The shares of television channel company New Delhi Television Ltd (<keyword id="6420486" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="ndtv" source="Orion">NDTV</keyword>) on Wednesday hit the upper circuit at the bourses with the change of guard at the promoter's holding company <keyword id="7773953" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="rrpr-holding" source="Orion">RRPR Holding</keyword> Private Ltd. At the <keyword id="35140" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="bse" source="Orion">BSE</keyword>, the NDTV scrip opened at Rs 447.70 (upper limit) after closing at Rs 426.40 on Tuesday. With the Adani group acquiring a 99.5 per cent stake in RRPR Holding, the latter's original promoters <keyword id="360054" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="prannoy-roy" source="Orion">Prannoy Roy</keyword> and <keyword id="213943" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="radhika-roy" source="Orion">Radhika Roy</keyword> resigned as Directors, the NDTV said on Tuesday. The company also said it was informed by the promoter group vehicle RRPR Holding that the latter's board approved the appointment of Sudipta Bhattacharya, Sanjay Pugalia and Senthil Sinniah Chengalvarayan as Directors with immediate effect. The RRPR Holding owns a 29.18 per cent stake in NDTV, which has three national television channels. The Adani group has also made an open offer to acquire an additional 26 per cent stake in NDTV at a price Rs 294 per share. <ul><li>The voter turnout among women may surpass that of men in the Parliamentary elections scheduled this summer. </li><li>A new book ‘The Verdict’ authored by veteran journalist Prannoy Roy and election researcher Dorab Sopariwala documents the sharp rise in <keyword id="7424892" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="women-voter-turnout">women voter turnout</keyword> in recent years </li><li>Some regional parties are already nominating a significantly higher number of women for the Parliamentary elections scheduled this summer.</li></ul>India’s much-celebrated democracy has strikingly left women under-represented as well as disenfranchised for decades but the wave may now be turning. “In 1962, women’s turnout was 15% lower than men’s turnout; but by 2014 women’s turnout had almost reached parity with men, short by only 1.5%,” according to book called ‘The Verdict’, authored by veteran Indian journalist Prannoy Roy and election researcher Dorab Sopariwala.

 Despite the spectacular rise, Roy and Sopariwala estimate 21 million women did not get their right to vote in 2014 because they were not registered. Jammu and Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar ranked the worst for women turnout; West Bengal, Assam, and Odisha aside from smaller states like Lakshadweep, Nagaland, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli were among the best. The good news is that the turnout has only got better since 2014. The proportion of women who stepped out to vote surpassed that of men in the assembly elections held in 2017 and 2018. It was as high as 70% for women in the last two years, compared to 43% among men, the chapter noted. The six states that went to polls in the last two years were Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. Some parties have already woken up to the reality. Ruling parties in two states- West Bengal and Odisha- have already declared that they will field significantly higher number of women candidates than in the past for the upcoming elections for the Lok Sabha, the lower house of Indian Parliament. Possible impact Roy and Sopariwala look back at data from the 2014 elections and arrive at a hypothetical conclusion on how the rise in voting women may change the electoral math. In 2014, the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by the Bharatiya Janata Party had a lead of 9% among women voters, compared to a lead of 19% among men. Therefore, if only women had voted in 2014 elections -- without changing the parties they voted for -- the winning NDA would have ended up with 265 seats, seven short of majority. And if only men had voted, the NDA would have swept the election with 376 seats.

India exit poll results 2019: All surveys predict a full majority for Narendra Modi-led NDA

