And we don't drive a lot of Ferraris.My name's Andy Kay. I'm a private investigator, and I'm also the owner of Kay and Associates Investigations here in Los Angeles for about the last 30 years. Today I'm going to be looking at private-investigator scenes from movies and television. "Ace Ventura: Pet <keyword id="25276" type="POSITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="detective">Detective</keyword>" (1994)Gruff Man: What do you want?Ace Ventura: HDS, sir. And how are you this afternoon? All righty, then.Andy: I've been a delivery guy a couple of times. I've been a waiter. I've actually asked a maître d' to give me the bottle of wine to deliver to the table one time. So, yeah, it happens.There's actually laws against impersonating another person. Walking up with the outfit, nobody's going to say anything about it. If you go up there and say, "Hey, I am FedEx," then you're stepping over a line.Gruff Man: Son of a b----!Ace: That was a close one, ladies and gentlemen.Andy: When little animals go missing, unless we have good information that somebody has stolen it or it's a big dog, expectations are pretty low. It happens, and we've gotten some back. Nobody's going to do it like that, because you would not know, first off, that the dog was going to be anywhere accessible in the first place, that the guy is going to even answer the door in the second place. There is just so much presumption in this case that it would just never happen that way. Except for Jim Carrey.[Ace's engine sputters]Ace: No problem! It gets flooded. We'll just wait a few seconds.[Gruff Man attacks his car with a baseball bat]Andy: All that planning just to be caught at the end with a baseball bat. Usually we don't have to worry about getaway. The big thing about being a private investigator is to be private, so that they don't ever know we were there.I would give this clip a 2. It's designed to be comedic, and it's very good at it.Rating: 2/10"<keyword id="657004" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Sherlock">Sherlock</keyword>" (2010)Sherlock: Ah, sergeant, we haven't met.Dimmock: Yeah, I know who you are. And I'd prefer it if you didn't tamper with any of the evidence.Andy: The police officer, first thing he said was, "I prefer you not be disturbing our evidence," and that's exactly correct. They would have never let him in those doors at that point. Once they were there, they would have taken over the scene. The disdain for what he was saying shows you that they are not big fans of private investigators, which is a lot of the times the situation with police officers. A lot of times we are working with the police, a lot of times we are working against the police.Dimmock: Left-handed?Sherlock: I'm amazed you didn't notice. All you have to do is look around this flat. Coffee table on the left-hand side. Coffee mug handle pointing to the left. Power sockets, habitually he used the ones on the left.Andy: You can notice things that are out of sync. I mean, that's extreme, for sure. And all that's going to come out in pathology anyway. They're going to know if he's right- or left-handed. There should be dozens and dozens of photos of the <keyword id="39494" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Crime">crime</keyword> scene. So they're going to notice some of those things. There's nothing there that wouldn't come out through the normal process anyway. And the private investigator's not going to be a part of that.There's a lot of different things you can tell about people from looking at them and appearance-wise, but if you start assuming too much, you might've fallen into a trap for what they're, you know, trying to make themself be portrayed as. So, you look. You don't draw conclusions that way.I would rate that at probably a 5, just because it's entertaining and you have to make it such, otherwise it's not going to work.Rating: 5/10"Veronica Mars" (2014) [phone rings as Veronica photographs Gia through her window]Gia: Hi, this is Gia.Andy: Well, there's a whole lot of violations of law in this one. We have this thing called expectation of privacy that we're supposed to work within. And so if you can see something from public view, without magnifying it, you can record it. If you can hear a conversation in public, again, the expectation of privacy is gone. So you can do that. Taping phone calls, it's a two-party state. It's in California, obviously. They said they're in West Hollywood. So you cannot record that phone call. If she was licensed, she wouldn't be for much longer if she was caught doing it.You can get the information other ways. And you definitely couldn't use it in any kind of a court or a prosecution, because they're going to toss it all out. So it's worthless for anything other than developing corroboration with other evidence that you find.Gia: Hey, something's happening. You need to get over here right away.Andy: I've had situations like this where we actually just rented the apartment across the street. That way, if I can open my window and see into theirs, it's fair game. So there's ways around what she's doing. And this is, obviously, an area where she wouldn't expect anybody to be looking in on her. Although if people have public access to that roof, she could also be in the same situation.Say it's a rooftop