The duo will be working together to find Pratilipi stories that can be translated into globally successful gaming franchises. The latest funding would allow Pratilipi to strengthen its intellectual property (IP) acquisition and development across different formats ranging from audio books to games. The company’s existing investors Omidyar and Network India also participated in the round, along with a host of entrepreneurs such as Unacademy’s founders Gaurav Munjal and Hemesh Singh, Locus’s Nishith Rastogi, Delhivery’s Sahil Barua and Meesho’s Vidit Aatrey. “With Pratilipi already having a multilingual platform for online literature, it is poised to become one of the strongest players in emerging markets in the future. Krafton believes in long term potential of local Indian IPs that can be successful not just in India, but globally as well across formats including literature, comics and gaming and our investment in Pratilipi is another step in realising that vision,” Sean Hyunil Sohn, head of Krafton’s India division. Last year, Krafton had announced its plans to invest $100 million in Indian startups to cultivate the local video game, esports, entertainment, and IT industries. Since then, it has invested <a href="https://www.businesstoday.in/latest/corporate/story/mumbais-loco-gets-9-million-funding-pubg-parent-krafton-among-investors-299856-2021-06-28">$9 million</a> in Loco, <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/esports-firm-nodwin-gaming-raises-164-cr-of-equity-investment-from-south-korean-gaming-firm-krafton-1030161588">$22.5 million</a> in Nodwin and now led a $48 million round in Pratilipi. Udyam’s Mekin Maheshwari, NoBroker’s Amit Agarwal and Pratilipi’s chief executive Ranjeet Pratap Singh also invested an undisclosed amount in the company in their personal capacity. Avendus Capital acted as the exclusive financial advisor to Pratilipi on this transaction. Pratilipi was founded by Prashant Gupta, Sahradayi Modi, Rahul Ranjan, Sankaranarayanan Devarajan and Singh in 2015. It had started off as an online reading-writing platform and has launched two new products over the years — <keyword id="11642607" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="pratilipi-fm">Pratilipi FM</keyword> for audio based storytelling and <keyword id="11637893" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="pratilipi-comics">Pratilipi Comics</keyword> for in-house comic series. It has also acquired two startups -- IVM Podcast and The Writer Order to expand its presence. The Bengaluru-based startup has over 370,000 writers on the platform and 30 million monthly active readers in 12 Indian languages. The platform claims to have about 5 million stories which have been read over 5 billion times. Pratilipi has raised $78.8 million to date, with ₹76 crore ($10 million) coming in from the Series C round raised in April 2020. The company’s list of investors also includes Tencent, Shunwei Capital, Bennett Coleman and Co Ltd, Nexus Venture Partners and others. PUBG developer Krafton is going to help Indian storytelling platform Pratilipi to turn a few stories into games

Krafton said it priced its shares at 498,000 won each at the upper end of the range announced earlier this month. The listing, scheduled for August 10, is expected to be one of the largest ever on the local bourse. <keyword id="522309" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Samsung-Life-Insurance">Samsung Life Insurance</keyword> holds the record for its 4.89 trillion won IPO in 2010, reports Yonhap news agency. While Krafton had initially sought to raise up to a record 5.6 trillion won, it lowered its pricing band after financial authorities requested revisions to its plan amid controversy of overvaluation. Krafton has downplayed overvaluation concerns, with the company saying in an online press conference that it is among a few players in the local tech and entertainment industry to hold a significant presence in the global market. The video game maker has sold over 75 million copies of PUBG for PCs and consoles globally since its launch in 2017. The mobile version of the battle royale shooter, in which players fight each other until the last survivor, has reached 1 billion downloads globally, excluding China. Krafton is eyeing active mergers and acquisitions after going public, with plans to spend 70 percent of the funds secured from the IPO in acquiring promising game developers. PUBG developer Krafton to raise $3.7 billion through IPO next month

