<ul><li>A married woman’s employability is linked to a mother-in-law’s employment status, husband’s salary and so on, as per a new report.</li><li>For underprivileged <keyword id="121387" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rural-women" source="Orion">rural women</keyword>, there is no marriage and motherhood penalty when it comes to employment.</li><li>Most such women, however, turn into contributing family workers in agriculture and work for subsistence.</li><li>In districts where women have high paid jobs, there are also more cases of domestic violence. </li></ul>One generation leads the other and that’s true in the case of women and their employment status in India. An unemployed mother-in-law can bring down the employability of a married woman and vice-versa, according to the ‘State of Working India 2023’ report by <keyword id="125797" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="azim-premji-university" source="Orion">Azim Premji University</keyword>. Proving that there is an inter-generational effect on gender norms, the report says that a married woman living in a household with an unemployed mother-in-law is less likely to be employed — 20% less likelihood in urban areas, and 30% in rural areas. This is in comparison to households without a mother-in-law. “However, if the mother-in-law was present and employed herself, this is associated with a higher likelihood of women’s participation to the extent of 50% (rural) to 70% (urban) more than households with no mother-in-law present,” the report released on Wednesday said. The husband and his earnings The story of women and employment in India is far from a straight line – many factors including marital status, economic status and motherhood – all have a direct impact on it. For married women especially, the husband’s salary is seen to have a direct impact. The report finds that husband’s income has a U-shaped effect on women’s employability. “A common gender norm is the “male breadwinner” norm, i.e. husbands are considered the primary earners with wives contributing to household income only if necessary,” the report says. In households where the husband’s earnings are high, the probability of the wife being employed is low, controlling for individual and household factors. But it’s not a straight line. After the husband's salary crosses ₹40,000 per month, women’s employability increases, especially in urban areas. “This U-shaped pattern could result from a change in norms with rising incomes or it could also be due to the fact that such husbands are matched with higher educated wives who have preferences as well as opportunities to access better paid work,” the report says. What’s the price of a job? In the case of rural women, marriage and motherhood only improves their employment. However, that’s associated with the fact that they turn into contributing family workers in agricultural work or find or find self-employment. “Thus, for women in the informal economy, rather than a marriage or motherhood penalty for employment, we find the reverse. But the absence of a penalty may not be a positive outcome since it likely reflects a compulsion to work for subsistence,” says the report. But are women happier with more employability? There is no straight answer for this question as well because there is data to show that districts that report high rates of working women also show women saying that they make their own healthcare decisions, own large assets or meet relatives. Yet, independence comes with a painful price for working women – as districts with higher percentages of women with paid working jobs also report higher domestic violence. “The suggested mechanism is that working women are more likely to face partner violence due to challenging of established gender norms,” the report says.

