The new requirements are aimed at increasing transparency and accountability and preventing election interference, Rob Goldman, Facebook's vice president of ads, and Alex Himel, its vice president of local and Pages, said in a blog post on the company's site. "We know we were slow to pick-up foreign interference in the 2016 US elections," Goldman and Himel wrote. "By increasing transparency around ads and Pages on Facebook, we can increase accountability for advertisers - improving our service for everyone."The company will require authorization for issue-based ads, such as ads around current political topics and debates. Advertisers will need to confirm their identities and location in order to get authorized. Facebook will ban those that don't clear the process from running political ads on either its social network or on Instagram.Each message from an approved advertiser will be labeled as a "Political Ad" and will show who paid for it. Anyone who manages a Facebook Page with a substantial number of followers will need to be verified as well. Page owners who do not clear the process will no longer be able to publish posts on them.The new requirement is intended to clamp down on users with fake accounts running Facebook Pages. Going forward, visitors to Pages will be able to see more information about them, such as name changes they've undergone.The changes are intended to prevent future abuse of Facebook's sites during elections, Goldman and Himel said in their post. They're also designed to give users all the information they need to assess the trustworthiness of both ads and Pages.The move to authorize issue-based ads comes on top of the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/like-twitter-facebook-will-require-full-transparency-for-political-advertisers-and-other-businesses-too-2017-10">changes Facebook rolled out in October</a>. It announced then that advertisers running federal election-related ads in the US would be required to verify their identities and include disclosures with their ads. Facebook said it was working with third parties to develop a list of key issues, which it would refine over time. <h2 style="font-weight: 400;">The new requirements follow a series of changes by Facebook to get control of ads and Pages</h2>And the company has been taking other steps to prevent abuse of its services. It built a feature called "View Ads" that lets users see all the ads a Facebook Page is running, even ones that may not have been targeted at them. Facebook is testing the feature Canada and plans to launch it globally this summer. The company also is planning to release in June a searchable archive of all past political ads which would show not just their images and text, but also the amount that was spent on them and the demographic audience information that was used to target them at Facebook users. With the US midterm elections coming in November and elections in India, Brazil, Mexico, Pakistan, Hungary, and other countries slated for this year also, preventing election interference is a huge focus for Facebook right now, company CEO <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/mark-zuckerberg-april-2018-conference-call-on-facebook-privacy-full-transcript-2018-4">Mark Zuckerberg said recently</a>.Indeed, it's one of his top priorities for 2018, and Facebook will hire more people to assist with the effort, Zuckerberg reiterated in a post on his Facebook account. He also voiced his support for the Honest Ads Act, a proposed law that would apply similar disclosure requirements for political ads that are placed on online services that are already mandated for those that run on television or in print. With entrepreneurs facing such high rates of potential failure, it's important for company founders to know what mistakes to avoid. Business Insider polled a wide range of small business owners and entrepreneurs across diverse industries to learn about the biggest faux pas they've made on the job. Here are their tips for how others can steer clear of their errors to boost their own business' chances for longevity.<h1>1. Being too thrifty to invest in growing your business</h1><a href="http://www.faithmariah.com">Faith Mariah</a>, founder of the blog <a href="https://www.radicaltransformationproject.com/start-here/">Radical Transformation Project</a> - a mental health blog that generates money from affiliate marketing, course sales, and advertising - revealed that her biggest mistake when building her business was being "way too cheap." <img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5e543df7fee23d6587651897-2400/faith.jpg" alt="Faith Mariah, founder of the blog Radical Transformation Project" />Faith MariahFaith Mariah."I wasted months of my time trying to teach myself how to do everything by using Google every time I had a question," Mariah said. "On top of that, I was too cheap to hire out the tasks that I wasn't good at." Mariah said that her business started to grow once she invested in the right mentors and started contracting out small tasks that she either wasn't good at or gobbled up too much of her time. Kathleen Lucente, CEO and founder of PR agency <a href="https://www.redfancommunications.com/">Red Fan Communications</a>, said that one of the most important lessons she learned after starting her business was to "separate church and state" to avoid the mistake of doing too much admin directly with her clients. "I love to get in the trenches with clients, but oftentimes administrative work like sending out invoices gets in the way," Lucente said. "Setting up this infrastructure as much as possible by hiring an accountant or a lawyer will help free up time to do great work." <img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5e543e4bfee23d6b0d026ab7-2400/kathleen lucente-0018.jpg" alt="Kathleen Lucente, CEO and founder of PR agency Red Fan Communications" />Kathleen LucenteKathleen Lucente.When Lucente was doing this