"Obesity is emerging as a serious concern among India's adult population," said the Survey, which was tabled on Monday by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in Parliament. If India needs to "reap the gains of its demographic dividend, it is critical that its population's health parameters transition towards a balanced and diverse diet", it said. Citing a report from the Indian Council for Medical Research, the Economic Survey observed that the rise in consumption of highly processed foods laden with sugars and fat, coupled with reduced physical activity and limited access to diverse foods, exacerbate micronutrient deficiencies and overweight/obesity problems. Estimates show that the adult obesity rate in India has more than tripled, and the rise in children is the steepest in the world for India, behind Vietnam and Namibia, the survey stated, referring to a World Obesity Federation report. The survey further said as per National Family Health Survey (NFHS), the incidence of obesity is significantly higher in urban India than in rural India. In urban India, it is 29.8 per cent in men versus 19.3 per cent of rural India. The percentage of men facing obesity in the 18-69 age bracket has increased to 22.9 per cent in NFHS-5 from 18.9 per cent in NFHS-4. For women, it has increased from 20.6 per cent (NFHS-4) to 24 per cent (NFHS-5). "Combined with an ageing population in some states, obesity presents a concerning situation. Preventive measures must be taken to enable citizens to have a healthier lifestyle," the survey said. In some states, such as in the NCT (Delhi), the proportion of women with obesity is 41.3 per cent, as against 38 per cent for men. In Tamil Nadu, for men, obesity is 37 per cent and it is 40.4 per cent for women. In Andhra, it is 36.3 per cent for women while for men it is 31.1 per cent. Rising obesity a concern, preventive measures must be taken for healthier lifestyle: Eco Survey

A newly developed model could predict an individual's chances of developing osteoporosis, in which the bones degrade and become weak and brittle, according to a study. Testing the AI-based model on real-world health data of people, researchers identified the ten most important factors for predicting risk of osteoporosis, including weight, age and grip strength, along with blood pressure and smoking and alcohol habits. A form of artificial intelligence, deep learning algorithms mimic human brains to find trends in large datasets. Using the model could potentially lead to earlier diagnoses and better outcomes for patients with <keyword id="22247758" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="osteoporosis-risk" source="keywords">osteoporosis risk</keyword>, according to the authors of the study detailing the model, which is published in the journal Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence. "The earlier osteoporosis risk is detected, the more time a patient has for <keyword id="22247760" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="preventative-measures" source="keywords">preventative measures</keyword>," said lead author Chuan Qiu, a research assistant professor at the Tulane School of Medicine. There are growing reports of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/north-korea-troops-aid-russia-what-means-for-ukraine-war-2024-10">a mass North Korean deployment</a> in support of <keyword id="20021739" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Russian-troops" source="keywords">Russian troops</keyword>. On Wednesday, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said "there is evidence" that North Korean troops were training in Russia. Scattered reports have claimed that smaller numbers of North Korean troops are already in Ukraine. It's often inherited from the actions of your parents or even grandparents, and has been described as effectively a form of caste system. According to a <a href="https://www.hrnk.org/wp-content/uploads/pdfs/publications/eng/HRNK_Songbun_Web.pdf" target="_blank">landmark work</a> on the subject by Robert Collins, an expert on North Korean security, only those classed as most loyal can become army officers. Kim is likely to only send "politically reliable people" to fight, Bermudez said. Those sent to aid Russia are likely accompanied by officials from the ruling Workers' Party of Korea, he added. "They file reports on everybody." "Are they drinking too much? Are they trying to acquire goods that they can't get in North Korea and send them home?" They're also likely to have to undergo <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-03-31/welcome-to-north-koreas-self-criticism-classes/10936152">self-criticism sessions</a>, Bermudez said — an intense group practice of confessing one's shortcomings. They might berate themselves by saying something like: "'I didn't think of the Kim family 20 times today," said Bermudez. "'I only did 15.'" He said soldiers would be sent to a re-indoctrination camp on their return to North Korea to reaffirm their loyalty. Those who return would likely be honored and given greater privileges, such as a better job. "It is very typical for the Kims to insist that at least one member of any family operating overseas remain in Pyongyang as a hostage," he told BI. And anyone who does defect ensures that their whole family suffers, Bermudez said. "North Korea believes in generational punishment." In interviews with escapees and defectors, he said, "one of the greatest sorrows that they have is that they've left family." That's because their extended family would likely be sent to brutal work camps — described by Bermudez described as similar to a Nazi work camp or a Soviet gulag. <h2>An opportunity for the West?</h2>Kim is"scared to death" of information being brought back to North Korea from abroad, Bennett said. The leader rails against culture from the outside world — like in 2021, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kim-jon-un-called-k-pop-vicious-cancer-framed-threat-2021-6">when he called K-Pop a "vicious cancer"</a> — because he perceives it as a major threat, Bennett said. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://nationalinterest.org/blog/korea-watch/kim-jong-uns-fears-could-be-exploited-211224">An earlier assessment in The National Interest</a> argued that South Korea, in particular, is well-positioned to exploit this anxiety. Removed Angel Tax, taking policy measures to promote fintech sector: PM Modi

