We moved to Paris together in 2014. When the British people voted to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/eu-referendum-reasons-and-analysis-on-a-brexit-vote-2016-6">leave the European Union</a> in 2016, I decided I wanted to live in France long-term.I planned to apply for French citizenship as soon as I could. I didn't know exactly how the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/brexit-and-boris-johnson-explained-2019-9">Brexit vote</a> would impact me at the time, but I wanted to secure my right to vote in French elections or perhaps move elsewhere in the EU later in life.It took me another three years to meet the residency requirements for citizenship. In the meantime, I began paying closer attention to politics in France. As I wasn't yet a citizen, I couldn't vote in 2017's presidential election, leaving me feeling powerless. But I was relieved about the result.For much of its history, French politics has been dominated by two parties, representing the left and right. But in 2017, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-39130072">neither historic party made it to the second round</a>. Emmanuel Macron <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/apr/03/emmanuel-macron-french-presidential-candidate-grassroots-movement">ran with a centrist campaign</a>, while Marine Le Pen, leader of the National Rally, campaigned on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/apr/04/french-presidential-election-how-the-candidates-compare">anti-immigration and nationalist ideals</a>. Her brand of populism had succeeded in the previous year with Trump's election — but failed in France, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/emmanuel-macron-wins-french-presidential-election-in-landslide-marine-le-pen-2017-5">Macron defeated her</a>, becoming France's President.By the time the 2024 elections came around in France and the UK, I was a citizen of both countries and eager to exercise my vote. In the UK, I wanted to remove the unpopular governing party, the Conservatives, from office. In France, I wanted to keep Le Pen's party out.In recent years, I've watched moderate ideals lose out to reactionary politics again and again, from Trump to Brexit to the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.politico.eu/article/mapped-europe-far-right-government-power-politics-eu-italy-finalnd-hungary-parties-elections-polling/">success of hard-right parties in Europe</a> and elsewhere. Britain looked to be moving in the opposite direction with a projected victory for the center-left Labour Party, which made me feel optimistic, but France looked to be heading into reactionary territory.Political disagreements are a normal part of any healthy democracy. But increasingly, these disagreements are about our fundamental values and even the nature of truth itself. With a big election still to come this year in the US, I'm concerned about this move toward the extremes.<h2 id="86ebff10-5fe7-40c0-8b40-c666fa355f56">Politics in France and the UK has been turbulent in recent years</h2>My first national French elections as a voter were in 2022 when the National Rally continued its seemingly unstoppable rise — Le Pen came <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/french-presidential-election-results-2022-macron-wins-rcna25555">closer than ever</a> to the French presidency.Le Pen became leader of France's right-wing populist "National Front" party in 2011 and renamed it "National Rally" in 2018. Despite the rebrand, the party continues to focus on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.france24.com/en/france/20240620-how-france-s-far-right-changed-the-debate-on-immigration">drastically reducing migration</a>. France has seen major social unrest in recent years, including protests against <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/apr/08/nuit-debout-protesters-occupy-french-cities-in-a-revolutionary-call-for-change">labor</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-50971439">pension</a> reforms, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.france24.com/en/20191116-a-year-of-insurgency-how-yellow-vests-left-indelible-mark-on-french-politics">rising fuel costs, and the cost of living</a>. Le Pen has capitalized on a mistrust of mainstream politics, gaining popularity in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/apr/21/counryside-marine-le-pen-forgotten-france-presidential-election-2017">rural</a> areas where some of these <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/dec/21/how-hi-vis-yellow-vest-became-symbol-of-protest-beyond-france-gilets-jaunes">protest movements</a> have been popular.Across the Channel, the political landscape was no less chaotic. The Brexit vote was a seismic shock, and a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uk-brexit-deal-startups-limbo-financial-services-data-2020-12">deal with the EU</a> was only reached years later after