Or those with even less.Private equity investments are called "private" because they involve buying shares or an ownership stake in private companies or funds, rather than ones traded publicly on the stock market.Adding private equity to your portfolio opens up a broad new world of investment opportunities that can offer above-average returns. Here's what you need to know before getting started with private equity investing. <h2>What is private equity?</h2>Private equity is a type of alternative investment. At its core, it consists of investment opportunities - in the form of companies or business ventures - that are not listed on a public stock exchange, like the Nasdaq or New York Stock Exchange. In other words, they do not trade daily; they are not available on an open market. How substantial? Let's put it this way: Some private equity funds will allow you to buy in for as little as $250,000. Others have capital contribution requirements that reach up into the millions. Many private equity funds are only available to institutional and accredited investors, who are thought to be more experienced and thus able to take on the risk of investing in securities not regulated by the SEC. An accredited investor is one with a net worth exceeding $1 million who's earned an income above $200,000 - or $300,000 if filing jointly - for the past two years. <h2>What are the main types of private equity investments?</h2>Private equity investments take a variety of shapes.<h3>Distressed funding</h3>Distressed funding deals with struggling businesses that have filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, allowing them to seek help by agreeing to restructure their business model and create a repayment plan for their debts. In some cases, private equity firms intend to help these businesses by changing up the management and turning the business around. Real estate is especially popular for these funds. Specifically, they often invest in commercial spaces, or in multifamily structures like apartment buildings. Other private equity funds invest in infrastructure projects like bridges and roadways.<h2>Cheaper ways to invest in private equity </h2>Although traditional private equity is only open to high-net-worth or accredited investors, some forms of PE are more democratic - they don't require six figures to play. Startups pay a 6% charge on funds raised, but only if the funding goal is reached.<h2>Mainvest</h2><a href="https://mainvest.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mainvest</a>, founded in 2018, specializes in supporting small brick-and-mortar businesses by letting investors deploy "community capital into the neighborhoods where they live, visit, and enjoy." Mainvest does not charge an upfront fee to launch a campaign and if the raise is not successful, there is no fee. Otherwise "in-network" funds (those you raise) are charged a 3% fee and "out-of-network" funds from Mainvest investors carry a 9% fee. Additional fees may apply.<h2>SeedInvest</h2><a href="https://www.seedinvest.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">SeedInvest</a> is an exclusive marketplace that accepts just 1% of the startups that apply. Startups pay a 7.5% placement fee and 5% equity.<h1>3 steps to raising capital with equity crowdfunding </h1>Before you start, determine the amount of financing you will need, refine your business plan, and prepare for the questions you're likely to face in the due diligence phase of your campaign.The amount you raise determines the certification requirements for your financial statement. Less than $107,000 only requires a company officer to certify. Amounts from $107,000 to $535,000 require independent review. Anything more than $535,000 requires independently reviewed or audited financial statements.Once you've laid the groundwork, the process of choosing a platform and conducting a campaign begins.<h3>1. Choose an equity crowdfunding platform</h3><ul><li>Start by researching platforms and zeroing in on those that tend to support projects similar to yours. "Each of these has implications regarding the marketing of the offering, future reporting requirements and future capital raise implications," says Jay Jung, managing partner and founder of <a href="https://embarcadvisors.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Embarc Advisors</a>, who urges founders to make sure the platform is knowledgeable when it comes to these regulations.</li><li>Ask pointed questions about the platform to ensure you will get the support you desire.</li></ul>CEO Jason Frishman at private fundraising company <a href="https://netcapital.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Netcapital</a> advises founders to ask three questions as part of the platform vetting process: "How expensive is this funding portal going to be for me to use? How quickly can I get my deal live on the platform? And how will the platform help me get attention for my offering?"Warning: Safdar Alam, CEO of the equity crowdfunding platform Maydan Capital Select, cautions that platforms that don't commit to significant due diligence pass all this risk onto retail investors and provide less support to founders.Once you've chosen a platform that meets your needs, register and prepare for the next step — selling yourself and your company.<h3>2. Pitch your business</h3>Your pitch to potential investors can be in writing or a video, depending on what format the platform accepts or prefers. Factors to consider with either include:<ul><li>Take a personal approach. Share who you are and why you started this project. Be relatable.</li><li>Share the mission. Explain the goal and the impact it will have on people, society, and the world.</li><li>Explain what's in it for investors.