India has exported more than 45,000 tonnes of <keyword id="50894" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="onion" source="Orion">onion</keyword> since the ban on outbound shipments was lifted early this month, a top government official said on Wednesday. These exports provided relief to farmers after curbs were imposed to keep domestic supplies steady ahead of general elections. The world's biggest vegetable exporter banned exports of the bulb last December and then extended it in March, after a rise in prices triggered by sluggish production. "Since the ban was lifted, more than 45,000 tonnes of onions have been exported, mostly to the Middle East and Bangladesh," Nidhi Khare, Secretary of the Consumer Affairs Ministry, told PTI. To keep <keyword id="20035406" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="onion-prices" source="keywords">onion prices</keyword> affordable during the election period, the government on May 4 lifted the ban but imposed a minimum export price (MEP) of USD 550 per tonne. Khare said the forecast of a good monsoon this year will ensure better sowing of kharif (summer) crops, including onion from June onwards. State-owned agencies have started procuring onions from the recent rabi (winter) harvest to build a targeted 5,00,000-tonne buffer stock for the current year, she added. The country's onion production is expected to fall 16 per cent from a year earlier to 25.47 million tonnes in the 2023-24 crop year due to lower output in key growing regions like Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, according to the Agriculture Ministry's first estimates.

Americans are turning to gardening, hunting, and extreme couponing to combat rising food prices 

New Delhi, <keyword id="19955404" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="finance" source="keywords">Finance</keyword> Minister Nirmala <keyword id="19916494" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sitharaman" source="keywords">Sitharaman</keyword> on Tuesday said the inflation has come down within the tolerance band as a result of the steps taken by the government to check price rise, especially in perishable commodities. Replying to a question in the <keyword id="19895369" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rajya-sabha" source="keywords">Rajya Sabha</keyword>, Sitharaman said Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) is working with the government on de-humidification of onions through Gamma Rays to give it a longer shelf life. "The government is seized of the difficulties, which arise due to shortage of perishable goods, which are not grown in <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword>. The committee sits and reviews periodically, and the efforts have shown on the ground that inflation is now within the tolerable band," she said. India's retail inflation has declined from an average of 6.8 per cent in April-December 2022 to 5.5 per cent in the corresponding period of 2023. The retail inflation is now stable and within the notified tolerance band of 2 per cent to 6 per cent. The minister said that in order to check the volatility in prices of onion, the government has progressively increased its buffer size from 1 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) in 2020-21 to 7 LMT in 2023-24. As of February 3, 2024, a total of 6.32 LMT of onion was procured, and 3.96 LMT of Grade-A onion was released through retail sales, e-Nam auction and bulk sales. "Currently, steps are being taken so that the preservation of very highly perishable commodities, like onion, can be improved," she said, adding lots of steps have been taken by the government, particularly for meeting the shortage in supply of perishable goods. Sitharaman said India has imported 8.79 lakh metric tonnes of <keyword id="20059821" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tur-dal" source="keywords">Tur Dal</keyword> and 15.14 lakh metric tonnes of Masoor Dal in calendar year 2023. Similarly, the country imported other dals and released them in the market. India has also brought the branded 'Bharat Dal' through which Chana Dal is made available at Rs 60/kg for one kg pack and Rs 55/kg for 30 kg packs. 2.97 lakh metric tonnes of Chana have been sold already as of January 30, 2024. 'Bharat Dal', which is coming at a concessional price, is available in all retail markets. "Since we don't grow enough pulses in the country and due to a shortfall in supply, prices of pulses normally keep fluctuating, for which, by analysing the crop estimates, we start tying up for imports," Sitharaman added. Retail inflation, based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI), in December 2023, stood at 5.69 per cent.