bar and she's just sitting there at a table. She has the right if she can see it. I have to get a closer lookYes, sometimes cameras do come in handy. Now there's much smaller magnifications that we use that do the same job. We also use drones a lot with magnification, because if we can see it from there, we can get anywhere on it. If it's in public space, we can magnify on it.I'll give this clip two stars, just because it's absolutely nothing a private investigator is going to do.Rating: 2/10"Knives Out" (2019) Benoit Blanc: Did you converse with Harlan at that time?Richard: Well, he was there, we must have spoke.Benoit: In his study?Richard: I don't think so.Andy: From an interrogation standpoint, it was actually pretty good. He left information out of the question so that they could try to extrapolate on it, and that way you can see which way they're going. You could see that Don Johnson was coached a little bit on how to react while you're trying to hide something and you're trying to convey something else. So it was done well. Just the way he led his expressions and then, "Oh, yeah," you know, kind of things. Things like that. The things that you look for are when they look away a lot, when they have to stumble, when they say things that are just out of line anyway. They try to divert from something when you ask a question.Now, a lot of people will hang their hat off of watching some ex-FBI agent tell you how to read people. And once you do that, you start missing everything else. You really have to trust yourself and your interactions with people. So you really have to pay attention to those body cues and facial cues without becoming a victim of counting on every single one to mean a certain thing.Lieutenant Elliot: Who hired you?Benoit: I do not know. An envelope of cash showed up at my apartment yesterday with a news clipping of Thrombey's death.Andy: Well, actually just today we got a case where we have an anonymous client. I know she's a female. That's all I really know about her. So it's very strange, but, yeah, it happens. You really want to know who your clients are the majority of the time.I give it ... 7. One of the more realistic portrayals so far.Rating: 7/10"Chinatown" (1974)Jake: What makes you certain that your husband is involved with someone?Evelyn: A wife can tell.Andy: Good scene. Now, as I recall, in this movie, that was not the actual person she was portraying herself to be. But she was right about that statement. When she said, "A woman knows these things," she was right. Women know. We actually keep the numbers every year, 'cause we do a lot of these cases all over the globe. It's always between 96% and 99% of the women that hire us are right. Guys are about 50%. They know about half the time if it's really happening or not. They just tend to be more wary of other men around or things like that. So it's about 50% with guys, about 96% to 99% with women.One of the big giveaways is being overprotective of the cellphones and the pads and any of their other devices. We've got a great digital-forensics department. Somebody brings us a computer or a telephone, we can retrieve, you know, deleted texts, deleted pictures, all those kind of things.Jake: Mrs. Mulwray, this type of <keyword id="49112" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Investigation">investigation</keyword> can be hard on your pocketbook. It takes time.Evelyn: Money doesn't matter to me, Mr. Gittes.Andy: Most investigations are expensive. It's not a cheap thing to get into. For infidelity cases, I've had cases go where we were watching somebody 24/7 for three weeks. And I got on the phone with my client, and I said, "Hey, he's not doing what you think he's doing." And she says, "Andy, please stay on this. I know." And so we did, and, honestly, it wasn't two days later before he was at one of the high-end hotels in Beverly Hills with two prostitutes. And then three days later, we end up at a townhouse up in Agoura where he paid for it and he's had a woman living there with him for years that nobody knew anything about. So sometimes it takes a long time.I would rate the accuracy of this scene a 10 out of 10.Rating: 10/10"Sherlock Holmes" (2009) Andy: Following people on foot, you definitely want to do a lot of the things he did. Stay out of sight, don't look ridiculous enough to everybody else around you that they're saying, "Hey, there's a guy, like, hiding behind the wall watching you go around corners." You don't want to do that. You always have to look just like you belong there, because it's not just that person you have to worry about seeing you. You have everybody else that if you're acting weird and stalkerish, they're gonna go tell somebody. Last thing you want to do if you're following somebody is have the police pull you over to ask you what you're doing. That kind of ends the surveillance right there.Quite often when we end up in a on-foot situation where we're doing a surveillance, it started off in a vehicle. So you don't know exactly what you're going to be able to do, and like I talked about in some of the other situations, you have to be able to flow with it as things change. Almost all my guys, when they're doing surveillance, they'll have a couple extra shirts or tops or maybe a pair of shorts. Anything that they can switch out fast to make themselves look different and not catch the eye over and over and over again. Because if they're walking in an area where there's not a lot of people for a long time, a lot of people take walks in parks, things like that. So you have to kind of be ready to be on foot.It wasn't terrible. You want your disguise not to be so ridiculous that it's noticed as ridiculous, because then they're going to pay attention to you. His was a little over the top there. I'd give him a 7. 