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Carsten Brinkschulte, who founded Dryad Networks, built an IoT network to detect wildfires.</li><li>He's motivated by the impact of his work and urges founders and engineers to move to green tech.</li></ul>This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Carsten Brinkschulte, the CEO of Dryad Networks, an IoT company offering wildfire-detection tech. The following has been edited for length and clarity.You know the saying "Once you have a hammer, everything starts to look like a nail"?That's what happened when I started learning more about the planet's growing <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/climate-change-migration-where-moved-escape-natural-disasters-extreme-weather">wildfire problem</a> and its impact on climate change. With 25 years of experience scaling three startups in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/5g-transforms-businesses-better-security-remote-capabilities-2024-5">telecommunications</a>, I wondered how I could apply that technical and business knowledge to solving this problem.What if we could create sensors that could detect wildfires and then have those sensors communicate back to authorities before the fire is a major issue? With these questions in mind, I cofounded <a target="_blank" href="https://www.dryad.net/">Dryad Networks</a>.<h2 id="89eba62a-12a8-4c0f-b628-46d2f454c838">A series of technical challenges</h2>While the vision for our solution was clear from the start, there were a lot of technical hurdles in making it real.The first was how to detect fires. Instead of relying on vision via satellites and cameras, which only work when fires are already large, we focused on smell to catch fires at the early smoldering stage. We built a "digital nose," a gas sensor sensitive to hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and volatile organic compounds, with built-in AI to detect fire patterns in a distributed, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-edge-computing-5g-cloud-artificial-intelligence-2024-3">edge-computing</a> manner.<div type="image" title="A green and black sensor device on top of tree bark." height="3194" width="2396" msid="113885493" hostid="261" sizebytes="850234"></div>Building these sensors happened relatively quickly — but training the AI to work reliably took years. Every forest and tree species smells different when they're burning, so we've gathered data from customers around the world and even burned tree samples in our lab.Another challenge was powering the devices. Unlike with at-home IoT devices, replacing batteries in millions of forest sensors every two years isn't feasible. We aimed for 10 to 15 years of battery life, added <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-panel-industry-electricity-generation-us-eia-tariff-prices-trade-2024-2">solar panels</a>, and used supercapacitors to store power instead of lithium-ion batteries to avoid fire risk.Finally there was the question of how the devices would communicate information. As you know if you've been hiking, there's often no mobile network in the forest. To solve for this, we developed our own solar-powered mesh gateway that could connect to sensors via an IoT network and relay information back to a cloud platform.<div type="image" title="A green device with a black grid screen in the middle, attached to a tree trunk in a forest." height="3456" width="2592" msid="113885494" hostid="261" sizebytes="1568642"></div>Given how much technology needed to be engineered from the ground up — the electronics, the embedded software, the cloud platform, the AI — we started with a team of seven cofounders and took three years to develop the technology and another year and a half to prepare it to scale.<h2 id="ce79374e-13ac-41bc-9adb-fb00e4258e7f">Proving value beyond money</h2>A persistent challenge with green tech is that many solutions require hardware — something VCs traditionally avoid. Getting the necessary funding for development can be tricky.Fortunately, there are now plenty of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/investing/esg-investing">impact investors</a> who prioritize making a difference on global issues. Yes, they also want to see that you can build a profitable business, but they're willing to accept more capital requirements or a delay in return if you can prove your solution will have a meaningful and measurable impact.Many <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/green-energy-transition-saves-millions-years-healthy-human-life-2023-11">green-tech</a> companies claim wonderful things about what their solution will do, but they need to quantify it. When working toward <a target="_blank" href="https://www.globenewswire.com/en/news-release/2024/03/20/2849406/0/en/Dryad-Networks-Announces-Initial-Closing-of-5-6-Million-in-Convertible-Financing.html">our fundraising goal</a>, we took months to calculate how many global CO2 emissions come from wildfires — a staggering <a target="_blank" href="https://ourworldindata.org/wildfires">5 billion to 8 billion tons a year</a> — and then project how much of that could be prevented with our sensors. Our financial plan includes those numbers to show the impact we can have alongside the money we can make.<h2 id="1863b547-6fd5-4c92-9756-e121e4390171">A wealth of possibilities</h2>Our ultimate goal is to develop applications that utilize the network infrastructure we put in place to protect and restore one of our most important assets: <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/a-groundbreaking-new-reason-to-plant-more-trees-2024-7">forests</a>. The first is fire detection, but in the future we may add sensors that measure the environmental risk of fire before one even starts, monitor tree and soil health, and detect gunshots or chainsaws to prevent poaching and illegal logging.I encourage other engineers and founders to get out of building the next smartphone and do something impactful with the knowledge they've gained. Getting into green tech is the best thing you can ever do — it's rewarding financially and motivating to see that you're building something useful.
