<p>Two of the most important Italian families were joined on July 25 as Monaco's Pierre Casiraghi - the grandson of actress-turned-princess Grace Kelly - and Italian heiress Beatrice Borromeo said "I do" in the first of two wedding ceremonies. </p><p>The civil ceremony in Monaco was limited to just 70 guests, but followed by a grand after-fête at the royal palace. <p>Yesterday, the Princess, who is the sister of Prince Albert II, attended a fundraising dinner for Monaco's new national museum. The royal wore a black dress and nude heels that looked strangely like feet.</p>
<p>The tromp l'oeil <keyword id="21227" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="shoes">shoes</keyword>, complete with painted toenails, were part of <a href="http://www.refinery29.com/celine-pedicure-shoe"><span>Céline</span>'s spring/summer 2013 collection</a>, and generated a ton of buzz from fashion bloggers last fall.</p>

Monaco's Princess Caroline Wore Some Of The Weirdest Shoes We've Ever Seen

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Pauline Ducruet, 26, is the founder of the gender-neutral <keyword id="6" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="fashion">fashion</keyword> line, <a href="https://alter-designs.com">Alter Designs</a>. </li><li>Born and raised in Monaco, Ducruet is a granddaughter of Grace Kelly.</li><li>Like entrepreneurs without royal lineage, she went to college before working internships that led to her launching a business.</li><li>In an interview with Business Insider, she describes why gender-neutral fashion is the future of the industry, why sustainability is so important, and the pressure that comes with being from her family.</li><li>"My work has to be irreproachable," she says.</li></ul><p>Pauline Ducruet, 26, isn't so different from most young entrepreneurs these days.</p><p>After college, she bounced around a bunch of jobs after a series of internships and got to the point where she was ready to launch her own business, and she spent two years getting it on its feet.</p><p>Then she was met with the sudden, forceful winds of the pandemic. </p><p>Most entrepreneurs don't have quite her family background, though. Born and raised in Monaco, Ducruet is a granddaughter of Grace Kelly through her mother, Princess Stéphanie of Monaco. A member of the Monegasque Royal Family, her uncle is reigning monarch Prince Albert II of Monaco, and she is 16th in line to the throne.</p><p>Ducruet's business, founded in 2019, is Alter Designs, a gender-neutral fashion brand she says she self-funded. She's obviously grateful to have her family background, but she also said it's added to the pressure of running her own business.</p><p>"My work has to be irreproachable," she said. </p><p>The brand is gender-neutral, she told Business Insider, because she wanted her clothes to be for everyone. Personally, she said she loves unisex clothing and likes to wear men and women's clothes equally. It also embraced sustainability years before the pandemic challenged most fashion lines' bottom line.</p><p>And she told Business Insider that she got her start just like any other entrepreneur.</p><h2>Internships and climbing the ranks</h2><p>After holding internships at Vogue and Louis Vuitton, Ducreut worked as a stylist's apprentice at the Istituto Marangoni in Paris, and graduated from the prestigious Parsons School of Design in New York in 2017, with a degree in fashion.</p><p>From the start, Alter only used natural fibers such as pesticide-free silk and cotton in its clothing. The brand especially employs a lot of upcycling, meaning she reuses old fashion products so she doesn't have to produce much herself. She buys dead stalks of leather and denim and reuses them, so much of her inventory was never going to go to waste this year — everything was always going to be reused.</p><div type="image" title="Pauline Ducruet" height="4146" width="5528" msid="79267142" hostid="261"></div><p>Alter sells products such as <a href="https://alter-designs.com/produit/apron/">$292 denim skirts</a> and <a href="https://alter-designs.com/produit/draped-tunic/">$759 satin draped tunics</a>. Her first collection was presented in Paris in 2019.</p><p>Right now, Alter Designs is direct-to-consumer and eCommerce only, but the brand does do pop-up shops — an important part of her strategy in terms of connecting and growing her consumer base. Ducruet declined to disclose the finances for her business, citing the pandemic. "Doing it all by myself, for now, it's a really hard rhythm to keep up," she said. "I wanted to slow down a little bit."</p><p>The brand would have been celebrating the one-year anniversary of its first collection this past June, but the pandemic didn't just interrupt that — it forced the whole company to move. </p><h2><strong>Less than a year after opening her business, the pandemic almost ended it for good</strong></h2><p>Ducruet is usually based in New York, but she left the US in February to return to Monaco, just a few weeks before the EU <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/eu-opens-up-to-some-travelers-but-not-americans-11593524652">shut its borders</a> for non-essential travel due to the pandemic.