8. We'll go 8.Rating: 8/10"Magnum, P.I." (1980) [gun fires] [tires squeal]Andy: The biggest misconception people have about private investigators is that we're always in gunfights and that we're out arresting people. And that's not very often what happens. I'm not going to say it doesn't ever happen, but not very often. And we don't drive a lot of Ferraris. I would give this clip a 2.Rating: 2/10"Vertigo" (1958)[one car following another car]Andy: In that scene, it's much better than watching the subject of the investigation being followed by a red Ferrari half a car length behind him and not noticing it. If you can't be out of sight, blend in. You want to use cars that fit in everywhere. I mean, we use a lot of Priuses in Los Angeles.The other thing is, anytime you're following somebody and you end up in a situation where you're in a lot of traffic, odds are they're going to take a lot of turns, things like that. Of course, use a very inconspicuous car and also try to use several. That way somebody can leapfrog these. We can have a car on the opposite way. And if they come and we know that this one's going to take a left, "Hey, coming towards you." Then you're already in the street over, you pick up the car, you go off. The next one turns in behind and then tries to leapfrog ahead. If we have to speed, we do it.It was amazing, 'cause he was actually keeping an OK distance, but there was never, ever any traffic in between them. Woman parks, and he stops right in the lane and sits and watches her. That's a sure way to be seen. So, not a good tail. If you think somebody is tailing you, start making unnecessary turns into places that are odd and then make multiple turns. Make them follow you into those turns.I'll give him 5, 'cause I like Jimmy Stewart.Rating: 5/10"True Detective" (2014) Rust: I remember there was no physical evidence connecting Dora Lange to the dude's place out in the woods, meaning it probably didn't happen out there.Andy: Yeah, it still happens a lot. We use a lot of big whiteboards with a lot of drawings through in this, and then a lot of those get erased as we go. And we have lots of mirrored rooms that the same thing happens with dry erase and we put pictures on so we can see them, and as things develop and change, most cases just don't need that kind of investigation, but we use it a lot.Fiona: Rest of the family, they don't really talk to Aunt D.Andy: There's a whole plethora of things that we can do that law enforcement can't do. We can talk to people, I don't have to read you your rights. I can start questioning you from the beginning with the intent of having you confess to me. Obviously, the biggest thing is I can go anywhere in the world and work, and I don't have to let anybody know I'm there. And we don't need to take a ton of time for approvals. So, if you tell me that you need to have a certain thing done, we can prioritize it because you're paying us to do it, whereas law enforcement may never prioritize it. So they may never get to it just because they're overrun. In that part he did pretty good, I thought.Rating: 7/10"Searching" (2018)Andy: In this scene, you've got a father who's looking for a lost daughter. He's obviously very bereaved. I think he's doing the right thing by going through this. I think this is a very common scene. I think that a lot of people do these types of things when this happens, even before they call us. Social media, websites, places where they have memberships, things like that are always important in those kind of investigations. We employ them a lot.Some of the times you will use photographs and things and do reverse imaging. Now, I'm not talking about doing a Google reverse image. We use a lot of the same soft- and hardware that the FBI uses, that a lot of law enforcement uses, and it's only available to licensed investigators or law enforcement. So we have very good people that go and dig this stuff out. And a lot of times, if you have a daughter that's missing or a son that's missing, if we can have their computers, we can get a lot of information about what their thought process was before they ended up missing.There is no such thing as secure on the internet. Nowhere. If it can't be gotten right now, it'll be available some other time. You just see what happened to Facebook, where Mark Zuckerberg's phone numbers and everything else ended up hacked from his own site. So, nothing is safe. I don't care who you are. I don't care what site it is. If you're putting it out there, you might as well expect that it's going to be accessible to anyone. So, at some point, if the right person wants to get in there and dig long and hard enough and invest whatever it is, time or money, they're going to find it.I would give this a 10 out of 10. It's a very accurate depiction of what would happen.Rating: 10/10