Boris Johnson, whom Donald Trump rather unflatteringly labeled "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2019/jul/23/trump-boris-johnson-britain-trump-uk-prime-minister">Britain Trump</a>," came to power in 2019.Johnson's center-right Conservative party had been in power since 2010 and remained so until the July 2024 election. Revelations of<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/partygate-sue-gray-report-details-2022-5"> lockdown-era parties</a> in Johnson's offices forced his resignation in 2022, and life for many Britons kept getting worse under his successors, Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak.As in many other countries, wages were failing to keep up with a sharp rise in the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cost-of-living-crisis-uk-people-turn-to-tiktok-2022-11">cost of living</a>. Years of budget cuts meant public services were <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theguardian.com/society/2023/oct/30/uk-public-services-policy-institute-for-government-report">crumbling</a>. Yet despite bold promises, I feel the government <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bbc.com/news/65647308">failed to address</a> this and seemed more eager to stoke hatred <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/mar/08/stop-the-boats-sunaks-anti-asylum-slogan-echoes-australia-harsh-policy">against migrants</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-68229785">other minorities</a>.One of Rishi Sunak's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-64164339">often repeated pledges</a>, both while in office and campaigning for the 2024 election, was his mission to "stop the boats," referencing the illegal immigrants arriving in Britain via small-craft vessels.Back in France, Macron still held the presidency. He initially ran on a centrist platform in 2017, aiming to find <a target="_blank" href="https://www.standard.co.uk/news/world/emmanuel-macrons-la-republique-en-marche-all-you-need-to-know-about-the-french-presidents-groundbreaking-new-party-ahead-of-the-elections-a3563256.html">common ground</a> between the left and right blocs. However, during his seven years in office, he's been <a target="_blank" href="https://www.lemonde.fr/en/politics/article/2024/01/12/new-french-cabinet-reflects-macron-s-electorate-shift-to-the-right_6426251_5.html">accused of</a> veering to the right, appointing ministers who deny police <a target="_blank" href="https://www.hrw.org/news/2021/10/14/french-ministers-denial-police-abuses-against-migrants-flies-face-facts">brutality</a> toward migrants, and positioning himself <a target="_blank" href="https://www.politico.eu/article/france-war-on-woke-laboratoire-de-la-republique/">against "wokism."</a>On June 9, a historic <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/european-union-parliament-election-far-right-nationalist-parties-2024-6">European Parliament election</a> took place, with Le Pen's far-right National Rally netting a record 31.4% of French votes, more than twice as many as Macron's centrist alliance. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/le-pens-party-trounces-macrons-eu-vote-exit-polls-2024-06-09/">Claiming the country needed "clarification,"</a> Macron called for a national parliamentary election on June 30 and July 7. Even <a target="_blank" href="https://www.lemonde.fr/en/politics/article/2024/06/17/how-macron-threw-his-supporters-into-a-panic-by-calling-snap-elections_6675018_5.html">his own allies</a> didn't understand.In the lead-up to the UK election on July 4, opinion polls <a target="_blank" href="https://www.politico.eu/article/uk-election-final-mega-polls-predict-total-tory-annihilation-labour-win/">predicted</a> a huge majority for the center-left Labour Party. In France, I feared the National Rally would capitalize on their European victory and take control of the Assembly. As an immigrant, I didn't want to be ruled by a party that routinely demonizes migrants.<h2 id="59a6f7d6-73eb-4e8f-b47a-503a385d4dc3">The elections have made me concerned about extremism and division in both countries</h2>In the end, Labour did secure a historic majority in the UK, but only with a tiny increase in vote share. Meanwhile, Reform UK, a party led by Brexit campaigner Nigel Farage that campaigned on "freezing" immigration, reneging on net zero climate goals, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.politico.eu/article/nigel-farage-manifesto-you-dont-have-to/">banning "transgender ideology"</a> in schools, netted more than 14% of the vote. This made them the third-largest party in terms of vote share. I was concerned that so many people were willing to vote for such a reactionary party.On top of this, one of Labour's first challenges in power was to deal with widespread <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/arrests-violence-riots-uk-far-right-wing-protests-immigration-2024-8">anti-immigration