<ul class="summary-list"><li>Criminal gangs are helping students cheat on exams in India, according to The Wall Street Journal.</li><li>Cheating has, in particular, plagued India's highly competitive medical entrance exam.</li></ul>India's massive examination machine is floundering.This year, the country's primary testing body — the National Testing Agency (NTA) — has faced a series of controversies.They range from exam delays and cancellations to more serious allegations of errors in questions and leaked papers.While NTA officials have denied that any exam papers were leaked the federal education minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, told the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cv22wl82yldo">BBC</a> in June that "some irregularities" had been found.Now, it seems some are taking advantage of the examination chaos.According to the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.wsj.com/world/india/gangs-are-making-millions-helping-indians-cheat-on-exams-32500cce">Wall Street Journal, some middle-class families are paying criminal gangs thousands </a>to help their children get the upper hand on these exams.<h2 id="5266815a-7004-480f-a5ba-395977759d6c">Cheating in India's medical entrance exam</h2>Cheating has, in particular, plagued India's highly competitive medical entrance exam, also known as the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET).This year, around 2.4 million students in India took the exam, competing for medical college seats totaling about 0.02% of that number."Very few people crack it on the first try," one student, who asked not to be named for privacy reasons, told Business Insider.She spent a year preparing for the undergraduate and postgraduate exams, respectively. During this time, she woke up at 4 a.m. and studied for at least 10-12 hours each day.Some prefer to take an easier route.The Journal found that several students had paid $15,000-20,000 to illegally look at the question paper before the exam. BI could not independently verify the figures.The police made multiple arrests related to exam cheating after results showed that 67 people received perfect scores in the NEET exams this year."Question papers are sold at extravagantly high prices," Ashok Rathore, a police officer who investigated cheating linked to India's medical school exam, told the Journal. "It's a nexus of desperate students, parents, tuition centers and printing presses."<h2 id="378edaf6-be36-458e-8847-661e66638c81">Leaked questions</h2>One student told BI that several Telegram channels dedicated to exam prep saw messages encouraging students "struggling with exams and don't have time for studies" to get in touch for "help.""My friend said he was asked to pay around 15,000 rupees ($180) to enter the private channel where they shared the questions," she said.BI reached out to the Telegram account offering "help". The person said they can provide next year's medical entrance exam questions for around 1 lakh rupees ($1,200).High ranks in these exams mean coveted "seats" in medical colleges operated by the state and national governments. Those with money can still legally obtain places in private medical colleges if they pay fees ranging from $115,000 to $145,000.However, some students with the financial capacity prefer cheating and getting a government seat instead."It makes very good economic sense," a senior medical advisor with knowledge of the matter told BI. "The question paper will be given for about 25 lakh rupees (around $29,000). For that much, they get a free seat in a government college where they only have to pay around 16,000 rupees ($190) per annum.""For the entire five-year degree, that still only comes to around one lakh rupees ($1191), so of course rich students would rather do that instead of paying their way into private medical schools."<h2 id="4ff61c3d-756d-47c9-8f47-2f6be9f1f6a0">Earning a 'merit' seat</h2>The advisor — who preferred to remain anonymous but whose identity is known to BI — also said there is a significant amount of respect that comes with having "earned" a merit seat instead of paying their way into a private "management" seat."Unfortunately, there are very few objective metrics that people have as outsiders to judge the competence of their doctors, especially at a time when everybody in India sits with an MBBS board outside their clinic," agreed Asish George, a doctor who cleared the entrance exam in 2014."For those people, the fact that someone cracked a highly competitive entrance exam and got in would inspire more confidence than someone who paid their way through the whole thing."According to the Journal, authorities in India have tried to install video cameras inside exam halls and increased their monitoring of social media to catch cheaters. But many are still finding ways to illegally gain the upper hand, at a high price. The NTA did not immediately respond to a request by BI for comment.