According to <keyword id="20489875" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="crisil-market-intelligence-and-analytics" source="keywords">Crisil Market Intelligence and Analytics</keyword> (MI&amp;A) Research '<keyword id="20489770" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rice-roti-rate" source="keywords">Rice Roti Rate</keyword>' estimates, the rise in prices of ingredients like pulses, rice, onion and tomato made home-cooked veg thali costlier in January, while decline in poultry rates helped in the fall in non-veg thali rates. The cost of the veg thali increased due to a surge of 35 per cent and 20 per cent year-on-year in prices of onion and tomato, respectively, said the report. Prices of rice (accounting for 12 per cent of the <keyword id="18314113" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="veg-thali-cost" source="Orion">veg thali cost</keyword>) and pulses (9 per cent) also increased by 14 per cent and 21 per cent y-o-y, respectively, it added. Meanwhile, the decline in the cost of the non-veg thali was due to a 26 per cent fall in broiler prices in January, compared to the same month last year, amid higher production, the report stated. However, sequentially, the cost of the veg and non-veg thalis fell 6 per cent and 8 per cent, respectively. The ease in cost was due to a decrease of 26 per cent and 16 per cent month-on-month prices of onion and tomato, respectively, with higher domestic supply of onion amid export curbs and fresh tomato arrivals from the northern and eastern states, the report said. The cost of the non-veg thali declined faster due to an 8-10 per cent month-on-month dip in prices of broilers, which account for 50 per cent of the cost, it added.

Rising tomato & pulse prices push up veg thali cost in January, but non-veg thali costs come down

New Delhi, Dec 16 () Not just onion, retail prices of potato and other vegetables have also shot up in the national capital on Monday as recent winter rainfall has damaged some of the crops, according to traders.
 At the Azadpur wholesale mandi here, prices of main vegetables, especially onion, are ruling high in the range of Rs 70-90/kg, potato at Rs 22/kg, tomato at Rs 18/kg.
 For instance, wholesale rate of cabbage was quoting Rs 7-10/kg on Monday at Azadpur mandi, as against Rs 1.40-3/kg a year ago, cauliflower at Rs 8-22.50/kg as against Rs 5-10/kg in the previous year, while carrot at Rs 4-23/kg as against Rs 2-12/kg, and capsicum at Rs 12-22/kg as against Rs 6-12/kg in the said period, according to data from central government portal Agmarknet.
 However in retail markets, the rates are much higher depending on the quality and locality. Onion is available at above Rs 100/kg, potato at Rs 35-40/kg and tomato at Rs 60/kg in retail markets of the national capital region. Prices of other vegetables like gobi, cabbage and spinach double the rates quoted in the wholesale mandis.
 "The supply of most of the vegetables, including potato and tomato, has been affected because of recent rains. This has resulted in increase in prices," Potato and Onion Merchants Association at Azadpur mandi General Secretary Rajendra Sharma told .
 Some of the vegetable crops have been damaged and in some places, harvesting of onion and other crops has delayed due to water-logging in the farm fields, he said.
 Currently, Delhi is getting the potato supply from neighbouring Punjab and Haryana, where the crop is damaged because of last week's heavy rainfall. Similarly, harvesting of onion has been affected due to wet fields, he added.
 An onion trader at Azadpur said the arrival of fresh onion crop has not improved much even as private traders have started importing some small quantity.
 "We are not able to buy onions at such high rates, now potato and other vegetables are also becoming out of reach for poor people like us," e-rickshaw driver Akbar in Bhogal market said about rising food inflation.
 Milk and butter prices have also gone up. Even cooking oil prices, especially of mustard oil, has increased by Rs 15/kg litre, he said adding that it is becoming hard to feed family members.
 Onion prices have risen by 81 per cent in the last one month and are ruling above the Rs 100 per kg mark for the third week in a row in most cities, as government efforts to cool the rates seem to be taking more time than expected.
 Onion prices have skyrocketed as domestic production in Kharif and late-kharif seasons (summer-sown) is estimated to have declined by 22 per cent.
 The government has been maintaining that it has taken all possible steps to rein in prices such as allowing imports, imposing a ban on exports and putting restrictions on quantities of onions to be stocked by retailers and wholesalers. LUX HRS