Private investigator rates 10 private detective scenes in movies and TV shows

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right click-to-enlarge"><div><div class="image on-image"><a title_source="China state TV" title_caption="" class="zoomin" href="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/53e4a82decad0494715f163f-960/humphrey1_2653862b.jpg"></a>China state TV</div></div></div>Peter Humphrey, a British private detective, has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison in China for his role in the investigation of a corruption scandal inside GlaxoSmithKline, <a href="http://www.scmp.com/news/china/article/1568950/live-gsk-private-investigator-peter-humphrey-wife-stand-trial-privacy">according to the South China Morning Post</a>.
Humphrey's son previously <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/newsbysector/pharmaceuticalsandchemicals/11019861/Peter-Humphrey-trial-GlaxoSmithKline-to-blame-says-son.html">blamed the drug company for his father's plight</a>, according to The Telegraph.
Humphrey, 58, and his wife Yu Yingzeng already languished in a Chinese jail for a year before trial. He was charged with accessing private information on Chinese citizens illegally in the course of his investigation of Vivian Shi, GSK's former government relations manager, and her connections to the Chinese government. Humphrey was commissioned to investigate Shi after a secretly filmed <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/mark-reilly-gsk-sex-video-and-china-bribery-allegations-2014-6">video showing a GSK executive having sex with his girlfriend</a> inside their private apartment was sent to senior GSK executives. The video was apparently a message targeting Mark Reilly, the British chief of GSK's China division, who was conducting his own internal company inquiry into whether Chinese employees of GSK had paid bribes to promote the company's products. But <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/mark-reilly-gsk-sex-video-and-china-bribery-allegations-2014-6#ixzz39nIZRx2r">GSK did not tell Humphrey of the existence of the sex tape</a> or the bribery allegations until weeks after he had started his investigation. The company also did not tell him about a series of detailed emails that a whistleblower had sent GSK executives alleging a bribery scheme.
Instead, GSK asked Humphrey to find out what Shi's exact links were to China's government. During his investigation - and his work for other companies - Humphrey allegedly gathered thousands of documents on Chinese nationals, and sold that info to Western corporations. The court found both Humphrey and Yu guilty of violating citizens' rights.
Here's how the verdict came down, at the end of a one-day trial, <a href="http://www.scmp.com/news/china/article/1568950/live-gsk-private-investigator-peter-humphrey-wife-stand-trial-privacy">according to the Post:</a>
11.07 pm: The couple have five days to appeal this verdict. Court is adjourned.
11.05 pm: The court sentences Yu to two years and in prison on charges of "illegally obtaining private information", and a fine of 150,000 yuan.
11.00 pm: The court sentences Humphrey to two years and six months in jail on charges of "illegally obtaining private information", a fine of 200,000 yuan, and deportation from China after serving the jail term.
10.30 pm: The verdict will be released after the court rests.
A company spokesperson told Business Insider, "GSK China hired ChinaWhys [Humphrey's company] in April 2013 to conduct an investigation following a serious breach of privacy and security related to the company's China general manager. They were not hired to investigate the substance of the allegations of misconduct made by the whistleblower."

I would not blame this on China. The cause is not the Chinese, it is GSK":
But GSK allegedly denied to Mr Humphrey and his wife that any of the allegations of bribery in the whistleblower's emails were true.
"They said the allegations were untrue," said Harvey. "Then two weeks later they said actually these things did happen. My father would have changed the conditions of the investigation if he had known. He would have investigated the allegations instead of this one person. I do not think as an investigator you would have taken the risk of investigating a whistleblower before you investigated the allegations."
... "When I saw my dad last Friday, I mentioned GSK once. I mentioned Reilly to him once. He expressed a very low opinion of Reilly."
GSK fired 20 Chinese staff after the whistleblower emails emerged. GSK says it investigated the claims, but could not verify them specifically. "While some fraudulent behaviour relating to expense claims was found, we did not at that time find evidence to substantiate the specific allegations," <a href="http://www.thesundaytimes.co.uk/sto/business/Companies/article1427786.ece">the company said at the time.</a>

Private Detective Sentenced To Prison In GlaxoSmithKline's Chinese Sex Tape Fiasco

