<ul class="summary-list"><li><a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/what-not-to-do-when-getting-wrist-tattoo-according-to-artists-2023">Tattoo artists</a> weighed in on which designs will be more and less popular in 2024.</li><li>Floral designs and minimalistic styles continue to soar in popularity. </li></ul><p>Business Insider spoke with tattoo artists to learn which designs will be <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/pant-trends-whats-popular-and-going-out-next-year-2023#:~:text=Insider%20asked%20four%20professional%20stylists,falling%20out%20of%20the%20spotlight.">popular in 2024</a> and which are falling out of favor.</p><p>Here's what they said.</p><h2>Minimalistic styles continue to be popular</h2><p>Tattoo artist Lorena Lorenzo of <a target="_blank" href="https://indigoartattoos.com/"><u>Indigo ArTattoos</u></a> expects to continue seeing minimalistic designs.</p><p>"It's quite amusing because these tattoos can range from large-scale pieces to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/what-not-to-do-when-getting-small-tattoo-according-to-artists-2022">ones as small as</a> a toonie," she said, referring to the Canadian $2 coin. "It all depends on the ideas that the clients bring in."</p><h2>Floral designs are here to stay</h2><div type="image" title="black trans woman with several tattoos looking at her phone and smiling" height="604" width="806" msid="105681824" hostid="261" sizebytes="29548"></div><p>According to Jesse Smith, celebrity tattoo artist and owner of <a target="_blank" href="https://loosescrewtattoo.com/"><u>Loose Screw Tattoo</u></a>, floral designs have been and will continue to be a staple.</p><p>"Floral designs have been around since the beginning and seem to be gaining popularity with the more recent stipple style that has emerged," he told BI.</p><p>Stipple style refers to the use of tiny dots <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/tattoo-artist-what-not-to-do-when-getting-colorful-tattoo-2022-9">to shade tattoos</a>, giving a similar effect as pointillism in painting.</p><h2>People continue to opt for infinity signs</h2><p>Anastasia Gatsko, tattoo artist and owner of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.instagram.com/g_tattoo.piercing/"><u>G Tattoo &amp; Piercing</u></a>, said the infinity symbol won't be going anywhere — in fact, she called it "the most popular design of all time."</p><p>"I don't see anything bad in using the infinity sign, even though some artists refuse to use it because it's overdone," she told BI.</p><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/worst-tattoos-people-ask-for-from-artists-2022-6">Despite its frequent use</a>, the symbol can hold special meaning, which is why the artist thinks so many people still choose it.</p><h2>AI-generated tattoos may soar in popularity</h2><p>With the rising <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-image-generators-artists-copying-style-thousands-images-2022-10">buzz around artificial intelligence</a> and its many potential uses, Smith expects to see AI break into the tattoo world next year.</p><p>"Now that people can curate and design their own tattoos via an AI art app and a few prompts, I suspect this will become more common moving forward," he told BI.</p><h2>Realistic tattoos continue to be hot choices in both color and gray ink</h2><div type="image" title="someone tattooing colorful flowers on someone else's upper arm" height="1137" width="1515" msid="105681825" hostid="261" sizebytes="85100"></div><p>Brandon David, CEO and founder of <a target="_blank" href="http://www.tattoospace.com/"><u>Tattoo Space</u></a>, expects color and gray styles to continue to be popular for realistic designs.</p><p>"These styles have been popular for years and show no signs of slowing down," he said. "Their ability to capture lifelike images and scenes makes them a constant choice for many."</p><h2>On the other hand, people aren't requesting as many anime-inspired tattoos</h2><p>According to Smith, anime tattoos aren't as popular as they used to be, which might be a result of generational shifts.</p><p>"Although the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/best-anime-year-where-to-stream-chainsaw-man-spy-family-2022">fandom around them</a> is strong, the generation that is into them is getting older, and I suspect that will affect the number of people who are getting them," he told BI.</p><h2>Appropriating tribal designs isn't coming back in fashion</h2><div type="image" title="red x next to a tribal tattoo on someone's back" height="695" width="927" msid="105681827" hostid="261" sizebytes="59636"></div><p>Tribal tattoos are known for their bold and intricate designs, and in some cultures, they <a target="_blank" href="https://xtremeinks.com/blogs/artists-corner/understanding-the-cultural-significance-of-tribal-tattoo-designs">hold ceremonial significance</a>. But Lorenzo told BI that the style is falling out of favor for people outside of those cultures.