The fight against climate change on one hand and rapid urbanisation on the other, topped up with the challenges thrown by COVID, there are many lessons to be learnt from experiences in different countries. And who better to ask than Pradeep Parameswaran, the man who has been battling changes across the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region for one of the world’s largest ride hailing apps, Uber. Parameswaran has been spearheading many innovations including bringing in more electrical vehicles to tackle pollution and congestion in a market like India. After the lockdown forced many Indians to stay indoors, the cab aggregator, like many others, was greatly affected. However, it also stayed true to its core of mobility and innovation and quickly extended Uber Medic service for frontline workers. It also launched Uber Connect to help move essential goods when people were stuck at homes in want of basic needs. Quick pivots are not new for the Jamnalal Bajaj alumnus. Even at his earlier jobs, either as the CEO of DEN Networks or technology leader and partner at consultant McKinsey, he has always been advocating the role of technology in solving problems. Apart from mentoring and advising tech majors and startups alike, Parameswaran is also an active investor in startups. Parameswaran also believes in the transformational power that technology can play in emerging markets. In his current role too, he has been actively bringing many changes to Uber’s offerings in India which is a ‘low fare market’ with hyperlocal solutions. Since then, Uber in India has expanded to autos, bikes, partnered with public transportation to aid multimodal commuting and going electric – while it has sold its food delivery business to Zomato and picked up an almost 10% stake in the latter. Uber’s project of providing low-cost transportation that causes little damage to the environment has caught the fancy of many. And now, in a step to cut costs by shifting its engineering jobs to India, said a report by <a href="https://www.theinformation.com/articles/uber-ceo-wants-to-shift-more-engineering-jobs-to-india-sparking-internal-debate?shared=53eda2af81f50ffb">The Information.</a> According to the report, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi is eager to shift engineering innovation to India as it will be cheaper for the company. <keyword id="2502101" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uber-India">Uber India</keyword> didn’t comment on the same. Khosrowshahi had earlier said that the impact of COVID-19 would be drastic for the company. "I won't sugarcoat it. COVID-19 has had a dramatic impact on rides, with the business down globally around 80% in April,” he <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/uber-earnings-q1-161-million-loss-ridership-falls-3-percent/">said</a> during the conference call for its earnings. Earlier, as a part of its massive global layoff of 6,700 employees, Uber India had laid off 600 employees in India. “The impact of Covid-19 and the unpredictable nature of the recovery has left Uber IndiaSA with no choice but to reduce the size of its workforce. Around 600 full time positions across driver and rider support, as well as other functions, are being impacted. These reductions are part of previously announced global job cuts this month,” Pradeep Parameswaran, President, Uber India and South Asia had said during the layoffs in May 2020. However, Uber’s wish to shift its engineering to India is not something new. During his visit to India in 2019, Khosrowshahi had said that India is going to be a big source of innovation for them. “One example is the Uber Lite app, was designed and built in India and moved to over 30 countries around the world,” he had said. Manik Gupta who was then the Chief Product Officer of Uber had said that Uber is proud of the engineering and product talent based out of Bengaluru and Hyderabad. “We have a goal to double the headcount in these offices and have 1,000 people to build innovative products out of India,” he had said. Uber is struggling due to COVID19 – now it wants to cut costs by shifting its engineering to India

Interestingly, Sun Mobility is founded by Chetan Maini who had made India’s first electric car Reva. It was later sold to Mahindra &amp; Mahindra. Sun Mobility offers technological solutions to <keyword id="6354973" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="electric-vehicles">electric vehicles</keyword>. With their <a href="https://www.livemint.com/companies/news/uber-and-sun-mobilty-come-together-to-deploy-e-three-wheeler-in-india-1563953667519.html">partnership</a> with Uber, Sun will offer swappable smart batteries and quick interchange stations to original equipment manufacturers who will build EVs. Uber partners with India's first electric car maker for e-autorickshaws