However, the success rate in estimating the number of seats that the winning side may bag is as low as 62%, according to data compiled by veteran journalist Prannoy Roy and election researcher Dorab Sopariwala in their new book 'The Verdict'. And in nearly three-fourths of all elections -- Parliament and state-- the pollsters have sided with caution and underestimated the winner's final tally. For the upcoming elections in 2019, opinion polls, so far, have unanimously projected a comfortable lead for the incumbent National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to which Prime Minister Narendra Modi belongs. The alliance is likely to get more seats than any other rival, but pollsters are divided on whether it will be able to secure a majority like it did in 2014.  The rise in number of seats in favour of the NDA is in sync with the broad <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/post-pulwama-pm-narendra-modis-ratings-rise-by-7-to-52-poll/articleshow/68350217.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">consensus</a> that the Modi government benefited from the recent escalation of tensions with Pakistan. He has definitely used the spotlight on him to garner as many votes as possible by riling up nationalist sentiments and portraying himself as a strong leader who is not afraid of combat. The projected margin of seats above the half-way mark is still just four. The average under-estimation of the winning party by pollsters in Parliamentary election is about 8%, according to Roy and Sopariwala. If that were to be true in the upcoming elections, the NDA may even land up with 298 seats. Now, a number that high may trigger scepticism. While the nationalist fervour in India may help Modi, past <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/will-air-strikes-help-narendra-modi-this-is-how-wars-have-impacted-govts/articleshow/68374595.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">experience</a> shows that such conflicts with Pakistan have not led to decisive electoral gains. The BJP won only 23.75% of the votes cast after the Kargil conflict with Pakistan in 1999, whereas in 2014, when there was no semblance of a war, the party bagged 31.3% of the votes. Further, the Modi government has lost a lot of support since the sweeping win in 2014 due to a variety of reasons. A flagging <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/beyond-india-latest-gdp-data-the-real-cues-about-the-economy/articleshow/68179264.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">economy</a> and lack of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/a-hidden-jobs-survey-in-india-casts-doubt-on-data-integrity-under-narendra-modi-government/articleshow/67750383.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">jobs</a>, the government's alleged <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/108-economists-and-academics-just-asked-the-indian-government-to-stop-interfering-with-economic-data/articleshow/68420732.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">attempts</a> to dress-up economic data, ill-advised <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/indias-government-wants-you-to-believe-that-demonetisation-didnt-slow-down-the-economy/articleshow/67785050.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">demonetisation</a>, persistent <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/indias-rural-distress-just-went-from-bad-to-worse/articleshow/67431091.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">farm distress</a>, and rise in <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/violence-cost-indias-economy-9-of-its-gdp-last-year/articleshow/64635460.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">communal polarisation and violence</a> among other issues have dented the government's chances. This was clearly visible in the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/here-are-some-reasons-why-indias-ruling-party-lost-to-its-main-rival-in-three-very-important-state-elections/articleshow/67057122.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">state election results</a> that were held in the closing months of 2018. The swing in voter sentiment in a smaller region tended to be duplicated around the country, British social scientist Sir David Butler explained in the foreword to Roy and Sopariwala's book. That would explain the sharp fall in the projected number of seats to the NDA in 2019 compared to the 336 it scored in 2014. Indeed, Modi's popularity is a shadow of its past while his rivals are on an upswing but, if pollsters are to be believed, the incumbents are still comfortably ahead of the others. On the other side, hectic parleys are underway between opposition parties to eke out a <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/politics-and-nation/lok-sabha-polls-2019-will-it-be-mahagathbandhan-or-multiple-gathbandhans-of-opposition-parties/videoshow/68376009.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">winning combination</a>. In India, an election is as much a numbers game as it is about ideology. Political expediency, caste, region and religion-based affiliations can often turn out to be the deciding factors. The game is far from over. There will be more surveys and polls in the days to come and we will be watching. Is India's 2019 election really a foregone conclusion?

