The population is currently estimated at 1.45 billion, and it's supposed to increase further to 1.69 billion. "It's supposed to peak around the 2060s in size and then it starts to slightly decline. So by the end of the century, India is projected to be around 1.5 billion, but will still the largest country in the world by a large margin." The report said that China's population, currently 1.41 billion in 2024, will fall to 1.21 billion in 2054 and further decline to 633 million by 2100. "It is anticipated that China, the country currently with the world's second-largest population, will likely experience the largest absolute population loss between 2024 and 2054 (204 million)," followed by <keyword id="6355311" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Japan" source="Orion">Japan</keyword> (21 million) and <keyword id="6358826" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Russia" source="Orion">Russia</keyword> (10 million). And that's true for China. It's true for some other countries in this analysis," Wilmoth said. Currently, nearly one-fifth of all countries and areas, including China, Italy, the Republic of Korea and Spain, are experiencing what is sometimes referred to as "ultra-low" fertility, with fewer than 1.4 live births per woman over a lifetime. The report added that the global fertility rate currently stands at 2.25 live births per woman, down from 3.31 births in 1990. "More than half of all countries and areas globally have fertility below the replacement level of 2.1 live births per woman. Pakistan is projected to overtake the US as the third-largest country in the world, with a population of 389 million in 2054. That's also way below the most recent high of 3.0% in April 2022."The once high-flying quits rate continues to fall and is now below its pre-pandemic level, which could signal both that workers that found good opportunities over the past few years and are happy to stay in their new role, and that workers are feeling less confident about their prospects for finding a new job," Bunker said in written commentary earlier this week.Amid the data seen this week, job seekers and workers "should still feel generally positive," Bunker told BI."If you have a job right now, you're in a good position when it comes to job security," Bunker said. <ul class="summary-list"><li>The Census Bureau released new 2023 estimates that indicate just how much state populations have expanded or shrunk.</li><li>South Carolina was the fastest-growing state from July 1, 2022, to July 1, 2023.</li></ul>While <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cost-of-living-texas-cities-prices-housing-medical-energy-2023-9">Texas</a> had the biggest overall population increase between 2022 and 2023, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-its-like-moving-from-nyc-to-south-carolina-2023-4">South Carolina</a> took the top spot by percent increase during this time.That's based on new population estimates from the Census Bureau showing how the population has changed in each state and Washington, DC, between July 1, 2022, and July 1, 2023."Eleven states that lost population in 2022 are now seeing gains," a new <a target="_blank" href="https://www.census.gov/newsroom/press-releases/2023/population-trends-return-to-pre-pandemic-norms.html">Census Bureau press release</a> about the data said. "For example, four southern states — Texas, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-are-people-moving-florida-home-prices-cost-of-living-2023-12">Florida</a>, North Carolina and Georgia — accounted for 93% of the nation's population growth in 2022, but only 67% in 2023."<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/leaving-california-moving-to-las-vegas-living-in-seattle-2023-12">California</a>, which had the biggest population as of July 2023, saw its population decrease 0.2% from July 1, 2022, to July 1, 2023. That's not as large as New York's 0.5% decline during this time. New York's drop translates to the largest percent decline among the states.Looking beyond individual states, some clear long-running regional trends continued."The expansion of the South — the nation's most populous region — accounted for 87% of the nation's growth in 2023, as the region added over 1.4 million residents for a total population of 130,125,290," the press release said.The Northeast, however, saw the population fall by 43,330 to 56,983,517. The press release noted that this decrease for the region "was considerably smaller" than the population drops it experienced in 2021 and 2022.Much of the increase in the fastest-growing states came from immigration and people moving across the US. Looking at net migration figures by state, Florida, Texas, North Carolina, and South Carolina saw high net migration figures relative to other states.Adjusting by the population as of July 1, 2022, South Carolina and Florida had the highest net migration rates per capita. South Carolina and Delaware had the highest rates when looking specifically at net domestic migration, or people moving into those states from elsewhere in the US."U.S. migration returning to pre-pandemic levels and a drop in deaths are driving the nation's growth," Kristie Wilder, a demographer in the Population Division at the Census Bureau, said via the press release. "Although births declined, this was tempered by the near 9% decrease in deaths. Here's how every US state's population changed in 2023