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">ReutersBarry Sherman and his wife, Honey.</div></div></div><ul><li>Barry and Honey Sherman's family hire private detectives to investigate the couple's mysterious death earlier this month.</li><li>The detectives will "ensure that no stone is left unturned."</li><li>Police have not published an update since December 17.</li></ul> The family of Barry and Honey Sherman, the Canadian pharmaceutical billionaires found strangled in the basement of their Toronto mansion, have reportedly hired private detectives to solve the mystery of their deaths.It is now two weeks since the bodies of the couple were discovered by a real estate agent, and Toronto police are yet to publish a meaningful update since December 17.Now, Brian Greenspan, the renowned Canadian lawyer acting for the Shermans' family, has retained the services of two private detectives to carry out an independent investigation.<a href="https://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/toronto/private-investigators-retained-to-probe-deaths-of-barry-and-honey-sherman/article37451200/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">He told Canadian newspaper The Globe and Mail</a> that the investigators, named as former Toronto Police Service detectives Michael Davis and Tom Klatt, will "provide a second lens and to ensure that no stone is left unturned."The Globe and Mail reported that a second autopsy was conducted on the Shermans before they were buried. Private detectives are now investigating the mysterious deaths of Barry and Honey Sherman, the Canadian billionaires found strangled in their basement

The paper revealed that Michelle Young had hired Simon Sutton, described as "a controversial fraud investigator".
The Mail says Young was particularly paranoid about enquiries on his wealth. He had stated that the hunt for the money was driving him crazy, and he had even demanded to be confined for treatment under the Mental Health Act.
In one of Britain's biggest divorce cases, <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2869263/Horror-plunge-tycoon-Scot-Young-s-ex-wife-hired-controversial-private-eye-pursue-money-just-weeks-impaled-railings-outside-London-flat.html?ITO=1490&amp;ns_mchannel=rss&amp;ns_campaign=1490&amp;utm_source=twitterfeed&amp;utm_medium=twitter" target="_blank">Michelle had hired up to eight private detectives to search for her husband's assets</a>, according to the Daily Mail. 
The case has seen several twists although Scotland Yard has said the death is not considered suspicious.

In the divorce trial, Young had repeatedly claimed he was not able to pay the maintenance fee to his former wife and daughters, although the judge in charge convicted him for contempt of court for hiding his assets from the inquiry.
In 2013, Young spent six months in prison for that sentence. 
Although Young's friends <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/crime/11285293/Scot-Young-Friend-questions-whether-death-was-suicide.html" target="_blank">have claimed that he would have never committed suicide</a>, Scotland Yard is under pressure to open an inquiry after <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/crime/11287793/Scot-Young-Ring-of-death-claims-after-four-friends-also-commit-suicide.html" target="_blank">The Telegraph revealed that four of his friends and business associates</a> have also died in mysterious circumstances in the last four years. 
The group included the exiled oligarch Boris Berezovsky, who was found hanging in his Surrey house in 2013.

The revelation is part of a massive court case between the London Taxi Driver Association (LTDA) and the divisive taxi booking app, <a href="http://www.standard.co.uk/news/london/black-cab-drivers-paying-detectives-to-pose-as-uber-customers-ahead-of-court-case-9879091.html">the Evening Standard reports</a>. 
T<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/london-uber-taxi-wars-2014-6">he LTDA launched a private prosecution against Uber</a>. Black cab drivers, who have long dominated London's streets, are angry about <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/uber-the-next-100-billion-company-2014-5">the rise of San Francisco-based Uber,</a> which is undercutting traditional services by up to 50%. 
The LTDA claims Uber's fare calculator is basically a taxi metre, and that taxi metres are only legal in licensed black cabs, <a href="http://www.standard.co.uk/news/london/black-cab-drivers-paying-detectives-to-pose-as-uber-customers-ahead-of-court-case-9879091.html">the Standard explains</a>. The High Court is set to rule one way or another on the issue. 
In the meantime, <a href="http://www.thesundaytimes.co.uk/sto/news/uk_news/article1487089.ece">The Sunday Times reports</a> the taxi association has enlisted undercover investigators to spy on Uber and see how its drivers pick up passengers and work out fares. Steve McNamara, the general secretary of the LTDA, told The Sunday Times: "In order to prosecute them we obviously had to get evidence and ride in the cars and private detectives and all of that."