</li><li>Be transparent about how the funds will be used. Some are tightly structured, and others are more flexible. Make sure you understand the promotional structure of the platform you choose."The way the bigger platforms work is that they have certain events that get triggered which then leads to your startup being promoted on the platform," says Anna Gudmundson, CEO and founder of the startup, <a href="http://www.bioself.technology/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sensate BioSelf Technology</a>."It's a bit like if you build a website or a blog. Unless you promote it, not many people are going to visit it, and it's important that the founders understand the dynamics and algorithms that the platforms use to promote it to the crowd investors."Warning: Many sites will only let you access your funds if you reach your fundraising goal. Otherwise, the money raised is returned to investors.<h2>What happens after you've raised the money?</h2>What's next for startups once they raise funds through equity crowdfunding? Some use it for the stated purpose of the campaign and concentrate on growing the business. Others move on to banks or angel investors for their next or follow-on campaigns. Many return to the original crowdfunding platform for a second or even third round.Much of what happens next depends on the platform you select. If you have wisely selected a platform that does its due diligence and isn't full of low-quality candidates, ask about post-investment involvement, Alam says. "Platforms that request regular updates from founders should be valued compared to platforms that do not want any contact with the founders post-investment."<h2>What are equity crowdfunding's benefits and drawbacks?</h2>As with any funding system, equity crowdfunding has pros and cons, both for founders and investors. <h3>Pros</h3>The biggest benefit to investors and founders alike is that nonaccredited investors are able to participate, increasing the pool of potential backers. "Depending on the way you structure your traditional raise, you may be limited to the number of nonaccredited investors, or you may not be able to have any," says Andrea Sager, a lawyer and owner of <a href="https://thelegalpreneur.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Legalpreneur</a>, a legal advice subscription service for small businesses. "Crowdfunding allows you to let any number of nonaccredited investors in."The convenience for backers of investing online also makes raising capital easier for founders. "Anyone can invest with the click of a button. It doesn't get any easier than that for someone to be able to invest in your company," notes Frishman.Alam points to the versatility of equity crowdfunding. "This approach can also be used alongside more traditional fundraising from venture capital firms – as the entire round does not need to be executed on a crowdfunding platform."The ability to control the pace of the raise, is another issue that falls in favor of equity crowdfunding according to Steven Weinstein, CEO of early-stage growth investor <a href="https://seismic.company/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Seismic Capital</a>. "Typically when working with venture capitalists, startups are tied to quick turnaround times and deadlines to bring the product or service to market, regardless of whether or not it aligns with the time needed to refine the offering. With crowdfunding, startups are able to take a patient capital approach, forgoing immediate returns with the intent of gaining more substantial, lasting returns as their company grows."Equity crowdfunding is also a good way to engage the community and allow your customers to become part of the business, says Gudmundson. "Your customers are people who actually understand your product, so you're allowing them to be part of the round, as well as professional investors who find valuable early-stage companies to invest in as part of their high risk/reward portfolio."<h3>Cons</h3>Equity crowdfunding is time consuming and the involvement it requires from founders can hurt the bottom line. "It can quickly become a distraction to the true business if you don't have a solid marketing plan in place," notes Sager.Capitalization tables listing hundreds of small investors may scare off larger investors or worse, trigger disclosure requirements that can be costly and complicated, says Jung. "Thankfully, several crowdfunding platforms have introduced workarounds that allow the investors in the crowdfunding campaign to be aggregated as one registered shareholder on the cap table." Frishman points out that while equity crowdfunding platforms can be a big help in marketing a company, they do not underwrite or guarantee a successful capital raise. "A big trap when launching a campaign is assuming the platform will raise all the money for you."Alam points to another potential shortcoming that founders and investors should watch for. "Platforms that do not commit to significant due diligence, and pass all this risk onto retail investors without support, will treat the founders and the startup very differently than a platform that focuses on a lower volume of deals and specializes in specific sectors." Crowdfunding campaigns require intense involvement on the part of founders. As Gudmundson says: "The main thing is to understand that it doesn't run itself. Strong support from the right platform along with an easier process makes equity crowdfunding a good match for inexperienced first-timers as well.Review the pros and cons, especially the amount of involvement required. If you decide equity crowdfunding is for you, read and take the advice of experts to heart:"Marketing is key when it comes to crowdfunding. Having an existing audience or community tends to make crowdfunding easier," says Sager.Remember that just being listed on on a platform with tens of thousands of potential investors doesn't necessarily mean you're reach your funding target, Rawley says. "Investors are still looking for a solid team, executable business plan, and a path to an exit." Also remember that a large "anchor investor" will lend credibility to your campaign, Jung says. "Sometimes we will see a $2 million raise with an anchor investor coming in with a 10%-30% of the offering."

