<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Business Insider/James Cook</span></p></div><p></p></div></div><keyword id="6354868" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="UK">UK</keyword> spy agency GCHQ, the British equivalent of the NSA, has taken the unusual step of covering trendy London neighbourhood Shoreditch with ads for jobs at the intelligence agency.</p><p>The "clean" graffiti ads, which are created using a pressure washer and a stencil, direct applicants to apply for "technical opportunities" at the agency.</p><p>The ads have been appearing around Shoreditch, which is home to lots of different technology startups, and so could be a good place for GCHQ to hire technical talent.</p><p>GCHQ confirmed to Business Insider that the ads were real.</p><p>But there's something weird about the ads: The website doesn't work. I had vague plans of traveling for six months and then returning to the US to look for a new job, until I found myself in the middle of a cheesy romance plot I never asked for.</p><p>To give you the condensed version: I fell in love with Costa Rica ... and with the chef at an eco-lodge where I was taking Spanish lessons.</p><p>By the time I ran low on money, I'd realized I didn't want to go back to the US or a desk job. Going back would mean breaking up with my partner, who can't even get approved for a tourist visa to the US because of where he was born. It would also mean leaving a country I'd grown deeply attached to and applying for jobs I wasn't excited about. </p><p>So instead, I set out to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/quit-my-job-for-side-hustle-best-decision-2019-7">build my own freelancing business online</a> so that I could work from anywhere. I decided to make a living doing something I'd dreamt of doing every since I was a kid: writing.</p><h2>Nearing six figures as a freelancer and increasing my savings rate</h2><p>My first year as a freelance writer was very difficult, and the second year wasn't much better. But by the third year, I had what felt like a reasonably stable income. Now, in my fourth year, I make more than double what I made in my previous career. I'm on track to make $85,000 in 2019. My goal for 2020 is to make six figures.</p><p>My income fluctuates a lot because <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/digital-nomad-wealthier-than-ever-2019-7">I take time off to travel</a>. My highest-grossing months this year were months in which I didn't travel and worked 40 to 50 hours per week - in February, I made $9,598, and in July, I made $10,478. My lowest grossing months were the three months that I traveled and worked more like 10 hours per week - in March I made $4,315, in April I made $4,522, and in May I made $2,201.</p><p>In 2018, I made <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/paying-off-debt">paying off all of my debt</a> a priority. After I did that, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/high-yield-savings-emergency-fund-2019-8">building an emergency savings fund</a> became my focus. For 2019, my goal was to save $3,000 per month to round out my emergency savings fund and start saving for retirement and potential mid-term savings goals like purchasing land or going back to school.</p><p>I managed to meet that goal most months. While my savings rate dipped lower during travel months, it skyrocketed during the months I spent at home.</p><h2>I spend less on rent, transportation, and food</h2><p>I don't believe that depriving yourself of the occasional latte is an effective way to save money. For one, that $3.50 doesn't add up very quickly, and it's hard to build sustainable habits when you feel deprived.</p><p>Instead, I've always believed that the best way to cut expenses and boost your savings rate is by cutting down on your <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-save-more-money-2017-8">three biggest costs</a>: rent, transportation, and food.</p><p>While my monthly income and spending fluctuate pretty drastically - for example, I took most of April off to travel around Japan and went from having a $9,000 month in February to a $2,000 month in May - here's what a typical month looks like:</p><h2><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></h2><h3><strong>Rent</strong></h3><p>My rent is where I cut costs the most. It's common for Americans who move here to rent or buy big American-style homes in gated communities with air conditioning, pools, and other amenities. Instead, I rent a typical Costa Rican home, a small two-bedroom house in a rainforest town. I pay $180 per month, so I save a lot of money, and I get to be part of the community there.</p><h3>Transportation</h3><p>For my first three years in Costa Rica, I was car-free. This isn't an easy feat when you live somewhere rural with limited bus service, but I made it work, and my boyfriend had his motorcycle for short trips. Last year, my boyfriend's motorcycle broke down, and I finally decided to get a car.