Dates for India’s 17th Lok Sabha elections were announced on March 10. The Lok Sabha elections will be held in seven phases starting, April 11, according to the Election Commission of India. The votes will be counted on May 23 and will decide the fate of major political parties in India. Chandigarh sends one member of parliament to the Lok Sabha. Presently, BJP’s Kirron Kher is the sitting MP. She defeated Congress’ Pawan Kumar Bansal by almost 70,000 votes in the last Lok Sabha elections in 2014. He served as the Minister of Railways from 28 October 2012 to 10 May 2013. In 2014, almost 281, 593 women voted. The total number of voters stood at 453,455. He will be locking horns with the other major party candidates including that of AAP and INC in the constituency. This time, AAP is fielding Harmohan Dhawan from here. The results will be counted on May 23. In a first for the country, voting for the four state legislatures, as well as bypolls, will be held alongside with the election for the Parliament. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been pushing for simultaneous elections for both state and central legislatures, but the proposal has faced severe political opposition. Nearly 900 million voters are expected to turn out this year, compared to 814.5 million in 2014. The number of polling stations will be increased from 900,000 in 2014 to 1 million this year. 16 million new voters will be between the age of 18 and 19, compared to 23.1 million in 2014. 1.7 million voter verifiable paper audit trail (VVPAT) machines will be in use after a <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/elections/story/the-many-claims-of-evm-tampering-in-india-1435638-2019-01-21" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">series</a> of allegations of foul play in many state polls in the run up to the general elections in 2019. VVPAT is a second line of independent verification via a printer machine, which is attached to electronic voting machines. When a voter presses the button against the party symbol of their choice on the electronic voting machine (EVM), a paper slip is printed through VVPAT. The slip would contain the poll symbol and name of the candidate and allows voters to verify if their vote has gone to the intended candidate. After the voter views the slip, that slip will be dropped inside a sealed box linked to the EVM. "The Model Code of Conduct comes into effect from today itself in the entire country. Chandigarh: Listing out the measures taken by his government to compensate <keyword id="19934969" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="farmers" source="keywords">farmers</keyword> over this year's subnormal rain, Haryana Chief Minister <keyword id="20928101" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="nayab-singh-saini" source="keywords">Nayab Singh Saini</keyword> countered the <keyword id="19895371" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Congress" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Congress" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Congress">Congress</keyword> criticism over the issue, saying the opposition party would give only "meagre amounts" while it was in power. Stepping up the attack ahead of the possible announcement of assembly polls in the state, <keyword id="20361506" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Saini" source="keywords">Saini</keyword>, addressing a press conference on Friday, hit out at Congress's '<keyword id="22376578" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Haryana-Maange-Hisab" source="keywords">Haryana Maange Hisab</keyword>' campaign and accused it of spreading lies. Asked if he has any information on whether Haryana's poll dates will be announced later in the day, Saini quipped: "Who said so? Polls will be held as per schedule." The chief minister pointed to the recent cabinet decision to compensate farmers affected by less rains at a rate of Rs 2,000 per acre as a bonus. "We have released the first instalment of Rs 525 crore on Friday," he said. All the farmers who have registered on the designated portal will be compensated for their losses, he said. Saini said the BJP-led government in the state has taken several steps for farmers' welfare in the past ten years. "Congress sheds crocodile tears in the name of farmers. They should tell how much crops they procured from farmers in the ten years between 2005-2014," Saini said. Dubbing the 'Haryana Maange Hisab' campaign as a "jhooth ki yatra" (yatra of lies), he added, "Those who are seeking an account from us, I want to show them the mirror and tell them how we are taking decisions in favour of farmers and empowering them," he said. Saini said while the Congress is wearing a mask of honesty these days, everyone knows how farmers' land was "snatched by them in the name of CLU (change of land use)" and handed them over to builders. New Delhi, Jan 9 () The finance ministry on Thursday said 13th tranche of electoral bonds sale will take place from January 13 to January 22.
 Electoral bonds have been pitched as an alternative to cash donations made to political parties as part of efforts to bring transparency in political funding.
 "State Bank of India (SBI), in the XIII phase of sale, has been authorised to issue and encash electoral bonds through its 29 authorised branches from January 13, 2020, to January 22, 2020," the ministry said in a statement.
 The 29 specified SBI branches are in cities such as New Delhi, Chandigarh, Shimla, Srinagar, Dehradun, Gandhinagar, Bhopal, Raipur, Mumbai, Patna, and Lucknow.
 The sale of the first batch of electoral bonds took place from March 1-10, 2018.
 According to provisions of the scheme, electoral bonds can be purchased by a person who is a citizen of India or incorporated or established in India.
 Registered political parties that have secured not less than 1 per cent of the votes polled in the last election of the Lok Sabha or Legislative Assembly will be eligible to receive electoral bonds.
 SBI is the only authorised bank to issue such bonds. A person being an individual can buy electoral bonds, either singly or jointly, with other individuals.
 An electoral bond will be valid for 15 days from the date of issue. No payment would be made to any payee political party if the bond is deposited after expiry of the validity period.
 The bond deposited by any eligible political party into its account would be credited on the same day. NKD CS HRS
