They figured it was probably just a fisherman down by the creek, so the couple decided to follow their pooch down to the water, with Ron in a golf cart and Cindy on foot. Once they got to the creek, they saw a man's head pop up over a four-foot-tall bank; he told them he was camping, the couple said.Cindy Ecklund said she and her husband immediately recognized the man as Michael Charles Burham, an escaped inmate who had been held on kidnapping charges at the Warren County Jail and was a suspect in a New York homicide case.During the week-long manhunt for Burham, his picture had been all over the news, the couple told Insider."My husband said, 'Get in the golf cart,'" Cindy Ecklund said. The more we treat them as substitute humans, the likelier we are to spend on luxury treats for them — and a few canny businesses have spotted the potential for profit.<h2>Designer brands are increasingly moving beyond human customers to 4-legged ones</h2>At A. Houndmarch, along with dog treats, customers can buy £150 dog collars and £125 poop bags (and poop-bag charms) and mingle with dog therapists and caricaturists. Over the five weeks the pop-up was open to the public, Hindmarch told Insider that more than 3,000 dogs and their owners passed through its door. "It was so charming, and such an insight into humanity and what pets really do for people," she said. She told Insider the rise in demand is fueled mainly by wealthy millennials. "As they become higher earners than before, they can spend on things that have less of a functional purpose," she said. "And as they're having children later, they're adopting pets and transferring some of their parenting urges onto them first. It has created an opportunity for niche products that makes pets' lives more comfortable. It's about pampering their dogs now and giving them the best."Hindmarch said she stumbled into her pup-powered project almost accidentally, after launching a different collection the previous year and seeing that response. "It was all things you might need when walking, so a dog-poop bag was part of it — that was the piece that showed us the potential to expand the project because it sold so well," she said. "And we said, 'OK, let's lean into dogs, because it's a fun area, and we love fashion with a purpose.'" The project was more than just a PR stunt for Hindmarch — it acted as a bridge to a new clientele that would help expand her business. "Our customers for sure are passionate dog people, but we could also reach a new customer: 'pilgrims' who are dog lovers and came for that. They might look at other products as well." Mandy Madden Kelley, a New Zealander now living in LA, launched Pagerie two years ago, having leveraged her social-media fame as a<a href="https://www.instagram.com/mandymadd/?hl=en"> beauty and fashion influencer</a> to get started and find customers in this new sector."All these individuals, dressed head to toe in Chanel, in Dior, or Prada — I remember thinking to myself, 'Wow they look stunning, absolutely flawless,'" she said. "The only thing on the market was the typical high-end fashion brand, making very basic collars and slapping their logo on them and calling it a day. "In LA, people love to go to Runyon Canyon, and I see them hiking with their dog on the weekends and they're doing some type of phone call, multitasking at the same time. The belt bag is designed so you can attach your dog to it and be hands-free. It's for the fast-paced lifestyle," Madden Kelley said.<h2>Trends in human fashion are reflected in what our dogs wear</h2>Flint Beamon has also seen an increasing overlap in what dogs and their owners wear. He's the cofounder of the Texas-based <a href="https://www.bcdk.store/">Barkin Creek Dog Kitchen</a>, an upscale dog brand that offers gourmet food as well as toys, accessories, and grooming. "If you'd told me a year ago I'd be selling beige and nude-pink collars and leashes, I'd have said, 'Of course not,' but now<a href="https://www.gq.com/gallery/the-unabridged-history-of-kanye-west-as-fashion-designerand-the-11-year-road-to-todays-adidas-show"> Ye</a> and <a href="https://affiliate.insider.com?u=https%3A%2F%2Fskims.com%2Fblogs%2Ftv%2Fkim-kardashian-west-on-the-skims-body-collection">Kim Kardashian</a> are producing products in these colors — people follow the trends," he told Insider. "We have people from all walks of life coming in. I have little old ladies on Social Security, someone who wants to make sure she's feeding her 12-year-old toothless chihuahua something they can eat and enjoy."Data supports Beamon's thesis. Mintel <a href="https://www.mintel.com/press-centre/social-and-lifestyle/whatever-it-takes-47-of-us-pet-owners-say-they-are-willing-to-go-into-debt-to-pay-for-their-pets-medical-care">conducted an in-depth study in 2020</a> that found the market for pet-care products and services had grown 30% in the preceding five years, powered mostly by pet food. Eighty percent of those Mintel surveyed said they enjoyed spoiling their pet.Boesel recalled a focus group that exemplified this mindset. "One woman told us she might switch from serving her dog chicken breasts to chicken thighs, but she'd rather just buy a cheaper Scotch for herself," she said.As its name makes clear, Barkin Creek Dog Kitchen focuses squarely on dogs rather than cats — mostly, Beamon said, because the business opportunity is much bigger as a result of the different ways we live with each. "Dogs? You take them out in public, but cats stay home — you can't show off the way you can with a dog." Hindmarch agreed with that sentiment. "The market for dogs is more intense. Cats you tend to leave at home. You don't travel with them, they can be left because they're so much more independent. Dogs are more dependent, so the relationship is much deeper. And with my commercial hat on, that means the opportunity is bigger."