</p><p>Cars are more expensive in Costa Rica, and I didn't want to eat into my savings, so I bought a 1995 Geo Tracker for $3,500 in cash. Most people wouldn't be comfortable in such an old car, but I don't mind it. I also still walk and use the bus whenever feasible, so we aren't putting too many miles on the car.</p><h3>Food</h3><p>For food, I do a lot of meal prep and try to buy lots of low-cost, high-nutrition foods like beans, bananas, oatmeal, and eggs. I also eat out at least a few times per week when I don't have any meals prepared. A plate of food at a typical restaurant is around $6, and the time I save not cooking or doing the dishes can be spent working and making more money. </p><p>Food is one area where I'm only willing to sacrifice so much - which you can tell from the fact that I spend $300 per month on groceries that are mostly for me. I still buy fancy nut and seed mixes for my oatmeal and coconut milk for my coffee, and I always keep a bottle of quality rum on hand for visitors. However, I've got some wiggle room here and will try to lower my food costs next year, both groceries and dining out, by doing more meal prep.</p><h2>Most of my money goes toward luxuries and purchases that save me time</h2><p>While I spend relatively little on necessities, I spend what many people would consider to be too much on things like travel and personal care. </p><p>For example, I spend more than $12,000 per year on travel. This includes travel for both me and my boyfriend. We don't have a strict method for splitting up our finances, but since I have the privilege of being able to make US dollars and thus a higher income, I usually pay all of our bills and major travel expenses like flights and hotels.</p><p>We also travel pretty heavily on this. By the end of 2019, I'll have traveled to over a dozen countries on four different continents this year. The two of us manage to travel on a low budget by collecting <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/credit-card-points-free-luxury-trips-2019-5">credit-card rewards</a> to pay for flights and hotels or staying in budget accommodations like hostels and Airbnb or with friends.</p><p>I also get my hair done three times per year, and it costs me $300 each time. Every two to three weeks, I get my nails done for $20 to $30. These are expenses most <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/super-savers-work-with-financial-advisors-2019-9">super savers</a> would advise against, but they're worth it to me.</p><p>Outsourcing tasks that are time-consuming might seem more expensive than DIY, but because I'm self-employed, I can make more money in the time I've freed up than I spend on outsourcing. For example, I still haven't purchased a washer for the house because I'd rather spend $30 per month to have laundry done at the corner store. I have a housekeeper come twice per month, which costs $40. I also outsource some of my business tasks to a Virtual Assistant and usually spend about $300 per month on that. All of this time saved is time I can spend building my business.</p><p>Despite "extravagant" costs like getting my hair or laundry done, my savings rate hovers around 50% and is creeping upward. That's because I've driven my big three costs as close to zero as possible. </p><p>People might think it's odd that I make $85,000 per year and spend $12,000 of it on travel. But they probably also think it's odd that I make $85,000 per year and drive a car that's 24 years old. My priorities are simply different than what's considered the "norm."</p><p>Living abroad also makes it easier to align my expenses with my priorities. In the US, even when I'm only visiting, I feel an almost instant pressure upon arriving to constantly spend money on things I don't need and upgrade my lifestyle, and that pressure just isn't as strong in many other places. I check in with myself frequently to make sure that my spending is still aligned with what I truly want and not what society says I should want. This helps me live a rich life on a limited budget.</p><h2>On my way to financial independence</h2><p>My goal is to continue <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/high-yield-savings-accounts-help-spend-less-save-more-2019-8">saving</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wish-i-listened-to-dads-money-investing-advice">investing</a> my money at an extremely high rate until I achieve some level of financial independence. </p><p>This is an important goal for me in part because I worry that there won't be demand for my work one day, and I'll have to find a new way to make money. But it's also important because I want to have the financial freedom to pursue personal projects and focus on doing good in the world.</p><p>I want to cut down on travel next year so I can focus on working more consistent hours. I plan to increase my savings rate by cutting costs on travel and eating out. At the same time, I plan to invest more in myself by taking courses that teach me valuable skills and attending conferences to network with people in my industry.