<ul><li>The Union Cabinet today revealed its plan for how it plans to provide India’s 1.36 billion population with free public Wi-Fi connectivity called PM-Wani. </li><li>Any business, even tea stalls and kirana stores can sign up to provide public Wi-Fi service through public data offices (PDO).</li><li>They do not need to apply for a license, register or pay any fees, according to Union Minister <keyword id="6354886" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ravi-Shankar-Prasad">Ravi Shankar Prasad</keyword>.</li></ul>The Indian government has revealed its plans to launch public Wi-Fi networks across the country called PM-Wani (Wi-fi Access Network Interface). The three-tier system is aimed at providing last-mile connectivity and bringing all of India’s population of 1.36 billion online. And, it starts at your local tea shop or kirana store. According to the Minister of Electronics and Information Technology, Ravi Shankar Prasad, anyone can sign up to be a public data office (PDO). They don’t need to apply for a license, registration or cough up fees. Businesses can take services from <keyword id="15491" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Airtel">Airtel</keyword>, <keyword id="2003276" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jio">Jio</keyword> or any such internet service provider (ISP) and use their physical location to provide Wi-Fi to anyone who happens to be nearby. “Anyone can log on to the internet using the Wi-Fi provided by these PDOs,” he said. The second layer is the PDO aggregators. Their job is to aggregate the PDOs, their accounting and authorisation, according to Prasad. And, the final layer — the layer that the public will actually interact with — is the app provider. “The application will be available on the App Store or Google Play Store. There will be automatic digital authentication. It will be available on the government’s website as well. We will also spread awareness through newspapers,” explained Prasad. PM-Wani will empower India’s ‘digital revolution’ India currently has 120 crore mobile phone users, more than half of whom are on smartphones. The government justifies its new PM-Wani platform as the next step of India’s digital revolution. According to Prasad, the digital ecosystem — which includes direct benefit transfers, the goods and services tax network, unified payments interface, and other aspects — will be strengthened as more people have access to the internet, especially when it’s free. The Union Cabinet also approved the provision of submarine optical fibre cable connectivity between Kochi and the Lakshadweep Islands. The USOF Scheme for providing mobile coverage in Arunachal Pradesh and two districts of Assam under the Comprehensive Telecom Development Plan for North Eastern Region also got a green light. The project aims at providing mobile coverage to 2,374 uncovered villages. Lastly, they approved the setting up 1 crore data centres across the country. Government’s plan for public Wi-Fi lets anyone from the kirana store owner to tea shop stalls sign up to provide the internet

<ul><li>Shares of <keyword id="1061730" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Himachal-Futuristic-Communications">Himachal Futuristic Communications</keyword> have surged significantly by 497% from March 2020.</li><li>The largest provider of WiFi solutions says the disruptions caused by COVID-19 pandemic have increased the demand for home and industrial internet of things (IoT) devices and applications.</li><li>HFCL’s profit after tax grew to ₹90.69 crore in June quarter as compared to ₹21.34 crore in corresponding quarter last year. </li></ul>While the pandemic slowed business for sectors like aviation, automobile, and hospitality, some sectors related to information technology enjoyed a boost due to the digital transformation demand. Himachal Futuristic Communications (HFCL) is one such company that benefited enormously from the heightened demand for internet devices. The technology enterprise company manufactures high-end transmission and access equipment, optical fibre and optical fibre cables used in WiFi portals and creating communication networks for telecom service providers, railways, defence, and smart city and surveillance. In fact, it is one of the largest providers of WiFi solutions. Also, the company is likely to be a big player in 5G telecom services. The disruptions caused by the pandemic have increased the demand for home and industrial internet of things devices and applications, said the company in an investor presentation. The company has already shipped 1.5 lakh units of wi-fi and ultra broadband radio to leading telecom service providers in FY21. That being said, while ambitious with its intentions, ISRO has had trouble meeting past deadlines. Most recently, the Chandrayaan-2 mission set to launch in April and then in October, is now looking at a 2019 launch date. But, the chairman of ISRO also warned that the launch maybe delayed to March if the changes aren’t made to the spacecraft in time. 2. Ayushman Bharat Healthcare scheme to launch on 25 September Also called the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Abhiyaan, the prime minister claims that it will benefit nearly 500 million citizens of the country. The scheme aims to give ₹500,000 ($7,123) cover per year for a whole family. Inclusive of nearly 1,354 packages within the scheme, the measure covers 100 million vulnerable families. That’s over 40% of the Indian population. The initiative, though necessarily for a country like India where statistics indicate that 67% of health expenditure is out-of-pocket, has ruffled a few feathers. There are questions over whether using third party administrators is the best idea and how easy it would be to exploit the loopholes in the scheme. 3. Permanent commissioning of <keyword id="624" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Women">women</keyword> in the <keyword id="3790" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Armed-forces">armed forces</keyword> It’s not that women weren’t allowed in the Indian armed forces before, but with permanent commissioning, they can now be a part of the direct combat arms like the infantry, armoured corps and artillery. The current 3,700 women employed in the armed forces are restricted to officer posts. This initiative opens up a myriad of career choice where they can now apply for subordinate posts to achieve the ranks of colonels, brigadiers, major generals and lieutenant generals. 4. New agricultural export policy soon In a mission to double farmer incomes in India by 2022, the prime minister has stated that a new agricultural export policy will be rolled out soon that will boost their compensation. Using the ‘Beej se Bazaar tak’ (from planting seeds to accessing the market) approach, Modi expressed the importance of value addition. While no other details were revealed during the Independence Day address, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry did publish a Draft Agricultural Export Policy back in March that was aimed at doubling India’s agricultural exports and integrating agricultural commodities in to the global value chain. 5. <keyword id="95908" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Panchayat-polls">Panchayat polls</keyword> in Jammu and Kashmir It’s been seven years since the last panchayat polls in the volatile state of Jammu and Kashmir. The polls that were supposed to take place in 2016 were, first, postponed due to the unrest that followed the death of Burhan Wani and then, eventually cancelled due to ‘security concerns’. Even the local body elections haven’t been conducted in over eight years now. According to the state’s Governor, NN Vohra, the local body election will happen first over the course of September and October followed by the panchayat polls from October to December. Reviewing the country’s progress over the past couple of years, Modi made it a point to assert how his government has pulled pending initiatives through without directly pointing the finger at the Opposition.