</p><p>Instead, the tattoo artist said a new style called cyber sigilism — which is more veiny and futuristic — is gaining popularity.</p><h2>Ignorant designs aren't making the cut next year</h2><p>Ignorant tattoos are part of a controversial style that typically uses linework and cartoon-quality images to comment on society through satire.</p><p>But Gatsko told BI that many tattoo artists are no longer engaging in this trend.</p><p>"Ignorant design refers to using smudged and crooked lines to depict any topic in the world," she said. "While it can be used humorously, it is not commonly requested for sleeve designs."</p><p>She added that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/embarrassing-tattoo-questions-and-answers-from-artist-2021-10">most veteran artists</a> no longer offer the style, and now even newbies are turning away from it.</p><h2>Feathers and dandelions are overdone</h2><div type="image" title="red x next to a feather tattoo on someone's leg" height="1122" width="1496" msid="105681829" hostid="261" sizebytes="230376"></div><p>Feather and dandelion designs have been popular for many years. But David expects to see <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/tattoo-artist-shares-overdone-trends-designs-that-wont-get-boring-2022-8">less of these designs</a> next year.</p><p>"The imagery of feathers with birds flying off and dandelions turning into flying seeds is losing its charm," he said. "These designs, once symbols of freedom and transformation, are now seen as overdone."</p>

Tattoo artists share 5 designs that will be popular next year and 4 that are on their way out

<ul class="summary-list"><li>An auction of late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen's art collection raised just over $1.5 billion.</li><li> The Christie's auction has set a new record as the biggest art sale in history.</li></ul><p>An auction of 60 artworks from the collection of late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen smashed records by bringing in just over $1.5 billion, making it the biggest private-collection sale in history, per <a href="https://www.christies.com/about-us/press-archive/details?PressReleaseID=10729&amp;lid=1">Christie's</a>. </p><p>The most expensive work was Georges Seurat's "Les Poseuses, Ensemble (Petite version)", which fetched $149.2 million. This painting, which depicts three nude women, is considered a pioneering work of Seurat's signature style of Pointillism. </p><p>A total of five pieces went for more than $100 million each at the auction in New York on Wednesday night. </p><p>Paul Cézanne's colorful landscape "La Montagne Sainte-Victoire" sold for $137.8m, setting a record for the artist. And a Gustav Klimt 1903 painting, Birch Forest, also set a new benchmark by fetching $104.6m.</p><p>Alex Rotter of Christie's said Allen "changed the way we live our lives. Discussing his collection in a 2006 interview, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/see-microsoft-cofounder-paul-allen-1-billion-art-collection-auction-2022-9#the-pieces-in-the-visionary-collection-range-in-price-estimates-from-15-million-to-upwards-of-120-million-and-come-from-artists-like-vincent-van-gogh-georgia-okeeffe-claude-monet-georges-seurat-and-more-heres-a-closer-look-at-some-of-the-highlights-from-allens-collection-4">he said</a>: "You have to be doing it because you just love the works ... and you know that all these works are going to outlast you. You're only a temporary custodian of them." </p><p>The second part of Allen's collection, featuring 95 more artworks, goes under the hammer on Thursday. </p>

An auction of 60 works from the late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen's art collection smashes records by raising $1.5 billion

<ul class="summary-list"><li>71-year-old artist David Hollowell is converting a barn into a 3D optical illusion mural.</li><li>Adrienne Hollowell, his daughter, shares footage on TikTok — where millions have tuned in.</li></ul><p>Seventy-one-year-old David Hollowell looks thoughtfully at a 3D-looking painting of a 7-foot psychedelic Lorax-esque mushroom cap before he brushes on a dab of electric yellow paint. His 33-year-old daughter, Adrienne, who runs a TikTok account dedicated to his ambitious art project, records the moment.