Equity crowdfunding gives startups an alternative to venture capital by raising money from smaller investors

<keyword id="108089" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Private-equity-firms">Private equity firms</keyword> witnessed an increase by 29% in the second quarter of the year in volumes when compared to the same period last year. A research report by <keyword id="2929136" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="VCC-Edge">VCC Edge</keyword> stated that the average deal value climbed 19% in the latest period. 
 
"Private equity investments in Q2 2015, excluding real estate, were recorded at $3.85 billion across 262 deals, an increase of 29% in deal volume and 43% in deal value, compared to Q2 2014. The average deal value jumped 19% to $20.48 million in the latest period from $17.14 million in 2014," stated VCC Edge. 
 
The report read that deals were back and big-ticket deals (at least $100 million) constituted 71% of the total private equity capital invested in Q2 2015. 
 
The private equity deals also grew by about 27% in the first six-months in 2015 compared to first six months of 2014. “2015 registered 513 PE deals valued at $8.3 billion from $4.9 billion investments in 403 deals,” the report said. 
 
The exits also came down by 3% in terms of deal volume.

Private equity firms see 29% jump in Q2

The pre-budget <keyword id="20613906" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="economic-survey" source="keywords">Economic Survey</keyword> highlights the need for measures to boost <keyword id="19973896" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="talent" source="keywords">talent</keyword> and <keyword id="19959621" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="productivity" source="keywords">productivity</keyword> through <keyword id="19974189" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="private-sector" source="keywords">private sector</keyword> investment, experts said on Monday. Finance Minister <keyword id="19916618" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nirmala-sitharaman" source="keywords">Nirmala Sitharaman</keyword> tabled the Economic Survey for 2023-24 in Parliament. Rumki Majumdar, Economist, <keyword id="20006170" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Deloitte-India" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Deloitte India" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Deloitte India">Deloitte India</keyword> said the Survey has highlighted measures to boost talent and productivity through private sector investment in <keyword id="20077463" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="skills" source="keywords">skills</keyword> (in addition to what the government is initiating), physical and digital connectivity and building state capacity and capabilities. She said <keyword id="19910977" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="MSMEs" source="keywords">MSMEs</keyword>, agriculture, education and <keyword id="19898684" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="employment" source="keywords">employment</keyword>, and upskilling as key pillars for uplifting the masses through jobs, income and skills. Aditi Nayar, Chief Economist and Head - Research &amp; Outreach, ICRA said the Survey stresses that in the medium term, growth needs to be supported by the private corporate sector as well as the state governments. On inflation, she said that "managing inflation is not just the prerogative of the RBI and its MPC, and would require active intervention by the Centre, especially in the arena of food price management. The realisation of both these paradigms is crucial to ensure an optimal growth-inflation mix over the medium term."

Survey highlights need for private investments to boost talent, productivity: Experts

Focusing on reviving private <keyword id="6362476" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="investments">investments</keyword>, <keyword id="6355261" type="POSITION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Finance-minister">Finance Minister</keyword> <keyword id="42575" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Arun-Jaitley">Arun Jaitley</keyword> is inviting foreign players to invest in the infrastructure space. He exuded confidence that the stuck reform measures like <keyword id="6354679" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="GST">GST</keyword> would go through as the numbers in the Upper House will change favourably soon. 

	No reform proposal has actually got stuck for long so far despite India being a 'noisy democracy', he said. 
 

	Jaitley was speaking at a breakfast session on 'India -- The next growth engine of the world', organised by industry body CII and consultancy BCG here on the sidelines of the WEF Annual Meeting. 
 

	"We have a very noisy democracy... But I am finding that there are more people who want to support the growth and the others are very minuscule minority... Any economy needs multiple engines of growth," he said. 
 

	"In the past we had fewer such engines and we need a few more. Public investment is one that we are doing. We are concentrating on infrastructure and for the first time in history we have been able to rationalise the subsidies," the Finance Minister added. 
 

