In a fallout of the rise in prices of natural gas due to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, Green Gas Limited (a joint venture of GAIL and Indian Oil Corporation) has reduced the supply in Lucknow by 20 per cent. According to official sources, GGL supplies 1.45 lakh kg of <keyword id="6356175" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cng" source="Orion">CNG</keyword> and <keyword id="6355757" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="png" source="Orion">PNG</keyword> in Lucknow on regular days, but due to the surge in international prices, the supply has been decreased by up to 15,000-20,000 kg per day. "The reduction in supply of CNG and PNG will have a direct impact on nearly 4,000 CNG-run vehicles and 60 industrial units set up within the city limits. We have asked the industrial units to make necessary arrangements and switch their operations to commercial LPG or diesel, as there is no clarity on the restoration of supply by GAIL," an official said. He added that if the price of natural gas continued to rise, the rates of piped gas services for domestic usage would also go up. Currently, the charges for piped gas service for domestic use is Rs 38.5 per SCM (standard cubic metre) up to 45 SCM and Rs 46.33 per SCM above 45 SCM. A senior official in GAIL said, "India imports a major chunk of its natural gas from Qatar. Some part of the demand is met from the wells in Rajasthan and other states. Due to the Russia-Ukraine crisis, there is a shortage of gas supply in Europe and international companies are finding it difficult to meet the demand." "We do not know when the prices will drop again. The Indian supply chain has taken a hit due to the ripple effect of price hike in the international market," he added. CNG-PNG supply hit in Lucknow as prices of natural gas rise due to Russia-Ukraine conflict

ONGC returns to ₹2 trillion club after 2 years as gas, crude oil prices rise

<keyword id="6358777" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="New-Delhi">New Delhi</keyword>, The Centre's new directive for industrial units in Delhi to switch over to PNG (piped natural gas) owing to the high levels of pollution is a positive development for <keyword id="747943" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="city-gas-distribution">city gas distribution</keyword> (CGD) companies, ICRA said in a note. Accordingly, the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change on December 22, identified about 1,644 industrial units spread across 50 industrial areas in Delhi to switch over to PNG owing to the high levels of pollution. In addition, <keyword id="111875" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi-Pollution-Control-Committee">Delhi Pollution Control Committee</keyword> (DPCC) was also directed to inspect and identify the industries using unapproved fuels and to take stringent penal action in case of non-compliance. Besides DPCC, <keyword id="98830" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indraprastha-Gas">Indraprastha Gas</keyword> and Delhi government were also asked to work in close coordination with the industrial units so as to target the completion of infrastructure work and switch over to PNG by January 31, 2021. As per the ICRA note, this directive to compulsorily switch to PNG in the NCR region is a positive development for CGD companies, both from an immediate as well long-term perspective. "The directive by the ministry would provide a boost to the industrial volumes of incumbent IGL," said Prashant Vasisht, Vice-President and Co-Head, Corporate Ratings, ICRA. "This would also necessitate an accelerated expansion of network in the industrial clusters. Additionally, with several cities in northern India featuring among the top 20 most polluted cities globally, such as Jodhpur, Jind, Gurugram, Agra, Ghaziabad, Lucknow and Varanasi, other state pollution control boards may follow suit which would benefit the incumbent CGD entities in these cities." "Accordingly the move by the ministry accelerates the trend of switch to cleaner industrial fuels which began with the ban on use of pet-coke and furnace oil in October 2017 and is only expected to gather pace going forward considering the persistent high levels of pollution across northern India." However, the <keyword id="10498751" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="current-high-spot-gas-prices">current high spot gas prices</keyword> may lead to some resistance from the industrial consumers relying on cheaper alternate fuels, the note said. The Asian spot prices of LNG had declined below $2 per mmbtu in May 2020, owing to demand destruction due to outbreak of coronavirus amid increasing global supplies. In recent weeks, spot LNG prices have increased to nearly $10-11 per mmbtu due to increase in oil prices, supply issues in Australia and Malaysia, a colder than expected winter and delays in the Panama Canal. Nevertheless, ICRA expected the supply overhang amid demand inflicted by Covid-19 to keep prices muted over the longer term. Mandatory switch to Pipe Natural Gas for Delhi industries credit positive for city gas distribution companies, says ICRA