</p><p>David, an artist and former art professor of 31 years at the University of California-Davis, has been called "one of the most accomplished painters of his generation"<a href="https://www.harkawik.com/hollowell-light" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> by Hark Awik</a>, an NYC gallery that previously exhibited his work. But of late, he's been sticking closer to home. Since 2018, he's been turning the family's high-ceilinged barn into an immersive mural. </p><h2>David fell off a roof in 2021 and has been re-learning to speak since</h2><div type="image" title="David Hollowell TikTok side by side art and man" height="800" width="1200" msid="98994531" hostid="261"></div><p>In May 2021, David fell off a roof while installing solar panels and suffered a severe traumatic brain injury. In the years since, he's struggled with aphasia, which has impeded his ability to speak or write. (Aphasia, which occurs because of a brain injury, affects about 2 million people in the US, per the <a href="https://www.aphasia.org/aphasia-definitions/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">National Aphasia Association</a>). On TikTok, his daughter shares both his artwork and his personal journey with the language disorder with over <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@david.hollowell" target="_blank" rel="noopener">196,600 followers</a>.</p><p>Most often, Adrienne posts TikToks of the space — albeit "near impossible" to convey, as she told Insider with a laugh. Her phone camera pans slowly across the room's walls, trying to communicate both the scale and intricacy of monumental pointillism. </p><p>David's style, commonly compared to dutch artist M.C. Escher, is a series of visual hat tricks. The room, titled the "Enchanted Hanging Garden of Unearthly Delights" is dually inventive and mischievous. In one panel, a stony face sticks a tongue out so convincingly that Adrienne must constantly reiterate to followers that, yes, the entire work is in 2D. In another, a giant, floating furry orb purses human lips. David has covered the 20 x 24-foot room, and its 30-foot ceilings by spending five-to-six hours in there daily. More recently, his family has heard him practicing speech therapy as he paints.</p> <h2>For Adrienne, TikTok allows her to share her admiration and love for her father with millions — and his journey with aphasia</h2><div type="image" title="David Hollowell painting a flower" height="747" width="996" msid="98994533" hostid="261"></div><p>"I wanted the world to know my dad and how special this is for me and my family," she explained. "But I also had this craving to show the world what this man is capable of." </p><p>"Day 365 of trying to make my dad famous," she captioned a <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@david.hollowell/video/7176354714571820334" target="_blank" rel="noopener">December 12 video</a>. "A glimpse into my dad's mind," she captioned a <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@david.hollowell/video/7180803208871398702" target="_blank" rel="noopener">December 24 TikTok</a>. </p> <p>Occasionally, Adrienne also gives followers updates on his healing ("slow, but steady," she told Insider) and their daily speech therapy work. She's also asked viewers to share any new aphasia treatments they know of. Less frequently, she'll share a bit about their personal relationship — like an <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@david.hollowell/video/7132527413845789998?is_from_webapp=1&amp;sender_device=pc&amp;web_id=7120698119249577518" target="_blank" rel="noopener">open letter to her father about his recovery</a>.</p><p>"No one is working harder at this," David's wife of 46 years, Terry Hollowell, told Insider of his recovery. (Insider interviewed David, Terry, and Adrienne; Due to David's aphasia, his wife and daughter provided verbal commentary).</p> <h2> </h2><p>On TikTok, commenters leave admiring comments and words of encouragement. Former students have shared fond memories of learning from the artist. </p><p>For Adrienne, who's worked in marketing and graphic design, TikTok is an opportunity to share her overwhelming admiration and pride for her father's work with others. (She told Insider she loves reading the comparisons between her dad and other artistic heavyweights like Michelangelo). She also hopes to create more awareness of aphasia and <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@david.hollowell/video/7150328162738752814?is_copy_url=1&amp;is_from_webapp=v1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">has asked viewers to share any information on treatments</a>. </p><p>The injury has created complicated feelings in the Hollowells — including gratitude for life and sadness at its new challenges for David. </p><p>"People will say to me: 'Oh, but he's alive,' and yes, of course, I am joyous that my father didn't die from his accident. But, good lord, do I miss his words? I miss his stories. I miss his humor. I miss our little existential conversations in the morning — and it is devastating." </p> <p>"A lot of the comments on TikTok are like, 'I lost my dad last year. Don't forget to hug your dad every day.' And so I do not take that for granted anymore…maybe I did before the fall," Adrienne said.