administrative work on her own, the result was that she would be up until 11 p.m. getting financials out."That wasn't sustainable and not my skill set," said Lucente, who noted that this approach was needed as the business scaled, but as soon as she felt that her financials were strong enough to add a CFO, she did. Also, because the demand on her calendar is intense and she receives upwards of 150 emails a day, she also hired an administrative assistant. "If I'm swamped with [admin details], I'm not getting to the senior consulting work that my clients value," Lucente said. "Having an incredible assistant is essential and someone that I can truly trust."As a result of investing in her business with these new hires, Lucente reported that her PR firm managed to change their receivables from over 45 days to just 10 days."I'm focused on working [as] CEO versus chasing down invoices," said Lucente. "I am able to take on the meetings that make the most sense, as my assistant is screening for the right fit and making recommendations for people who might be better off with a different service. I have the best force field around me, and as a result, my clients get the best of me and I can do what I'm best at! Also, my staff gets my time and mentorship."Similarly, Chris Facey, owner of third-party freight shipping company <a href="https://www.freightsavvy.com/">Freightsavvy.com</a>, once went way outside of his skill set to personally pick up and deliver a shipment for a client. <img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5e543e8bfee23d66455b5e56-2000/chris facey profile photodsc6752.jpg" alt="Chris Facey, owner of third-party freight shipping company Freightsavvy.com" />Chris Facey.Chris Facey"While the customer loved the effort, it was extremely foolish and highly illegal (as the DOT officer who pulled me over informed me)," Facey said.Rather than getting discouraged about the debacle, Facey said the experience taught him to view everything as a learning opportunity. "Despite the potential disasters (safety, fine/jail time, missed deadline), I took away so much from this nightmare," he said. "I viewed it as a learning experience and I grew from it, so it was a net positive."Facey advised small business owners and entrepreneurs to be mindful and value their zone of expertise. "Be resourceful and find your thing, then lather, rinse, and repeat over and over!" he shared.<h1>2. Failing to market to your target audience and keep up with changing times </h1>Mark Aselstine, founder of <a href="https://www.uncorkedventures.com">Uncorked Ventures</a>, which specializes in wine clubs and gift baskets, admitted that his biggest mistake was the largest check he has ever written. "We signed a national radio deal to create branded wine clubs for a series of conservative talk radio hosts," said Aselstine. "Honestly, we didn't feel great about it ... but figured that business was business."After a few months of the radio ads running and having basically nothing to show for it, Aselstine and his team made a realization: Wine isn't sold over the radio for a reason. "It doesn't really work," the founder said. "Tasting notes and talking wine can be boring enough in writing, let alone via spoken word."Aselstine said that the "sad thing" was that the company would have likely gotten "at least 100 times as many customers" from that same expenditure on Google Ads. With this lesson under his belt, he advised other small business owners to have a good understanding of what new marketing methods could work for their business, and to make sure that their selection is sensible. Mitch Goldstone, CEO of <a href="https://www.scanmyphotos.com">ScanMyPhotos.com</a>, noted that his biggest mistake as an entrepreneur was falling behind with technology. He explained that his business began by providing DVD data discs to store archive photos. Believing that someone else has all of the answers</h1>Brittany Hovsepian, cofounder and owner of real estate investment company <a href="http://www.theexperthomebuyers.com">The Expert Home Buyers</a>, shared that early on after starting her company, she and her cofounder (her husband Nathaniel) fell into the classic guru trap. They heard about a company leader's program about motivated sellers on a podcast and signed up.For the first few weeks, the cofounders were happy and excited to be embarking on their new adventure, but quickly realized that they were just a number in the program's system. "We knew after three months that what we were doing [with them] wasn't working, and that these people didn't know about our specific market and the needs that the sellers out here had." That is when Hovsepian realized that the person she had entrusted as a "guru" truly didn't have all the answers, and that she and her cofounder would need to trust themselves to test the market and figure out what worked in their area. Since leaving that program, Hovsepian and her cofounder have taken over marketing for themselves and have closed three deals, with two more in the pipeline. They are also continuing to work 20 solid leads and hope to turn a couple into deals in the coming months."There is no 'get rich quick' scheme," she said. Green was referencing the European Communities Act (1972) and European Union Act (2011).He argued that the former piece of legislation, which saw the UK concede some of its legislative power to the EU, was an example of Parliament conferring powers which "only parliament" could exercise and confer.This means that triggering Article 50 without first passing an Act of Parliament would be May's government overturning a parliamentary decision without consulting parliament itself, he added."There can be no scope for government with a stroke of a pen claiming the power to take away treaties... remove domestic rights and reverse parliament's conferral power without parliamentary approval," he said.Helen Mountfield