</p><p>Once she landed back in Monaco, Ducruet realized it might be years before she would be able to successfully bring her business back to the US, so she decided to move the entire production of her fashion line to France, which posed certain challenges. "Monaco is such a tiny country," she said. "We don't have factories here."</p><div type="image" title="Pauline Ducruet" height="3000" width="3999" msid="79267146" hostid="261"></div><p>This meant she had to, once again, find suppliers and factories that could house her collections. All when <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-italy-coronavirus-lockdown-is-impacting-luxury-industry-2020-3">factories were already shutting down</a> worldwide and when the fashion and <keyword id="6354851" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="retail">retail</keyword> industries were taking huge hits from the pandemic.</p><p>In February, Boston Consulting Group and Bernstein <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-italy-coronavirus-lockdown-is-impacting-luxury-industry-2020-3">estimated that the luxury sector</a> could lose nearly $45 billion in sales in 2020. </p><p>"It was basically starting from scratch and it was challenging," Ducruet said. "Especially as a young brand, you put all your effort into the people that do your pattern-making and sewing and everything."</p><p>The result? She adjusted the amount of clothing she produced and decided to sit out of Paris Fashion Week as she figured out the next steps for her brand. "I've decided that I'm only going to do one collection a year. There's not going to be seasons now. It's just going to be a collection per year." </p><p>This will help the brand become even more sustainable, as it will cut down on excessive waste and on any extra inventory, especially as she continues adjusting her operations to keep her brand afloat during the pandemic.</p><h2>How to deal with a spotlight from a famous family? Emphasizing brand values</h2><p>Ducruet acknowledged that she has clearly benefited from the fact that her mother is a princess, and she is a member of a royal family. </p><p>"People were following the family for years and years and years," she said. "I feel like I'm a real millennial," she says. Their clientele is well-traveled and educated. Once you've traveled to every island hotspot and stayed in private villas, it takes something extra to get a "wow" from clients.</span></p><p><span>In recent years, according to Amber Treshnell, John Paul's CEO of Americas, the company has helped fly in a client's favorite lasagna from Venice for a Christmas Eve celebration, arranged a visit with Santa in the Arctic Circle for a client's children, and help craft a wedding proposal dinner in Dubai at At.mosphere, the tallest restaurant in the world.</span></p><p><span>"We are constantly challenged with finding things that are not searchable on the internet. These are people who have traveled the world, been to many exciting destinations, and they want the next best thing,"  a concierge at John Paul for last 11 years told Business Insider.</span></p><p><span>"No is not an option. So long as it is legal and ethical, we can do it."</span></p><p><span>The concierge, who John Paul asked to keep his name confidential out of respect for his privacy, helped work on possibly the most extravagant request the company has ever fulfilled, which came during the Monaco Grand Prix, considered one of the most prestigious Formula One races in the world.</span></p><p><span>The client wanted to attend the Grand Prix, but was not satisfied with viewing it from the perfect balcony, according to the concierge. He wanted "something nobody else can get."</span></p><p><span>The concierge helped arrange for the client to watch the race from an ultra-luxury yacht. Not only that, but the concierges were able to get the client an audience with Prince Albert II of Monaco. </span></p><p><span>"Our client was over the moon when we presented this idea. He could never have done that himself. If his connections come up empty, he will contact concierges at other John Paul offices so they can tap into their networks.</span></p><p><span>Once they have a connection that can make the experience happen, the team puts everything through several layers of vetting. With millionaire and billionaire clients, there is always the risk that someone is trying to steal clients' money. John Paul prides itself on its vetting abilities.</span></p><p><span>"We don't want to put our clients in danger because they are coming to us as the authority on providing them with access that is unquestionably honest and straightforward," he said. <p>29-year-old Andrea, <span>grandson of the late actress <keyword id="28543" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Grace-Kelly">Grace Kelly</keyword>,</span> is second in line to the Monegasque throne after his uncle Prince Albert II. His 29-year-old bride-to-be Tatiana is a descendant of the wealthy <span>Colombian </span>Santo Domingo family.</p>
<p>According to a spokesperson for Monaco's Pink Palace, the wedding will be a private affair, but it's also bound to be ritzy. <a href="http://nymag.com/thecut/2013/08/royal-wedding-fashion-billionaires-edition.html">New York Magazine points out</a> that in 2008, Tatiana's relative Andrés married Lauren Santo Domingo and Vogue deemed it "the wedding of the year."</p>