India's exam system is in chaos, with some families paying thousands to help their kids cheat

New Delhi: Markets regulator <keyword id="19901201" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sebi" source="keywords">Sebi</keyword> on Tuesday proposed relaxing net-worth, qualification and experience requirements for <keyword id="22695845" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="investment-advisers-and" source="keywords">investment advisers and</keyword> research analysts, a move aimed at curbing the activities of unregulated <keyword id="22205854" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="financial-influencers" source="keywords">financial influencers</keyword>. The proposals will simplify and reduce registration requirements and compliance costs for <keyword id="21253972" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="investment-advisers" source="keywords">Investment Advisers</keyword> (IAs) and Research Analysts (RAs) registered with Sebi, the regulator said. In its consultation paper, Sebi has proposed to relax minimum qualification from post-graduate to graduate degree and remove the experience requirement for registration as investment advisers and research analysts. Currently, IAs and RAs are required to obtain the prescribed certifications from NISM at the time of registration. They are required to obtain the same base certifications before expiry of validity of such certifications. Additionally, the regulator has proposed to abolish the requirement of maintaining minimum net worth by IAs and RAs. Instead, it has proposed that IAs/RAs should maintain a deposit with the stock exchange, based on the number of clients. For up to 150 clients, investment advisers or research analysts will have to maintain a deposit of Rs 1 lakh, for 150 to 300 clients, they need to maintain Rs 2 lakh, for 300 to 1,000 clients, the deposit requirement will be Rs 5 lakh and for over 1,000 clients, the requirement will be Rs 10 lakh. Also, Sebi has proposed allowing individuals or partnership firms to register as both IA and RA and allow individuals or partnership firms engaged in non-securities businesses to register as IA/RA. Sebi noted that the Indian securities market has seen a significant increase in domestic investors due to market growth and technical advancements. However, the number of registered Investment Advisers and Research Analysts remains low compared to the large investor base, especially when compared to countries like the United States. "This is leading to proliferation of the unregistered entities acting as IAs and RAs," it added. To ensure investors can make informed decisions and to support the growth in wealth creation, a larger number of registered IAs and RAs is needed, the Sebi said. Recently, Sebi board approved a series of measures on restricting the play of fin-influencers, which focus mainly on policing the segment through their tie-ups with the entities regulated by Sebi. Also, senior Sebi officials in the recent past have said that challenges to get registered as an investment advisor are among the reasons for growth in the problematic fin-influencers segment. The registered investment advisors have said that getting and maintaining the registration is an onerous task due to which their numbers are low. On January 25, six <keyword id="48426" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="MBBS" source="Orion">MBBS</keyword> graduates had filed a plea in the Supreme Court seeking postponement of the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) scheduled on March 12 for admissions in postgraduate medical courses, claiming that many MBBS graduates would not be able to take up the examination due to non-completion of the mandatory internship period. Dr B Srinivas, Assistant Director General (Medical Education) and Member Secretary of the <keyword id="1873824" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="medical-counselling-committee" source="Orion">Medical Counselling Committee</keyword>, in a communication sent to Dr M Bajpai, executive director of NBE, said that a lot of representations were being received from medical doctors requesting to postpone the NEET-PG 2022 examination as it was clashing with the NEET PG 2021 counselling. Also, many of the interns would not be able to participate in the PG counselling 2022 in May-June, Srinivas said. "Keeping the above facts in view, the HFM (ministry of health and family welfare) has taken the decision to postpone NEET PG 2022 by 6-8 weeks or suitably. Hence, the decision made by HFM may be complied with," the communication sent on February 3 stated. Indian School of Business ranked 1st in India, 44th globally as per MBA Ranking 2021 by The Economist

<ul><li>B-schools should have access to internships and placement opportunities for students. </li><li>Of the total 360,000 students enrolling in postgraduate courses in India, only 60% land a management job. </li><li>Management has been the hottest sector to enroll in, for internships, at nearly 47%.</li></ul>Indian employers want MBA graduates who are ready to lead, and provide fresh ideas. However, fresh graduates are walking into campus placements with nothing but bookish knowledge. This is because many B-schools are unable to provide their students with a basic internship programme. And, that is affecting their employability too. “Companies want to hire ready-to-lead managers whereas most of the B-Schools lack access to meaningful internships and placement opportunities,” ET <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/jobs/employability-of-graduates-from-new-and-lower-tier-b-schools-a-challenge-aima-director-general/articleshow/70468701.cms?from=mdr">reported</a> citing Rekha Sethi, director general, AIMA. Warning! Do not apply to B-schools that don't offer access to internships

