The outreach is part of announcements made during the Union Budget 2024-25, which aim to maximize the net of beneficiaries under the Employment Linked Incentive (ELI) Scheme. The central government has already directed concerned ministries and departments to ensure that payment of all subsidies and incentives under all welfare schemes occurs via the Aadhar Payment Bridge and that 100% biometric Aadhar authentication is achieved. These will be based on enrollment in the EPFO and focus on recognition of first-time employees and support to employees and employers. The ELI Scheme aims to create over 2 crore jobs in the country in 2 years. This will significantly contribute to increasing employment opportunities and enhancing livelihoods. UAN activation provides employees with seamless access to EPFO's comprehensive online services, enabling them to efficiently manage their Provident Fund (PF) accounts, view and download PF passbooks, submit online claims for withdrawals, advances, or transfers, update personal details, and track claims in real-time. This allows employees 24/7 access to EPFO services from the comfort of their homes, eliminating the need for physical visits to EPFO offices. For the uninitiated, UAN is a 12-digit number allotted to each member of EPFO (Employee Provident Fund Organization). Think of UAN as a single-point number that brings together multiple member IDs that have been allocated to a particular employee. London: Universities and student groups on Tuesday urgently lobbied British Prime Minister <keyword id="19906889" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rishi-Sunak" source="keywords">Rishi Sunak</keyword> to safeguard the country's <keyword id="21659184" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="post-study-visa" source="keywords">post-study visa</keyword> offer, which has been dominated by Indians to gain work experience for around two years at the end of their university degree. Amid reports that Sunak is considering either restricting or ending the <keyword id="20616105" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Graduate-Route" source="keywords">Graduate Route</keyword> to curtail soaring migration statistics ahead of a general election, a group of nearly 30 university vice-chancellors and the <keyword id="21760521" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="national-indian-students-and-alumni-association" source="keywords">National Indian Students and Alumni Association</keyword> (NISAU) UK have issued detailed letters of appeal to 10 Downing Street. They list a series of factors in favour of keeping the Graduate visa scheme unchanged, including the benefits that international students bring to the UK economy in a competitive global higher education marketplace. "Modelling by consultancy London Economics shows that a single cohort has a net economic benefit of GBP 37 billion to the UK economy; as well as through the soft power that Britain's international graduates generate for the country over time, including through furthering ties of trade and diplomacy," reads the NISAU UK letter addressed to Sunak. "Indeed, 70 per cent of <keyword id="19971660" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-students" source="keywords">Indian students</keyword> have told us that the ability to gain meaningful work experience is a critical element in their decision to choose between competing international destinations, of which the UK is one... the Graduate Route allows the opportunity to gain this work experience for a temporary period. It is non-extendable and does not count towards permanent settlement. This means that neither students nor Graduate visa holders should be considered 'immigrants' in the context of the long-term picture of migration," it notes. Their appeal comes a week after the influential <keyword id="20609895" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Migration-Advisory-Committee" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Migration Advisory Committee" meta.hostid="83" meta.entityid="Migration Advisory Committee">Migration Advisory Committee</keyword> (MAC) advised the government to let the scheme continue as it found no abuse of this post-study work offer. It also confirmed that Indians topped its tally, accounting for 89,200 visas between 2021 and 2023, or 42 per cent of the overall grants, and were likely to be "most affected by any restriction on the Graduate Route". In their letter to Sunak, universities in the north of England — from Sunderland to Sheffield, Leeds to Lancaster, Liverpool to Teesside, Bradford to Huddersfield, and York to Newcastle — said they will all be harmed by the removal or reduction of this visa as it is an "intrinsic part of the educational offer that has made the UK so attractive to brilliant students from all around the world". "The Graduate Visa Route is regarded by students in key markets like India as an integral part of their educational experience. The MAC review made clear that the removal of this route would make the UK less attractive and thus would cause considerable financial detriment to universities around the country," reads their joint letter. "International student tuition fee income has long cross-subsidised underfunded research and has increasingly become critical to cross-subsidise the teaching of UK undergraduate students because of the frozen tuition fee. Universities cannot continue to absorb the costs of teaching UK undergraduates without some form of alternative funding source," they caution. On top of their visa fees, international students who find work and start businesses contribute billions of pounds in income tax, national insurance and VAT annually. The university chiefs point out that they are also usually net contributors to the National Health Service (NHS) through the NHS surcharge. The Russell Group of the UK's leading universities issued its appeal over the weekend, with CEO Tim Bradshaw warning that there has already been a 10 per cent decline in international applications for post-graduate courses starting this September in the wake of the clampdown on students being able to bring dependant family members. "A further restriction on international students would not only be unnecessary — as numbers are already falling — but also damaging, resulting in less spending in local communities, fewer opportunities for domestic students and less UK research," he noted in a letter to Sunak. Members of his own Cabinet are believed to be opposed to any changes to the Graduate scheme, but the British Prime Minister is having to balance pressures from the right of the governing Conservatives who are single-minded in their demands to curb all forms of legal as well as illegal migration levels ahead of an election later this year.