</p><p>With this plan, my income should increase, and I should also have more time to work on projects that will <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-have-multiple-income-streams-2017-10">diversify my income sources</a>. Right now, most of my income comes from freelance writing, so I'm working on creating products, writing a book, and building up a consulting business so that I don't have to rely on one stream of income. This will increase my financial stability.</p><p>My life is unconventional, but I wouldn't have it any other way. Some people fear self-employment because there's no guarantee your job will be there next year, and that's true - but there's no guarantee that a traditional job will be there for you next year, either. </p><p>If I lose my main income sources, I've learned two very valuable skills through my first few years of hustling as a freelancer that would help me out: how to live off of very little, and how to market myself. The Internet Of Things Is Creating A New Growth Opportunity For The Consumer Tech And Electronics Industries

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Nissan</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Every driver knows that no matter what type of car you drive, winter is <a href="http://www.accuweather.com/en/weather-news/five-ways-cold-can-damage-your/22612192">taking its toll</a>: less fuel efficiency, lower tire pressure, and frozen windshield wipers and washer solvent, for example.</p><p>What you might not know is that all-electric cars suffer far greater in winter time - fuel efficiency wise - compared to gasoline and diesel guzzlers.</p><p>However, there is a way to lengthen the life of your battery during these frigid times of year.</p><p>Let's first compare the numbers:</p><ul><li>When temperatures drop below 20 degrees Fahrenheit (F), conventional gasoline cars see a dip in gas mileage of about <strong>12%</strong> while in hybrids that mileage drops by as much as <strong>34%</strong>, according to the <a href="http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/coldweather.shtml">Environmental Protection Agency and Energy Department</a>.</li><li>That's nothing compared to all-electric cars. In 2014, the <a href="http://newsroom.aaa.com/2014/03/extreme-temperatures-affect-electric-vehicle-driving-range-aaa-says/">AAA Automotive Research Center in Southern California</a> published results of its study that tested how driving range of three all-electric vehicles varied with temperature. At a steady 20 degrees F, the all-electric vehicles traveled a shocking <strong>57%</strong> shorter distance on a single charge than they did at 75 degrees F. On average, an electric vehicle's batteries transported drivers <strong>105 miles at 75 degrees F but only 43 miles at 20 degrees F</strong>, the <a href="http://newsroom.aaa.com/2014/03/extreme-temperatures-affect-electric-vehicle-driving-range-aaa-says/">AAA reported</a>.</li></ul><p>Part of the reason for these nasty numbers is because batteries simply don't run as efficiently in the cold. But another big problem could be the way you're warming the car's cabin. Cabin heaters zap large amounts of energy from the batteries.</p><p>"EVs are not able to scavenge waste heat for cabin heating the way a conventional vehicles can with an internal combustion engine," Henning Lohse-Busch - the manager for vehicle systems research at Argonne National Laboratory's Center for <keyword id="34991" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="transportation">Transportation</keyword> Research - told Business Insider.</p><p>Thankfully, there's a better way. You can avoid draining your batteries in the cold and extend the car's range by plugging the car in before you drive it. That way, you're taking energy directly from the grid, and not your batteries, to warm the cabin.</p><p>Another perk of this approach is that you can do it remotely, within the comfort of your home or office, Lohse-Busch explained.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"Nearly all modern Plug-in Electric Vehicles (PEVs) have the capacity to warm the cabin remotely using electricity from the grid while the vehicle is still plugged in, often using a <a href="http://mashable.com/2009/10/13/viper-smartstart/">smart phone app</a>," he said. "This approach makes sense on cold days, as you won't be using your battery's electricity to initially warm the vehicle, which would reduce your range. If your vehicle is not plugged in to the grid, you can still remotely warm it, but you will be using your vehicle's batteries for that warming, and your range will be decreased."</p><p>Once you're on the road, another way to conserve energy and extend range is to use the seat warmers instead of the cabin heater, according ot the <a href="http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/coldweather.shtml">Environmental Protection Agency and Energy Department</a>.