riots</a> targeting people of color. The protests that spread across the UK this summer were brought about by online disinformation about a stabbing where three young girls were killed.In France, the National Rally failed to get the majority many feared. A "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.lemonde.fr/en/politics/article/2024/07/07/french-elections-far-right-s-rise-blocked-by-republican-front_6676995_5.html">republican front</a>", consisting of other parties joining together to counter the far-right threat, worked better than expected, making the National Rally the third-largest group in terms of seats. But they still wound up with a much bigger voice in parliament than before and were by far the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.politico.eu/article/france-left-wing-marine-le-pen-far-right-national-rally-jordan-bardella-seats-new-popular-front/">largest party in terms of vote share</a>.I feel that France and the UK are dealing with many of the same problems: political polarization, the scapegoating of migrants, and an increasing focus on culture wars.<h2 id="c3bc22d1-7f74-40d0-a217-dc97700fc623">I'm worried history will repeat itself when the US elections come around</h2>This summer's events on both sides of the Channel have shown that as people grow disillusioned with the status quo, the extremes are becoming increasingly attractive.The National Rally continues to progress. I fear this year's vote has merely delayed their arrival in government, rather than preventing it. In the UK, this summer's far-right riots show that even when progressives win at the ballot box, the extremes are never far away.European eyes are now looking across the Atlantic.Donald Trump has been <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/04/27/magazine/trump-rallies-rhetoric.html">embracing conspiracy theories and referencing an "invasion" of migrants "conquering" the USA</a> in his 2024 campaign. His victory could have serious consequences for Americans, especially <a target="_blank" href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/interactive/2024/trump-harris-abortion/">women</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/saradorn/2024/05/10/trump-promises-rollback-on-trans-rights-heres-what-hes-said/?sh=51549ef4dae0">minorities</a>.In Europe, observers like me are worried about what his leadership would mean for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.politico.eu/article/donald-trump-signal-us-stop-ukraine-election-russia-volodymyr-zelenskyy-vladimir-putin/">foreign policy</a> in today's turbulent world. Trump's victory would galvanize European politicians like Le Pen and Farage and their supporters. Populist politics may not have won their national elections, but the most powerful nation in the world and its leader are behind them, normalizing their rhetoric.But if he loses, I'm still anxious about what will happen next, given the January 6 <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/five-things-we-learned-about-the-insurrection-in-2022-2023-1">capitol riots</a> in 2021.Kamala Harris has reenergized the presidential race and given hope to those who oppose Trump. But even if she wins, the deep divisions in American society won't go away — they haven't in the UK or France.

Voting in the UK and French elections taught me a concerning lesson that Americans should heed when heading to the polls

The complaint, filed with the National Labor Relations Board, suggests Trump's comments amount to intimidating workers."You're the greatest cutter," Trump said to Musk."I won't mention the name of the company, but they go on strike," he continued. <ul class="summary-list"><li>The <keyword id="20346186" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Secret-Service" source="keywords">Secret Service</keyword> is under scrutiny after a would-be assassin got in close range of <keyword id="19918985" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Donald-Trump" source="keywords">Donald Trump</keyword>.</li><li>After <keyword id="20347466" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ronald-Reagan" source="keywords">Ronald Reagan</keyword> was the target of an <keyword id="20039518" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="assassination-attempt" source="keywords">assassination attempt</keyword>, the agency faced a lesser reckoning.