The hallmark, as the BIS notes, is a crucial indicator of authenticity, especially given the high value traditionally associated with gold purchases during this festival. The BIS hallmark consists of three critical components: the BIS Standard Mark, confirming adherence to quality standards; the Purity Mark, which denotes gold’s fineness and carat purity; and a unique Hallmark Unique ID (HUID), a six-digit alphanumeric code specific to each jewellery piece. Consumers can verify the HUID on their jewellery using the ‘<keyword id="23727070" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="verify-HUID" source="keywords">Verify HUID</keyword>’ feature on the BIS Care App, which is free to download. This added verification step ensures customers can make informed purchases that meet the advertised purity levels, making the hallmark a trusted seal during peak shopping seasons. As part of its hallmarking efforts, BIS has made hallmarking mandatory in several regions of India since June 2021. Originally launched in 256 districts, hallmarking has been expanded to cover 343 districts following three phases of implementation, according to BIS. The scheme has had a substantial impact, with the number of BIS-registered jewellers increasing from 43,153 in 2021 to over 193,567 today. Furthermore, the number of Assaying and Hallmarking Centres (AHCs) now stands at 1,611, reflecting an extensive infrastructure to meet rising demand. Hallmarking fees have been set at Rs 45 per piece (exclusive of taxes), with testing available at AHCs for Rs 200 per item, a move BIS believes supports consumer confidence by offering a third-party verification system. Director General of BIS, <keyword id="22532001" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pramod-Kumar-Tiwari" source="keywords">Pramod Kumar Tiwari</keyword>, reiterated BIS’s commitment to upholding <keyword id="21945794" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="quality-standards" source="keywords">quality standards</keyword> in gold purchases, especially during festive seasons like Dhanteras, when jewellery is traditionally seen as a symbol of prosperity and future security. Tiwari encouraged consumers to prioritise BIS-certified jewellery, highlighting that with the hallmark and BIS CARE app, buyers can validate purchases independently. With Dhanteras marking a peak in gold buying as families seek financial security, BIS is focusing on educating consumers about hallmarking as a means to safeguard investments. This growing system of certification, backed by government oversight, is intended to make buying gold a transparent, secure experience—one that helps consumers focus more on the joy of the purchase and less on the risks associated with authenticity. Compulsory hallmarking of gold bullion not mandatory from July 1, consultations on

More than 18,000 toys from major stores across the country, including those of <keyword id="102844" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="hamleys" source="Orion">Hamleys</keyword> and Archies, have been seized by the government through 44 raids conducted in the past two weeks, official sources informed. The raids or enforcement drives were conducted by the Bureau of Indian Standards (<keyword id="6367870" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="bis" source="Orion">BIS</keyword>) against toy sellers for selling toys without conforming to the quality norms specified by BIS. In addition to this, the <keyword id="2619929" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="central-consumer-protection-authority" source="Orion">Central Consumer Protection Authority</keyword> (CCPA) has issued notices to three major e-commerce players namely <keyword id="18635" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="amazon" source="Orion">Amazon</keyword>, <keyword id="6354742" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="flipkart" source="Orion">Flipkart</keyword> and Snapdeal, for alleged violation of toys quality control order, sources informed. Since January 1, 2021, the government has made it mandatory for toys to conform to the Quality Control Order norms specified by BIS. New Delhi, Nov 27 () The Centre is considering to make the BIS standards on piped drinking water mandatory to ensure safe and quality water to people, and the consumer affairs ministry has written to the jal shakti ministry in this regards.
 The proposal comes amid tests conducted by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) on drinking water, which found water quality in Mumbai as per standard but poor in many state capitals, including Delhi.
 "The Centre has the power to make BIS standard (on piped drinking water) mandatory. We have already written a letter to the jal shakti ministry to make it mandatory," Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan told reporters here.
 The minister said his mission is to ensure safe and quality water to people of not only the national capital but across India.
 He, however, spoke about the implementation challenge in case BIS standards on piped water are made mandatory. "If states do not follow standards, we cannot ban supply of water."
 The BIS is the national standard body established under the BIS Act 2016 for harmonious development of the activities of standardisation, marking and quality certification of goods.
 BIS Director General Pramod Kumar Tiwari said that under the BIS Act, there is provision that standards formulated for any products can be made mandatory.
 The BIS has sent a draft quality control order to the consumer affairs ministry, proposing that standard on drinking water as a product and standard on entire supply chain or control points should be made mandatory.
 To check quality of water, the BIS has conducted two phase of testing and plans two more rounds of sample collection and testing.
 In the first phase, the samples of drinking water were drawn from 11 different locations across Delhi and in the second phase, 10 samples were drawn from 10 locations of 20 state capitals.
 On November 16, Paswan released the second phase of the BIS study which stated that Delhi along with Kolkata and Chennai failed in almost 10 out of 11 quality parameters for drinking water.
 Samples of tap water collected from Mumbai were found to be compliant with the Indian standards for drinking water.
 However, other metro cities of Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai failed in almost 10 out of 11 quality parameters tested by the BIS, which is under the aegis of the consumer affairs ministry.
 Similarly, samples drawn from 17 other state capitals were not as per the specification 'Indian Standard (IS)-10500:2012' for drinking water.
 In the third phase, samples from the capital cities of northeastern states and from 100 smart cities will be tested and their results are expected by January 15, 2020.
 While in the fourth phase, it is proposed to test samples from all the district headquarters of the country and the results are expected by August 15, 2020. MJH HRS