</p><p><em>(Note: If you own a conventional gasoline car, you should try to avoid warming your cabin until after you start driving. Sinai Hospital in <keyword id="6355838" type="LOCATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="new-york">New York</keyword> City, which has experienced the nation's worst outbreak, Mendoza believes <keyword id="6354525" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="healthcare">healthcare</keyword> workers need protective gear — not hero worship.</li><li>Having seen patients suffering, Mendoza is concerned by people pushing to reopen the <keyword id="34412" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="economy">economy</keyword> and worries that the lack of social distancing will cause an increase in COVID-19 cases.</li><li>He believes the United States government failed its people, healthcare workers included, with its haphazard and lackluster response to the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-cases-maps-us-world-spread-symptoms-death-rate-2020-1">pandemic</a>.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories</a>.</li></ul><p>KP Mendoza was running in Central Park last week when he was flooded by exhaustion, anxiety, guilt, and frustration.</p><p>As the relentless pressure of being a nurse battling the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-kill-300000-people-restrictions-lifted-prematurely-2020-4">pandemic</a> in New York bore down on him, Mendoza began thinking about what could happen if he contracted the <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword>. </p><p>So, at 24, he decided to draft a will.</p><p>Mendoza is young and healthy. But treating <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-cases-maps-us-world-spread-symptoms-death-rate-2020-1">COVID-19</a>patients, wearing the same N95 mask for hours and even days at a time, forced him to think seriously about dying. It's all the worse that the US, he said, was woefully unprepared for a pandemic and millions of people have since moved on to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-to-warn-users-who-liked-coronavirus-hoaxes-2020-4">dismissing it</a> as a hoax. </p><p>Mendoza expressed this maelstrom of emotions on <a href="https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=10216675094816293&amp;set=a.13732170969866986">Facebook</a>. His gut-wrenching words have since been shared over 132,000 times, with people thanking him, offering prayers, and lifting him up.</p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-york-coronavirus-crisis-1-month-cases-surge-apex-2020-4">Overwhelmed</a> by the attention and praise, Mendoza, a surgical and transplant ICU nurse at <keyword id="283692" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Mount-Sinai-Hospital">Mount Sinai Hospital</keyword>, said that he stands by the first sentence of his post: "I am no hero. I am not ready to die."</p><p>Having graduated from New York University in 2018, Mendoza, who considers himself a "baby nurse," told Business Insider that he is not looking to be a "savior" or a "martyr."</p><p>"This is my first job, and I didn't sign up to die because I wasn't protected enough," he said. "I'm not here to just mitigate my own death. I'm here to do good work and to go home and come back the next day to continue doing good work."</p><p>As of Thursday, New York has confirmed more than <a href="https://gisanddata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html#/bda7594740fd40299423467b48e9ecf6">263,700 coronavirus cases and over 19,400 deaths</a>. Nurses around the United States have been calling on the Trump administration to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-ppe-testing-shortage-nurses-union-protest-white-house-2020-4">increase the production of personal protective equipment</a> (<keyword id="1676024" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="PPE">PPE</keyword>) and ramp up testing so they're not caring for patients in unsafe working conditions.</p><p>"I've been shocked by the US's response to the virus," Mendoza said. "I didn't think it would be so lacking. I didn't think we would struggle as hard as we did to contain the virus and to appropriately test for it."</p><h2>'My goal is to save them, and I can't'</h2><p>With elective surgeries having been called off, Mendoza hasn't seen anyone other than a COVID-19 patient since early March.</p><p>One nurse usually takes care of two patients a day at Mount Sinai, he said, but the influx of patients from mid-March into April increased that tally to three patients.</p><p>Mendoza is an Illinois native and the son of two nurses. He was drawn to medicine based on the belief that there's no "greater gift you can give to a person than their health." But when <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fdny-emergency-responder-coronavirus-worse-than-september-11-2020-4">the pandemic hit</a>, he started waking up sweaty, with an elevated heart rate, and filled with dread, as if his body knew what awaited him at work.</p><p>"Pre-pandemic, I used to tell myself when I left the hospital that I made a difference," he said. "Now I just feel like I went to work and prolonged my patients' lives."