But young guns like Kamath brothers of Zerodha too are charting their own path by bringing in personal wealth and new causes like climate and sustainability, as per EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2023. Nadar retained his title as the most generous billionaire in India. He and Premji are only two billionaires who donated over ₹1,000 crore in FY23. Most of Nadar’s philanthropic endeavours, who gave away ₹5.6 crore per day, are centred around arts and culture. In fact, Nadar’s generosity is more than that of eight of his counterparts put together in the top 10 list, that includes India’s richest man, Mukesh Ambani. Premji is India’s second most generous man and his contributions went by 267% as compared to last year. “This is attributed to a significant 400% rise in dividend payouts by Wipro in FY23. An innovative strategy employed by Premji enables the trusts to benefit monetarily from the shares, while Premji retains the voting rights,” says Hurun. India’s richest man’s philanthropic outgo falls Mukesh Ambani is the third more generous man in India as he donated ₹376 crore in 2023, but his outgo fell by 8% as compared to last year. Meanwhile, Gautam Adani has seen huge wealth destruction in 2023 and conceded the richest man in India tag to Ambani. Yet, his generosity expanded. He is India’s fifth most generous man, donating ₹285 crore – and his philanthropic outgo went up by 50% since last year. He also moved up two places in the top ten list. Bajaj family also expanded its hearts and wallets — by 234%, to debut on the list this year. Cumulatively the top 10 philanthropists in India, donated ₹5,806 crore in FY23, as against a combined donation of ₹3,034 crore the year before. Apart from <keyword id="310580" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nandan-nilekeni" source="Orion">Nandan Nilekeni</keyword>, his wife <keyword id="5830274" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rohini-nilekeni" source="Orion">Rohini Nilekeni</keyword> also made it to the top 10 and their cause is also unique — ecosystem building. The list compiled 119 who donated over ₹5 crore in FY23, with 25 new entrants. They cumulatively donated ₹8,445 crore – up 59% compared to last year, and 200% compared to three years back. “Wealth creation is important for economic development, while philanthropy is equally important for economic prosperity. This year is a record year for big philanthropy. Given India's potential for wealth creation and assuming a continued commitment to philanthropy by billionaires, I anticipate these figures to potentially double over the next five years,” said Anas Rahman Junaid, MD and chief researcher, Hurun India. In the past five years, the number of donors contributing over ₹100 crore has surged from two to 14, and those donating over ₹50 crore has risen from five to 24. ‘personally generous’ The list has 24 people who donated in their personal capacity – and it has the usual suspects like Nadar, Premji and Nilekenis. But it has surprises too. Zerodha’s Nithin Kamath and Nikhil Kamath donated over ₹110 crore in their personal capacity with most of these funds going towards climate and sustainability. At 44 and 37 respectively, they’re also one of the youngest in the list. Manipal’s Ranjan Pai who is 50 years old donated 92 crore, towards education. The average age of India’s most generous philanthropists remains 60. Pai’s allocation went up 512% in the last one year. The other notable names amongst who donated their personal wealth are — A M Naik of L&amp;T who donated ₹150 crore; Sushmita and <keyword id="56651" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="subroto-bagchi" source="Orion">Subroto Bagchi</keyword> of Mindtree and Infosys’ Kris Gopalakrishnan and family. M A Yusuf Ali of Lulu Group also donated more in their personal capacity, and his allocation went up by 350% in FY23. “Cumulative personal donations have increased by 60% to reach ₹4,958 crore, constituting 70% of the total donations in the list. I am incredibly enthusiastic about the surge in personal philanthropy in India,” Junaid. In general, companies are also spending more as a part of corporate social responsibility (CSR). CSR spending of BSE 200 companies has been growing at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 15% in the last nine years. Their cumulative CSR spend grew from ₹5,561 crore FY15 to ₹12,271 crore in FY23. “Government, civil society, and the corporate are the three distinct pillars sustaining the nation-building process. CSR is moving away from cheque book charity donations to a more long-term strategic engagement,” Hurun says.

Shiv Nadar is India’s most generous billionaire but young guns have their hearts in the right place

<ul><li><keyword id="111343" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="gautam-adani" source="Orion">Gautam Adani</keyword>, India’s richest man, has pledged to donate ₹60,000 crore towards charity. </li><li>The charitable efforts will be under the trusteeship of the <keyword id="2542614" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="adani-foundation" source="Orion">Adani Foundation</keyword>, and the group says it will enlist sectoral experts to take its efforts forward. </li><li><keyword id="6419840" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="azim-premji" source="Orion">Azim Premji</keyword>, one of the most philanthropic persons in India, praised <keyword id="76451" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="adani" source="Orion">Adani</keyword> for his efforts. </li></ul>Gautam Adani, the richest Indian man, has pledged ₹60,000 crore towards charity. That’s a tenth of his total net worth. This pledge was made on Adani’s 60th birthday, and will be used for a range of social causes. The group said that the corpus will be used towards healthcare, education and skill development – all of which are tax-deductible. The Adani Foundation will be holding this corpus as a trustee, and is likely to be partly funded by transferring the stake of promoters in the seven listed companies of the Adani group. According to Bloomberg Billionaires Index and Forbes, Gautam Adani’s networth is around $93-95 billion. Adani received praise from Azim Premji, the founder chairman of Wipro and the Czar of Indian IT. A noted philanthropist himself, Premji praised Adani for pledging his wealth at the “peak of business success”, pointing at the substantial contribution to charity by the Adani group. “The challenges and possibilities of our country demand that we work together as one, cutting across all divides of wealth, region, religion, caste, and more. I wish Gautam Adani and his Foundation the very best in this important national endeavour,” Premji added. Philanthropy is an effort to help and support social welfare causes by way of donations – in money and kind. It also made a dent into his personal wealth over the year, in spite of being the head of one of India’s largest IT companies, Wipro. For comparison, in 2021, HCL Tech’s Shiv Nadar donated ₹1,263 crore while Mukesh Ambani donated ₹577 crore. Gautam Adani could follow in the footsteps of Premji in his philanthropy efforts, stated a report by the <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/company/corporate-trends/adani-family-pledges-60000-crore-towards-charity/articleshow/92422992.cms">Economic Times</a>, quoting an unnamed source, without going into detail as to how exactly this will be done. Gautam Adani gives a tenth of his networth to charity, Azim Premji is impressed