New Delhi, Feb 23 () Natural gas prices in India are likely to be cut by a steep 25 per cent beginning April, in line with the slump in global rates, sources said. The price of most of the natural gas produced by state-owned ONGC and Oil India Ltd, which account for the bulk of India's existing gas output, is likely to be cut to around USD 2.5 per million British thermal unit for the six-month period beginning April 1, from USD 3.23 as of now. This will be the second reduction in six months and will reduce rates to the lowest in two-and-half-years. Sources said the price of gas produced from difficult fields too is likely to be cut to USD 5.50 from USD 8.43 per mmBtu now. Prices of natural gas, which is used to produce fertiliser and generate electricity and is also converted into CNG for use in automobiles as fuel and cooking gas for households, are set every six months -- on April 1 and October 1 each year. The rates, besides dictating the price of urea, electricity and CNG, also decide the revenue of gas producers such as Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC). Natural gas price was last cut by 12.5 per cent on October 1. Rates were cut to USD 3.23 per mmBtu from earlier USD 3.69. For difficult fields, the rates were cut from an all-time high of USD 9.32 per mmBtu to USD 8.43. Sources said the reduction would impact revenues of India's biggest producer ONGC as well as Reliance Industries and its partner BP plc which plan to start gas production from their 'second-wave' of discoveries in eastern offshore KG-D6 block from mid-2020. The cut in price will lower the earnings of producers like ONGC but will also lead to a reduction in the price of CNG, which uses natural gas as input. It would also lead to lower cost of natural gas piped to households (PNG) for cooking purposes as well as of feedstock cost for the manufacturing of fertilisers and petrochemicals. ONGC's revenue and earnings from the gas business will fall by around Rs 3,000 crore because of the price cut, sources said. Gas prices in India are determined by taking a volume-weighted annual average of the prices prevailing in Henry Hub (US), National Balancing Point (UK), Alberta (Canada) and Russia with a lag of one-quarter. ONGC is India's largest integrated oil and gas company, accounting for 75 per cent of crude oil and natural gas production by volume, and 17 per cent of domestic refining capacity. Natural gas is a key raw material for the manufacturing of urea and comprises nearly 70 per cent of the total cost of urea production. For the fertiliser sector, nearly 42 per cent of the gas requirement is met through domestic gas, while the remaining is met through regasified liquefied natural gas (R-LNG) imports. The cost of production of urea changes by around Rs 1,600-1,800 per tonne for every USD 1 per mmBtu change. Natural gas prices in India likely to be cut by steep 25 pc from April

As the world experiences a major drop in oil prices, India decided to go for a 18% cut in the price to be paid to producers of natural gas to $2.5 per million British thermal unit (mbtu). 
 "The price of domestic natural gas for the period October 1, 2016 to March 31, 2017 is $2.50 per mbtu on Gross Calorific Value (GCV) basis," said a notification issued by the government's <keyword id="503200" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Petroleum-Planning-Analysis-Cell">Petroleum Planning &amp; Analysis Cell</keyword> (<keyword id="821764" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="PPAC">PPAC</keyword>). 
 
The rate valid till Friday is $3.06 per mbtu. 
 
This is the fourth reduction in 18 months as per the new gas pricing formula approved in October 2014. Gas prices are to be revised every six months and the next change is due on April 1. 
 
The petroleum ministry also announced a sharp reduction in cap price based on alternate fuels for undeveloped gas finds in difficult zones like deep-sea, high-temperature, high-pressure areas which are unviable to develop as per the existing pricing formula. 
 
The cap for October 1, 2016 to March 31, 2017, for gas from difficult areas will be $5.3 per mbtu, down from $6.61 in the preceding six-month period ending on Friday, the PPAC notification said. 
 Under the new pricing formula, rates are calculated by using prevailing price in gas surplus nations like the US, <keyword id="6358826" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Russia">Russia</keyword> and <keyword id="6356687" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="canada">Canada</keyword>. Indian gas prices are calculated by taking weighted average price at <keyword id="265673" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Henry-Hub">Henry Hub</keyword> of the US, National Balancing Point of the UK, rates in <keyword id="165372" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Alberta">Alberta</keyword> (Canada) and Russia with a lag of one quarter. 
 
It is being estimated that the price cut should result in a reduction of 50 paise to Rs 1.50 per standard cubic metre in the price of piped natural gas (PNG) for domestic consumers and an 80 paise to Rs 1.5 per kg cut in CNG prices.

​ Good news: Price of cooking gas to come down

NEW DELHI: CNG and piped natural gas prices are set to go up shortly, though not as much as feared. Indications emerging from hectic discussions between the oil ministry and <keyword id="71" type="POSITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Prime-Minister">Prime Minister</keyword>’s Office over the weekend suggest that gas price may be jacked up from $4.2 a unit to $5.5-6.8 per unit. 
 This increase will be almost $2 less than the $8.4 per unit price that was expected on the basis of formula adopted by the <keyword id="26374" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="UPA-government">UPA government</keyword>. But still, the hike will impact daily cost of living, particularly in a city such Delhi where CNG is used for public transport and PNG is increasingly becoming the choice for cooking. 
 