</li></ul>As a gunman fired shots at former President Donald Trump at a rally Saturday, nicking his right ear, US Secret Service agents instantly sprung into action. The agents surrounding Trump dove on top of him, covering his body to protect him from any more bullets. Another agent, his eye looking through the lens of a sniper rifle, shot the would-be assassin in the head, killing him. A major question remained: How did the Secret Service let a guy with a rifle <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ex-secret-service-agents-how-trump-assassin-could-fire-shots-2024-7">get so close to Trump</a> in the first place? The last time a president or presidential candidate was the subject of a similar <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reagan-secret-service-agent-says-trump-shooting-failure-for-agency-2024-7">assassination attempt</a> was Ronald Reagan. Back then, the Secret Service faced less of a reckoning. On March 30, 1981, John Hinckley Jr. got within a few feet of Reagan outside a Washington, DC, hotel where the president gave a speech to union representatives. Hinckley Jr. fired six times with his pistol. As Secret Service members shoved Reagan into his limousine, one bullet ricocheted off the side of the vehicle, went through the one-inch gap between the limo's body and open door, and penetrated Reagan's left side, breaking a rib and puncturing a lung, according to government records from the time. The Secret Service came under some scrutiny at that time, too. The US Senate and US House of Representatives <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://time.com/archive/6700383/protecting-the-president/">each held hearings</a>the following month to evaluate how well the agency did its job. But members of Congress mostly praised agents for their performance and mused on the nature of protecting politicians in open societies. Democratic Sen. Ted Kennedy <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.congress.gov/97/crecb/1981/11/12/GPO-CRECB-1981-pt21-1-2.pdf ">advocated for gun control legislation</a>. The Treasury Department, which housed the Secret Service at the time, prepared its own report. The 100-page document, completed in about five months, reviewed its own procedures and was full of praise for itself, writing that the agents protecting Reagan "reacted in precisely the manner required by their training and the applicable procedures," and recommending awards for the four agents who protected him. The report, prepared by Treasury Department General Counsel Peter J. Wallison, offered a few recommendations for the future, including better ways for the Secret Service to communicate with other federal agencies and having a paramedic travel with the presidential detail. "In many ways, that transfixing encounter with fate was an easy case: the gunman acted alone; on a weekday; with a low-caliber weapon; in Washington, D.C.; while the President was at the door of his limousine; within a mile or two of a fully equipped and staffed metropolitan hospital; above all, the President's wound was not mortal," the report read. "Anyone can imagine less favorable circumstances, and it is for these that Treasury and other agencies must be prepared." <h2>The Secret Service has been plagued by scandal</h2>Reagan was seriously injured in the <keyword id="19909929" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shooting" source="keywords">shooting</keyword>, as were a Secret Service agent and DC police officer on the scene. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gun-control-advocate-james-brady-dies-2014-8">James Brady</a>, his press secretary, suffered the worst injuries, with a bullet to the head that caused lifelong neurological issues. On Saturday, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/who-was-thomas-matthew-crooks-the-trump-rally-shooter-2024-7">Thomas Matthew Crooks</a> shot and killed <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/victim-trump-rally-shooting-corey-comperatore-shielded-family-from-gunfire-2024-7">Corey Comperatore</a>, an attendee of the Trump rally in Pennsylvania, and injured two other bystanders, even as he failed at his attempt to kill Trump himself. By 2024, the Secret Service's longstanding reputation as an elite force has been damaged by controversies in recent years. Members of the agency <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/secret-service-messages-deleted-three-weeks-after-jan-6-attack-2022-7">deleted text messages</a> from January 6, 2021, making them unavailable for a congressional panel investigating the pro-Trump insurrection attempt. Earlier this year, an agent was <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://nypost.com/2024/04/30/us-news/kamala-harris-secret-service-agent-had-screws-loose-ex-colleague/">removed from Vice President Kamala Harris's detail</a> after reportedly assaulting a superior officer. In 2022, two agents were placed on leave after <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/two-secret-service-agents-seoul-incident/">reportedly getting into a fight with a cab driver</a> in Seoul. A 2015 House panel report faulted the Secret Service for numerous security breaches, which more recent agency leaders have tried to clean up. <div type="image" title="donald trump after being shot" height="536" width="715" msid="111792212" hostid="261"></div>Already, congressional oversight is more intense after the Trump shooting than it was after the Reagan