<ul><li>With growing affluence and technology, the pace of consumerism in India’s small towns is growing fast, say experts.</li><li>Their love for premium products, products that exhibit self-love and care is driving them to shop online.</li><li>A confluence of technology, growing income levels, education and more has caused a cultural shift in small towns. </li></ul>India’s small towns have been running behind big cities for a long time — but that’s no longer true. Thanks to the juxtaposition of technology, rising income levels and policies – small towners are not what they once were. The biggest generational change is that — few dream of living in a big city. While most of them do not want to migrate, rising job opportunities, availability of first-grade educational institutions are ensuring they do not have to. “The pandemic has also ensured reverse migration where they can generate more income and enjoy a livelihood thanks to the digital revolution,” said Suraja Kishore, CEO of BBDO, an advertising agency, speaking at a webinar organized by Market Research Society of India (MRSI). Moreso, they are not unhappy with where they’re from either. “If you see, many of them introduce themselves with their district name and village name,” said Kishore, emphasizing on how strong their sense of identity has become. The Western sanskaris It’s not just attitudes that are changing – their income levels are rising almost on-par with their urban counterparts too. While the all-India urban average monthly household income has been growing at 8.4% for the last five years, it has been growing at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.8% in tier 2 and tier 3 cities, says Kantar. The number of graduates and postgraduates have also been growing at the exact same rate of 5.6% CAGR in urban areas as well as T2 and T3 cities, it adds. All this has been bringing a cultural shift in small towns, says Aditya Kaul, group account director at Kantar. “They enjoy the comfort of online shopping, and are also embracing Westernization at a faster rate, with the world at their fingertips,” adds Kaul. Kishore also agrees that the trend of trends ‘percolating’ from the West to big cities of India, and then to towns is gone. Love, thy self Now, liberated, small towners are also becoming consumers of premium products. “They are expressing affluence with an increasing focus on comfort and self-love. They are high on individualism, outspoken and more ambitious,” Kaul says. Kaul concurs, “There is a higher pace of growing consumerism in small towns along with growing individualism, outspokenness and more ambition.” It’s very much evident from their spending and buying habits. E-tailing or electronic retailing has been growing at 37% CAGR in T2 and T3 cities as compared to 20% in urban areas – between 2019 and 2022. While a large part of this change is credited to mobile telephony and technology, there are other factors at play too. “A lot of factors came together like government policy and economic growth. If technology had come when there was no money, or even policies were not aligned, it would have been different,” explains Aashish Shukla, consumer and market insights lead at ITC. Raw, not refined According to Kantar, as many as half the ‘urban consumers’ between 15-55 years, at around 139 million of them, reside in T2 and T3 towns. And their number is growing in small cities and towns beyond that too. The new-age consumers are growing in affluence and becoming more demanding, but are they easy to market to? The answer is not so easy, say branding and marketing experts. “In small towns, products have to be customized to their reality. For example, if they buy a mobile phone, they cannot courier in case of a defect to a service center in a bigger town and it takes a few months etc,” says Shukla. For a long time, small towns and villages have been bringing in volumes for FMCG giants due to their consumption of smaller sized packs, and most of them did away with smaller stock keeping units that served this purpose. That might no longer work, especially after many local brands – some offline and some completely online – have been creeping into the market and making a dent. Not only are these brands — across food, beauty and personal care — challenging large FMCG giants, they’re also winning hearts with their earthy flavour and feel. “They are sharper with their marketing and are heavily expanding. If you talk to many of them, they do not have local ambitions, they all want to expand nationally and internationally,” says Kishore. The urban and non-urban areas were divided on the basis of spending power, preferences and urbanization levels. But those theories are being unwound by the new consumer cohort that’s westernizing without urbanizing, buys premium products online without visiting malls – and racing ahead to a new reality.