<ul><li>Krafton, the developer of battle royale game PUBG, has raised $3.75 billion via an initial public offering (IPO). </li><li>However, it made a weak debut on the Korean stock exchange, tumbling 20% before staging a recovery. </li><li>Analysts suggest an ‘expensive valuation’ and Chinese regulatory concerns might have played a role in the weak debut. </li></ul>Krafton Inc., the maker of the popular battle royale game PUBG, tumbled 20% after debuting on the Korean Stock Exchange. At the time of writing this story, Krafton’s shares were down by nearly 3%, staging a recovery after the initial shock. Analysts attributed the decline to an ‘expensive valuation’ and the China regulation risks, stated a <a href="https://www.reuters.com/technology/skoreas-krafton-maker-hit-game-pubg-tumbles-debut-2021-08-10/">Reuters report</a>. To recall, Krafton’s $3.8 billion initial public offering (IPO) was subscribed 243 times, making it the largest IPO in South Korea since Samsung Life Insurance in 2010. “There might be a question mark whether Krafton can well create movies, short films or animation but we must expand into other various media products because that is what customers want and where the media environments are headed to,” Chang Byung-Gyu, the founder and chairman of Krafton, said at an online press briefing on Tuesday. Krafton derives much of its revenue from the battle royale game PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds – also known as PUBG. Some <a href="https://www.marketwatch.com/story/krafton-shares-tumble-in-south-korea-debut-271628561864">reports</a> suggest that the game accounts for nearly 97% of the company’s sales. It had to revise its issue price after regulators in South Korea said the valuation was too high, resulting in a cut of nearly 25%. At the current market price (as at 11:15 a.m.) of 434,500 Korean Won (approx. $378), Krafton’s valuation stands at over $20.5 billion. According to analyst <a href="https://www.reuters.com/technology/skoreas-krafton-maker-hit-game-pubg-tumbles-debut-2021-08-10/">estimates</a>, a large part of Krafton’s revenue is derived from sales in China, handled by Tencent. The crackdown by Chinese regulators could have had an impact on Krafton’s stock market debut. “China has already made noises about (Tencent's) 'Honor of Kings' ... If they also request changes for 'Peacekeeper Elite' that would be a negative and could be a very large negative,” according to a report by Reuters, quoting LightStream Research analyst Mio Kato. PUBG maker Krafton’s shares tumble 20% after listing debut, analysts blame ‘expensive valuation’

South Korean video game company <keyword id="10155974" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="krafton" source="Orion">Krafton</keyword> on Tuesday announced that Indian players will be able to qualify for the official esports programme of the <keyword id="84384" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="asian-games" source="Orion">Asian Games</keyword>, 2022, via <keyword id="11197652" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="battlegrounds-mobile-india" source="Orion">Battlegrounds Mobile India</keyword> (BGMI). This will allow Indian gamers the privilege and opportunity to compete at the event for medals. The games will run from September 10 to September 25, 2022, with competitors from across Asia competing for the medals. "BGMI's inclusion in the esports games bouquet exemplifies Krafton's commitment to developing esports ecosystem globally and in India. Krafton has been investing heavily in the development of Indian gaming, esports, and IT entertainment industries with the establishment of its Indian office," the company said in a statement. "The company invested a total of $70 million this year in the Indian IT sector including the leading Indian esports company Nodwin Gaming, the game streaming platform Loco and India's No.1 web novel platform Pratilipi," it added. The Asian Games is a multi-sport event that's held every four years, in which Asia's best athletes compete. The event is recognised by the International Olympic Committee as the second-largest event of its kind, behind only the Olympics. The Asian Games first paved the way for esports representation with its inclusion as a demonstration sport in 2018. In 2020 and now 2022, esports is part of the official programme and a medalled event. The government of India had submitted 128 requests, making up for 35% of such legal requests in the same time frame. India was followed by Turkey, Pakistan and Russia. Overall, Twitter had received over 38,500 legal demands in the second half of 2020, specifying 131.9 Lakh accounts. Japan was the top requester, with 43% (16,600) of all global requests received. India was next in line with about 7,000 demands, making up for 18% of the total legal demands received by the platform. 94% of the total global volume of legal demands originated from only five countries — Japan, India, Russia, Turkey and South Korea. Twitter shared these insights in its transparency report for the second half of the 2020, between July and December. The <keyword id="44734" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Government">Indian government</keyword> has also pitched itself as the frontrunner in issuing the most number of information requisitions on Twitter. The country has issued 3,600 information requests, of the total 14,561 such information requests Twitter received. It was followed by the United States, Japan and France in this criteria. Even though India took a lead in these information requests in the second half of 2020. The US was the top demander of user information in the first half of last year. Overall, In 2020, between January to December, the US had issued the most number of information requests. Indian government issued Twitter 128 takedown requests against journalists and news organisations

