President Ram Nath Kovind accepts resignations of 12 union ministers, including Ravi Shankar Prasad, Prakash Javadekar and Harsh Vardhan

Greater Noida, Jan 18 () Union Ministers Prakash Javadekar and R K Singh on Saturday inaugurated Elecrama, organised by industry body IEEMA which is targeting businesses worth Rs 30,000 crore during the five-day event here.
The focus of this year's event is on e-mobility, energy storage, start-ups, grid transformation, revenue security with special attention on small and medium enterprises (SMEs), said Anil Saboo, the executive council member of the Indian Electrical and Electronics Manufacturers Association (IEEMA).
While inaugurating the event, Minister of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises Javadekar said, "It is an opportunity for exchange of ideas and learning. We understand that the industry's cause should translate to a societal cause."
Minister of Power, New and Renewable Energy Singh informed the stakeholders that despite hiccups, India is one of the fastest growing economies.
"India has achieved 367 gigawatt installed power generation capacity. We have connected India to one unified grid," he said.
Saboo said that Elecrama is power industry event organised by IEEMA every two years, he said, adding the industry body expects to do a business of Rs 30,000 crore at the five-day event from January 18 to January 22.
IEEMA president R K Chugh said government has set up a target of making India a USD 5 trillion economy and his industry will play a significant in achieving this goal.
Uttar Pradesh Industrial Development Minister Satish Mahana, who also attended the event, said his government has given 1.2 crore power connections in past two years.
He informed the gathering that the Uttar Pradesh government has set a target of installing 2,000 MW of solar power generation capacity every year and invited the investors to explore business opportunities in the state in the sector.
Over 1,300 exhibitors are participating in the event. Out of these about 450 are exhibitors from 120 nations. ABI NSD

Union Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday chaired a group of ministers meeting to decide the plan of action by the Centre on COVID-19. The meeting took place at Singh's residence. However, there was no decision taken on whether to end the lockdown on April 14 or extend it, in the meeting, say sources who attended the GOM. The biggest question in front of the government is weighing in two options -- loss of livelihood versus loss of life. The <keyword id="6355512" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="union-cabinet">Union Cabinet</keyword> on Wednesday approved allocation of 5 MHz spectrum in the 700 MHz band to Indian <keyword id="6360676" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="railways">Railways</keyword> for improving its <keyword id="24346" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="communication">communication</keyword> and signalling systems, Union minister <keyword id="119642" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Prakash-Javadekar">Prakash Javadekar</keyword> said. He said it will help improve safety of passengers on the transport network. The project with an estimated cost of Rs 25,000 crore will be completed in the next five years. The railways currently relies on optical fibre for its communication network but with the allocation of fresh spectrum, it will be able to use high-speed radio on a real-time basis. It will help in augmenting both communication and signalling networks of the railways, the minister said. Union Cabinet approves allocation of 5MHz spectrum in 700 MHz band for railways to improve communication and signalling, says Prakash Javadekar