	According to him, people are eventually going to pay for the goods and services they want to buy and for the weaker sections technology would be used to ensure that the benefits reach the right target group. 
 

	Noting that a series of reform measures are pending, Jaitley said some of these become symbol of whether India would be able to cross this obstacle or not. 
 

	"India is a noisy democracy but I am sure that we would be able to get all of them through. Some measures have got delayed but none of them have actually hit a complete road block," he added. 
 

	In days to come India will have to focus on reviving private investments, Jaitley said, adding, "we are asking people from all over the world to become partners in India's infrastructure growth story". 
 

	"I have always said the current rate of 7-7.5 per cent is not our real potential and we have potential to add 1-1.5 per cent. There is still head space that we have and I am sure we would be able to reach that," he said. 
 

	On GST, Jaitley said the good news is that all states are on board and all political parties, except one, are also on board. 
 

	"The paradox is that the party which drafted GST is not on board. But then the numbers in Rajya Sabha are going to favourably change soon and I am hopeful that the GST would be through," he added. 
 

	Emphasising that the reform process has a key role for states, the Finance Minister said: "We used to talk about cooperative federalism but I am happy to see now that states are competing with each other to attract investments. 
 

	"Most of the states that grow will actually add to the country's growth rate." 
 

	He added: "We, of course, have our own challenges. There are 55 per cent people in agriculture and that sector has not enough for these many people. The sector itself needs to be strengthened and then we had two bad monsoons. 
 

	"We were expecting to grow over 8 per cent, but inadequate monsoons not only led to agriculture production falling but the consumption power of rural economy also got hit." 
 

	Stressing that opening up the economy completely is another area of focus, Jaitley said, Railways was one of the touch-me-not sectors, operated entirely by the government. 

	"In railway infrastructure, we have allowed private sector participation and the next they are going to raise funds through bonds etc. Next, we are going to modernise the train stations and these are the causes that have been welcomed by the country." 
 

	On Defence, he said it was "completely closed although most of the purchases were from outside the country. We have opened up that sector and a lot of activities are happening there". 

	Further, Jaitley said: "We are conscious of the fact that the government alone cannot do everything. We are bringing weaker sections to the formal banking sector to help them become entrepreneur." 
 

	Another area was image of India on tax issues and the things have changed on that front and nobody now talks about that, he noted.

FM Arun Jaitley invites foreign players to revive private investment

<ul><li>According to reports, <keyword id="34499" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="private-equity">private equity</keyword> and <keyword id="6357097" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Venture-Capital">venture capital</keyword> investments grew 14% in February with investments worth $1.96 billion. </li><li>The investments are up thanks to large ticket deals across the country. </li><li>With India’s rising number of unicorns and relaxed norms for angel tax, the country is set to see funding deals across stages.</li></ul>For Indians startups it has been a great start to the year with increased funding. In February alone, private equity and venture capital investments grew 14% with investments worth $1.96 billion happening in India, according to data from Venture Intelligence, a data research firm. The month of January had seen a total of <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/business/india-business/pe-vc-funding-up-14-on-big-ticket-push/articleshow/68261744.cms">$1.71</a> billion investment for startups and businesses alike. That is because of large ticket <keyword id="7399281" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="investments-in-2019">investments in 2019</keyword> that led to the increase in total amount of funding in the first two months of 2019. According to the report, investments in Greenko Energy, Aadhar Housing Finance, Ayana Renewable Power along with a bunch of startup deals helped rake up the numbers in February this year. "An increase in large-ticket investments also reflects the rise in confidence of the investors and strengthening the role of PE/VC fraternity as growth capital providers," Pankaj Chopda, director, Grant Thornton India LLP had earlier told <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/stocks/news/pe-investments-see-36-rise-in-jan-grant-thornton/articleshow/68188905.cms">ET </a>regarding the growth in investments in January, For early-stage deals in the country, a big relief came in from the Indian government by changing the definition of startup to exclude the burden of Angel Tax. An entity will now be considered a startup for a period of 10 years from the date of its incorporation as opposed to the earlier norm of seven years, according to an official Gazette notification by the government. The exemption for angel tax for shares issued or proposed has also been hiked to an aggregate limit of ₹25 crore from ₹10 crore. This will likely further boost investments in the country as early stage investors will not be wary of tax. India’s fast-growing startups have garnered interest from PE/VC funds from across the world. There are now over 20 unicorns in the country. With many more like logistics startup Rivigo, e-commerce startup BigBasket steps away from rising to the unicorn status, India is surely set to see more funding soon. Large ticket deals drive rise in private equity investments in India this year