Software giant <keyword id="6354512" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="infosys" source="Orion">Infosys</keyword> softening its stand on <keyword id="64527" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="moonlighting" source="Orion">moonlighting</keyword> has allowed its staffers to take up external work with prior permission, sources stated on Friday. The company has intimated to the employees its new policy through email. The email from the company states that any employee, who wishes to take up gig work, may do so, with the prior consent of their manager and <keyword id="15318360" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bp-hr" source="Orion">BP-HR</keyword>, and in their personal time, for establishments that don't compete with Infosys or Infosys' clients. The corporate world has been discussing moonlighting for quite some time. Techies working for other companies has become a trend and concern in the industry with startups readily offering very attractive offers to utilize the skills of the talent working for other companies. <keyword id="197349" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rishad-premji" source="Orion">Rishad Premji</keyword>, the Chairman of <keyword id="10862" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="wipro" source="Orion">Wipro</keyword> repeatedly issued statements against moonlighting and had also asked the startups not to only focus on immediate fortune. The company had earlier announced the firing of hundreds of employees for integrity issues. Rishad Premji also shared how an employee in an important position was shown the doors for lack of integrity and later the company did not give him a clean relieving letter. He also shared that it did not take more than 10 minutes to fire 20 staffers of higher positions who showed a lack of integrity. The insiders in Infosys stated that the step would help the company to find solutions for many challenges that are being faced presently. The decision would help the employee to carry out the work of his or her choice. The step by Infosys will draw sharp criticism and set a new trend in the corporate world, experts say. Infosys to now allow moonlighting with prior permission, say sources

However, analysts at JP Morgan are speaking a different tune, saying that the growth outlook looks worse due to rising margin headwinds amid a macro slowdown. “Indian IT growth was accelerating till 3Q22 and has begun to slow down from 4Q22, which is likely to worsen into FY23 amid a worsening macro. With peak sector growth behind, growth deceleration should continue to weigh on sector multiples,” the firm said in a recent note. Kotak Institutional Equities, on the other hand, pins the blame in the IT sector meltdown on the economic recession, instead of rising risk to margins. While we’ve seen a near unstoppable bull run in the Indian IT sector since the pandemic broke out, probably now is the time to be cautious. Azim Premji and Shiv Nadar lose $20 billion of their personal wealth – thanks to the Great Indian IT meltdown