One of Docker's star engineers got so many death and rape threats, the company hired private detectives to protect her

Skakel, a nephew of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethel_Kennedy">Ethel Kennedy</a>, was convicted in 2002 of bludgeoning his neighbor Martha Moxley with a golf club in 1975 when they were both 15 years old in wealthy Greenwich, Conn.
Just last week, a judge ruled Skakel's lawyer was ineffective. The judge also went to great lengths to point out there <a href="http://www.ctpost.com/news/item/PDF-Skakel-decision-24683.php">wasn't much evidence of his guilt</a> in the 1975 murder that went cold for more than 20 years.
That ruling prompted the legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin to write a column proclaiming that "<a href="http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/comment/2013/10/michael-skakel-gets-a-new-trial.html">the jury got this one right</a>" and declaring the ruling "peculiar." Toobin, who covered the trial, isn't the only person convinced of Skakel's guilt.
Now-deceased writer <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dominick_Dunne">Dominick Dunne</a> is arguably responsible for reviving interest in the case in the '90s after he wrote a novel based on Moxley's death called "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/A-Season-Purgatory-Novel/dp/0345522222">A Season in Purgatory</a>." In 2000 Dunne wrote a Vanity Fair article that laid out the case against Skakel - part of which Dunne uncovered himself.
In 1975, Moxley was killed outside her house with a 6-iron golf club owned by Skakel's mother, Anne Reynolds Skakel. Michael's brother, Thomas, was a suspect in the case, as was a tutor who lived with the Skakels, Dunne writes. Nobody was ever arrested, though suspicion continued to hang over the two Skakel sons.
Dunne got an incredibly hot tip on the case in 1996. That year, he met with an unnamed 24-year-old journalist who told him that Michael Skakel's father Rushton hired a private detective agency in New York to look into Moxley's murder several years earlier because he wanted to lift the cloud of suspicion from his sons.
The private detectives - who signed confidentiality agreements - interviewed all seven children in the Skakel family. For the first time, Michael Skakel revealed to detectives that he climbed a tree outside Moxley's window and masturbated the night she died. Michael Skakel reportedly had a crush on Moxley, whom his brother Thomas was dating.
Detectives spent three years working on the investigation, which ultimately found that Michael Skakel had "in all probability killed" Moxley, according to Dunne's characterization. The detectives hired the 24-year-old who ultimately met with Dunne to turn the investigation into a narrative. Rushton Skakel stashed the report away, according to Dunne.
The report was destined to see the light of day, though; the 24-year-old source leaked it to Dunne. Dunne, in turn, handed the report to Mark Fuhrman, a former LAPD detective who was looking for a case to investigate. Fuhrman (who had been embroiled in <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Fuhrman">controversy over the O.J. Simpson case</a>) took the report and wrote "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Murder-Greenwich-Killed-Martha-Moxley/dp/006109692X">Murder in Greenwich: Who Killed Martha Moxley</a>?" in 1998.
<a href="http://www.ctpost.com/local/article/Michael-Skakel-case-timeline-4929699.php">That year</a>, a grand jury began investigating the murder. Skakel was arrested in 2000. CNN has published an excerpt of the report, which had this to say about Michael Skakel's mental state at the time of the murder:
Michael, at the time, was plagued with serious emotional problems, living, by many accounts, a reckless and drug-fueled existence. What gradually emerged, from that point forward, was a portrait of a deeply, and somewhat enigmatically, troubled young man. In this light, and during the course of Sutton Associates' investigation, serious questions and unresolved issues have been raised about Michael and the murder of Martha Moxley. At the very least, it is fair to say Michael Skakel has, for whatever reason, often acted out in ways certain to arouse suspicion. Reportedly, Michael once even confessed to the murder of Martha Moxley in a therapy session while a patient at the Elan treatment center. He quickly recanted.
In seeking a new trial, Skakel has had the support of his cousin, environmental lawyer Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., who has said the new trial will prove <a href="http://www.today.com/news/rfk-jr-says-skakels-new-trial-will-prove-his-innocence-8C11456579">Skakel didn't kill Moxley</a>.
Skakel also apparently has the support of the judge who granted him a new trial, who wrote that "it would be an understatement to say that the state did not possess overwhelming evidence of [Skakel's] guilt." The judge also pointed out that there was never any physical evidence against Michael Skakel.

