New Delhi, <keyword id="9164750" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Manufacturing-activities" source="Orion">Manufacturing activities</keyword> in India touched a three-month high in March boosted by faster expansions in new orders and output amid demand resilience and easing of cost pressures, according to a monthly survey. The seasonally adjusted S&amp;P Global India Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) rose from 55.3 in February to 56.4 in March, signalling the strongest improvement in operating conditions in 2023 so far. The <keyword id="17021004" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="March-PMI-data" source="Orion">March PMI data</keyword> pointed to an improvement in overall operating conditions for the 21st straight month. In PMI parlance, a print above 50 means expansion while a score below 50 indicates contraction. "Underlying demand for Indian goods remained strong in March, underscored by the quickest upturn in factory orders for three months. Hence, production continued to expand at a robust clip and firms stepped up their stock building efforts," said Pollyanna De Lima, Economics Associate Director at S&amp;P Global Market Intelligence. According to the survey, input cost inflation retreated to its second-lowest mark in two-and-a-half years in March as pressure on supply chains subsided and the availability of raw materials improved. Subsequently, goods producers concentrated on rebuilding their stocks. Robust increases in buying levels in recent months supported a near-record accumulation of input inventories in March. On the prices front, close to 96 per cent firms signalled no change in cost burdens since February. "Although selling prices increased further at the end of the last fiscal quarter, the rate of inflation was moderate and broadly similar to February. Several panellists reportedly left their fees unchanged amid efforts to boost sales," Lima said. On the jobs front, goods producers kept payroll numbers broadly unchanged in March, as outstanding business volumes rose at a marginal rate that was the weakest in a year. "Companies reported abundant capacity among themselves and their suppliers. Pending workloads expanded only marginally in March, hindering job creation," Lima said. Going ahead, Indian manufacturers expect improved customer relations, new product releases and advertising to support sales and subsequently production over the course of the coming 12 months. "Although manufacturers were upbeat towards future new orders, they somewhat doubted that inflation would continue to recede. Such worries restricted optimism towards output prospects," Lima said. The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Reserve Bank will be meeting for three days on April 3, 5 and 6 and on Thursday will come out with the first bi-monthly monetary policy for fiscal 2023-24. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has already increased the repo rate by a total of 250 basis points since May in a bid to contain inflation though it has continued to remain above the central bank's comfort zone of 6 per cent for most of the time. The Consumer Price Index (CPI)-based inflation was 6.52 per cent in January and 6.44 per cent in February.

The final HSBC China Manufacturing PMI rose to a seven-month high in October, with the stronger momentum of manufacturing growth translating into the first expansion of employment sinc5e0March. This in turn should support private consumption growth in the coming months. China is on track for a gradual growth recovery.
Earlier today, we learned that the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/nbs-china-manufacturing-pmi-october-2013-2013-10">official PMI number</a> beat expectations, jumping to 51.4.

CHINA'S HSBC PMI HITS 7-MONTH HIGH

The headline number climbed to 51.9, a 24-month high.
Economists surveyed by Bloomberg were looking for a reading of 51.7, which is a tad higher than last month's reading of 51.5.
Any reading above 50 signals growth.

“At 51.9, January’s HSBC China manufacturing <keyword id="104215" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="PMI">PMI</keyword> rose for the fifth consecutive month to the highest level in two-years, heralding a good start to the New Year. Thanks to the continuous gains in new business, manufacturers accelerated production by additional hiring and more purchases. Despite the still tepid external demand, the domestic-driven restocking process is likely to add steam to China's ongoing recovery in the coming months.”

CHINA'S FLASH PMI RISES TO 24-MONTH HIGH

Over the last three days, countries around the world have been publishing their <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/april-2013-global-pmi-2013-5">manufacturing purchasing managers index (PMI) reports</a>.
And the message around the world is clear: manufacturing activity decelerated sharply in April.
The U.S. and China are growing marginally, but both decelerated. Europe continues to be in sharp contraction. And even Germany saw its manufacturing sector begin to contract in April.
According to JP Morgan, the global manufacturing <keyword id="104215" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="PMI">PMI</keyword> fell to 50.5 in April, down from 51.1 in March.
A reading above 50 signals expansion.
"The rate of expansion decelerated slightly during April, meaning that growth so far in 2013 has remained, at best, only marginal," they wrote. "This is still an improvement compared to the contractions signalled throughout much of the second half of last year."
"April saw manufacturing production increase at the slowest rate in the year-to-date, as growth of new order inflows also slipped to a near-stagnant pace. New export orders posted a marginal gain for the second month running in April."