</p><p><div type="image" title="KP Mendoza Mount Sinai Hospital chairs coronavirus" height="2229" width="2971" msid="75335184" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Several patients' experiences have stuck with Mendoza: A woman in her 30s reminded him of his sister. A pregnant COVID-19 patient underwent an emergency C-section that saved her baby, but then she died. There was also a newly retired MTA worker who was counting down the days to his family's South African vacation; he and his wife were hospitalized around the same time but he was sedated when she died.</p><p>"It makes me feel like I'm not doing nearly enough for these people because ultimately my goal is to save them, and I can't — not even with all of the medicines in the world, not even with the most brilliant doctors at Mount Sinai. It's completely disheartening to know that what you're doing doesn't change much," he said.</p><h2>'How do you prioritize your needs when all your needs are a priority?'</h2><p>Swamped by this feeling of inadequacy, Mendoza turned to social media after "a particularly bad week," recalling how one of his patients nearly died at the end of his shift.</p><p>"Sometimes, I get so busy that patients lie in their own stool longer than I would like to admit," he wrote on Facebook. "How do you find time to clean your patient when your other patient's heart rate just reached 0 next door?"</p><p>Mendoza rushed to help the patient who was flatlining with a sinking feeling.</p><p>"How do you prioritize your needs when all your needs are a priority?" he wondered.</p><p><div type="image" title="New York coronavirus" height="1429" width="1905" msid="75335186" hostid="261"></div></p><p>He also described the gut-wrenching moment when a woman, who thought her mother was stable, called to check on her only to learn that her condition had deteriorated dramatically.</p><p>"So, I reluctantly but gently told her that if I stopped the IV pump right now, her mother would die," Mendoza wrote on Facebook. "I had to be blunt — why lie or sugarcoat what is happening? Uncontrollably and expectedly, she began to weep.</p><p>"I have auscultated the sounds of a dying heart. But, never before have I heard a dying heart through the phone."</p><p>Unfortunately, that's all too common now, Mendoza said, since family members aren't allowed to see their relatives because COVID-19 is highly contagious.</p><p>So, nurses like him help connect grieving families over FaceTime. </p><p>"I've had to give bad <keyword id="6355005" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="news">news</keyword> before, but when families are at the bedside, they can see that their loved one is not doing so well," he said. "Even if they're in denial that their family member is dying, they can see just how sick they are. But now, you don't see anything so that news causes extreme distress."</p><h2>Healthcare workers need more PPE, not hero worship, Mendoza says</h2><p>In Mendoza's role, it's common for patients and families to heap thanks to him. And during the pandemic, that appreciation has justly been turned up several notches. Every day at 7 p.m. in New York, people clap, cheer, honk, and ring bells in honor of healthcare workers. </p><p>But even as they lift his spirits, Mendoza becomes incensed by the public's wartime analogies that compare hospitals to the "front line" of the pandemic and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nyc-coronavirus-patient-last-words-affordable-treatment-intubation-derrick-smith-2020-4">medical workers</a> to "heroes."</p><p>People are either very sick or even dying when they go to the hospital, making them the "last resort — not the first choice," Mendoza said.</p><p>This is particularly true in New York where people are avoiding <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-icu-patients-new-york-fell-first-time-cuomo-says-2020-4">overrun facilities</a> because they lack faith that they'll get high-quality treatment, and are <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fdny-ems-first-responders-trauma-guilt-coronavirus-ptsd-2020-4">afraid of catching the virus</a> in a hospital setting.</p><p>Also, he added, "You would not think about telling a soldier, 'You're wearing too much to go into battle, you should have less' or 'Maybe you don't need that bulletproof vest, maybe you don't need this helmet.' That's why I say, don't call me a hero. Instead, show your support by believing us when we say we need much more PPE."</p><p><div type="image" title="KP Mendoza brown bag" height="4000" width="3000" msid="75335189" hostid="261"></div></p><p>In terms of PPE, Mendoza said he has enough gloves and medical shoe covers, and just got a new face shield after using the older one for 17 days. The gowns, though available, tear easily and are not completely waterproof. Masks, however, continue to be a pain point.</p><p>In the early days of the pandemic, Mendoza used one N95 mask for his entire 12-plus hour shift. That's been the case since the second week of April. He's taken to placing a piece of tape on the bridge of his nose, where the mask hurts the most.