states didn't have any companies that fit CB Insight's full criteria, which required that companies have raised at least $1 million in equity funding since January 2014. Those states are Alaska, Mississippi, and Wyoming.Alaska's Resource Data, for instance, has raised $1.59 million in equity funding, but it's raised the sum through multiple small angel rounds.