<ul class="summary-list"><li>New York City recently conducted its annual survey of the unsheltered homeless.</li><li>The count lasts all night and sends 1,500 volunteers to survey five boroughs.</li></ul>Shortly after 10 p.m. on a chilly Tuesday night in January, New York City's top officials gathered in an elementary school gymnasium in midtown Manhattan.Mayor Eric Adams, flanked by officials from the Departments of Social Services and Homeless Services, kicked off the city's annual Homeless Outreach Population Estimate. The city was about to send 1,500 volunteers to all five boroughs to collect data on the unsheltered homeless."We are not a city that can walk past people and ignore what our fellow New Yorkers are going through," Adams said. "There's something powerful about just four simple letters: HOPE."Cities nationwide annually conduct a point-in-time homeless count overnight to get an idea of how many people live in unsheltered conditions. New York City has been keeping count this way since 2005.Last year's results, announced in late June, tallied more than 4,000 people who were unsheltered on a single night in January 2023. This year's count is expected to be <a target="_blank" href="https://ny1.com/nyc/all-boroughs/housing/2024/01/24/volunteers-hit-streets-for-annual-homeless-survey#">impacted by the influx of immigrants</a> from the nation's southern border.<h2>How New York counts its homeless population</h2><div type="image" title="Mayor Eric Adams flanked by city officials and volunteers at the city's 2024 Homeless Outreach Population Estimate." height="1536" width="2048" msid="107405166" hostid="261" sizebytes="218850"></div>After Adams left, outreach staffers trained the volunteers, myself among them, to conduct the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nyc.gov/assets/dhs/downloads/pdf/hope/HOPE-2023-Survey.pdf">surveys</a> that asked whether respondents were sheltered or unsheltered and where they planned to sleep for the night.After an hour of training, groups with half a dozen volunteers each disbanded to cover the whole city. We began at exactly midnight and were instructed to quit after we completely surveyed our assigned areas or the clock struck 4 a.m. — whichever came first.The areas we were assigned were precise, from the street number down to which side of the street we were canvassing. Some teams were assigned subways and subway stations while others were above ground in the streets, parks, and other public areas. Depending on the area, teams needed police escorts. My team was given several blocks near Gramercy and Kips Bay in Manhattan, areas with low poverty rates; no such escort was needed.It was a Code Blue night, meaning the outside temperature was freezing or near to it. In warmer conditions, volunteers would be instructed not to wake any sleeping homeless people so as not to disturb them. Given the Code Blue, we were instructed to wake them anyway and ask if they needed to be relocated to a shelter.My team canvased for about two-and-a-half hours, tallying nearly a dozen homeless people. We had long conversations with some. Others did not want to answer questions. Some had language barriers. In order to speak with one couple, we phoned a translation service provided by the city and discovered the couple had been turned away from a women-only shelter nearby.According to the city-provided information packet on shelters, a shelter should have been nearby that accepted families without children, which would have been ideal for this couple, who said they were married. We walked a few blocks with them, speaking with them through the translator over the phone as we tried to find the correct facility.The address information was outdated, however, and the only nearby option was the womens-only shelter. The homeless woman said, via the translator, that she had already spent one night at that shelter and had been told she could sleep inside but wouldn't get a bed. In the end, she took up the offer, becoming separated from her husband with no way to stay in contact.Later on, an older man hauling several canvas bags skirted questions about his sleeping arrangements. He told us he wouldn't want us to be in his position. He spoke at length about the rich elite hogging the world's resources while the majority of people beg for scraps. He told us to harness our youth and do good things in the world.It was clear that not everyone trusted us. We were there on behalf of the city, after all. It was a reality the organizers warned we might face. We came across some people who declined to speak to us. One person declined to speak to us through the wall of their tent. Others crossed the street or just kept walking.The evening was a stark reminder of the distinctions between the city's haves and have-nots and the challenges anyone who seeks to help will face.Even minor obstacles — like communication barriers or distance to the nearest clean bed — can mute the impact of outreach and assistance."They don't have a home, but they're very connected to the community. And if we say, 'We know you're in Queens, but we've got a bed for you in the Bronx,' they're just not going to come," DSS Commissioner Molly Wasow Park told BI. "So by knowing where people are, being able to allocate resources according to the trends that we're seeing, we're really increasing the likelihood that people are going to come inside. And coming inside is the first step to permanent housing."

I volunteered to help New York City track its homeless population. Here's what I learned.