With an annual contribution of ₹1,161 crore in fiscal 2022, Shiv Nadar has displaced Wipro’s Azim Premji as the most generous Indian, according to the EdelGive <keyword id="3606268" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hurun-india-philanthropy-list" source="Orion">Hurun India Philanthropy List</keyword> 2022. The top 10 list cumulatively donated ₹3,378 crore in FY22, as against a combined donation of ₹12,785 crore last year. The good news is that the list has seen 19 new additions, with total donations by these new entrants adding up to ₹832 crore. Also, six women have featured on the list this year. The youngest philanthropist on the list is 36-year-old Nikhil Kamath of Zerodha. Clearly, the young entrepreneurs are beginning their philanthropic journey early on unlike many others from corporate India. Nadar’s philanthropic efforts have mainly focussed on education. Overall, contributions towards philanthropy have fallen in FY22 because of the pandemic impact. Nadar’s donation too is down 8% in the fiscal year 2021-22, as per the list. Wipro’s Azim Premji slipped to the second spot with an annual donation of ₹484 crore as his contribution towards philanthropy has fallen by 95% year-on-year due to the exceptional share buy-back in 2021, says the report. Billionaire <keyword id="3820" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mukesh-ambani" source="Orion">Mukesh Ambani</keyword>, the chairman of Reliance Industries, is third on the list with contributions totalling ₹411 crore. Ambani’s contribution fell 29% compared to last year. Kumar Mangalam Birla was fourth on the list with a contribution of ₹242 crore. Couples Susmita &amp; Subroto Bagchi and Radha &amp; NS Parthasarathy from Mindtree’s management debuted on the list with a combined donation of ₹426 crore to the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and also entered the top 10 and were ranked fifth. Both Subroto and Parthasarathy are co-founders of Mindtree. With a donation of ₹190 crore, <keyword id="111343" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gautam-adani" source="Orion">Gautam Adani</keyword> &amp; family ranks seventh on the EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2022. Next in line is Anil Agarwal &amp; family of Vedanta whose contribution increased by 27% from last year to ₹165 crore. Nandan Nilekani and his wife Rohini Nilekani are ranked ninth and eleventh, respectively, in the list and are active philanthropists. Larsen &amp; Toubro’s group executive chairman AM Naik is ranked tenth with a donation of ₹142 crore in FY22. While many billionaires of the past have turned generous later in life, some new-age tech entrepreneurs are giving away much earlier. <keyword id="1430802" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nithin-kamath" source="Orion">Nithin Kamath</keyword> and Nikhil Kamath of Zerodha increased their donation by a whopping 300% to ₹100 crore during the year. At 36 years, Nikhil Kamath is the youngest philanthropist on the Hurun list. Another surprise entrant this year has been Rakesh Gangwal, the co-promoter of InterGlobe Aviation (company that owns Indigo Airlines). Gangwal debuted this year with a personal contribution of ₹100 crore to the School of Medical Sciences and Technology at IIT, Kanpur. “EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List aims at chronicling the Indian philanthropy landscape and so far the transformation is encouraging. For instance, over the last 5 years, (the) number of donors who have given more than ₹100 crore have grown from 2 to 15, and over ₹50 crore have grown from 5 to 20. Infosys too cracks whip but mulling policy to allow moonlighting

Amid the brouhaha over moonlighting in India, Cloud Major <keyword id="10875" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="ibm" source="Orion">IBM</keyword> on Wednesday made it clear that the practice is not ethical and the company does not promote such behaviour at workplace. <keyword id="1342992" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sandip-patel" source="Orion">Sandip Patel</keyword>, Managing Director, IBM India, said that the company's position is exactly that of the overall industry in the country. "All of our workers when they are employed, they sign an agreement which says that they are going to be working full-time for IBM. So moonlighting is not ethically right for them to get into," he told reporters here. "That's our position now and you've already heard the industry position," he added. Moonlighting allows employees to work outside their primary working hours. Some startups and unicorns like <keyword id="6358977" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="swiggy" source="Orion">Swiggy</keyword> have encouraged the practice, while most of the traditional companies are calling it cheating. <keyword id="6354512" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="infosys" source="Orion">Infosys</keyword> has warned employees against moonlighting, saying that involvement in such practice can result in "disciplinary action including termination of employment". The case was registered after the Chennai-based non-governmental organisation (NGO) India Awake for Transparency accused them of illegally transferring funds from 3 different companies to a new company. “The issue is limited to amalgamation, your lords,” senior advocate AM Singhvi representing Azim Premji told the bench headed by SK Kaul. According to him, the allegations made in the complaints, even if they are taken at their face value and accepted in their entirety, do not prima facie constitute any offences or make out a case. Allegations of financial fraud against Azim Premji Premji, the IT czar of India, is generally lauded for being the man <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/azim-premji-gives-more-the-charity-than-his-net-worth/articleshow/71306177.cms">who gave away half of his net worth to charity. </a> However, India Awake for Transparency accused Premji of siphoning away ₹13,602 crores from three shadow banks — Napean Trading &amp; Investment Company, Vidya Investment &amp; Trading Company, and Regal Investments &amp; Trading Company — in the form of gifts between 2010 and 2012. The three companies were eventually merged into a fourth privately-owned trust called Hasham Investment and Trading Company. This gave the accused control over the remaining assets of the company worth ₹31,342 crore and it’s been losing money ever since. According to the plea, filed by a businessman in Bangalore, these actions violate several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Prevention of Corruption Act. Had he not done so, Azim Premji could have very well been the second richest man in the country following Mukesh Ambani. He was one of the first Indians to sign up for The Giving Pledge led by Warren Buffer and Microsoft founder Bill Gates. According to him, simply being rich ‘did not thrill’ him. For his work, he has also been honored with the Padma Vibhushan, which is one of the highest honours in India, for his contribution to the IT industry.