QC, <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/brexit-justice-european-union-boris-johnson-2016-9">representing crowdfunded claim People's Challenge</a>, told the court that triggering Article 50 without parliamentary approval would be contrary to the Scotland Act, which protects Scottish domestic law from alteration without a proper parliamentary process."The crown does not have the right to impose or removing rights as a matter of domestic law," she said.The court room was packed to watch the second day of the historic case unfold. If the judges rule in the claimants' favour, not only would it have a clear impact on how and when Britain leaves the 28-nation bloc, but would totally reshape the country's constitutional landscape.The government's position was defended by Attorney General Jeremy Wright QC. Wright argued that MPs were told the government intended to use royal prerogative to trigger Article 50 in the result of a Brexit vote and said the referendum legislation did not state that further legislation would be necessary to put the result into effect."As a matter of general principle, withdrawal from a treaty is a matter for the Crown... This is totally within the expectation of Parliament... Royal prerogative has not been eroded," he said.The Attorney General accused the claimants of politicising the legal debate by wanting MPs to be "asked the same question" that was put to the public on June 23.The case got underway on Thursday and will conclude on Tuesday, with a verdict expected in mid-November. The claimants are expected to launch an appeal to the Supreme Court if the judges rule against them.The case is being heard against a backdrop of heated debate between Remainers who want Brexit to be subjected to tough parliamentary scrutiny and Brexiteers who accuse Remainers of attempting to subvert the will of the British people.Some who have attended the case have been verbally abused upon entering the court. But I come not to bury Microsoft, but to praise it.There's an old writer's adage: "Kill your darlings," meaning that nothing of your work is ever too precious to get rid of in the name of making a stronger work. Author Stephen King once went a step further and wrote in his memoir to "kill your darlings, kill your darlings, even when it breaks your egocentric little scribbler's heart, kill your darlings." Well, Microsoft is certainly killing its darling Windows business. But it's all in the name of a greater good: Building more stuff that people find useful, without forcing users to only run around in Microsoft's playground.A prime example arrived today when <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-send-iphone-app-wants-to-kill-email-subject-lines-2015-7">Microsoft announced that Send, an email tool that looks more like a instant messaging app</a>, is coming first to iPhone and later to Windows Phone. "Oh, another useful Microsoft app for iPhone," we seem to say every time. "Just throw it on the pile." From Microsoft's perspective, this is exactly where they want to be.The idea, for Microsoft, is simple: Getting people to use even the free Microsoft services (SkyDrive cloud storage, the free versions of Office apps for iPhone, et cetera) is a gateway towards the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-subscription-revenue-shift-2015-7">paid, premium, subscription-based ones</a> - Xbox Live for gaming, Office 365 for productivity, the <keyword id="6356323" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Enterprise">Enterprise</keyword> Mobility Suite for business. The role of Windows 10 in this new mission is subtle. Maybe too subtle.Windows 10 is designed to integrate with all of those services. Out of the box, Windows 10 has Xbox and Groove apps, for starters. On the business side, the Enterprise Mobility Suite subscription service adds some extra manageability features.It's supposed to encourage you to buy all the way in to the Microsoft ecosystem. Windows 10 is a funnel, guiding you towards signing up for these new subscriptions and buying all these apps.Giving everybody in the world a free upgrade to Windows 10 for the next year is a small price to pay to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/windows-10-support-lifecycle-is-a-mystery-2015-7">get everybody on the platform</a> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-cloud-arr-and-recurring-revenue-is-growing-2015-7">forking over cash to Microsoft on a monthly basis</a>. Along those same lines, Microsoft is betting big on the new, improved Windows Store for Windows 10.Buy an app once, Microsoft promises, and it'll work on all your Windows 10 devices, from PC to smartphone and soon HoloLens. Even the Xbox One console will be getting Windows 10 and all its apps later this year. They call this idea "universal apps." This, in turn, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-ceo-satya-nadella-windows-phone-universal-apps-2015-7">might encourage you to buy a Surface or a Windows Phone</a> in the first place. But since so many apps for Windows are also going to be on iOS and Android, including Microsoft's own apps, maybe not.Ultimately, it doesn't really matter to this new Microsoft if you do or don't use Windows. The company thinks it can monetize you anyway.Windows 10 is angling towards having a billion active users within the next few years, a goal it will probably hit. If nothing else, computer manufacturers are going to be preloading it on their new PCs. From my own experiences with the early testing versions, Windows 10 is very cool and user-friendly, and this is coming from an Apple guy. But what Windows 10 really is, is a place for Microsoft to build its next few billion-dollar businesses - businesses that don't rely on your even owning a PC at all. It's the death of Windows as we know it, but the birth of a Microsoft that knows it's not the center of the universe: <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-enterprise-mobility-suite-growth-2015-7">The user is</a>.