<ul><li>Over 43% of India’s <keyword id="420602" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="working-population" source="Orion">working population</keyword> is either <keyword id="22732" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="anxious" source="Orion">anxious</keyword>, <keyword id="6423701" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="depressed" source="Orion">depressed</keyword> or <keyword id="125939" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="isolated" source="Orion">isolated</keyword>, says a report.</li><li>The <keyword id="6354774" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mental-health" source="Orion">mental health</keyword> of Indians is keeping over half of them from performing effectively at work.</li><li>Employees without emergency savings are 60% more likely to find it difficult to concentrate on their work.</li><li>The 20-29 age group are significantly worse off than people under 40 with a low mental health score. </li></ul>Over half of <keyword id="479445" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-employees" source="Orion">Indian employees</keyword> are logging off work feeling exhausted and over 60% of them notice their colleagues feeling stressed, says the Asian Mental Health index report by Aon and TELUS Health. Moreover, over 43% of India’s working population is either anxious, depressed or isolated, says the report which surveyed 13,000 workers living across 12 Asian countries. “The Mental Health Index score for India is 64, indicating that the mental health of employees there is strained despite being 1.6 points higher than the median,” the report said. An index over 80 is considered optional while a figure between 50 and 79 is considered ‘strained’ and anything below that is considered distressed. <div type="image" title="Untitled_Artwork (4)" msid="103664890" hostid="261"></div> The mental health of Indians is keeping over half of them – 53% – from performing effectively at work. And over 45% say that they find it more difficult concentrating on work than they did last year. India ranks among the nations where the highest proportion of employees face productivity difficulties. Mental health problems can result in low employee engagement, absenteeism and presenteeism, and increased turnover. The most prevalent mental health conditions, such as depression and anxiety, are estimated to cost the global economy $1 trillion per year in reduced productivity. <div type="image" title="Untitled_Artwork (3)" msid="103664918" hostid="261"></div> Emergency fund &amp; inner peace It’s not just work-related exhaustion and burnout that’s troubling to the working age population of Asian nations. Financial insecurity is also amongst the likely causes. “Other factors may include cost-of-living challenges, rising healthcare costs, climate change impacts, geopolitical instability, and the increasingly complex and ambiguous nature of today’s workplace, which has been changing rapidly since Covid-19,” the report reads. As many as 33% of Indians surveyed said that they have an emergency fund to cover over three months of essential expenses – and a similar percentage said that they can get by with their funds for two months. While 21% intend to start one in the current year, 8% believe they can get by on credit without an emergency fund. These funds are a key factor in deciding workplace productivity as employees without emergency savings are 60% more likely to find it more difficult to concentrate on their work as compared to those with emergency savings, the report says. <div type="image" title="Untitled_Artwork (2)" msid="103664935" hostid="261"></div> The young are tired Yet another key finding of the report is that older employees are fitter mentally. Employees under 40 particularly feel the strain of poor mental health. The 20-29 age group are significantly worse off with a mental health index score of 57.8. “It represents the most strain and the highest mental health risk of any age group by a significant margin,” the report says. Under 40s are 50% more likely than over 50s to feel mentally and or physically exhausted at the end of their workday – indicating that the older group of employees are handling work much better than their younger colleagues.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>In recent years, high costs have contributed to an exodus of residents from California.</li><li>But the Central Valley is booming, making it one of the few areas with sustained growth.</li></ul>For generations, California's climate, its economic strength, and an attraction to the West buoyed the appeal of California living, which made it the most populous state in the country.But the 2020 Census revealed a stunning statistic: California's population growth had slowed in the prior decade, which resulted in the state's <a target="_blank" href="https://calmatters.org/politics/2021/04/california-congress-census/">first-ever loss</a> of a congressional district.Many of those residents left population centers such as Los Angeles and San Francisco because of their skyrocketing housing costs, which strained working- and middle-class families.But California's Central Valley's population is booming, with higher birth rates and substantial migration from more expensive coastal counties driving the growth, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.economist.com/united-states/2023/11/09/california-is-losing-people-but-this-region-wouldnt-know-it">according to The Economist</a>.According to estimates from the California Department of Finance, the Central Valley — the heart of the state's agricultural industry — and other inland counties are <a target="_blank" href="https://dof.ca.gov/wp-content/uploads/sites/352/2023/07/Projections_Methodology.pdf">projected</a> to have the fastest population growth in the Golden State through 2060.The Economist reported that more San Francisco residents migrated to nearby Alameda County — which includes the cities of Berkeley and Oakland — than any other destination during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. And, during that same period, nearly a quarter of former Alameda residents found new homes in two neighboring counties further away from the coast.<div type="image" title="San Francisco" height="3648" width="5472" msid="105155141" hostid="261"></div>The phenomenon is not limited to the Bay Area.In Southern California, roughly a quarter of transplants from Los Angeles County moved to nearby Riverside and San Bernardino counties — in the Inland Empire region — during the first year of the pandemic.In Northern California's Central Valley, San Joaquin County is poised to become a primary beneficiary of this inward migration. The state is projecting that the Northern California county will have almost 1 million residents by 2060, up from its current population of about 780,000.Housing construction, which has drawn swaths of Bay Area residents looking for a more affordable place to live, is driving the boom in San Joaquin County.While some conservatives have blamed the overall population slowdown on California's largely liberal-leaning politics, the numbers show that while hundreds of thousands of residents are <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/california-texas-moving-arizona-florida-expensive-housing-costs-washington-nevada-2023-10">leaving</a> the Golden State, the high cost of living is mostly driving them out.