New Delhi, Apr 9 () Ride-hailing major Uber on Thursday said it will provide grants totalling Rs 25 crore to its driver-partners in India to support them amid the ongoing coronavirus crisis. The US-based company is also looking at raising an additional Rs 25 crore through employee and third-party contributions. Uber India and South Asia President Pradeep Parameswaran said thousands of driver-partners have started receiving the grants under 'Uber Care Driver Fund' (created in partnership with giving India and Samhita) by direct transfer into their accounts to look after their urgent and essential family needs. He, however, did not comment on the number of driver-partners that will benefit from this grant and the amount being disbursed to each person. "Supporting driver communities has never been more important. We hope this first financial relief package for driver-partners helps them and their families cover their immediate and urgent daily needs. We expect the Rs 25 crore grant to be deployed in the next one week," he said. With the implementation of the lockdown across the country, the government has allowed only people in essential services like healthcare, banking and media to commute. Restricted mobility has left driver-partners of cab services like Ola and Uber with no source of income. UberMedic, UberEssential and Uber's delivery service driver-partners are also eligible for grants. These services have been started recently for transporting frontline workers, providing essential rides to the elderly and moving everyday supplies across India amid the nationwide lockdown.Parameswaran said, Uber aims to raise an additional Rs 25 crore through employee and third-party contributions. "We aim to raise an additional Rs 25 crore to reach a combined target of Rs 50 crore via contributions from employees, riders, CSR funds and citizens through a partnership with Milaap," he said. Over the next few days, Uber is also rolling out a Hospital Cash Insurance policy that will benefit driver-partners, and cover COVID-19 and other illnesses which require hospitalization, for up to 14 days. Both Uber and Ola have taken a number of steps to support their driver-partners.Ola Group on Thursday said it has pledged a sum of Rs 5 crore to the PM CARES Fund and Rs 3 crore towards the Chief Minister's Relief Funds of various states. It has also been offering interest-free credit of up to Rs 3,600 to driver-partners to help them meet immediate household expenses amid the coronavirus pandemic.Ola Foundation, the social welfare arm of the company, had recently launched the 'Drive the Driver Fund'. New Delhi, Mar 31 () Ride-hailing company Uber on Tuesday said it has launched a new service 'UberMedic' to help transport frontline healthcare workers to medical facilities and other critical areas across India."Uber is providing a new service, UberMedic, to transport frontline healthcare workers and help the government contain the spread of COVID-19 in India. Working closely with a network of hospitals and leveraging our global experience and technology, UberMedic allows hospitals to easily and reliably arrange transportation for doctors and other health workers to and from their homes as well as to health care facilities," Uber India and South Asia President Pradeep Parameswaran said in a statement.With the implementation of the 21-day lockdown, the government has allowed only people in essential services like healthcare, banking and media to commute. Limited mobility options have made it difficult for these people to travel to their workplace.On Monday, Uber's rival Ola had said it is in discussions with various state governments and the Centre to offer its transportation and kitchen services in India.While it has already started working with Karnataka government, it is in talks with other states and the Centre to extend its transportation services to help facilitate the transit of healthcare professionals, senior citizens, government officials and quick response teams who need mobility options, Ola had said.Uber, in its statement, said UberMedic is designed to ensure that all healthcare workers who need to be mobile have a reliable and efficient way of getting around. The company will facilitate top-rated drivers and dedicated cars to the hospitals through its platform.Keeping the safety of drivers in mind, and in line with government advisory, it will work with partner hospitals to provide drivers with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including hand sanitisers, gloves, disinfectant sprays and face masks."We hope that this 24/7 dedicated service gives hospitals and their health care workers the flexibility to provide optimal healthcare. In his opinion, the world has no way of becoming immune to everything, but the turbulence can become our strength. <ul><li>A “Black Swan” cannot be predicted, because it is not possible to “manage risk” fully. </li><li>The American market theorist, investor and philosopher explains how to benefit from the Black Swans.