shooting. Six committees have demanded answers from the Secret Service, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.politico.com/newsletters/inside-congress/2024/07/15/trump-shooting-probes-sweep-capitol-hill-00168451">according to Politico</a>: the House Oversight Committee, House Judiciary Committee, House Homeland Security Committee, House Intelligence Committee, Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, and Senate Judiciary Committee. Members of each committee received briefings from law enforcement Monday or were scheduled to receive them Tuesday, Politico reported. Kimberly Cheatle, the director of the Secret Service, is scheduled to testify in front of the House Oversight Committee on July 22. Some members of Congress are considering whether to create an independent commission to examine the Trump shooting in the same mold as the Warren Commission that investigated the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/07/15/us/politics/house-inquiries-trump-assassination-attempt.html">according to The New York Times</a>. The Department of Homeland Security — which took over control of the Secret Service from the Treasury Department when it was created in 2003 — has already announced a beefed-up security detail for Trump. President Joe Biden also ordered a Secret Service detail for independent presidential candidate <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/donald-trump-robert-kennedy-jr-leaked-call-bullet-mosquito-2024-7">Robert F. Kennedy Jr.</a>, whose father was killed in a political assassination in 1968 and whose previous requests for Secret Service protection had been denied. <h2>The Reagan assassination attempt investigations focused on Hinckley</h2>The main difference in the government agency reactions in 1981 compared to now is that Reagan's would-be killer was still alive. Hinckley Jr. was arrested immediately. His motives were readily apparent: He wanted to impress actor Jodie Foster by killing a US president. At trial, a jury found him not guilty, agreeing with his insanity defense. Hinckley Jr. was placed in a mental health institution and ultimately released in 2016. The FBI is investigating the Trump shooting, and it isn't clear what actions they'll ultimately take. The motive of Crooks, a registered Republican and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-shooting-suspect-rejected-from-school-rifle-team-ex-classmate-2024-7">reported gun enthusiast</a>, is much less evident. Representatives for the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security did not respond to Business Insider's requests for comment on whether they'd publish reports about the Trump shooting. <div type="image" title="Police and Secret Service diving to protect then-president Ronald Reagan during the attempted assassination in 1981." height="1683" width="2500" msid="111792214" hostid="261"></div>The FBI investigation into Hinckley Jr. was overseen by then-Assistant Attorney General <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://timesmachine.nytimes.com/timesmachine/1981/04/05/080499.html?pageNumber=30">Rudy Giuliani</a>. That investigation focused on building the criminal case against Hinckley Jr. A <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://vault.fbi.gov/president-ronald-reagan-assassination-attempt">1,000-page report</a> — completed just two months after the Reagan shooting — featured interviews with eyewitnesses, medical records, forensic evidence, and a deep dive into Hinckley's past. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, members of Congress and the media focused on an earlier incident with Hinckley. He was arrested in Nashville the prior October on weapons charges, possessing guns and handcuffs, when then-President Jimmy Carter visited the city. Journalists immediately found records related to the arrest, which <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://timesmachine.nytimes.com/timesmachine/1981/03/31/064339.html?pageNumber=1">took up prominent space on the front page of The New York Times</a> a day after the shooting. But Hinckley <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.nytimes.com/1981/04/03/us/fbi-notice-on-hinckley-arrest-at-issue.html">hadn't been on the Secret Service's internal watchlist</a>, and members of Congress <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.congress.gov/bound-congressional-record/1981/04/01/127/house-section/article/5948-5975?q=%7B%22search%22%3A%22John+Hinckley+Jr.%22%7D&amp;s=6&amp;r=37">demanded to know</a> why the FBI didn't inform the Secret Service about the earlier arrest. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms played a role in the investigation, too, tracing the purchase of Hinckley's handgun to a pawnshop in Dallas. The Justice Department also <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.justice.gov/file/149506/dl?inline">prepared a memorandum on presidential succession</a> after then-Secretary of State Alexander Haig falsely claimed he was "in charge" at the White House until then-Vice President George HW Bush arrived (the Speaker of the House and President Pro Tempore of the Senate were in line before him). Congress later passed two significant laws following the shooting. After Hinckley's acquittal, Reagan signed a law in 1984 restricting the use of the insanity defense — shifting the burden from prosecution to the defense in criminal cases. In 1993, with support from Brady and his family, President Bill Clinton signed into law the Brady Act, which regulated handgun purchases, after versions of the law floated through Congress in the aftermath of the shooting. The Reagan shooting took place in a period of history when attempted and successful assassinations were not uncommon. John Lennon was killed just a few months earlier, and Pope John Paul II was shot a couple of months later. In the Treasury Department report, Wallison wrote that violence struck at the heart of democracy itself. "What is already clear is that a democratic system which values an orderly transfer of authority through free elections cannot allow the results of these processes to be redirected or reversed by violence," he wrote. Correction: July 24, 2024 — An earlier version of this story misstated how long it took for the Treasury Department to complete its report into the attempted assassination of Ronald Reagan in 1981. Jamaal Bowman was roundly defeated Tuesday in the Democratic primary for New York's 16th Congressional District, making him the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-squad-primary-challengers-dates-races-israel-progressives-2024-2">first member of the Squad</a> to lose reelection.His <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jamaal-bowman-george-latimer-israel-primary-2024-5">moderate opponent</a>, George Latimer, the Westchester County executive, will almost certainly be elected to Congress this fall after defeating Bowman by over 16 points.In the closing days of the race, progressives focused their ire on the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, a group whose super PAC spent millions to sway the race toward Latimer."We should be outraged when a super PAC of dark money can spend $20 million to brainwash people into believing something that isn't true," Bowman said at his election-night party Tuesday.But while AIPAC did play a big role in this race — as it has in several high-profile Democratic primaries in recent years — it would be a mistake to simply blame the pro-Israel group for Bowman's loss.The congressman was uniquely vulnerable to a primary challenge, and the group is continuing to lose influence within the Democratic Party.<h2 id="c5a24ef7-f38e-4308-8538-1b0cd85fd41d">AIPAC can make a big difference — but it can't straight up buy elections</h2>Ahead of the 2022 midterm elections, AIPAC — a lobbying group that advocates for essentially unconditional support for Israel — established a super PAC called United Democracy Project to increase its direct influence on elections.As progressives like to point out, much of the super PAC's funding has come from Republican billionaires, and it has primarily poured money into Democratic primaries to block progressives from gaining ground.Bowman emerged as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jamaal-bowman-george-latimer-israel-primary-2024-5">one of AIPAC's top targets</a> this year as a result of calling for a cease-fire in the days after Hamas' attacks on October 7 and describing Israel's actions in Gaza as a "genocide."AIPAC spent <a target="_blank" href="https://www.aipacticker.com/">over $17 million</a> on Bowman's primary, the most it's ever spent on one race and the most a single group has spent on a congressional race this cycle. That avalanche of money made this House primary the most expensive in American history.On the ground, AIPAC's offensive translated into TV ads attacking Bowman and praising Latimer, as well as a deluge of mailers to residents' doors. Those ads mostly focused on Bowman's vote against President Joe Biden's Bipartisan Infrastructure Law in 2021 rather than the congressman's criticism of Israel.Having the backing of AIPAC — or any super PAC, for that matter — can be a huge leg up to candidates.Last month, AIPAC played a major role in Oregon's 3rd Congressional District, where Maxine Dexter defeated Susheela Jayapal in the Democratic primary with the help of $2.3 million in AIPAC spending, apparently routed through 314 Action Fund and a PAC called Voters for a Responsive Government.