<ul><li>India is going to fulfill the <keyword id="879547" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="sustainable-development-goals">sustainable development goals</keyword> before 2030. </li><li>The government claims to have reduced maternal and infant mortality rates, and under-five mortality rate, said the minister without giving any figures. </li><li>However, some of Javedkar’s claims conflict with one of a report released by the Indian government earlier this year. </li><li>In July 2019, the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India released a report highlighting the gaps in achieving the key objectives of the 2030 Agenda. </li></ul> Environment minister <keyword id="119642" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Prakash-Javadekar">Prakash Javadekar</keyword> today said that India will achieve its health-related sustainability goals well in advance. “We are happy to announce that the goals set for 2030 will be achieved much earlier,” <a href="https://twitter.com/PIB_India">said the minister.</a> The goal is to keep maternal mortality rate to less than 70 deaths per 100,000 live births. As per the target, under- 5 mortality should go down to 25 deaths per 1000 live births, <a href="https://data.unicef.org/topic/child-survival/child-survival-sdgs/">according to the UN. And infant mortality rate should go down to zero by 2030. </a> A release by Press Information Bureau also said that mortality of infants, mothers and children under-five is declining. “At the current rate of decline, India should able to reach its <keyword id="620876" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="SDG">SDG</keyword> target (MMR-70, U5MR-25) much before the due year i.e. 2030,”<a href="https://pib.gov.in/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=1587494"> said the release. </a> These claims come two months after Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) raised doubts that India may fall short in health-related sustainable goals. This is primarily due to inadequate spending on primary healthcare infrastructure. It also cited lack of data to track the progress of SDG as one of the reasons. <a href="http://www.censusindia.gov.in/vital_statistics/SRS_Bulletins/MMR%20Bulletin-2014-16.pdf">According to the Census</a> in 2017, as many as 130 women died per 100,000 live births. Infant mortality and under-five mortality rate was at 33 and 39 deaths per 1,000 live births. As per CAG, spending on healthcare itself is lower than what is budgeted for. It pointed out a massive gap in proposed budget and allocated budget into sprucing up India’s healthcare. The National Health Mission was allocation 13.6% less in 2018-19 than the proposed budget,<a href="https://www.indiaspend.com/india-unlikely-to-meet-health-related-sustainable-development-goals-says-govt-auditor/"> reported India spend. </a> The states are not spending enough either. As per National Health Policy 2017’s recommendations, states should spend 8% of their budgets by 2020. As many as seven states spent anywhere between 3.29% and 5.32% between 2012-2017. Overall, India spends a mere <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/india-spends-just-1-2-of-its-gdp-on-healthcare-but-a-policy-can-change-that/articleshow/64665303.cms">1.2% of its GDP on healthcare.</a> It ranks lower than Singapore, which itself is known for its low spending on public health.

Announcing the Cabinet decision, Union Minister <keyword id="119642" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Prakash-Javadekar">Prakash Javadekar</keyword> told reporters that the decision was taken as no party claimed to form a government in Puducherry following the resignation of the chief minister there. Subsequently, the Lieutenant General had recommended President's Rule in Puducherry and the Union Cabinet has approved the same, the minister said. After the President's assent, the assembly will get resolved, Javadekar said, while adding that further necessary steps for administrative work in Puducherry would be taken soon. He also noted that the model code of conduct was expected to come into effect soon after the Election Commission announces the dates for elections there, along with four states. Union Cabinet approves President's Rule in Puducherry

<ul><li>Following the controversy around the Saif Ali Khan-starrer <keyword id="1299578" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tandav">Tandav</keyword> when several FIRs were filed against it, Unio Minister <keyword id="119642" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Prakash-Javadekar">Prakash Javadekar</keyword> has announced that the <keyword id="82970" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ministry-of-Information-and-Broadcasting">Ministry of Information and Broadcasting</keyword> will soon come out with a set of guidelines to regulate it.</li><li>The move is a response to the multiple complaints received against several web series on various platforms.</li></ul>In view of the rising number of complaints received against content on various <keyword id="2354450" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Over-the-top">Over-the-Top</keyword> (<keyword id="1245953" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="OTT">OTT</keyword>) platforms, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting will soon come out with a set of guidelines to regulate it, Union Minister Prakash Javadekar said. Over the past few weeks, Saif Ali Khan-starrer Tandav on Amazon Prime received a lot of criticism with multiple FIRs being filed against it in several states. The ministry had received several complaints against Tandav for its depiction of Hindu Gods in the show and for hurting religious sentiments of people. The announcement by the Union Minister closely follows the controversy. Films and serials released on OTT platforms and digital newspapers do not come under the purview of the Press Council Act, Cable Television Networks (<keyword id="163506" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="regulation">Regulation</keyword>) Act or Censor Board and therefore there will be some guidelines soon to regulate the content, Javadekar said during a press conference. In November last year, the government brought OTT platforms under Ministry of Information and Broadcasting’s ambit. Previously, these platforms used to come under the <keyword id="3428254" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="ministry-of-electronics-and-information-technology">Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology</keyword>.