JPMORGAN: Global Manufacturing Growth Has Stagnated

New Delhi, The services sector growth in <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword> rose to a six-month high in January as new business expanded at a faster pace amid buoyant demand from domestic and external clients, a monthly survey said on Monday. The seasonally adjusted <keyword id="20073680" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hsbc-india-services" source="keywords">HSBC India Services</keyword> <keyword id="19905748" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pmi" source="keywords">PMI</keyword> Business Activity Index rose to 61.8 in January, up from 59 in December, pointing to the sharpest rate of expansion in six months. In Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) parlance, a print above 50 means expansion while a score below 50 denotes contraction. The survey is compiled from responses to questionnaires sent to a panel of around 400 service sector companies. "India's services PMI rose to a six-month high in January. New business expanded at a faster pace and managers' expectation for future activity was strong. The new export business index accelerated, signalling that India's services exports remained robust," <keyword id="20412326" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ines-lam" source="keywords">Ines Lam</keyword>, Economist at HSBC, said. New export sales rose at the fastest pace in three months. Monitored firms signalled gains from clients across the globe, including Afghanistan, Australia, Brazil, China, Europe, the UAE and the US. On the prices front, companies noted a further increase in their overall expenses at the start of the 2024 calendar year, with food, labour and freight identified as the key sources of cost pressures. However, with the vast majority of panellists opting to leave their charges unchanged and only 6 per cent hiking them, output prices rose to the least extent in 11 months. According to the survey, business confidence has strengthened further. Besides demand strength, firms expect investment and productivity gains to induce output growth in the year ahead. Meanwhile, the <keyword id="20459348" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hsbc-india-composite" source="keywords">HSBC India Composite</keyword> PMI Output Index rose from 58.5 in December to 61.2, indicating the sharpest upturn since mid-2023. Composite PMI indices are weighted averages of comparable manufacturing and services PMI indices. Weights reflect the relative size of the manufacturing and service sectors according to official GDP data. "January data highlighted a further acceleration in growth of Indian private sector output, amid quicker increases at both goods producers and service providers," the survey said. Service providers led the upturn, although both segments recorded faster rates of expansion in new business, the survey added.

India's Jan services PMI hits 6-month high amid strongest upturn in new business since mid-2023

We just got the official and HSBC <keyword id="1334" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="China">China</keyword> <keyword id="104215" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="PMI">PMI</keyword> numbers, and both are painting different pictures of the nation's manufacturing sector.
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/chinese-official-pmi-july-2013-7">Official PMI climbed to 50.3</a> in July, beating expectations, while <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/hsbc-china-pmi-for-july-2013-7">HSBC PMI fell to 47.7</a>, in line with expectations.
Bank of America's Ting Lu explains that the divergence in the official and HSBC Flash PMI readings could be driven by seasonal factors and the survey samples for each. The HSBC Flash PMI represents 85 - 90% of the respondents to the survey:
"First, the decline of flash HSBC PMI, which was conducted in mid-July, was likely impacted by the prolonged pessimistic sentiment as a result of the interbank turmoil in June and the uncertainty regarding the new government's growth floor (or even worry of an engineered hard landing as part of the so called “Li Keqiang Economics”). However, since mid-July Premier Li has made it very clear that his government will try to achieve the 7.5% growth target with some policy easing measures including more investment in infrastructure FAI. So the official PMI survey which was conducted late July could be impacted by the more positive sentiment.
"Second, the HSBC PMI sample is overly represented by small exporters which were hit by rising RMB, rising wage and sluggish global demand. However, the official PMI is more represented by domestic big enterprises with large exposure to FAI. The improved sentiment will surely support the official PMI."
The other logical question that follows is which number investors should pay attention to. And Lu writes that we should focus on the official number, since the HSBC survey is more exposed to exporters, and "exports now only contribute 10% of China's GDP."