</p><p>But in early April, a shortage of medical supplies forced him to re-use the same disposable mask for four days. He sanitized it with bleach and put the mask in a biohazard ziplock bag, which was then placed in a brown paper bag with his name and a smiley face, so it could be stored overnight, he says.</p><p>"The brown paper bag is a ridiculous, feeble attempt to pretend as if we're keeping our masks clean and to make us more comfortable with reusing them," he said. "There are memes on nursing pages and all these inside jokes that say the coronavirus is waiting for us when we put our masks in the bags."</p><p>Researchers have warned that the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-long-covid19-can-last-on-face-masks-research-study-2020-4">coronavirus can last for seven days</a> on the surface of masks.</p><h2>Mendoza thinks he'll eventually get the virus — if he doesn't have it already</h2><p>Given his proximity to a hearty virus that has <a href="https://gisanddata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html#/bda7594740fd40299423467b48e9ecf6">infected 2.64 million people worldwide</a> and more than 842,600 people in the US alone, Mendoza is making every effort to protect himself.</p><p>At the end of every shift, he changes his clothes and drops off his scrubs to be laundered at the hospital before removing his shoe covers with gloved hands. Then the gloves come off and he used hand sanitizer. After biking home, he strips as soon as he enters his apartment, puts his streetwear in the washer and his lunch box in the sink, and makes a beeline for the shower. Along with constantly washing his hands, he bleaches the ground where his shoes sit and even his neck because that's where patients' respiratory tubes sometimes touch him as he is tending to them.</p><p>But Mendoza's now resigned to the fact that he's either had COVID-19, currently has it, or will get it in the future.</p><p>"As valiant as my efforts may be, I probably have the virus somewhere in my apartment right now," said Mendoza, who takes solace in the fact that he "unlikely" to succumb to the coronavirus because he is young, healthy, and has no underlying health conditions, but knows that he faces an "exponentially higher" risk because of his work.</p><p><div type="image" title="KP Mendoza face shield.JPG" height="1440" width="1111" msid="75335191" hostid="261"></div></p><p>It's this grim reality that pushed him to write a "skeleton" will, which has yet to be notarized but gives his "meager savings" to his parents, his plants to his mother, and postcards from his travels to different family members based on the thoughts he penned in them.</p><p>"Children aren't supposed to die before their parents," he said, "So I imagine myself breaking my parents' hearts irreparably if I succumb to this virus and that's something that motivated me to really start thinking about and hashing out these details."</p><p>While Mendoza faces one "painful truth" about the virus after another, it's baffling for him to see people swarming beaches in Florida, Kentucky <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/religion/2020/03/12/kentuckys-governor-asked-churches-cancel-services-some-pastors-feel-singled-out/">pastors complaining about canceled services</a>, and people protesting coronavirus lockdowns and wanting to return to work in Arizona, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Minnesota, and elsewhere. </p><h2>'At what cost are people wanting to reopen the economy?'</h2><p>Despite the grueling nature of his job, Mendoza agreed that he is fortunate to have a job and not be worried about how he will pay his bills or keep a roof over his head. </p><p>"I know people are suffering," he said, "but what concerns me is the influx of coronavirus cases that might occur should restrictions be lifted too early. So my question is: At what cost are people wanting to reopen the economy?"</p><p>The governors of Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee are planning to reopen as early as this week and demonstrators across the nation have been spotted toting signs, saying, "I need a haircut," "Give me liberty or give me COVID-19," and "End the virus not the economy."</p><p><div type="image" title="coronavirus protest lockdown anti-quarantine" height="1333" width="1777" msid="75335194" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Meanwhile, healthcare workers have been excoriated, Mendoza said, with people saying "You signed up for it" or "You should be used to death," while conspiracy theorists claim that the pandemic is merely a hoax.</p><p>"If people dying doesn't convince you that safety and social distancing are important, then frankly, I don't know what will," he said. </p><p>The way Mendoza sees it, the coronavirus also exposed deep cracks in the US medical system, including high healthcare costs, insufficient medical resources, and unequal access to insurance. It also put on garish display how marginalized communities, like the homeless, and people of color, who live paycheck to paycheck and struggle with ongoing health inequities, are <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/covid-19-disproportionately-kills-african-americans-data-suggests-2020-4">bearing the brunt of this disease</a>.