Following the Tandav controversy, government to start regulating OTT content

Lucknow, An FIR has been lodged here against the makers of web series 'Tandav' and <keyword id="18635" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword>'s India head of original content for allegedly depicting Hindu gods in a manner hurtful to <keyword id="522164" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="religious-sentiments">religious sentiments</keyword> of the people. The FIR against Aparna Purohit, the head of Amazon's India head of original content, director of the series Ali Abbas, producer Himanshu Krishna Mehra, writer Gaurav Solanki, and an unknown person was lodged late on Sunday night by senior Sub Inspector Amar Nath Yadav at the Hazratganj Kotwali police station here. The film starring <keyword id="333" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Saif-Ali-Khan">Saif Ali Khan</keyword>, Dimple Kapadia, Sunil Grover, Tigmanshu Dhulia, <keyword id="5894" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dino-Morea">Dino Morea</keyword>, Kumud Mishra, Mohd Zeeshan Ayyub, <keyword id="327" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gauhar-Khan">Gauhar Khan</keyword> and <keyword id="140105" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kritika-Kamra">Kritika Kamra</keyword>, premiered on the streaming platform on Friday. Taking to Twitter, BSP President Mayawati called for removing the objectionable content from the web series. Protests are being registered against some scenes hurting the religious and ethnic sentiments in the Tandav web series, in respect of which it would be appropriate to remove whatever is objectionable so that the atmosphere of peace, harmony and mutual brotherhood in the country is not spoiled anywhere, she said. According to the FIR, following public outrage expressed on social media platforms, the web series was viewed and it was found in the 17th minute of the first episode of the series that Hindu gods and goddesses have been allegedly presented in an "undignified manner' and shown using language which is hurtful to religious sentiments. Dialogues in the web series can incite caste anger, the FIR stated. It also alleged that the person occupying the high post of Prime Minister of India has been portrayed in a very belittling manner besides there are scenes in which castes have been presented as low and high and women in an insulting manner. The FIR further alleged that intent of the web series is to incite religious sentiments of a particular community and create enmity among classes.This act of the producer-director has hurt and incited religious and caste sentiments of the people, the FIR added. The FIR has been lodged under sections 153 A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language), 295 (injuring or defiling place of worship with intent to insult the religion of any class), 505 (1) (B) (statements conducing to public mischief with intent to cause, or which is likely to cause, fear or alarm to the public, or to any section of the public whereby any person may be induced to commit an offence against the State or against the public tranquility) and 469 (forgery for purpose of harming reputation) along with sections of the IT Act. Taking cognizance of complaints that Hindu gods and goddesses have been ridiculed in the web series, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting had on Sunday sought an explanation from <keyword id="10265015" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="streaming-platform-amazon-prime-video">streaming platform Amazon Prime Video</keyword> on the issue, sources had said. The development came after BJP MP Manoj Kotak on Sunday said he has written to Information and Broadcasting Minister <keyword id="119642" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Prakash-Javadekar">Prakash Javadekar</keyword> seeking a ban on Amazon Prime Video's series 'Tandav' for ridiculing Hindu deities. "The ministry has taken cognizance of the matter (complaints) and asked Amazon Prime Video to explain," a source in the ministry had said. Kotak, the MP from Mumbai North-East, said different organisations and individuals have complained that Hindu gods and goddesses have been ridiculed in the 'Tandav' web series. When contacted about the complaints, Amazon Prime Video PR had said the platform "won't be responding" on the matter. The government recently brought OTT platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Disney+ Hotstar, besides other online news and current affairs content, under the ambit of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, giving it powers to regulate policies and rules for the digital space.
