Cyclist Stephen, passing through India Gate, where the AQI stood around 317 post-Diwali, said, "Because of the pollution, terrible things are happening. The pollution came on very suddenly this time. There was nothing just a few days ago, and now my brother has fallen sick. I used to come here to cycle with my brother, but he has been severely affected by the pollution lately. And today, the pollution is extreme." "There were so many fireworks and other things yesterday that I couldn't even sleep. We've been really troubled; my brother is in terrible shape. What else can we do? It's taking a toll on his body—his throat hurts, it's hard to breathe, he has a cold, and his eyes are irritated. There's so much; we don't even know everything that's happening. While cycling, it's hard to keep our eyes open." "I came here to go cycling, but now it's a big problem. There's a lot of coughing, and I'm having trouble cycling. This pollution is much worse, especially due to the fireworks, bombs, and kids playing with fireworks. It's even affecting vehicles, and it's really bad. It could lead to cancer or other serious illnesses," another cyclist, John, told ANI. The pollution issue wasn't limited to Delhi; several other cities across India, including metropolises like Chennai and Mumbai, reported similar conditions, with smog and poor air quality affecting large areas. The CPCB data shows significant pollution levels, especially after Diwali celebrations, raising concerns about air quality and potential health impacts nationwide. When asked about the selling of crackers in the city, the Delhi Environment Minister mentioned that the Delhi Police would increase patrolling at night to monitor the situation. "The police are actively working to control the sale of crackers. Patrolling will be increased at night for safety. But I still ask, why is it necessary to burn crackers? As human beings, it's our duty not to pollute the city," he underlined. Gopal Rai also shared that the Delhi government is monitoring the situation closely. "We are addressing incidents of firecracker use, and the police are working on this on the ground. Such activities at night will also be addressed. But more than enforcement, we must protect our environment. We are monitoring everything, and the Delhi government will take necessary steps as the situation demands," he added.

The Anand Vihar station was in the 'severe' category with PM 10 at 500 and PM 2.5 at 473 while the CO was at 131, under 'moderate' category, as per the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) at 10 a.m. At the Bawana station PM 2.5 reached 469, in the severe category and PM 10 at 376 was in the 'very poor' category, while the CO reached 78, in satisfactory levels and NO2 at 12, in the 'good' category. At the Dwarka sector-8 station, the PM 2.5 reached 444, in the severe category while PM 10 was at 360 under the 'very poor' category on Monday morning. The air quality at the Indira Gandhi International Airport T3 area was in the 'severe' category with PM 2.5 at 431 and PM 10 at 295, in the 'poor' category. At ITO station, the PM 2.5 crossed over 500, in the severe plus category while PM 10 was recorded at 457 in the severe category. The NO2 reached 121 in the moderate category while CO was at 92, in satisfactory levels. The PM 2.5 at Jahangirpuri was recorded at 486 while PM 10 reached 420, placing both under 'severe' category. Carbon monoxide (CO) reached 84, in 'satisfactory' levels and NO2 was at 11, in the 'good' category. At north campus <keyword id="66" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="delhi" source="Orion">Delhi</keyword> University station, the PM 2.5 reached 457 and PM 10 at 405, in the 'severe' category while the CO was at 89, in a 'satisfactory' level. The AQI between zero and 50 is considered 'good'; 51 and 100 'satisfactory'; 101 and 200 'moderate'; 201 and 300 'poor'; 301 and 400 'very poor'; and 401 and 500 'severe'.

A bench of Chief Justice S A Bobde and Justices A S Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian posted the pleas related to air pollution for hearing after the Diwali vacation. The Centre on Thursday appointed former Chief Secretary of Delhi M M Kutty chairperson of the Commission for Air Quality Management in National Capital Region and Adjoining Areas. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre, informed the bench that the commission on Air Quality Management will start functioning from Friday and the government has appointed members of the commission as well. On October 29, the top court was informed by the Centre that it has come out with an Ordinance on curbing pollution and it has been promulgated already. Approaching the winter season Delhi breached the 'severe' category as the AQI stood at 408 at 7 am on Thursday morning. Delhiites woke up to a thick envelope of smog as air quality in the national capital and in adjoining regions, dipped into severe category again. The Air Quality Index (AQI) in the national capital at 8 am was at 364 (in the 'Very Poor' category) and at 7 am the recorded AQI stood at 408 ('Severe'). Unfavourable meteorological conditions with slower wind speed and a sudden spike in stubble-burning incidents are attributed to the dip in air quality. Prima facie the cause behind the bad air in Delhi is farm fires in the neighbouring states and vehicular emissions. Both factors are deemed major contributors to air pollution in Delhi. As Delhi is forced to breathe the toxic air, several residents have reported breathing difficulties, with the elderly and schoolchildren being the worst hit. Even, in such circumstances, some parents are of the view that the government should keep the schools open. Akash, who came to drop his child at the Mayor Public School, Vinod Nagar which is part of east Delhi said," These situations are usual post-Diwali. We all struggle to breathe and face so many problems in our body like eye irritation, sore throat and so many changes in our body". "The Government should not close the school despite such circumstances because for children the atmosphere is the same, no matter whether they are in school or at home. Government should work on reducing pollution and how to solve this problem," he added. However, another parent demanded to shut down the schools. "If the air quality in Delhi is deteriorating then schools must be shut down,", said a parent from Pandav Nagar in East Delhi. The National Capital Region (NCR) also witnessed bad air as Noida, which is part of the national capital region, slipped to an AQI of 393, in the 'very poor' category, while <keyword id="11900977" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="gurugram" source="Orion">Gurugram</keyword>'s AQI stood at 318 and continued to remain in the 'very poor category, as per data released by SAFAR (System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research) India.