</li></ul>Nassim Nicholas Taleb is an American economist, philosopher and trader of Lebanese origin. In his academic work, he focuses on issues connected with probability, randomness and uncertainty. He is a professor at the University of New York and author of bestsellers: “The Black Swan. The Impact of Highly Improbable", and “Antifragile. Things That Gain From Disorder". The Sunday Times has chosen “The Black Swan” as one of the 12 most important books published after World War II. Living with the “Black Swan” "What I call the Black Swan (written in capital letters) is an event with the following three characteristics. Firstly, it is unusual because it goes beyond the domain of our usual expectations, as no element of the past clearly indicates its possible occurrence. Secondly, it has a drastic impact on reality (as opposed to a bird with an unusual plumage). Thirdly, despite the lack of typicality of this event, our nature forces us to seek a justification for its occurrence after the fact in order to make it explainable and predictable," writes Nassim Nicholas Taleb in his book. According to the economist, societies are not able to react well to the Black Swans because they focus too much on the past and look for the error they have made. However, it is only after the fact that we realise that such events could have been foreseen. Taleb points out that the crux of the matter is that a “Black Swan” cannot be predicted, because it is not possible to “manage risk” fully. In his opinion, we should realise that they do exist, rather than playing soothsayers. The author of the bestseller indicates that any “risk management” is wrong, because it assumes certain models, certain averages, and it is wrong to think that tomorrow will be the same as today. So what should we do? Taleb indicates that once in a while we will have to deal with something that is going to turn the life of our society upside down. We can only try to do our best every day and be reasonably resilient to this type of tragedy. If a Black Swan comes, this preparation will allow us to act much more effectively. "There are many possibilities, it is enough to focus on the anti-knowledge, which is what we do not know. For example, we can learn to benefit from the Black Swans (with their positive effects) by maximising our exposure to such events. In fact, in some areas - such as scientific discoveries and venture capital investments - what is unknown brings disproportionately higher returns, because in the case of rare events, we usually have little to lose and much to gain,” writes Nassim Nicholas Taleb. He also warns against drawing conclusions from the past too hastily and relying on historical data to predict the future. "Antifragility" Another well-known publication by Nassim Taleb is “Antifragile. Things That Gain From Disorder". The author argues that some things are served well by shocks because they develop and flourish under the influence of changeability and stress. He cites in his book a model example of exercise in a gym. Muscles are subjected to effort and stress, but the effect can be impressive and beneficial to health. Taleb transfers this example to organisations and companies. When a company avoids stress, its "muscles" become weaker and weaker, and this may be the first nail in the coffin in a constantly changing environment. In his book Nassim Taleb distinguishes between two types of stress: negative and positive. The positive is the one that is often repetitive, but manageable. It is the one that creates new opportunities. The negative is the one that causes the boat to tip over and the company to come out weakened. Here, in turn, we come to the concept of antifragility, i.e. continuous testing, building resilience and constant change. Taleb writes that it is impossible not to make a lot of mistakes, but these should be used to draw conclusions and build “immunity”. Everything, however, depends largely on the mentality, because it is not in human nature to go beyond the comfort zone and to be exposed to inconveniences. Thanks to new technologies, animals are not only healthier and more productive, but the livelihood of many people in poorer parts of the world is also improving," believes Kristin Peck, President of <keyword id="1184921" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Zoetis">Zoetis</keyword>. <ul><li>Zoetis has annual revenues of around USD 6 billion and employs more than 10,000 people worldwide. </li><li>The need for productivity and efficiency in animal husbandry has never been greater than now, says Peck.</li><li>Peck actively supports women. She is the author of the book "Perseverance" about motherhood. Together with her husband, she has gone through a long and traumatic journey, including five miscarriages, several infertility treatments and a story with a murderous nurse.