<ul><li>In 2014, exit polls predicted a Modi wave but missed the number of seats by a wide margin. </li><li>Pollsters faced much embarrassment in 2004 when they predicted an NDA win after a successful ‘India Shining’ campaign. </li><li>In 2009 too, pollsters predicted a Congress win, but missed out the number of seats by a large margin.</li></ul>Exit polls have gone wrong many times. They have been right too, but historically they have been playing safe, even when they were right. In 2014, exit polls had predicted a Modi wave. They were right, yet they missed the number by around 40 more seats as Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came into power. Exit polls arrive at their predictions after visiting constituencies, interviewing voters and collating data from samples. Currently, exit polls are conducted in India by India Today/CSDS (Centre for the Study of Developing Societies), AC Nielsen/Outlook etc. Hit and miss Pollsters faced much embarrassment in 2004 when they predicted an NDA win after the BJP’s ‘India Shining’ campaign. But, the country chose UPA instead. In 2009 too, pollsters got it right in pegging a win for the Congress but missed out the number of seats by a large margin. In 2019, the odds are once again stacked in the incumbent NDA’s favour. Even the stock markets rallied hard on the last trading before the exit polls. After 2004 Election results were announced, Indian stock markets crashed to hit their first ever<a href="https://www.rediff.com/money/2006/may/18spec.htm"> lower circuit</a>, worried about the systemic change. Back then, UPA had not even announced the Prime Ministerial candidate. When Manmohan Singh retained power in 2009, it was a pleasant surprise for the stock market. The thumping majority and stability was cheered by traders so much that the market hit upper circuit not once, but twice. And, trading was suspended for the day! Fractures versus landslides Exit pollsters were spot on in 1996, when they predicted a fractured mandate, and it was to be, leading to extended political crisis. As polling veteran Prannoy Roy says in his book, ‘The Verdict’, it is much easier for pollsters to predict landslides, than close contests. But theoretically, only. To publicly foretell a landslide victory would mean that the agency or a media house will have to stick their neck out and risk embarrassment in case they go wrong, according to an<a href="https://www.firstpost.com/india/in-prannoy-roys-book-on-indias-electoral-history-a-look-at-why-landslides-can-be-tricky-for-pollsters-to-correctly-forecast-6400641.html"> excerpt of his book</a>. This is probably why pollsters played it safe last elections and the one before and never uttered the forbidden word ‘landslide’ even if it was to be. A landslide or a clean sweep is where the winning party wins twice as many seats than the second largest party. Things probably would change if AI (Artificial Intelligence) were the one to poll and tell like<a href="https://www.geospatialworld.net/article/artificial-intelligence-system-mogia/"> in the US</a>. Exit polls 2019: The predictions can get the winner right but not the seats

If the Indian army brought laurels to the country by doing a great job in spearheading the relief work for earthquake struck Nepal, the <keyword id="94534" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-media">Indian media</keyword> has actually done a disservice to the nation by permanently denting India’s image in the global arena. 
	 
	Otherwise, what else can justify the rapid popularity of #GoHomeIndiaMedia, which is nothing but a testimony to the outrage by millions of people which includes both Nepalese and Indians against the Indian media coverage of the devastating Nepal quake? 
	 
	The extensive coverage of the earthquake and the aftermath of it by the Indian news channels have only raised one question about this fraternity--- In the race to get exclusive pictures or soundbytes for their respective organisations, did Indian journalists forget their basic sense of ethics? In her open letter to the Indian media, Nepali writer Sunita Shakya clearly called the Indian coverage of the disaster struck Nepal as ‘shooting some kind of family serials’. 
	 
	“There has been one viral news report going on where a reporter presented how people were fighting for food and one woman got injured badly. Thanks to the reporter, who had enough time to grab the victim and bring to the camera to show the victim hurt badly on her head. But how surprising, he did not have a minute to grab a piece of cloth to stop bleeding! That reporter did not have a minute to grab the wrist of that person who was beating others with a helmet. There was of course a cameraman who does not want to miss a second so that a dramatic news could be presented. I think you are a human before you become a media person. As a responsible person, it was your duty to save someone,” writes an agitated Shakya. 
	 
	Next she points out that an Indian journalist, in his bid to get exclusive information about the work (read great) that India was doing in the country, also hampered the on-going relief work, when he asked one of the rescue workers about the kind of technology that has been used. Really, do we have no sense of time or situation? In our attempt to be number one, did we really forget that with every passing second, there is a life lost—maybe a doting father or mother, a wife or a husband and the worse—a child!

While there is no doubt that the Indian media has been a catalyst in many ways in the Indian society as well as globally, but it is during times of distress that the depth and the maturity of a pivotal instrument like media is measured.