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/harry-dunn-congress-campaign-interview-fundraising-trump-biden-january-6-2024-3">Harry Dunn</a>, a former Capitol Police officer from Maryland, may have been headed to Congress if AIPAC hadn't spent $4.2 million to boost state Sen. Sarah Elfreth, who raised just $1.4 million on her own before defeating Dunn in the Democratic primary in May. And that doesn't even consider the successes the group had in Democratic primaries in 2022.But sometimes AIPAC flops, too. The group spent $4.6 million to defeat state Sen. Dave Min in a California House primary in March after he expressed <a target="_blank" href="https://www.semafor.com/article/03/01/2024/a-california-house-race-is-aipacs-first-big-target-nobody-is-quite-sure-why">fairly moderate criticisms</a> of Israel. He ended up winning by over six points.More broadly, there's a reason just a few Squad members ended up being vulnerable to a primary challenge this year, despite widespread progressive fears in late 2023: It would be way too difficult to take them all out, especially given how the politics around Israel have shifted among Democrats over the course of recent months.For example, AIPAC <a target="_blank" href="https://theintercept.com/2023/09/21/aipac-cbc-progressive-black-democrats/">tried to recruit a primary challenger</a> to Rep. Summer Lee in Pennsylvania, only for the effort to apparently fizzle. Lee <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/summer-lee-wins-primary-pennsylvania-bhavini-patel-israel-money-2024-4">easily won her primary</a> in April after the group declined to spend any money on the race.<h2 id="5e61c4cf-6911-41e5-8720-cdca41b9701f">Bowman was a weak incumbent, had significant personal scandals, and said incendiary things about October 7</h2>In 2022, Bowman faced two primary challengers, each of whom raised a fairly paltry sum. AIPAC did not spend any money against him.He got just 54% of the vote, losing big in the more upscale portions of Westchester County.It's impossible to really say what effect Bowman's infamous September fire-alarm incident had on his race, but there's little doubt it was a high-salience event.He was <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/which-democrats-voted-censure-resolution-jamaal-bowman-fire-alarm-2023-12">censured by the House</a> over it, including by three of his Democratic colleagues. The most charitable explanation — the one that Bowman has put forward — is that he was genuinely confused when he did it, which doesn't paint a flattering picture of the congressman's temperament.The more sinister view — the one that Latimer capitalized on — is that as a former middle-school principal, Bowman knew exactly what he was doing and was seeking to disrupt a vote on a government-funding bill.The congressman's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.politico.com/live-updates/2024/03/26/congress/bowman-house-israel-october-7-sexual-assault-hamas-00148426">characterization of reports of rape</a> on October 7 as "propaganda" was probably the single worst thing he said. (He has since apologized.)That, combined with his embrace of the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement and some of his incendiary rhetoric about the Jewish state, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.huffpost.com/entry/jamaal-bowman-not-just-aipac-money_n_6677291fe4b0fdfa60647614">alienated many of Bowman's Jewish constituents</a>, who appeared to have turned out in record numbers.Additionally, the revelation that Bowman <a target="_blank" href="https://www.thedailybeast.com/ny-rep-jamaal-bowman-promoted-911-conspiracy-theories-on-blog">once embraced 9/11 conspiracy theories</a> created the impression that the congressman held radical views outside the mainstream of American politics.Months before AIPAC began dropping millions of dollars on the race, polling already showed <a target="_blank" href="https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/polls/house/2024/new-york/16/">Bowman struggling against Latimer.</a><h2 id="2984b17b-d485-485e-8056-fd7c0f29cd92">Despite his own flaws, Latimer was a well-positioned challenger</h2>In the closing weeks of the campaign, Latimer consistently made statements that — at best — were racially insensitive.He told Bowman <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/metzgov/status/1800336747404157042">during a virtual debate</a> that the congressman's "constituency is Dearborn, Michigan," even though Bowman had received fewer than $2,000 in itemized contributions from the majority-Arab city. Latimer later said that he wasn't referring to the "Islamic presence" in the city but to the fact that Bowman has a joint fundraising committee with Rep. Rashida Tlaib, whose Detroit-area district includes Dearborn. Yet <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jamaal-bowman-george-latimer-dearborn-debate-2024-6">all of the money that flowed through the committee</a> came from New York donors.He also accused Bowman of trying to "play the ethnic game" by highlighting those kinds of statements. And Jacobin reported that Latimer had <a target="_blank" href="https://jacobin.com/2024/06/george-latimer-bowman-segregation-westchester">slow-walked desegregation efforts</a> in Westchester County.Despite all that, Latimer was well positioned to take on Bowman. He's well known in the county, has strong relationships in parts of the district where Bowman has consistently underperformed, and is by all accounts a skilled retail politician.