<div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right" style="width:400px"><div class="image">REUTERS/Jessica Rinaldi</div></div>More than 70% of college graduates in the class of 2012 had student loan debt, according to a <a href="http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052702303870704579298302637802002" target="_blank">recent analysis by the Wall Street Journal</a>, and the average debt burden is $29,400 a student. Some grads owe significantly more, particularly if they attended out-of-state or private school. 
Meanwhile, a Gallup study shows that <a href="http://online.wsj.com/news/interactive/EDUCATION0104?ref=SB10001424052702303870704579298302637802002" target="_blank">four in 10 college grads</a> end up working jobs that don't even require a college degree. 
With so much money and earning potential on the line, the choice between public and private college - a battle between cost, prestige, and academic rigor - may not be clear cut. 
Here, we take a look at the pros and cons of both: 
TUITION
Tuition and fees for a public four-year institution cost $20,823 for the 2011-12 school year - about $8,000 less than private institutions. 
Hands down, public universities are the better buy by definition alone. Because their funding is subsidized by the state, public schools can pass on those savings to students. Private institutions rely almost entirely on tuition and the generosity of donors, which is why students wind up paying more. However, since private colleges often have good financial aid offerings, it is possible for some students to pay less than they would elsewhere. 
Winner: Public
STUDENT DEBT LOAD
Tuition is rising at both public and private universities alike, which means more students will be forced to take on student debt to pay their way. 
For the 2010-11 school year, 57% of public four-year college students graduated with student loan debt, according to the College Board - an average of $23,800. Private students were worse off, with about two-thirds of alumnus leaving school nearly $30,000 in debt. 
Winner: Public
PRESTIGE
Even if you've never set foot on a private campus, just the word alone - private - lends an allure of exclusivity and prestige. The top 20 schools on U.S. News &amp; World Report's annual <a href="http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/rankings/national-universities/spp+50" target="_blank">Best College rankings</a> consistently go to private institutions for a reason. Class sizes are smaller, admission is selective, individual student attention is valued, and the curriculum is tough enough to attract top talent from around the world.
Still, it's a myth that all public universities offer subpar education. There are public universities with enough prestige to rival private institutions, and they arguably boast an even higher roster of successful alumni based on the attractiveness of their ubiquity and low cost alone. 
Winner: Private 
SOCIAL SCENE
Thanks to their affordability and proximity to home for most students, state schools offer a healthy social scene. You can't argue with the <a href="http://www.thebestcolleges.org/2012-princeton-review-party-school-rankings/" target="_blank">Princeton Review</a>. Public schools are where the party's at. 
But if you're interested in mingling with students from outside your home state, pursuing a degree at private institutions may be appealing. They often attract a wider variety of students from around the country (and the world). While the party scene may not be as hot as public schools, you'll get exposure to people who aren't all from the same geographic background.
Winner: Public
JOB PROSPECTS: 
While not all private colleges are equal, those that have the chance to attend a super elite, name-brand school may be better off. According to a 2012 <a href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/jennagoudreau/2012/10/15/the-10-best-colleges-for-your-bank-account/" target="_blank">analysis by financial site NerdWallet</a>, an Ivy League education is more likely to a catch recruiter's eye. Additionally, private school grads earn about 20% more than public school grads.
Still, there's no doubt that college graduates - regardless of their alma mater - fare better in the job world. For the first three months of 2013, the unemployment rate for consumers holding a bachelor's degree was <a href="http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.t04.htm">between 3.7% and 4.1%</a>. High school graduates saw unemployment rates twice as high.
Winner: Private
THE VERDICT: 
Public is the way to go for most undergraduates. 
Public or private, your chances of making it in the job world are higher the minute you graduate from college. But whether you're willing to shell out tens of thousands more dollars to pay for the prestige of a private four-year degree is the question you'll have to answer. For undergrads, there isn't much a private college can offer in the way of curriculum and social life that a public institution can't. Private college might offer a slight edge in small class sizes and future earnings, but the benefit doesn't seem to outweigh the price tag of going public.
Our advice: If your state schools offer the area of study and the social vibe you're looking for, do your future self a favor and cut costs now. Pursue a graduate degree at a private university, where you'll benefit more from the academic rigor and specialized areas of study.