Mohali, Dec 5 () Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Thursday said his government is committed to providing a safe and stable environment to industry, and eliminating gangsters was on the top of his agenda.
 Amarinder was speaking at an interactive session during the first day of Progressive Punjab Investors Summit (PPIS) 2019.
 Citing the steps taken by his government to facilitate industrial development, Amarinder said the focus is on providing the right environment to investors and industry to promote Punjab as a preferred destination. 
 He talked about several decisions taken by his government to improve ease of doing business in the state, including single-window clearances, online applications and approvals, subsidy on industrial power, amendments to key legislations related to business and industry, as well as water regulation.
 He said Punjab does not have labour problems and the state's educated and committed workforce was a major asset for the industry.
 When asked about gangsterism in the state, Amarinder said eliminating it is a priority for his government. 
 "Either they (gangsters) lay down arms, or they will have to face the consequences," he warned. 
 Notably, the opposition party SAD has been targeting the government, alleging that the law and order situation in the state has "collapsed" and gangsters are "ruling the roost."
 Amarinder said he abolished truck unions to provide a safe environment for industry to operate.
 Steps are also being taken to ensure women safety so that they can take up industrial jobs and do night shifts, he said, adding that any woman could call the police for safe transportation back home not only at night but at any time of the day if she felt threatened or unsafe in any way. 
 The chief minister also underlined the need to shift people from agriculture to industry in view of the surplus production that is making agriculture non-viable. 
 On its part, the Punjab government is promoting skill development to boost employability, he added.
 He also stressed on the need to provide continuity to industry to encourage them to invest and expand in Punjab. 
 It is essential not to indulge in political vendetta with the opposition and ensure that any party coming to power maintains the same policy approach to industry, he added. 
 "Stability is a key component for providing an enabling environment for industrial growth," he said, hoping that the next government that takes over the state will also adopt this philosophy.
 To a question on drugs, he said his government has set up a special task force to contain the menace.
 While the drug problem will not disappear in view of the money involved in the business, it would be well under control and manageable by the time the next Assembly elections are due in the state, Amarinder said.
 On the issue of stubble burning, he reiterated his stand that the Centre would have to pitch in to find a permanent solution to the problem. 
 He stressed on the need for the central government to add compensation of Rs 100 per quintal to minimum support price to check stubble burning, and also underscored the importance of crop diversification in the long term to eliminate the problem. 
 He said he would again raise the issue with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during their next meeting. 
 Farmers would definitely shift from wheat and paddy to other crops, just like they had moved to paddy cultivation in the 1960s, if it is made worth while for them, he said.
 Punjab, like other states, is already reeling under financial problems due to non-payment of GST share in time by the Centre, the chief minister said, pointing out that Punjab had not received its GST share since August 2019, translating into dues of Rs 6,000 crore.
 Given that the states have handed over all other revenue generation sources to the central government under the GST regime, it has left them in a critical situation, he added.

Punjab govt committed to provide safe, stable environment to industry: Amarinder

India’s ongoing elections is a battle for dominance inside the Parliament. The incumbent government led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is seen as the strongest outfit, even after five years in power. The party is projecting Prime Minister Narendra Modi as an invincible candidate with solutions for the millions of problems that plague India’s economy and society, much like Thanos. On the other hand, unlike the two-party structure in the US, there is a motley crew of political parties with equally big egos but very diverse ideologies, and varying degrees of charisma. However, individual prospects of success, if they were to take on Modi by themselves, can be called uncertain at best. Therefore, there is a clamour for a grand anti-Modi coalition-- in India they call it ‘<keyword id="2838249" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mahagathbandhan">Mahagathbandhan</keyword>’-- much like the Avengers. What is missing is the equivalent of a S.H.I.E.L.D that can put together an optimal team. Yet, efforts towards forming a coalition are constantly underway. Some analysis [hyperlink] suggest that it will remain a strong possibility even after the elections. In academic terms, the phenomenon is called ‘index of opposition unity’. In all the Parliamentary elections since 2002, 45% of the seats have been won due to low ‘index of opposition unity’, according to data analysed by veteran psephologists Prannoy Roy and Dorab Sopariwala in their recent book ‘The Verdict’. In other words, the winning party converted low votes into a seat because the rival parties were fragmented. However, it is easier said than done for parties to forge friendships given their troubled past with each other. Most parties have been part of different alliances, led either by BJP or the Congress, at some point or the other. The ideologies have been far more malleable than their egos. The contenders

