All the Badals, led by five-time Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, the eldest candidate at 94 in fray for the 117-member Punjab Assembly, as well as their kin, on Thursday lost to AAP's greenhorns. The eldest Badal, who won the seat five times in a row since 1997, lost to Gurmeet Khuddian from Lambi by 11,357 votes, while his son and Shiromani <keyword id="42824" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="akali-dal" source="Orion">Akali Dal</keyword> (SAD) chief and Member of Parliament Sukhbir Badal faced humiliating defeat from Jalalabad, and his son-in-law Adesh Partap Singh Kairon faced defeat from Patti in Tarn Taran district from AAP's Laljit Singh Bhullar. Sukhbir Badals's brother-in-law Bikram Majithia and his estranged cousin Manpreet Badal, who was in the fray on a Congress ticket, also lost the poll from their respective seats. As per the Election Commission, AAP's Khuddian, a Congress rebel, was polled 65,717 votes and the elderly Badal got 54,360. The junior Badal has lost the elections by a margin of 23,310 votes from Jalalabad to AAP's Jagdeep Kamboj. Majithia, who was in the fray from Amritsar (East) seat, took the third spot, with 25,112 votes. His archrival and state Congress President Navjot Singh Sidhu also suffered a loss in his seat, garnering only 32,807 votes. Both senior leaders were defeated by AAP's novice Jeevan Jyot Kaur, who received 39,520 votes. A five-time MLA and two-time Finance Minister, Manpreet Badal, who is the son of Gurdas Badal, the younger brother of Parkash Badal, lost the elections from Bathinda Urban. He first won in 1995 on a SAD ticket from Gidderbaha and retained the seat in 1997, 2002, and 2007. He quit the party in 2010 and floated his own political outfit, People's Party of Punjab. In 2016, Manpreet Badal merged his outfit with the Congress, after having lost from both Gidderbha and Maur seats. He then won the 2017 elections as a Congress candidate from Bathinda. "We whole-heartedly and with total humility accept the mandate given by Punjabis. I am grateful to lakhs of Punjabis who placed their trust in us and to SAD-BSP workers for their selfless toil. We will continue to serve them with humility in the role they have assigned to us," Sukhbir Badal tweeted. AAP's chief ministerial candidate Bhagwant Mann in his first public address after his victory said: "Bade (elderly) Badal Sahib has lost, Sukhbir (Badal) has lost from Jalalabad, Capt (Amarinder Singh) has lost from Patiala, Sidhu and Majithia are also losing, Channi has lost on both the seats." Congress firebrand legislator Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, who retained his Gidderbaha constituency in Muktsar district, said he has been saying that all Badals, including Congress's Manpreet Singh Badal, were playing a fixed match. He said he had even asked the electorates to defeat all Badals, including his colleague, from wherever they are contesting. "This is a message for the Badals, all the Badals, a message for Bathinda wala Badal (Manpreet Badal) and Lambi wala Badal (Parkash Singh Badal), they are playing a fixed match. In Bathinda, they are with the Congress and here they are Akalis. Such traitors should be exposed," he had said during campaigning. However, Sukhbir Badal had been categorically saying the Badal family had no connections with Manpreet Badal and the party's interests were supreme to them. Even Manpreet Badal had clarified that he had ended all his family ties with the Badal family 11 years ago. Snapping over two-decade long ties, the Akali Dal pulled out of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in September 2020 after sharp differences emerged over the three controversial farm laws. The Congress, which was out of power in Punjab for a decade (2007-17), got 77 seats in the 2017 Assembly elections after drubbing the Akali Dal-BJP combine. At that time, the elder Badal had won the Assembly elections from Lambi by defeating Congress candidate Amarinder Singh by 22,770 votes. All Badals and their kin unseated by AAP's greenhorns in Punjab elections

The apiarists of Hanumangarh district of Rajasthan are as busy as a <keyword id="6363485" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="bee" source="Orion">bee</keyword> itself. Sadly, they are not getting a fair price for the hard work they put in. Over the years, production cost has soared, but honey prices have not increased proportionately, putting around 1,500 beekeepers in the district in a tight spot. Considering the charges incurred on bee boxes, labour, food and accommodation of labourers and transport, the production cost of one kg of honey comes to Rs 125. In contrast, companies buy the produce for Rs 60-70 per kg, which is at least Rs 10 less than the procurement price provided almost two decades ago! The struggle does not end with this wide disparity in input and procurement costs. The drop in honey production also stings beekeepers. "Twenty-five years ago, one colony produced 50 to 60 kg of honey in the mustard growing season (October to March). With the increased use of pesticides and fertilisers, this has come down to 15 kg," said Punjab-based Jaspreet Singh, who supplies bee colonies to apiarists in Hanumangarh. "Bees do not visit flowers of crops sprayed with pesticides, else they will die. This has affected pollination. There is also a new concern that genetically modified plants might have an adverse effect on pollinators," he added. Honey trap Among the many issues, the addition of artificial colours and sugars to honey is a major cause of concern for beekeepers. "The authorities are hand in glove with procuring companies. It keeps changing norms, which encourages companies to sell adulterated honey instead of buying pure produce from us. Some parameters were unnecessarily diluted, without any explanation,' Prakash Singh <keyword id="6382895" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="badal" source="Orion">Badal</keyword>, a resident of Nohar in Hanumangarh and president of the northern Rajasthan unit of the Rashtriya Beekeepers Sangharsh Samiti, told 101Reporters. The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations has defined honey as a natural sweet substance produced by bees from the pollination of plants or by separating living parts of plants or by insects sucking on living plants. The bee collects, transforms, dehydrates and stores it, ripens and matures it in the hive. For the greed of money, several companies play with the health of unsuspecting consumers by selling honey mixed with maize and rice syrup. An investigation carried out by Delhi-based Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) in 2020 found that 10 out of the 13 major brands sold honey containing sugar syrup. "In 1994, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India had set the standard for pollen count and plant element in honey at 50,000 per gram, but it was changed to 25,000 per gram