Why China's 2 PMI Numbers Are Going In Different Directions

New Delhi, The Indian services sector expanded at the strongest rate in 12 years in February supported by <keyword id="16692020" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="favourable-demand-conditions" source="Orion">favourable demand conditions</keyword> and new business gains, a monthly survey said on Friday. The seasonally adjusted <keyword id="14109905" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sp-global-india-services-pmi" source="Orion">S&amp;P Global India Services PMI</keyword> Business Activity Index rose from 57.2 in January to 59.4 in February -- its highest level in 12 years. For the 19th straight month, the headline figure was above the neutral 50 threshold. In Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) parlance, a print above 50 means expansion while a score below 50 denotes contraction. "The service sector more than regained the growth momentum lost in January, posting the sharpest expansion in output for 12 years as demand resilience and competitive pricing policies underpinned the joint-best upturn in sales over the same period," said Pollyanna De Lima, Economics Associate Director at S&amp;P Global Market Intelligence. On the prices front, there was substantial moderation in cost pressures as input prices increased at the slowest pace in nearly two-and-a-half years and output charge inflation softened to a 12-month low. New orders placed with service providers rose further in February, with several firms suggesting that competitive pricing boosted sales, the survey said. Still, capacity pressures remained mild and jobs rose only marginally, it added. "Despite the strong upturn in new business intakes, service providers noted only mild pressure on their capacities and, as a result, a large proportion of firms left payroll numbers unchanged," Lima said, adding that hiring growth was also dampened by a lack of confidence in the business environment. The degree of optimism recorded in February was the lowest for seven months and below the historical trend as some companies doubted demand would remain this resilient. Others displayed concerns surrounding fierce competition for new work. Meanwhile, the S&amp;P Global India Composite PMI Output Index -- which measures combined services and manufacturing output -- rose from 57.5 in January to 59 in February, highlighting a sharp and stronger rate of expansion. "Services firms also recorded a faster upturn in new business than their manufacturing counterparts. At the composite level, sales expanded at the joint-quickest rate in 11 years," the survey said. The S&amp;P Global India Services PMI is compiled by S&amp;P Global from responses to questionnaires sent to a panel of around 400 service sector companies. The panel is stratified by detailed sector and company workforce size, based on contributions to GDP. Data collection began in December 2005.

US PMI Manufacturing Index Jumps To 53.7 In July

April Flash <keyword id="104215" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="PMI">PMI</keyword> is out.
The headline index fell to 52.0 from last month's 54.9 reading.
Economists were looking for a smaller decrease to 53.9.
Any number over 50 indicates expansion, so this reading says American manufacturing is still expanding, but at a slower pace than last month.

This should be an interesting one because the U.S. - the world's largest economy - spent most of the month with its government shut down as Congress struggled to cobble together a budget deal.
Congress eventually cobbled together a deal, but the fiscal uncertainties linger.
"[T]he most likely outcome in both the US and euro area is that policymakers will do enough to avert a crisis, even if this involves further 'kicking the can down the road,'" <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/citis-global-economic-forecasts-2013-10">said Citi's Willem Buiter</a>.
Meanwhile in Asia, the sustainability of China's growth rates remain in doubt and liquidity concerns continue to linger in the emerging markets.

Minutes earlier we got <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/chinese-official-pmi-july-2013-7">China's official PMI, which beat expectations</a>, rising to 50.3 in July, from 50.1 the previous month. Economists were expecting manufacturing to contract.
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/hsbc-china-flash-pmi-2013-7">HSBC Flash PMI</a> which reflects the responses of 85 - 90% of those surveyed, fell to an 11-month low<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/hsbc-china-flash-pmi-2013-7"> </a>of 47.7. This spooked markets and showed the Chinese economic slowdown is deepening.
Societe Generale analysts point out that the weakness in the Flash PMI was "broadly based, with four out of five major sub-indices deteriorating again." The employment sub-index in the Flash PMI report came in at 47.3 is at its lowest since early 2009.
With <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/chinas-excess-capacity-problem-2013-6">China's excess capacity problems</a>, we will also be watching the inventory of finished goods sub-index.

Meanwhile, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/china-august-pmi-2013-8">official manufacturing PMI</a> climbed to 16-month high of 51 in August. A reading below 50 signals contraction.
While the official series is still performing better than the HSBC series, both show an improvement in China's manufacturing sector.
China has said that is has <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/why-china-suspended-pmi-details-2013-8">suspended industry-specific data</a> from its official PMI report because they couldn't "ensure all industry-specific data can reach accuracy requirements," according to a statistics agency official.
"The official PMI report painted a picture of a domestic demand-led recovery," Societe Generale's Wei Yao said in a note after the official PMI release. "Although we remain cautious of the sustainability of this recovery, given such a momentum, data in the next two months will probably continue on a positive trend."
With China's Q2 GDP slowing to 7.5% and rising concerns about the health of the Chinese economy, Premier Li Keqiang said 7.5% would be the growth floor for 2013.

HSBC Flash PMI jumped to 51.2 in September, with a broad based improvement in manufacturing. There was a noticeable improvement in new export orders.
This is also up from a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/august-hsbc-china-pmi-2013-9">reading of 50.1 in August.</a>
The recent strength in the industrial production data is also positive for manufacturing. And an improvement in both the HSBC and official PMI numbers (the latter due on Tuesday) will add to signs that China's economy is stabilizing.