Shares of Just Dial were up nearly 3% on July 15 to ₹1,115 as of 9:30 a.m. India’s richest man Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries (RIL) is looking to acquire the 25 year old local search company for $800-$900 (₹5,957 crore-6,702 crore), said a report by <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/services/retail/reliance-calls-8888888888-to-buy-justdial/articleshow/84428212.cms">The Economic Times</a> (ET) on July 15. Just Dial Limited provides local search for different services in India over the phone, website and mobile apps. RIL’s retail business is said to leverage on the strong database of Just Dial. Reliance is the largest organised retailer in the country while Just Dial is the market leader in the local search engine segment with nearly 150 million average quarterly unique visitors across multiple platforms like mobile, apps, website and a telephone hotline, according to a report by ET. Just Dial’s has called for a board meeting on Friday, July 16, to evaluate fundraising proposals, said the report by ET. Currently, managing director of Just Dial VSS Mani and family controls 35.5% of the company, which is valued at ₹2,387.9 crore. “Reliance is planning to buy partially from [VSS] Mani and would trigger an open offer for an additional 26% of the company’s equity which at current prices could lead to a ₹4,102 crore pay out, at current share prices. If the open offer is fully subscribed to, Reliance will end up with over 60% stake with Mani staying on as a junior partner to run the operations and ride the future upside. The deal will also see a primary infusion of capital into the company by Reliance,” added the sources mentioned by ET. Later in the day, RIL released a statement on the bourses stating they are "unable to comment on media speculation and rumours." Shares of Just Dial have gained 94% since January 2020. At 10:59 a.m., on July 15, shares of the company were trading at ₹1,093.75. <ul><li><keyword id="205081" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Meru">Meru</keyword> alleged that <keyword id="1042120" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uber">Uber</keyword> had adopted certain abusive practices to oust its competitors from the market. </li><li><keyword id="47183" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="CCI">CCI</keyword> has observed that Uber is not in the dominant position as Ola too has a strong presence here. </li><li>Meru had previously alleged that Ola was the dominant player, which CCI had closed as Uber was a “stronger player”.</li></ul>India’s antitrust watchdog the <keyword id="97393" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Competition-Commission-of-India">Competition Commission of India</keyword> (CCI) has rejected radio taxi service Meru’s plea alleging that cab hailing app Uber abused its dominant position in the Indian ride hailing market. Meru had alleged that US-based Uber, owing to its dominant position, had adopted certain abusive practices to oust its competitors from the market. These practices included offering unreasonable discounts to the customers leading to low/predatory prices, employing incentive policies that were not economically justified. Meru noted that these incentive policies were aimed at exclusively engaging the drivers to its network so as to exclude its competitors from having access to such drivers. CCI, in its order dated July 14, 2021, has observed that Uber is not in the dominant position in the Indian ride hailing segment, as Bengaluru-based Ola too exists in the market. Back in 2015, Meru had alleged that Ola was the dominant player in the market, which CCI had closed as Uber was a “stronger player”. “And in the facts of that case [Meru’s plea against Ola in 2015], the <keyword id="6355822" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="commission">Commission</keyword> was of the view that despite Ola having the largest network, the network effects were not strong enough to deter entry and rapid expansion of another big competitor ‘Uber’ who was competing fiercely with Ola in the relevant market of ‘radio taxi services in <keyword id="6354321" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bengaluru">Bengaluru</keyword>’,” CCI said, in its notice of July 14. The director general (DG) was looking into Meru’s plea against Uber’s dominance in the Indian market and has given a similar finding (submitted in February 2020). Though Meru has said this finding is contradictory to the earlier order on Ola, but CCI has found no such infirmity. The DG has found traces of predatory pricing structure in the case of Uber as evident through its losses between 2014-2018. However, it has also found similar trends in the case of both Ola and Meru. “This shows that the aggressive pricing strategy adopted by Uber was in order to compete aggressively for the market (just like its closest competitor Ola) and to build its network,” CCI has maintained. The investigation also revealed that the discounts and incentives have gradually declined over time with a positive per trip margin recorded by Uber since October 2017. India’s antitrust watchdog rejects radio taxi Meru’s plea against Uber, says there is an 'ever-expanding pool of drivers' available