Higher gas price will also have marginal impact on overall cost of power by pushing up electricity tariff for gas-fired plants, which account for roughly 8% of the installed capacity in the country.

Assuming the government finally settles for a price of $6.8, CNG price in Delhi would go up by approximately Rs 7.50 per kg. Hypothetically even after a new gas price is announced, CNG would still be cheaper than what it cost in February. CNG price was reduced by Rs 14.90 per kg and PNG by Rs 5 per unit in February after the Centre said the entire gas demand would be met with cheaper domestic gas. 
 
Subsequently, CNG price in Delhi was raised by Rs 2.95 per kg in May due to falling rupee and rise in operational costs. So, even after this hike, the current price is Rs 11.95 cheaper than February level. Thus the fuel would be still cost Rs 4.45 less than in February. 
 
The discussions within the government are focused on simplifying the pricing formula to avoid doubling of present gas price. In all likelihood, the new formula would have among the benchmarks, markets with friendlier gas price. Thus Russia is expected to replace Japan, a country that imports gas in ships at very high prices. 
 
The new formula is also expected to specify pricing method based on net calorific value (NCV), which works out 10% cheaper than gross calorific value (GCV). NCV is calculated on reduced volumes upon deducting impurities such as water or other gaseous content present in natural gas.

There is also a possibility that the government could opt for a differential pricing by applying the latest pricing only to fields that are currently in production. Others that come on stream in near future, such as state-run ONGC’s marginal fields, would be allowed to sell at market price through tender system. 
 
Such a move is seen serving two purposes: One, it will mark a gradual shift towards market-determined pricing shift-- the original aim of oil sector reforms. Two, in a single stroke it would brighten investment climate by removing clouds over viability of new discoveries – mostly in deep and frontier waters. 
 
Another option on the table also envisages asking ONGC, the biggest beneficiary of any price revision, to part some of the money to share increased fuel subsidy. Taking off on this, there are also suggestions that the government could deregulate diesel price while simultaneously reducing Central levy on the fuel in the Budget to soften the blow on consumers. ONGC then can be asked to share the increased burden on fertilisers. 
 Prime minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> has held two rounds of brainstorming sessions, mainly focused on the issue, with <keyword id="60115" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Oil-minister">oil minister</keyword> Dharmendra Pradhan and <keyword id="46538" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Petroleum-Secretary">petroleum secretary</keyword> Saurabh Chandra. After a five-hour session on Friday evening, the PM held another round of discussion on Sunday that was also attended by finance minister <keyword id="42575" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Arun-Jaitley">Arun Jaitley</keyword>. 
 
 The framing of policy on gas pricing became a hot potato after a political storm arose during elections over allegations of crony-capitalism, public interest litigation in the Supreme Court as well as arbitration notices served against the government by <keyword id="6355199" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Reliance-Industries">Reliance Industries</keyword> Ltd and BP Plc.