 There are 12 regional and local parties from 10 states that have come together for now. Leading the coalition from the front is the Bahujan Samajwadi Party and Samajwadi party in Uttar Pradesh. The political landscape changed in the western parts of Uttar Pradesh when <keyword id="6388951" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rashtriya-Lok-Dal">Rashtriya Lok Dal</keyword> joined hands [hyperlink] with Samajwadi Party-Bahujan Samaj Party to gear up against the rise of BJP in Uttar Pradesh. The RLD is a former ally of the <keyword id="190679" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-National-Congress">Indian National Congress</keyword>, the only other national outfit after BJP. Congress itself is not part of this alliance, at least not yet. The Congress itself has stitched together a different clique comprising of other regional satraps like the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) from Tamil Nadu, the <keyword id="54794" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nationalist-Congress-Party">Nationalist Congress Party</keyword> (NCP) in Maharashtra, and the <keyword id="123786" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rashtriya-Janata-Dal">Rashtriya Janata Dal</keyword> (RJD) in Bihar, among others. While some of the communist outfits are in the Congress clique, the biggest of all the red parties, the Communist Party of India (Marxist), CPI(M) as it’s popularly known, is still largely fighting on its own in different parts of the country. As it stands, CPI(M) cannot form a government on its own, it has to offer its support to one coalition or the other. The party’s state unit in Punjab has already offered its support to the Mahagathbandhan in Uttar Pradesh. The fight between Modi’s challengers is to decide who shall lead the pack and who shall become the Prime Minister. So while the different packs are non-committal to a common cause right now, a post-poll consensus is still very likely after some of the egos are cut to size by the election results. But Modi is not Thanos However much the BJP would like Modi to be all-powerful and invincible like Thanos, he isn’t. Even in the thumping victory of 2014, the BJP and allies, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) had just 31% of the country’s votes. The parties backing Modi, too, have mostly been fair-weather friends at best. The Janata Dal (United) led by <keyword id="6358190" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nitish-Kumar">Nitish Kumar</keyword> in Bihar has been in and out of the NDA at will in the past. Bickering is a constant feature between the BJP and the Shiv Sena in Maharashtra, an alliance that has survived 25 years with breaks in between. While the two parties are fighting together this election, the Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray recently called Modi ‘a thief’ just days before sealing the deal with the BJP. Realpolitik, the German word for politics that is more practical than ideological, comes alive every five years, around the Lok Sabha election, in India. As in The Avengers Endgame, the challengers will have to sacrifice ego and embrace realpolitik to stay relevant.

The Bharatiya Janata Party, unsurprisingly, credited it to another 'Modi wave'. However, a deeper dive into the numbers show the so-called Modi wave is still not a national phenomenon. But to its credit, the party has managed to retain some of its strongholds in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, and Haryana. The party has clearly managed to overcome any anti-incumbency in these states. The opposition's hopes of gains after the upswing in the recent state assembly elections did not materialise. On the other hand, BJP is likely to lose a significant number of seats in Uttar Pradesh, as expected by many pundits even in the run up to these elections. Further, the BJP is likely to be a net loser in the four states compared to its tally in 2014. The average of polls predict that BJP may clock over 20 seats less in the state compared to five years ago. There may be some gain in Karnataka-- the poll of polls suggest a gain of less than five seats -- but the loss of an ally in Chandrababu Naidu's (Telugu Desam Party) would take away the 16 seats he brought to the table five years ago. The two states may have given BJP 21 more seats this time around, helping the party offset the losses in other parts of the country like the Uttar Pradesh and in the southern states. The BJP also had made dedicated efforts towards these states and it paid off. To understand how important Bengal was for Modi, this was the state where he addressed the <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/elections/lok-sabha/india/pms-marathon-51-day-campaign-sees-142-rallies-1/3rd-of-them-in-up-and-west-bengal/articleshow/69376507.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">most number of rallies</a> after Uttar Pradesh. After all, he was faced off with the regional powerhouse, Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC). While they have predicted that winner right more often than not but they underestimate the number of seats that the winning side may garner. The average under-estimation of the winning party by pollsters in Parliamentary election is about 8%, according to veteran psephologists Dr Prannoy Roy and Dorab Sopariwala in their recent book, The Verdict. These results can, at best, be described as Modi holding his ground. India's exit polls of 2019 signal that Modi may have got his math right