in 2018. A year later, it was diluted to 5,000 per gram. The government also did away with the quality control test for honey," Badal explained. At the same time, pollen count is not considered a measure of the quality of honey globally. Consequently, determining adulteration by checking the pollen count has been a matter of controversy. This is exacerbated by the fact that pollen count varies in different types of honey. For example, it can be different in mustard, litchi, or honey obtained from a single flower or different flowers. Banks sting them Rajasthan Khadi and Village Industries Board does not run any special scheme for beekeepers, but gets grants from the Khadi and Village Industries Commission through the state government. While banks give loans to apiarists, the board pitches in by offering subsidies to the loanee using the Central Commission's grant. The subsidy component differs for Scheduled Castes and Tribes, Other Backward Classes and the general category. However, the subsidy upper limit is 35 per cent of the loan amount. Harjeet Singh of Araiyanwali Dhani explained how banks let him down. "My brother Gurmeet Singh and I made a loan application with the Khadi board in 2019. The board sanctioned Rs 8 lakh each in our names and sent the proposal to ICICI Bank, which turned it down after a long-winding process. If the bank had passed our loan, we could have expanded our beekeeping business and taken advantage of the subsidy." Kuldeep Saharan of Ranjitpura had a similar experience. "The board sanctioned Rs 4 lakh in my name, but the State Bank of India did not disburse the money. No bank gives money to beekeepers," he lamented. Confirming the charge, Madan Lal Swami, Divisional Officer, Rajasthan Khadi and Village Industries Board, Bikaner, told 101Reporters that banks were not cooperative. He said they have raised the issue in several meetings and seminars, but the attitude of the banks have remained the same. "From 2018 to date, 58 apiarists have applied for loans. We rejected 21 applications at the departmental level due to various deficiencies, but approved 35 and asked various banks to give loans. Yet, only four beekeepers got the money. The remaining two applications are pending with us." When contacted, <keyword id="103483" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="raj-kumar" source="Orion">Raj Kumar</keyword>, lead district manager, Hanumangarh, told 101Reporters that banks do not adopt a negative approach in any matter. "It is quite possible that banks have rejected several applications because they are not confident that the loanee can pay back the amount. They just want to ensure the return of the money. At the same time, there may be cases where the banks have given loans to all applicants. It is purely based on the merit of each case," he said. Rajasthan Horticulture Department also has a provision to arrange a 40 per cent subsidy from the National Horticulture Mission for the supply of bee colonies and bee boxes. In the 2022-23 financial year, the department planned to distribute 2,850 colonies and boxes in Hanumangarh district. Similarly, neighbouring Sri Ganganagar district was to get 7,550 colonies and boxes each. Horticulture Officer <keyword id="6110560" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rajendra-nain" source="Orion">Rajendra Nain</keyword> told 101Reporters that a tender invite was issued last year, but the contract was not inked with any of the bidders. Two months ago, a new tender invitation was made. Bogged down by several issues, the apiarists of Hanumangarh district held a protest outside the Collectorate in February and submitted a memorandum of demands, which included announcing a Minimum Support Price of Rs 150 per kg for honey. They sought recognition of honey bees as inputs to agriculture and landless beekeepers as farmers, as recommended by Bibek Debroy-led Beekeeping Development Committee under the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister. "The Debroy committee had recommended plantation of bee-friendly flora at appropriate places and employment of women self-help groups for its upkeep," said Badal. The committee report released on June 26, 2019, had discussed the state government's role in training beekeepers, besides promoting infrastructure at the national and regional levels for the collection, processing, marketing and promotion of honey and related products. There were suggestions to simplify the procedures and specify clear standards to ease exports. "We would have benefitted if the committee's recommendations were implemented, but it has been shelved for almost four years," he added. The beekeepers also sought the setting up of a laboratory that met international standards to check the purity of honey and curb adulteration. They want the administration to ban genetically modified crops and the indiscriminate use of pesticides in agriculture. They believe that farmers will benefit if honey is included in the mid-day meal scheme, and made available at government stores. On 13 seats in Punjab, INC won eight seats, BJP won four seats and Aam Aadmi Party has the one seat to its name. The former actor, Sunny Deol, who joined BJP earlier this month, brought home Gurdaspur for the saffron party. They've also won in Bathinda, Hoshiarpur, and Firozpur. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Shriromani Akali Dali (SDA) was counting on the anti-incumbency wave against the state’s Chief Minister, Captain Amarinder Singh, to win over Punjab. They even brought in Sunny Deol to keep the Gurdaspur constituency from falling into Congress’ hands. Their efforts weren’t nearly enough. Even in 2014, the NDA only led by a very thin margin of five seats — four seats went to AAP and three to the UPA. Punjab has 13 Lok Sabha seats in total. For 2019 Lok Sabha elections, all the seats went for polling together during the seventh and the last phase of elections in the country on May 19, 2019. Over the past few general elections, the BJP has been performing poorly in this state either with no seats or with very few seats to take for the parliament. In 2014 elections, the party did not secure even a single seat from here. In 2009 general elections, the party got just one constituency and in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections, BJP got just 3 places from Punjab. In the Amritsar constituency, Hardeep Puri of Congress is fighting the Lok Sabha elections 2019 with AAP’s Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal and Hardeep Singh Puri of BJP. From Jalandhar seat, Santokh Singh Chaudhary of Congress has locked horns with AAP's is Jora Singh and SAD’s Charanjit Singh Atwal. SAD is an ally of the BJP. In the Patiala constituency, Preneet Kaur of Congress has contested with Nina Mittal of AAP and Surjit Singh Rakhra of SAD. The choice of candidates by the Congress party in the key constituencies can pose a bigger challenge for AAP and BJP in Punjab.