</li></ul>Out of love for animals Zoetis is the world's largest manufacturer of vaccines and medicines for domestic and farm animals. Since January 2020, it has been headed by Kristin Peck. Previously, she led the company's global production and supply organisation, and from 2015 she was head of the company in the USA. Since 2018, Peck also managed the company's corporate strategy and development activities, including acquisitions. Kristin Peck grew up on her parents' farm in Connecticut, surrounded by dogs, cats, horses and birds who were treated like family members. Her mother bred Morgan horses and her father helped organise the rodeo. Her first job, still in high school, was with Zoetis, which she manages today. In an interview for the American “Successful Farming” magazine, she stresses that at some point in her life she realised how important it is for people to create new jobs. - As a Georgetown University student reading History and Spanish, I spent a semester teaching Spanish to children in Ecuador. I took care of them and taught them the language so that their parents could find work. I soon realised that learning Spanish would not improve the future of these children if there was not enough economic growth to employ their families in these areas. That led me to take the business path as a way of creating opportunities for people," says Peck. In an interview with the 'SF', the President of Zoetis points out that the need for productivity and efficiency in animal husbandry has never been greater than it is today, because the constraints resulting from the pandemic, the growing world population and the need to tackle environmental problems are still growing. The future lies in digital solutions. Sensors provide more information about the health of farm animals, and genetic testing is becoming increasingly important as producers can choose the healthiest and most resistant animal breeds. - We also see greater emphasis on reducing the carbon footprint. We are trying to help producers improve production while using less resources to keep healthier and more productive animals. This is all thanks to new technologies and much better production methods. Those used in recent decades show the power of science and technology. In the 1970s, American farmers had to raise 140 million heads of cattle in order to meet consumer demand for beef. Today it is 90 million. Between 1964 and 2014, the amount of greenhouse gases associated with the production of a glass of milk decreased by 50%. Thanks to genetics, data, technology and new innovations, we will be able to improve the sustainability of livestock production," says Peck. One example of the impact of science and technology on human life is the African Livestock Productivity and Health Advancement (ALPHA) programme run by Zoetis in sub-Saharan Africa. Under this initiative, Zoetis is increasing the availability of veterinary medicines, establishing permanent diagnostic networks and providing training and education to local farmers. In these areas, the population is extremely dependent on their livestock. It often turns out that a lack of vaccination, or an incompetent diagnosis of the disease leading to the infection of animals, means hunger for the entire families. Zoetis during COVID-19 Zoetis, like most companies in the world, faces the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic. Kristin Peck had to face it less than three months after she took over the company. Zoetis is a big organisation. It has annual revenues of around USD 6 billion and employs over 10,000 people worldwide. As the analysts stress, the company has a very balanced revenue policy, as it is divided 50/50 in terms of products for pets and livestock. Unlike many pharmaceutical companies, Zoetis is not dependent on any particular product. The best-selling drug, Apoquel, generated less than 10% of all sales in 2019. Kristin Peck pointed out at the results conference that Zoetis expects worse figures this year, because some 3% of sales used to come from the Chinese market, and the global economic slowdown could affect the results. But Peck doubts that the coronavirus will stop the long-term trend of eating more protein. Even if it does, Zoetis will benefit from selling its products aimed at poultry. Kristine Peck and helping women Kristine Peck received the “Feather In Her Cap 2019” award for her involvement in the development of her employees, launching a leadership programme at Zoetis that provides training, mentoring and participation in strategic projects. Kristin Peck is also personally a mentor for many women in Zoetis. Peck herself has written a book on motherhood and her experiences with it. Together with her husband, she has gone through a long and traumatic journey, including five miscarriages, a surrogate mother's miscarriage, several infertility treatments and a story with a murderous nurse. Kristin Peck has two children today. In her book she encourages women never to give up their dreams of building a family. - Many women go through the same things, but do not talk about it. Therefore, the aim of this book is to help women who have fertility problems so that they do not feel lonely, and to build a certain dialogue about this," says Peck. The book was based on Kristin's notes, which her husband encouraged her to record. Peck wrote down all of her thoughts and poured difficult emotions on paper. The e-book was published by Kindle Publishing. President Zoetis points out in her memoirs that she wanted sympathy from those around her, but often received good advice in return, which was neither helpful nor comforting. "'People often said to me: You need to relax, some things could work properly, if it were not for your stress. I just wanted to hear: I'm sorry, I love you. I am here for you. What can I do to help you?" - writes Peck. All the proceeds from the book are donated to charity.