Universities, student groups lobby PM Sunak to keep UK's post-study visa scheme unchanged

New Delhi, Prime Minister <keyword id="19962578" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shri-narendra-modi" source="keywords">Shri Narendra Modi</keyword> will lay the foundation stone, inaugurate and dedicate to the nation around 2,000 railway infrastructure projects worth more than Rs 41,000 crore on Monday. The event will be held at 12:30 p.m. via video conferencing. In a post on X, <keyword id="19899320" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pm-modi" source="keywords">PM Modi</keyword> said, "Today is a historic day for our Railways! At 12:30 PM, 2000 railway infrastructure projects worth over Rs. 41,000 crores will be dedicated to the nation. "In order to enhance the travel experience, 553 stations will be redeveloped under the <keyword id="20270535" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="amrit-bharat-station-scheme" source="keywords">Amrit Bharat Station Scheme</keyword>. The foundation stones for these stations would be laid. Overbridges and underpasses across India will also be inaugurated. "These works will further 'Ease of Living' for the people." In a major step to provide world class amenities at railway stations, the Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone for redevelopment of 553 railway stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. These stations, spread across 27 states and Union Territories, will be redeveloped at a cost of over Rs 19,000 crore. These stations will act as 'City Centres' integrating both sides of the city. They will have modern passenger amenities like roof plaza, beautiful landscaping, inter modal connectivity, improved modern facade, kids play area, kiosks, food courts, etc. They will be redeveloped as environment friendly and also <keyword id="20109552" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="divyang" source="keywords">Divyang</keyword> friendly. The design of these station buildings will be inspired by local culture, heritage and architecture. Further, the Prime Minister will inaugurate <keyword id="20727159" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gomti-nagar" source="keywords">Gomti Nagar</keyword> station in Uttar Pradesh which has been redeveloped at a total cost of around Rs 385 crore. To cater to the increased future passenger footfall, this station has segregated arrival and departure facilities. It integrates both sides of the city. This centrally air-conditioned station has modern passenger amenities like Air Concourse, congestion free circulation, food courts and ample parking space in upper and lower basement. The Prime Minister will also lay the foundation stone, inaugurate and dedicate to the nation 1500 Road Over Bridges and Underpasses. These Road Over Bridges and Underpasses spread across 24 states and Union Territories, the total cost of these projects is around Rs 21,520 crore. These projects will reduce congestion, enhance safety and connectivity, improve capacity, and efficiency of rail travel.

Union Minister for Communications, Electronics and IT, <keyword id="7796574" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ashwini-Vaishnaw" source="Orion">Ashwini Vaishnaw</keyword>, announced a significant milestone in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>'s IT hardware sector, stating that 27 companies have received approval under the <keyword id="8940266" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="production-linked-incentive-scheme" source="Orion">Production Linked Incentive Scheme</keyword> (<keyword id="53367" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="pli" source="Orion">PLI</keyword>) within a short timeframe. Vaishnaw said, "As you're aware, a few months back, PM Modi approved the Production Linked Incentive Scheme (PLI) scheme for IT hardware. And within the very short time frame, I'm very happy to announce that 27 companies have been approved for the PLI." During a press conference, Vaishnaw highlighted that nearly 95 per cent of these approved companies, totalling 23, are ready to commence immediate manufacturing. <keyword id="14377000" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="vaishaw" source="Orion">Vaishaw</keyword> said, "The best part is almost 95 per cent of these, the exact number is 23 out of these are ready to start their manufacturing on day 0. And about 4 companies will start their manufacturing within 90 days". Minister added, "These 27 applications will lead to about investment of Rs 3 thousand crores additional production amount Rs 3 lacs 50 thousand crores and direct employment of about Rs 50 thousand and indirect employment about a lac and 50 thousand. So total employment about 2 lac will be created. The value chain is shifting to India". The remaining four companies are expected to initiate manufacturing within the next 90 days. The approved applications are projected to result in an additional investment of Rs 3,000 crores, with an overall production value of Rs 3.5 lakh crores. The direct employment generated is estimated at around 50,000, while indirect employment opportunities will reach approximately 1.5 lakh, contributing to a total employment boost of 2 lakh. Vaishnaw mentioned 27 companies that have received the PLI approval include Dell, Foxconn, HP, Flextronics, Padget, Lenovo, New Link, Zenus, Mega and <keyword id="545507" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="optimus" source="Orion">Optimus</keyword>, signalling a significant shift in the value chain toward India. The PLI Scheme for IT Hardware, introduced by Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="narendra-modi" source="Orion">Narendra Modi</keyword> and notified on May 29, 2023, with a budgetary outlay of Rs 17,000 crores, aims to enhance the IT hardware manufacturing ecosystem in the country. The scheme is anticipated to stimulate local manufacturing, encouraging the localization of components and sub-assemblies and fostering the development of a robust supply chain within India. Ashwini Vaishnaw previously reported an outstanding response to the PLI scheme for laptops and PCs, with 32 applications received, including major players like HP India, Dell, Acer, Lenovo, and Thomson. The scheme is poised to bring expected incremental production of Rs 3,35,000 crores, an incremental investment of Rs 2,430 crores, and an anticipated direct employment boost of 75,000. The PLI schemes, a part of India's Atmanirbhar and 'Make-in-India' initiatives, aim to enhance global competitiveness, attract investments, boost exports, integrate India into the global supply chain, and reduce dependency on imports across various sectors.  The <keyword id="1062277" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Scholarship-Programme-for-Diaspora-Children">Scholarship Programme for Diaspora Children</keyword> (SPDC) was rolled out by the Ministry of External Affairs(MEA) for the Indian-origin students for admissions to premier Indian institutions including National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Schools of Planning and Architecture (SPAs), and Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs). According to the programme, the scholarship is extended to students from up to 66 countries — including the US and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The scheme will benefit students with nearly 75% financial assistance on the total cost of the academic course — which accounts for <a href="https://www.mea.gov.in/spdc.htm">$4000 (₹277,002) worth of scholarship</a> every year. The applicants can enroll for the scholarship scheme via the e-governance mechanism spdcindia.gov.in. This includes courses in engineering, technology, management, journalism, animal husbandry, liberal arts, and commerce among others. Introduced in 2006-07, the programme is aimed at making higher education in Indian Universities available to the children of overseas Indians and Non- resident Indian students (NRIs). Since its inception, the Indian government has awarded over 800 scholarships to students, according to Ministry of External Affairs.