</p><p>For Adrienne, TikTok is a digital tribute to her father, and an opportunity to educate on aphasia or crowdsource new therapy leads. For David, it seems most relevant for the joy it can bring his daughter — as well as whatever they can learn from others with Aphasia. </p><p>"When I showed my dad that he had gone viral on TikTok," Adrienne said, "He just like, 'what's TikTok?'"</p><p>"He doesn't really care about a lot of social media," she added. "For me, it's just so fun and exciting."  </p><h2>For a personal project, external admiration can be nice — but it's not the point</h2><div type="image" title="David Hollowell on lift painting mural" height="1248" width="998" msid="98994535" hostid="261"></div><p>A viewer might be inclined to believe that David's art project has taken on a new or exalted meaning in the years since his accident severely curtailed his communication — but Terry insisted otherwise. </p> <p>"I don't think his art practice has changed one bit from before the fall," she told Insider. "His artistic view has not changed at all." </p><p>Adrienne may have told TikTok she's trying to make her dad famous, but it's obvious that admirers — or lack of — are irrelevant to David. Originally, he turned down requests from videographers who requested to film his mural — "He didn't want to be interrupted at work. It's his space, it's his thing; we're just getting to witness it," Adrienne explained. But his collaboration with his daughter on TikTok is different.</p><p>As of now, the account's most popular video has about <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@david.hollowell/video/7176354714571820334" target="_blank" rel="noopener">7.2 million views</a>. Hundreds of thousands of people have experienced David's work through his daughter's phone. But, the result of thousands of hours of work only has only one intended viewing spot.</p><p>"It's made to be viewed in one spot in the middle of the room by one person," Terry told Insider. "He made it for someone who's 6'2 — which is what he is." </p><p>"There's that old saying, 'publish or perish,'" she added, with a laugh. "He's not doing this for anybody but himself — he's not doing it for the university. I think that's an amazing freedom."</p>

An artist with aphasia spent thousands of hours creating an eye-popping 3D optical illusion mural &mdash; and his daughter is trying to make him TikTok-famous

He's an <keyword id="1150" type="POSITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Artist">artist</keyword> who takes these hard-to-recycle pieces and turns them into pixelated artworks. Just one of his artworks can consist of up to 40,000 keys. That's about 460 <keyword id="109745" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="keyboards">keyboards</keyword>. Each key is carefully dyed and placed in exactly the right spot, so that when you look from afar, all the tiny squares will come together to form a full picture. His technique is similar to pointillism, which was popular in the 1880s, but instead of paint and dots arranged to create a picture, the square keys mimic pixels. He calls this tech-pointillism. Erik has used this technique to recreate famous paintings, like Johannes Vermeer's "Girl with a Pearl Earring," Vincent <keyword id="89453" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Van-Gogh">van Gogh</keyword>'s "The Starry Night," and Leonardo da Vinci's "Mona Lisa."</p><p><strong>Erik Jensen:</strong> Basically, everybody in the whole world have used a keyboard before. They've written love letters, they write emails, they work on them, they learn from them. And so there's that connection. I was really interested in that process of taking something trashy or broken or old and to make it something beautiful and valuable.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> Using keys means that his pieces have to follow a strict grid pattern, like real pixels on a computer screen. And since each key is a specific and unchangeable size and shape, he has to figure out how to create curves without physically cutting off pieces of the square. That's the hardest part of his process. Imagine trying to make a circle using a bunch of squares. So how exactly does it happen? Erik has to blend the edges without causing the picture to become too blurry. For example, the eyes on "Girl with a Pearl Earring" are only a few pixels, so he has to carefully decide which colors to use to make the eye look realistic. This is why most of his pieces are on the larger side. It makes it easier to create fine details. The smaller the artwork, the more difficult it becomes to create detail. A piece using 900 keys may sound like a lot of material to work with, but in reality, it's only 30 by 30 pixels, which is very minimal space. Each piece starts with a keyboard, or more like 150 to 200 keyboards. That's how many he goes through in a month, and his collection totals over 8,000 keyboards.