<p>The couple have dated for seven years and have a son, Sacha, who was born back in March.</p>
<p>They were introduced by Andrea's royal sister Charlotte, herself a fashion icon and third in line to the Monaco throne. She is a good friend of Tatiana, and the two were schoolmates at Paris's elite boarding school Lycée Fontainebleau as children, according to People.</p>
<p>Andrea and Tatiana are frequently seen out together at social events in Monaco, including the Rose Ball, Red Cross Ball, and Monaco Grand Prix. She was also his date to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-other-royal-wedding-charlene-wittstock-and-prince-albert-of-monaco-2011-6">Prince Albert and Charlene Wittstock's</a> wedding in 2011.</p>

Dana Rohrabacher (R-Calif.) said in an interview aired Thursday that he arm-wrestled Russian President Vladimir Putin in the early 1990s - and he lost his challenge.</span></p>
<p>Rohrabacher <a href="http://www.scpr.org/programs/offramp/2013/09/12/33692/congressman-dana-rohrabacher-i-arm-wrestled-vladim/" target="_blank">told California radio station KPCC</a> that he met with a "group of young political leaders" soon after the fall of the Soviet Union. <span>Rohrabacher, who was first elected to the House in 1989, invited Putin, then the deputy mayor of St. Petersburg, and the other politicians to play a game of touch football.</span></p>
<p><span>Putin accepted, along with two others. And afterward, they ended up at a bar:</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">"So we went out and played touch football. And Scooter Libby was one of the players, and a bunch of my right-wing friends were there. And so we all went over to this pub afterwards, the Irish Times pub. [...]</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">"We were having a little bit too much to drink, I guess. But anyway, we started arguing about who won the Cold War, et cetera. And so we decided to settle it like men do when they've had too much to drink in the pub. And so we got down to these arm-wrestling matches. And I ended up being paired off with Putin. And he's a little guy. But boy, I'll tell you, he put me down in a millisecond. He is tough. He's just, bing! His muscles are just unbelievable."</p>
<p>Rohrabacher went on to say that Putin is indeed a "tough guy," but that's no reason the U.S. shouldn't try to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/vladimir-putin-nyt-op-ed-obama-syria-assad-2013-9" target="_blank">work with him to find a diplomatic solution on Syria</a>. </p>

<p>McKinsey &amp; Company director Martin Stuchtey subtracted politics from the equation and laid out numbers showing that a ban on high seas fishing would cost $2 per person on the planet, while returning $4 per person.</p>
<p>"You would need to spend the two dollars to get the four dollars; that is much better than anything the bank offers you right now," Stuchtey told AFP after an on-stage chat at a World Ocean Summit organized by The Economist weekly newspaper.</p>
<p>A handful of nations spend lots of money subsidizing fleets that must range farther and farther at sea for fish as stocks are depleted. The bulk of their catch goes to developed nations.</p>
<p>Ending subsidies and the practice would result in huge financial savings, as well as let sea life rebound and regenerate areas designated by the United Nations as exclusive economic zones in which countries have rights to resources, according to Stuchtey.</p>
<p>Stuchtey's figures, which he promised to publish soon, backed calls declaring all the world's open ocean protected marine areas complete with enforcement to stop illegal fishing.</p>
<p>Hard numbers reveal that today's fishing industry is not profitable and as fleets work harder chasing fewer fish, the losses grow and stocks are further depleted in "a race to the bottom," the economist explained.</p>
<p>"The case of the ocean stands upon good old-fashioned economics," Stuchtey said.</p>
<p>"It is often hidden behind complex relationships, short-term interests and entrenched behaviors."</p>
<p>Summit participants pointed to the need to translate the destruction of seas and marine life into economic values that everyone, from world leaders to fishermen, can take to heart.</p>
<p>Factoring the value of "natural capital" off coasts into the wealth of countries promises to change the way nations manage such assets and to turn some countries from aid cases into investment opportunities, said World Bank vice president and special envoy for climate change Rachel Kyte.</p>
<p>"We will have to use economic modeling that counts in natural resources and the cost of policy measures," she added.</p>
<p>"We are just starting to do that."</p>
<p>US Secretary of State John Kerry and Prince Albert II of Monaco were among summit speakers calling for meaningful action to save the ocean on which life depends.</p>
<p>They pointed to the need for sustainability when it comes to fisheries and other sea resources, and for nations to work together on the issues.</p>
<p>Among the threats to these resources are illegal fishing practices smashing food chains and wiping out species, pollution, including fertilizer run-off from inland farms, and climate change.</p>