The rising affluence of small town consumers driving demand for premium products

<ul><li>Jammu &amp; <keyword id="6354495" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="kashmir">Kashmir</keyword> state government called unemployed professionals to register on District Employment and Counseling Centers. </li><li>As many as 150,000 educated youth — with post-graduate degree or more— registered on the database over a span of 15 days. </li><li>According to the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy(CMIE) data from 2017, Jammu and Kashmir was recorded with highest unemployment rate in India at 12.13%. </li><li>Government recorded 30,000 unemployed youth within two days of the initiative — with 20,000 from Kashmir alone.</li></ul>Around 150,000 youngsters in Jammu &amp; Kashmir are jobless. What is worse is that they are highly educated, holding post-graduate and doctoral degrees. Job seekers rushed to <a href="https://www.greaterkashmir.com/news/front-page-2/in-15-days-more-than-1-5-lakh-jobless-postgraduates-register-with-govt/">register</a> themselves after the state government asked unemployed professionals to register in District Employment and Counseling Centers. Within 15 days, the centers saw over 100,000 registrations. In fact, as many as 30,000 unemployed youth registered within two days. And, 20,000 registered from Kashmir alone. The Directorate of Employment wants to collect data on those who hold postgraduate, M. Phil, and PhD degrees and yet unemployment. This will help them find a solution to the looming job crisis. “It will help the government launch a comprehensive employment scheme for youth who are not suitably employed,” Saurabh Bhagat, Labour and Employment Department<a href="https://kashmirreader.com/2019/07/13/30000-postgraduates-register-as-unemployed-in-just-2-days/"> told </a>a local daily Kashmir Reader. The exercise can also help drive policy-level change. “The issue of educated but unemployed youth was raised by officials in recent meetings with Home Minister <keyword id="6355521" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="amit-shah">Amit Shah</keyword>. He assured that some initiative for youth of J&amp;K would be started,” Kashmir Reader <a href="https://kashmirreader.com/2019/07/13/30000-postgraduates-register-as-unemployed-in-just-2-days/">reported</a> citing government officials. In 2017, the unemployment rate in the state was at 12.13%, according to the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE). In 2016, the unemployment rate in the state hit an extremely high rate of 24.6% amongst youth aged between 18 and 29. This is in line with announcements made during the budget session which said that ‘degree-level’ full-fledged online courses will be launched in India to provide quality education to the underprivileged. “It is a start. The COVID crisis has brought in some sort of urgency and awareness to the medium of online being a very effective and highly penetrable one,” said Ronnie Screwvala, Executive Chairman and Co-Founder of upGrad. The cost of enrolling in these online degree programs will vary according to the course. “The programmes that we are launching with Jamia Hamdard will cost nearly ₹50,000 annually. While the LLM and MBA programme with OP Jindal University will largely cater to working professionals, it will be priced between ₹2-2.5 lakh on an annual basis,” Kumar added. The platform witnessed a 360% jump in users in the COVID lockdown period, compared to the last quarter. upGrad agrees that the completion rate for such courses also witnessed growth. “Today, online is allowing us to reach tier 2, 3, 4 and tier 5 cities. This includes the large rural segment as well. The blended approach that online learning brings allows us to be able to provide access to the best universities across rural India,” Screwvala added. Government’s push for online degrees To kickstart the learning calendar for students, the Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, on May 17, announced that the top 100 educational institutions in India will be automatically allowed to start courses online from May 30, 2020. Under this, the courses will be taught via live interactions and aired on TV channels for students from 1st to 12th grade to access it. It will also introduce at least 12 educational channels to keep the learning continuity for students. As many as 200 textbooks have been added to e-pathshala and 61 crore students have accessed the courses on Diksha platform, as on March 24. Given the delay in the academic year, the government has also tied up with private DTH operators like Tata Sky to air educational content on TV. The students and teachers can also communicate with experts via skype.

The CSC will nominate 39 candidates for the scholarship. The scholarship will extend to courses such as science and technology for development; strengthening health systems and capacity; promoting global prosperity; strengthening global peace, security and governance; strengthening resilience and response to crises. It will include living expenses, tuition fees and the airfare. The merit list will shortlist university on the basis of ‘QS Ranking 2020’ ranking for the selected course. The one-year postgraduate courses are to commence from October 2020. However, these courses will not be valid as per the Indian education system, which validates only two-year postgraduate programmes. Indian government launches scholarship for one-year postgraduate in the UK

India’s most prestigious institution for medicine All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) is expected to announce the results of <keyword id="8164002" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="AIIMS-PG-2020">AIIMS PG 2020</keyword> entrance exam on Saturday, i.e November 22, 2019. The applicants can check the result on the official website at aiimsexam.org. The selected candidates will also have to appear for the medical examination. The entrance exam was held on November 17 for MD, MS, MDS, DM, MCh. And the minimum cut off score was 50 percentile. The registration for July session will begin a week after the declaration of result, on November 27, 2019. The admissions will begin on January 1, 2020 and the counselling will take place in February. Only seven of the total 15 AIIMs institutes offer postgraduate courses. The total number of seats across AIIMS centres in Delhi, Jodhpur, Patna, Raipur, Rishikesh, Bhubaneswar and Bhopal is 546.