</p><p><strong>Erik:</strong> My whole van is full of keyboards!</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> When he receives a keyboard, one of the first things he does is pop off the keys. How? He takes a flathead screwdriver, wedges it underneath the keys, and yanks them off in a line. Then they're all thrown into a bath of soapy water for 24 hours. This gets rid of any stains, food, cat hair, and anything else that might get stuck in there from years of use. Many of the keyboards are ones that were rejected by <keyword id="114175" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="recycling">recycling</keyword> companies for being too difficult to recycle. To properly undergo the recycling process, a keyboard needs to be taken apart completely, separating the plastic, the metal, the cords, and the wires. For many recycling companies that receive hundreds of keyboards a day, this is simply too much work. To create the colored keys, Erik dyes them. This can only be done with keys that are lighter in color, like beige, white, and yellow. After many rounds of trial and error, he's created a secret dye recipe that won't smudge the characters. He also ensures that he gets different shades of the same color so that it can create depth and dimension.</p><p><strong>Erik:</strong> It's so much fun to see all these colors. And you'll notice, like, the gradations of all the different colors. It depends on how long the keys stay in the dye is how dark they get. If they stay in for a couple minutes, they get pretty dark. If they stay for a couple seconds, they're a lot lighter. See, like, this came from the same dye batch. It's really light, versus this one is really dark.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> Before starting a new painting, Erik uses a couple of different computer programs to pixelate the picture he's trying to recreate. The digital pixelation is not exact, but rather a guide to help him get the measurements right. Erik makes countless adjustments while creating the artwork. This can include continuously switching out lighter and darker shades to create shadows or add more clarity. Laying down the keys can be a long and tedious process, like putting together a jigsaw puzzle that's been broken into thousands of pieces. But there's an upside to using them. It's able to give Erik's work a 3D effect and can be used to create depth. That's because the keyboards he uses comes from different companies and were made in different years. The older the key, the taller it is. Erik's every move has to be exact because every key is glued on one by one. And once it's attached, there's no going back. Through the process, he's learned to appreciate tiny imperfections, like crooked pieces or the smudged ink on the letters. That's because when he steps back to take a look, every flaw disappears and he's reached the goal of creating the bigger picture. And that's not all there is to his pieces. When you take a good look, you can also see that he's hidden quotes in his paintings using the letters printed on the keys. "I dream of painting and then I paint my dream." Vincent van Gogh. This artist recycles old computer keys into famous paintings

<p>The legally blind grandfather was drawn to <keyword id="6387283" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="computers">computers</keyword> as an artistic medium because the 18-year-old software enabled him to zoom in on his artwork, allowing him to better see.</p>
<p>Lasko's art is described as "a collision of pointillism and 8-bit," <a href="http://www.thisiscolossal.com/2013/07/the-pixel-painter-a-97-year-old-man-who-paints-using-microsoft-paint-from-windows-95/">ThisIsColossal reports</a>. </p>
<p>And instead of trying to eliminate the visible pixels from his artwork, Lasko revels in them.</p>
<p>Lasko first worked creating weather maps and other guides for military bombing runs during World War II before pursuing a career as a typographer. Now happy to no longer have to please "the client," Lasko spends his time thinking up new ideas to bring to life with MS Paint.</p>
<p>Once finished with a piece, Lasko visits a local Kinko's to see his work transformed from the screen to print.</p>