<ul><li>The verifiable paper audit trail (VVPAT) will be making its national debut at the upcoming general elections in India.</li><li>The VVPAT system was introduced after the Delhi High Court ruled in 2012 that electronic voting machines (EVMs) are not completely tamper-proof.</li><li>The EVMs have also been upgraded for the 2019 general elections to the 'M3' third generation models.</li></ul>While electronic voting machines (EVMs) were introduced to the Indian electoral process in 1989, the verifiable paper audit trail (VVPAT) will make its debut during the general elections this year. The idea is simple — in order to improve upon the transparency during the voting process, using the VVPAT will allow users to verify that their vote was cast as intended. The new method of vote verification was brought into play after the Delhi High Court <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/EVMs-not-tamper-proof-but-no-paper-trail-Delhi-HC/articleshow/11522072.cms?referral=PM">ruled</a> in 2012 that EVMs are not "tamper-proof." And, even though the court did not direct the Election Commission (EC) to incorporate a paper trail to record the votes, it did suggest that some mechanism should be put in place in order to put doubts to rest. And then in 2013, came the Supreme Court <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/New-EVMs-to-have-paper-trail/articleshow/11561762.cms?referral=PM">verdict</a> that the EC should employ the VVPAT system so that there would be a way to audit the electronic results. How does VVPAT work? Before casting their ballot, voters should <a href="https://eci.gov.in/files/file/9230-manual-on-electronic-voting-machine-and-vvpat/">check</a> the LED power light on the EVM is green. That means the machine is not busy and ready to record the vote. It's once you've cast your vote, there should a 'beep' to confirm that the vote has been recorded by the machine. The VVPAT will then provide visual verification by printing the serial number, name and party symbol of the candidate that was voted for along with the serial number of the VVPAT unit and the poll session number on a receipt. The display window where the information will appear is sealed, so voters can't physically touch the receipt. And normally, when the machine is not in use, the items behind the window aren't visible and the window appears black. So, it's only when a vote is cast on the EVM, that the light within the viewing window comes on, but only for seven seconds. In that time frame, voters will have to verify that the details are correct before the slip gets cut and falls into the a seal drop box within the VVPAT. According to the EC, the VVPAT can only be attached to the EVM — in fact, it only has the one port — in order to register votes. Since the print runs on a battery pack, like the EVM, it's not dependent on electricity to operate.

 Even the EVMs are being upgraded to a third generation 'M3' machines, which are said to be tamper proof and have a self-diagnostic system to authenticate whether a machine is genuine or not, according to the EC. "Each EVM can record a button being pressed only after every 12 seconds. If buttons are pressed more often, the EVM will not record any vote. In any 'booth capture' situation, it would take nearly three and a half hours to press the buttons 1,000 times (the typical number of votes for any EVM) and even that assumes the buttons would be pressed rapidly, every 12 seconds exactly. EVMs are simply not a feasible or efficient way to carry out electoral fraud," veteran psephologists Prannoy Roy and Dorab Sopariwala wrote in their book 'The Verdict', released on March 15. Mock polls are conducted to ensure that the machines are in optimal working condition and the machines are alloted to the polling booths through an elaborate randomization process so that nobody knows which machine will be at which polling booth until the very last moment. The introduction of the VVPAT system should, ideally, serve as a reassurance for those who fear EVM tampering by political parties. Even though the EC maintains that the EVMs can't be "<a href="https://www.ndtv.com/india-news/electronic-voting-machine-tampering-accusations-in-up-local-body-polls-1779349">tinkered</a>" with in any way, there were allegations during the Uttar Pradesh bypolls in May 2018 where voters and some candidates claimed that no matter which button was pressed on the machine, the EVM registered the vote in favour of the BJP.