We need to adapt our approaches to cybersecurity so we are more likely to detect an intrusion before it is too late. This means more regularly scanning networks, applying new technological tools to detect intrusions, and better sharing of threat signatures so an attack on one does not lead to an attack on many. JEB BUSH: Here's my plan to address the monumental threat of cyber attacks

The company has received a secretly recorded video of Reilly having sex with his girlfriend. And the private detective that Reilly hired to figure out who had planted a camera inside his apartment is in a Chinese prison, where he has made <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/china-business/10267827/British-investigator-admits-wrongdoing-on-Chinese-TV.html">a ritualistic forced confession on Chinese TV.</a>
Meanwhile, an as-yet anonymous whistleblower is sending GSK executives stunning emails claiming that <a href="http://uk.reuters.com/article/2014/06/29/uk-gsk-china-idUKKBN0F40YR20140629">GSK paid up to £283 million in bribes</a> to Chinese doctors to prescribe its medicines.
A<a href="http://www.thesundaytimes.co.uk/sto/business/Companies/article1427786.ece"> stunning piece of reporting in the London Sunday Times</a> shows that Reilly and the detective may well be innocent, victims of corruption in China's security apparatus and the country's own need to demonstrate that it is doing something to fight corruption.
The U.K. Serious Fraud Office opened an investigation into the bribery allegations in May, <a href="The%20UK's%20Serious%20Fraud%20Office%20in%20May%20">according to the Financial Times</a>. A U.S. probe may follow, presumably under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. Criminal charges may be filed.
The story starts in 2012, according to the Sunday Times, when 23 anonymous emails were sent to Chinese authorities alleging that doctors were being bribed with the knowledge of GSK management there.
Inside GSK, management suspected that Vivian Shi, the company's head of government affairs, sent the emails. There was no evidence, but GSK investigated her travel expenses and eventually she left the company sometime after October 2012 along with her boss, John Lepore, who joined media group Reed Elsevier as head global government affairs. (There are no allegations of wrongdoing against Lepore or Shi. Neither of them immediately returned a message from Business Insider requesting comment.)
At that point, GSK asked Reilly to take over GSK China even though he did not speak Chinese. This is what happened next, <a href="http://www.thesundaytimes.co.uk/sto/business/Companies/article1427786.ece">according to The Sunday Times</a>:
ON JANUARY 16 last year the allegations returned, but closer to home. A bombshell email landed in the inboxes of 13 executives at Glaxo and two people at PwC, its auditor. This time it was in perfect English.
Sent by "gskwhistleblow-er@gmail.com", it was headlined: "Notification of bribery by GSK in China."
The allegations were extensive and granular in detail. The whistleblower alleged Glaxo falsified its books and records to conceal illegal marketing practices. It allegedly operated a "pervasive cash advance bribery scheme" under which a Citibank (China) account was used to send £1,000 a month to the bank accounts of Chinese sales staff. They spent the money on entertainment, gifts and cash payments, the whistleblower alleged.
Twenty Chinese staff were fired, the whistleblower claimed. GSK says it investigated the claims, but could not verify them. "While some fraudulent behaviour relating to expense claims was found, we did not at that time find evidence to substantiate the specific allegations," <a href="http://www.thesundaytimes.co.uk/sto/business/Companies/article1427786.ece">the company said</a>.
<a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/newsbysector/pharmaceuticalsandchemicals/10934381/Undercover-sex-tape-deepens-GSKs-China-scandal.html">The company told The Telegraph</a>: "We have zero tolerance for any kind of corruption in our business and … we take action against any breaches."
On March 16, 2013, GSK's London-based CEO Andrew Witty received an email containing a video of Reilly having sex with his girlfriend in his apartment, part of a gated development that had passcards for access and closed-circuit TV for security. After some meetings at GSK's HQ in London, Reilly was given permission to hire Peter Humphrey, 58, a private detective who ran his own firm, Chinawhys. He was assigned to investigate Vivian Shi and her connections to the Chinese government. But Humphreys was not told about the existence of the sex video, nor the whistleblower emails, until much later - in late June 2013.
By July 8, Humphrey became convinced that the allegations were credible, The Sunday Times says. But on July 10, Humphrey and his Chinese-American wife were arrested by Chinese officials and have been held in detention ever since.
In August 2013, <a href="http://english.cntv.cn/program/newshour/20130827/102867.shtml">Humphrey made a forced confession on Chinese TV to accessing private information on Chinese citizens illegally</a>.
Reilly returned to China in an attempt to clear his name but on May 14, 2014, was charged by the Chinese with "presiding over a web of corruption," according to The Sunday Times - even though he had been the person originally sent to China to clear it up.

Mr Reilly remains in China and, although he is not in custody, he is not allowed to leave the country, according to people familiar with the matter. He is still a GSK employee but has been replaced as China head.