Jalandhar, Apr 10 () With Covid-19 lockdown resulting in a complete halt of trading activities, barring some essential commodities, the over Rs 2,000-crore sports industry of Jalandhar is having a harrowing time as the current situation has forced sport goods manufacturers to defer orders. With the nationwide lockdown enforced to contain the spread of novel coronavirus, the manufacturers of sport items here are apprehensive about their future going ahead amid indications that the government might decide to further extend the lockdown in view of rising virus cases in several parts of the country. A sports goods manufacturing hub, Jalandhar produces nearly 70 per cent of total India's sports goods and is a leading name in national and international brands of cricket, hockey, football, rugby and fitness range. In terms of international market, the industry exports material to the UK, Australia, South Africa, Germany, France, Netherlands, New Zealand and others. Alarmed over the situation, the industrialists while supporting the government's move of lockdown said that losses were imminent and the industry would be hit hard. Atul Madan, the owner of century-old Sarve Prakash and Company, Jalandhar, a leading name in Rugby Export in India, said that in the wake of Covid-19, all national and international borders were sealed and it was complete slowdown now. "Our export material including footballs, bats, sports accessories for New Zealand and South Africa were lying stuck at Delhi and Bombay Ports. Similarly, not just international sports events like soccer leagues, IPL, other tournaments but those in educational institutions across the country were also staring at an uncertain future as of now," he said, adding that post Covid-19, the government should provide comfortable liquidity and package to sustain the industry operations. Nitin Mahajan, the owner of AVM Sports and the general secretary of Sports and Toys Exporters Association, said a letter has been written to Principal Secretary to PM P K Mishra and Punjab Finance Minister Manpreet Singh Badal to sanction GST refunds on priority and increase the percentage of Merchandise Exports from India Scheme (MEIS) licences at least for this year and provide free Export Credit Gurantee Cooperation of India (ECGC) support for import and export to keep business afloat. The association also shared concerns that because sports goods do not come under 'essential items', this particular industry is facing lots of problems. "Lack of payment to dealers, distributors, corporates would affect the ability of manufacturers to pay dues to the employees. We have requested that the payments to the manufacturers related to government tenders, orders should be expedited once lockdown ends," Mahajan, whose AVM Sports is famous for cricket bats, cricket equipment and baseballs in India, shared. He also pointed out that schools, colleges, universities have been closed and stadiums might be taken over by the government for makeshift hospitals. "As sports industry is labour oriented, we would want the state government to save local employment and industry. Waiving or deferment of local taxes and minimum electricity charges for a period till the operations start is must," he said. The traders also mentioned that the sports industry was facing around Rs 2 to 3 crore loss in business every day. However, the total loss would be ascertained after the lockdown ends, it said. Rajesh Kharbanda, the managing director of Nivia Sports under the banner of Freewill Sports, said that other than the current crisis, manufacturers were concerned about the welfare of labourers too whom they paid salaries 10-days in advance. Apart from this, he hinted at the possible changes in sports business in terms of consumer behaviour. "Community sports like tournaments, gyms, marathons would witness a change because of social distancing. There was a big possibility that now people would prefer individual gym range and sports equipment in their houses like basketball and badminton courts abroad instead of going out. Even face masks would become compulsory to wear in the times to come," he said. Rajan Kohli, the managing director of TK Sports, renowned for Hockey, IPL jerseys for Kings XI Punjab, T-20 matches and Shrey Helmets for Cricket, said that no doubt business would go down but as of now the concern is that Covid-19 comes under control. "The central government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi was taking the best decisions to counter the pandemic. Business will come and go but right now we should support our country," he said.