<div type="image" title="George Latimer at his victory party on Tuesday." height="1500" width="2000" msid="111292438" hostid="261"></div>Looking at each candidate's fundraising is also an instructive indicator of local support.As of June 5, 61% of Latimer's itemized contributions had come from New York, and over one third had come from within the district. By contrast, only about 30% of Bowman's itemized contributions came from in state, and less than 10% came from the district.<h2 id="ca443005-7327-4c8f-947e-b5d3dac075a7">There's a glimmer of hope for progressives</h2>Bowman's defeat is indeed a victory for AIPAC. And it may get another one later this summer when Rep. Josh Hawley</a> has sought to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vance-hawley-republicans-uaw-strikes-shawn-fain-labor-2023-9">position himself as populist Republican</a> and a staunch ally of organized labor.That's included rallying with striking auto workers in his home state of Missouri last September, courting support from labor unions, and even voting against a recent GOP-led effort to overturn a new rule from the National Labor Relations Board.Despite those moves, the United Auto Workers are endorsing Democrat Lucas Kunce over Hawley as the Missouri Republican seeks reelection this year."Josh Hawley calling himself pro-worker is a total joke. There is only one candidate in this US Senate race who has earned the trust of Missouri autoworkers, and that's Lucas Kunce," said Fred Jamison, President of the UAW Region 4 Midwest States Cap Council, in a statement first shared with Business Insider.A spokesperson for Hawley did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.Kunce, a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/missouri-populist-lucas-kunce-senate-jail-congressmembers-stock-insider-trading-2021-12">self-styled populist Democrat</a> who also ran for Senate in 2022, is likely to prevail in the August 6 primary. Observers generally consider the race to lean Republican, though organizers are hoping to put a constitutional amendment to protect abortion rights on the ballot this November — a move that could drive Democratic turnout."I'm honored to have the support of UAW in this race," Kunce said in a statement to Business Insider. "The only way we'll put Missouri and America first in the next generation of industry is by investing in and empowering workers like them. In the US Senate, I'll fight like hell for them. Let's pass the PRO Act and Make Shit In America Again!"Hawley has made some pro-worker moves in recent years, including voting to give seven extra days of paid sick leave to rail workers during a looming strike in December 2022 and supporting a $15 minimum wage for workers at companies that generate more than $1 billion in annual revenue.The Teamsters, one of the country's largest labor unions, contributed $5,000 to Hawley's reelection campaign in April. They also gave $45,000 to the Republican National Committee — along with the same amount to the Democratic National Committee — and have seemingly considered endorsing former President Donald Trump.But Hawley previously supported right-to-work laws, and he remains opposed to the Protecting the Right to Organize Act, a top priority of organized labor. The Democratic-backed bill is designed to strengthen workers' ability to form unions."I'm not a huge fan of the PRO Act," Hawley <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vance-hawley-republicans-uaw-strikes-shawn-fain-labor-2023-9">told Business Insider</a> in September. "My worry would be that it might, you know, hurt workers more than it helps."He went on to say that "we can have a debate about" the bill, but that the "real question" is whether certain jobs will remain in the US at all."If you want to talk about how to divide up a shrinking pie, I suppose we can do that," said Hawley. "But why don't we think about how we get more pie for labor in this country?"Hawley has also criticized public sector unions, which account for slightly less than half of all union members in the US and include teachers and police officers."I just think that public sector unions for a long time have held government hostage, held vital government services for people hostage, and that's different," Hawley <a target="_blank" href="https://www.kansascity.com/news/politics-government/article280706255.html">told the Kansas City Star</a> in October. "But when you're talking about private sector unions that are trying to get folks bargaining power, these multinational corporations, particularly in the last 30 years, they're really less and less tied to this country and less and less tied to American workers."