Not only onion, prices of potato and other veggies on rise

New Delhi, Nov 27 () With onion prices continuing to rule high at Rs 80-90 per kg, the government on Wednesday extended prohibitions on traders from the stocking of edible bulb across the country for an indefinite period.
Separately, Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan did not say by when prices of onion will normalise. "It's not in our hand, the government is making maximum efforts but who can win from nature," he told reporters when asked by when onion prices will come down to reasonable level.
Besides stock holding limit, he said, the Centre has banned exports of onion and importing 1.2 lakh tonnes to control prices. Onion prices are ruling at Rs 70-80 per kg in retail markets across major cities.
"Stockholding limit on retailers and wholesalers are being further extended until further orders," an official statement said.
The stock holding limit was imposed in September. At present, retailers can stock onion only up to 100 quintals and wholesale traders are allowed to keep up to 500 quintals.
The decision was taken at an inter-ministerial meeting, chaired by Consumer Affairs Secretary A K Srivastava, to monitor the price and availability of onions across the country.
The consumer affairs secretary has written to chief secretaries of all states asking them to suitably reduce the stock limits further in their states as per the availability and prices. They have been asked to strictly enforce these stock limits and send an action taken report on a weekly basis.
State-owned MMTC informed that the first shipment of onions from Egypt would arrive in the second week of December. The public sector trading firm has contracted imports of 6,090 tonnes of onions. It has floated a country-specific tender.
Expressing concern over the price rise, Paswan said the situation is being closely monitored by a team of five Union ministers chaired by Home Minister Amit Shah. Finance minister, agriculture minister and road transport minister are also members of the group of ministers.
The group of ministers has already held one meeting and another one will be held soon, he said.
On November 19, Paswan had said onion production in Kharif and late-Kharif seasons of 2019-20 is estimated to fall 26 per cent to 5.2 million tonnes due to a delayed monsoon and then excessive rains in key growing areas.
The buffer stock of 57,000 tonnes of onions has been liquidated and therefore the Centre decided to import.
Meanwhile, MMTC has been asked to work out modalities of transportation of sealed container of onions from Mumbai port directly to FHEL facility at Rai, Sonipat in Haryana.
Agriculture Ministry in consultation with National Horticulture Board will provide an assessment about shelf-life in cold storage facility of imported onions from Egypt. MMTC has informed that onions from Turkey/Holland can be stored for relatively longer periods as compared to those from Egypt given the respective climatic conditions. MJH MR

And there is a reason. The city of Mumbai is saddled with the costliest market price of this staple food—at ₹140 per kilogram (kg). This of course is for good quality onions. There is a large market for partly squashed and rotting onions as well, which is going at an exorbitant price of ₹80 a kilo. For good quality onions though, the <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/commodities/news/wholesale-onion-prices-hit-rs-100/kg/articleshow/72269648.cms">wholesale price </a>itself hit a ₹100.  In the city of Hyderabad however, government owned farmer’s markets called Rythu Bazaars are selling onions ₹30 below the market rate. “But for that we have to stand in line for hours together and show Aadhar cards. Even after that, only a limited quantity of onions is given like one or two kgs,” Jaya RaviShankar, a homemaker from the city, told Business Insider. The high price of onion and garlic, which is also above ₹120 a kilo, has affected the sale of meat and meat products. The retail prices of chicken came down by ₹10 as per data collected from Navi Mumbai market in Vashi. The price of onions went up considerably after erratic rains affected crops in major onion producing states like Karnataka, Telangana and Maharashtra. Rains have been affecting the supply and consumption of many fruits and vegetables but the rising cost of staples has been disrupting Indian home economics. Last month, tomato prices have peaked to around ₹70 per kilo. That had forced Delhi government to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/policy/news/indian-government-is-offering-puree-as-an-alternative-to-costly-tomatoes/articleshow/71534211.cms">peddle tomato puree </a>as an alternative—especially during the festive season.