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="6360701" type="DEFINITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="spacex">SpaceX</keyword>'s historic first spaceflight with <keyword id="6360409" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Nasa">NASA</keyword> astronauts concluded Sunday when the <keyword id="3150656" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="crew-dragon">Crew Dragon</keyword> spaceship splashed into the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Pensacola, Florida.</li><li>More than a dozen private boats swarmed the floating capsule, flouting US Coast Guard directives to stay clear.</li><li>However, a Florida-based attorney with a maritime law background says those boaters will likely go unpunished. </li></ul>When two NASA astronauts splashed into the Gulf of Mexico on Sunday, marking the successful completion of the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-spacex-astronaut-launch-nasa-is-important-2020-5">first human flight in a SpaceX commercial spacecraft</a>, the first ships on the scene weren't the recovery boats dispatched by Elon Musk's rocket company to bring them home. Instead, Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley were met by at least a dozen civilian boats that crowded the scene, despite warnings from the US Coast Guard.As Morgan McFall-Johnsen <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-flag-boat-disrupts-live-nasa-astronaut-spacex-landing-2020-8">reported for Business Insider on Sunday</a>:After landing, the capsule bobbed in the ocean for about 15 minutes as professional recovery boats sped to retrieve the astronauts — but they weren't alone on the water.The landing site off the coast of Pensacola, Florida, drew a crowd of onlookers in their own boats. Some got close to the spaceship, including a boat flying a Trump flag that sped into view of NASA's live feed.These boaters endangered themselves and others when they decided to approach the area around the spacecraft's landing, according to a statement from the Coast Guard, which was on the scene to supervise. <div type="image" title="crew dragon demo2 splashdown trump flag boat" height="424" width="750" msid="77337540" hostid="261"></div><h2>The Coast Guard can't do much</h2>But, ultimately, the Coast Guard can't punish the curious seafarers with fines, or by revoking their licenses: The SpaceX craft landed in international waters. As John Michelli, a spokesperson for the Coast Guard's eighth district, wrote in an email to Business Insider (emphasis ours):The Coast Guard does not have authority to establish restricted areas for these types of events beyond the navigable waterways of the United States, which in most cases is 12-nautical miles from shore. Without a duly established restricted area, the Coast Guard can advise the boating public of potential safety concerns but cannot issue fines or other violations to recreational boaters who encroached within the recovery zone.<h2>'Screwed the pooch'</h2>Still, the Coast Guard, NASA, and SpaceX could have handled the situation better, said Florida-based personal injury attorney Matt Dolman, who specializes in boating accidents. "NASA screwed the pooch," Dolman said. "They didn't cordon off the area."Still, SpaceX was in charge of the operation, with NASA and the Coast Guard in supporting roles. "We probably need more Coast Guard assets, maybe some more SpaceX and NASA assets as well. What's important is that Bob and Doug got safely on the boat, we were able to keep the area clear for landing, and then ask people to move back as they came a little bit too close," Gwynne Shotwell, the president and COO of SpaceX, said during a post-splashdown briefing. "This was a demonstration mission. This is the time that you go learn about these things. And we'll certainly be better prepared next time."The crowd of boats "was not what we were anticipating," NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said in the same briefing. The Coast Guard had cleared the area ahead of the landing, but after the capsule splashed down, "the boats just made a beeline for it," he said. "We need to do a better job next time for sure."Cordoning off a 10-square-mile area of the Gulf of Mexico would be, of course, be challenging, and require scores of boats and helicopters to make sure boaters weren't drifting into the area. To avoid that massive build-up of resources, Dolman had another, cheaper suggestion for the Coast Guard: Giving boaters several days of advanced notice. The Coast Guard did issue a broadcast notice to mariners on July 29, four days before the scheduled splashdown, along with a radio notice to boaters in the area two hours prior. Those boaters who were in the area were deliberate about going to the site of the splashdown, Dolman said. "It wasn't as if the boaters were just wandering in the area — they would get an alert," he said. Still, not everyone listens to their boat radio. A warning several days in advance that's published in local media would make clear to mariners to stay away from the area. "That's where NASA was kind of ignorant," Dolman said. "They should have published this five to seven days ahead of time."Michelli said the Coast Guard will review the operations — and the unwanted disruption — with NASA and SpaceX. This was the first water landing of a spacecraft since the 1970s, but it's unlikely to be the last."The development of lessons learned will be our next priority moving forward," Michelli wrote in an email.