</p><p>He also expressed keen disappointment in organizations like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention "that are meant to set standards of excellence and standards of protection for you as a healthcare worker," but instead created <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-cdc-atlanta-lab-faulty-test-kit-investigation-2020-3">faulty coronavirus tests</a> and then provided guidance on <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cdc-recommending-cloth-masks-face-coverings-in-public-spaces-2020-4">the use face masks</a> — only to walk it back. </p><p>"It just makes you wonder, 'Who is protecting me?'' Mendoza said. "We're the ones protecting people from the virus and treating them, but, as a healthcare worker, who's treating me? These Are The Killer Apps That Will Make 'The Internet Of Things' Indispensable In Everyday Life

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div>Laundry is a time-consuming chore I'd rather not think about.</p>
<p>That's why I was eager to try out <a href="http://www.getwashio.com/">Washio</a>, an 0n-demand laundry startup with door-to-door service. </p>
<p>I tried something like Washio in college. Laundry Luv, as it was called, would wash and fold as much clothing as I could fit in a laundry bag and return it two days later. It wasn't affordable and there certainly wasn't an app to help you out. But in the modern era, almost every service you could imagine is available through an app  - especially in San Francisco, where I live.</p>
<p>When I opened up the Washio app I was prompted to enter my address and payment info. The app takes Apple Pay, too.</p>
<p>Once I entered my info, I hit the "order" tab to set up my delivery. The app lets you schedule your pickup, delivery, and how frequently you'd like your laundry done all on the same page. You don't have to commit to a reoccurring order to use Washio; one of the options is "one time only."</p>
<p>The <a href="https://app.getwashio.com/prices">pricing</a> is easy to understand. Washio weighs your laundry after it's picked up and charges by by the pound. In San Francisco, simple wash and fold service is $1.60 a pound. <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Washio offers dry cleaning service too, and will even wash your blankets and outwear like coats, but those options are more expensive. Dry cleaning a two-piece suit costs $15 and a formal dress costs $24.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">I scheduled my laundry pickup for Tuesday at 9pm and delivery for Wednesday at 9 pm. Both times, they gave me 30 minute windows. Pickups are always the next day.</span></p>
<p>The company gives you a black reusable bag to put your clothes in on your first delivery. The person who picked up my laundry reminded me not to include items I thought might shrink.</p>
<p>Loading my dirty laundry into Washio's bag was a little weird. I felt pressured to shove my clothes in the bag as quickly as possible while trying to pick out shirts I thought would shrink. The person picking up my laundry was polite and tried not to stare at me while I did this.</p>
<p>Drivers usually show up with a cookie when they pick up your dirty clothes, but mine didn't. It was the end of the day and he had run out from previous pickups. </p>
<p>Once my laundry was out of sight, it was out of mind. I didn't think about it at all until I was waiting for my delivery on Wednesday.</p>
<p>When my clothes arrived, I got a card thanking me for using Washio. Still no cookie, though. My laundry was divided into two bags: one for socks and underwear and another for everything else.</p>
<p>It was kind of amazing to look at the finished product. All my laundry was meticulously folded. Socks were paired correctly. It was glorious.</p>

<p>It's a good thing Washio is such a friendly company, because on-demand laundry isn't cheap.</p>
<p>My wash and fold order, which would have cost me around $6 to do myself in the coin-operated laundry machines in my building, ran me $28 (including a delivery fee). That was probably two weeks' worth of laundry. I'm sure some people would pay $14 a week for the service.</p>
<p>I'm fortunate because I have a washer and dryer in my building. A lot of my colleagues who use laundromats might pay extra just to avoid the hassle of dragging their clothes around and being stuck away from home with little else to do.</p>
<p>Washio is only available in a few cities so far: <span>San Francisco, Oakland, Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington DC, and Boston. If you live in one of those places, and have more money than time to spend, Washio is worth a look. Otherwise, you can always catch up on your reading at the laundromat. </span></p>