By Shailesh Yadav The Gas Authority of India Ltd (<keyword id="6358765" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gail" source="Orion">GAIL</keyword>) on Thursday posted a 77.4 per cent slump year-on-year in standalone net profit for the fourth quarter due to the Ukraine-Russia War. The standalone net profit plunged 77.5 per cent year-on-year to Rs 603 crore in the fourth quarter (Q4) against the net profit of Rs 2,683 crore in the year-ago period. Talking to ANI, Sandeep Kumar Gupta, Chairman and Managing Director, GAIL, said that gas prices became very high due to the <keyword id="13010576" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="russia-ukraine-war" source="Orion">Russia-Ukraine war</keyword> which impacted the company's profit, despite its highest-ever annual revenue of Rs 1,44,302 crore, which was up 57 per cent, for FY23. Gupta said, "The petrochemical segment was affected, gas prices were not viable and because of it, we had to keep our plant shut and also keep it running at lower levels for a substantial period of the year because we were to service our customers which were tied up at long-term prices." He added, "However, we had to procure high-priced gas to supply to our customers and in transmission because some APM (administered price mechanism) allocation, which was there was taken away, so we had to consume the high-priced natural gas for our internal consumption, too." Now with the cooling of prices now, he said he hoped that all these adverse factors will not be there in the next fiscal and the company should come back to very robust numbers in the ongoing fiscal year. Talking about the current status of the supply-demand ration, the GAIL CMD said, "There was a supply disruption starting from May 22 after the Ukraine-Russia war last year and while this was a portfolio contract and the supplier should have supplied by cargo sourcing from other geographies if it was not possible from a particular territory, but then they did not supply." He also expressed hope, "However, it's good news that now the supplies have resumed from March this year." He said for the last two months, the company was getting the full allocation as per the contract, and hopefully that it would continue. "So, this is a big sort of reassurance on the supply front. And definitely, there is no cut as far as our downstream customers are concerned nowadays," the GAIL CMD said. Talking along the lines of Kirit Parikh Committee recommendation, the CMD said, "This is a very significant positive development that the government accepted the recommendation. This will definitely help." In fact, he said, "We have seen that with the implementation of this recommendation from the first of this year, there was a big drop in CNG (compressed natural gas) and PNG (piped natural gas) and definitely with such softening of prices, the consumption which was not happening in the last year especially will now come to normal levels." He said this would add more new customers, too. "So, definitely this will be a biggest step in taking natural gas to higher levels of consumption," he added. Gupta said, "We are having gas supplies from Qatar, the United States, and Russia from Australia. So, we have a very diverse portfolio of supplies. We are now scouting for new volumes and wherever those new volumes are there. We are talking to all such companies or countries. The new volumes are coming from primarily the Middle East and North America. These are the geographies where the discussions are going on." Talking about the hydrogen plant, Gupta said, "Our first green hydrogen electrolyzer is coming up at Vijaipur, Madhya Pradesh, this will be a capacity of 4.3 tonnes per day and this will be commissioned this year itself." Generate games</h2>With creativity and careful attention to prompts, ChatGPT users can get Code Interpreter to build a game from scratch. Convert files</h2>ChatGPT's new feature can transform images into GIFs and GIFs into videos. But Code Interpreter can also handle much more mundane file conversions efficiently.Howfinity, a YouTube channel dedicated to producing "how-to" videos on tech applications, showed <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3t7417CB-o8">in a recent video</a> that users can get Code Interpreter to convert files, such as turning a PNG file into a JPEG, or a MP4 file into a GIF.<h2>7. Mumbai, Jan 13 () The gem and jewellery industry has sought reduction in customs duty on gold to four per cent, withdrawal of tax collected at source (TCS), cut in <keyword id="6357502" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Import-Duty">import duty</keyword> on polished precious and semi-precious gemstones, in the upcoming Union <keyword id="6358021" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="budget">Budget</keyword> 2021-22. All India Gem and Jewellery Domestic Council (GJC) Chairman Ashish Pethe told , "We urge the government to reduce the customs duty to 4 per cent from the current 12.5 per cent. If the tax rate is not kept at this level, it will encourage smuggling and encourage people to do unorganised business." He further urged the government to keep goods falling under HSN-71 (Harmonised System Nomenclature) out of the purview of TCS provisions as the amount of funds blocked in TCS is 6.67 times more than the ability to pay income tax, resulting in blockage of funds. Pethe also said the facility of equated-montly instalment (EMI) should be extended to the gems and jewellery industry and to increase the cash purchase limit to Rs 1 lakh from the current Rs 10,000. Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (<keyword id="110243" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="GJEPC">GJEPC</keyword>) Chairman Colin Shah urged the government to reduce import duty on cut and polished precious and semi-precious gemstones to 2.5 per cent, from the current 7.5 per cent. In its Budget recommendations, GJEPC has also proposed a hike in import duty on synthetic cut and polished stones to 25 per cent from 5 per cent. Shah said GJEPC has also proposed amendment in taxation provisions to allow sale of rough diamonds in special notified zone in Mumbai. Malabar Group Chairman MP Ahammed has urged the government that tax rate, including import duty on gold and GST, should be reduced to 7 per cent. Ahammed has also said the government should create an enabling environment for the jewellery retail trade to introduce MRP pricing in jewellery without any pricing break-up in terms of GST or other taxes. Currently, gold attracts 12.5 per cent import duty and 3 per cent GST and total duty and GST implication works out at 15.5 per cent. "Such high taxes have led to large-scale smuggling and tax evasion. Therefore, reducing import duty-GST implication to 7 per cent is an effective measure to prevent those industry malpractices," he added. Although the tax and duty implication is 15.5 per cent on gold, the actual implication comes to around 20 per cent after adding the mining royalties. The gold and diamond trade together accounts for 7.5 per cent of the country's GDP and 14 per cent of the country's total exports. About 60 lakh people are employed in this sector. Therefore, Ahammed noted that the government should take steps to facilitate comprehensive development of the grade trade sector so that it can continue to play a pivotal role in the growth of the economy. PNG Jewellers Chairman and Managing Director Saurabh Gadgil opined that 2020-21 has had a negative impact on the industry over all. "While jewellers are on track to recover from the impact of the pandemic and a muted wedding season, we are hopeful that the Budget 2021-22 will look at the jewellery industry favourably and roll out many SOPs and important policy changes that can help revive the industry in the next one year," he said. It is critical that the government also look at policies that encourage banks to kick-start lending once again to the jewellery sector, which will help businesses across the board to maintain liquidity and ensure survival and success, he pointed out. From the consumer perspective, he said gold should be deemed as an asset class like the mutual funds, allowing an increase in consumer investment confidence as well as the availability of facilities like EMI schemes to invest in gold products. "Setting up of a spot exchange, announced in the 2018 Budget on an immediate basis, will ensure consistency in pricing of gold across the country. Mumbai, Apr 26 () The jewellery industry, which has come to a standstill due to the lockdown following the COVID-19 pandemic, is expecting complete sales washout on the day of Akshaya Tritiya on Sunday as compared to last year, even as many retailers are doling out innovative offers to attract customers. "This year Akshaya Tritiya has fallen within the lockdown 2.0, which will result in complete shutdown of jewellery shops. Whatever sales will take place will be on the digital platform only," All India Gems and Jewellery Domestic Council Chairman Anantha Padmanabhan told here. "We are expecting 97-98 per cent decline in business this year on the day of the festival compared to last year," he added. He said jewellers have come out with innovative offers to attract customers for digital purchases, including locking of prices, gold ownership certificates, among others. "Any physical delivery or purchase will happen after the lockdown. We expect the industry will gradually limp back to normalcy with May and June being extremely slow. We expect the demand to peak during Diwali," he added. Akshaya Tritiya, also known as Akha Teej, is an annual spring time festival considered auspicious in many regions (especially in the south and the west) for beginning new ventures, marriages, expensive investments such as in gold. PNG Jewellers Chairman and Managing Director Saurabh Gadgil said that for the first time ever, gold buying on Akshaya Tritiya will be completely online. "The turnout will not be like last year and jewellers are doing business by offering e-vouchers, e-certificates as physical buying and delivery at present is not possible due to the lockdown," he said. Jewellers are also offering a price-lock as gold is ruling at around Rs 48,000 per 10 grams, and will go up further as stocks will dwindle due to absence of imports on account of lockdown. Kalyan Jewellers Chairman and Managing Director T S Kalyanaraman said this year's sales cannot be compared to regular sales during Akshaya Tritiya. Unlike in the past years, Kalyan Jewellers does not have a full-fledged Akshaya Tritiya campaign this year, he said. "Over the past 25 odd years, Akshaya Tritiya has always been about buying gold at the showroom. However, this year, owing to a change in status quo with the lockdown, we have launched the 'Gold Ownership Certificate' to keep the annual gold purchase tradition going," he added. However, considering the limited time since the announcement of Kalyan Jeweller's Akshaya Tritiya offering and given the current circumstances, the company is expecting to clock about 10 per cent of its usual Akshaya Tritiya sales this year, he said. Hope floats that this would close the price gap between unorganised players in Morbi and branded tile makers like Kajaria Ceramics, Somany Ceramics, Cera Sanitaryware, and Asian Granito and help these companies gain market share. According to media reports, of the 800 ceramic units in total, over 400 wall tile plants running majorly on coal gasifiers have been closed so far owing to shortage of raw material that has been impacting the operation costs for these units. The Morbi ceramic industry had expected a huge growth. In fact, the industry is reportedly planning to establish 50 new wall tiles manufacturing plants. After the ban on March 6, the production has reportedly <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/ahmedabad/after-ngt-crackdown-450-ceramic-units-prepare-to-switch-to-gas/articleshow/68365929.cms">dropped</a> by 60%-70%. "Among these units, those most affected will be the wall tile and soluble salt tile manufacturers as they were meeting nearly their entire thermal energy requirements through coal gasifiers," Suprio Banerjee, vice president and head, Mid-Corporate ratings of ICRA reportedly said. India being the third largest ceramic producer in the world has been eyeing the global market. Given the fact that nearly <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/ceramic-industry-to-double-turnover-by-2021-thanks-to-real-estate-affordable-housing/articleshow/68217546.cms">70% of total output</a> in the ceramic industry comes from Gujarat alone, the new regulations may also affect the large ceramic players.
