Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> on Monday told the United Nations that Indias policy on climate change action has been guided by the principle of "need, not greed", and that New Delhi is looking to increase its renewable energy target to 450 GW from the present 175 GW by 2022. The Prime Minister, while addressing the high-level Climate Action Summit hosted by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres in the UN General Assembly chamber here, also said that not enough is being done to combat climate change and that a world-wide "jan andolan" (mass movement) on behavioural change is required to tackle the issue. "Need, not greed, has been our guiding principle, and that is why India has not come only to speak but with a roadmap on combating climate change. We believe that an ounce of practice is worth more than a tonne of preaching," Modi said while addressing the gathering in Hindi. He said that India is also looking to take forward its capacity in non-fossil fuel, which stands at 175 GW at present, to 450 GW by 2022. He said that on this year's Independence Day (August 15), India had called for a "jan andolan" for freedom from single use plastic. "We hope that this will raise awareness against the usage of single use plastic," he said. "Not enough is being done to combat climate change. We need a comprehensive approach through education, values, life style approach and behavioural change, which should be turned into a mass movement," he said. "We believe that an ounce of practice is worth more than a tonne of preaching," Modi added. The Prime Minister said that in India, e-mobility and bio fuel mixture in petrol are being encouraged, while clean cooking gas has been provided to 150 million families. He also said that water conservation and rain water harvesting have begun in India under the Mission Jal Jeevan. "We are going to spend $50 billion on this in the next few years," he said. Modi said that 80 countries are part of the International Solar Alliance. "I am happy that India and Sweden, along with other parties, are launching the Industry Transition Tract leadership group. This is for creating low carbon pathways for industries," Modi said. Stating that a Coalition for Disaster Resistant Infrastructure is being initiated, Modi said, "I urge all the countries to join in." He also said that India will inaugurate solar panels in the UN General Assembly. "The time for talking is over, the world needs to act now," he said.

India to raise non-fossil fuel target to 450 GW: PM Modi

 India will also host the G-4 summit in New York on September 26, before Modi leaves for the West Coast for a packed two-day trip during when he will have meetings with Zuckerberg, Apple CEO <keyword id="191843" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Tim-Cook">Tim Cook</keyword> and Pichai. 
 
He will also meet Obama on September 28, his third summit meeting with the US president in about a year. 
 
Modi is expected to focus on giving a further push to early and urgent reform of the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Security+Council+">Security Council</a> and to send an "unambiguous message" of "zero tolerance against terrorism". 
 
In a letter to the UN Secretary General in July, Modi had said that that the UN must be made more effective for dealing with new security challenges as "we are now living in an era when non-state military actors are a major factor." 
 
India's Permanent Representative to the UN Asoke Mukerji has said that the Prime Minister's speech at the Sustainable Development summit will focus on "Agenda 2030" since he "has given a lot of attention to the substance of the development agenda." 
 
Among the ambitious 17 goals to be adopted by the UN for the next 15 years is complete poverty eradication, zero hunger, quality education, gender equality, sustainable cities and communities and clean water and sanitation. 
 
In his letter to the UN chief, Modi had also underscored that eliminating poverty by 2030 should "unquestionably" be at the heart of the post-2015 Development Agenda. 
 
"The most acute forms of poverty still remain the most pressing problem and require direct, urgent and sustained interventions. Addressing the needs, concerns and human rights of 1.3 billion poor people in the world is not merely a question of their survival and dignity, but also a vital necessity for an enduring peaceful, sustainable and just international order," he said.

Modi will deliver the keynote address at the Valedictory of the High-Level Segment of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) on July 17. India last month was overwhelmingly elected as a non-permanent member of the powerful UN Security Council on Wednesday for a two-year term. India, the endorsed candidate from the Asia-Pacific States, won 184 votes out of the 192 ballots cast in the elections for the five non-permanent seats of the Security Council. During the address, Modi will be joined by Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will also address the segment. The theme of this year's High-Level Segment is 'Multilateralism after COVID19: What kind of UN do we need at the 75th anniversary'. Held on an annual basis, the High-level Segment represents the culmination of the ECOSOC's annual cycle of work and convenes a diverse group of high-level representatives from Government, the private sector, civil society and academia. "Against the backdrop of a changing international environment and the unfolding COVID-19 pandemic, the session will focus on critical forces shaping the course of multilateralism and explore ways to bolster the multilateral agenda through strong multilateral leadership, effective international institutions, a broadening of participation and an enhanced focus on global public goods," the Permanent Mission of India to the UN said in a statement. The event, being held on the eve of the 75th Anniversary of the founding of the UN, assumes special significance as it will be the first opportunity for Modi to address the broader UN membership since India overwhelmingly won the Security Council election on June 17. This year's theme also resonates with India's priority for its Security Council tenure in which New Delhi has called for reformed multilateralism in a post-COVID-19 world. Modi had earlier delivered the keynote address virtually at the 70th anniversary of the ECOSOC in January 2016. India has had a long tradition of close association with the ECOSOC. The inaugural Presidency of the ECOSOC in 1946 was held by Sir Ramaswami Mudaliar of India. Increasing the use of biofuels can help increase the income of the farmers, create new avenues for employment, protect the nation’s wealth and also contribute to a greener environment. PM visualizes the move towards biofuel as a measure to empower the villages, promote cleanliness, pave the way to modern urban development, reduce air pollution in the cities, and support a plethora of green initiatives. Indian government and biofuel initiatives Efforts to produce ethanol from sugarcane started during Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s governance. However, since the project was launched by the previous government, the scheme was not given the right momentum. After the BJP government took charge of the central government after the 2014 elections, the ethanol blending program was initiated and the scheme operates today in more than 25 states and union territories of India. This project not only helped farmers but also saved about Rs. 4000 crores in foreign exchange. All about green fuels Other than sugarcane, the other sources to produce biofuels include spoiled crops, bamboo, grass, crop residue, cow dung, recycled edible oil, crop stubble, solid waste, and many others. The government initiatives to produce bio-diesel from the used cooking oil discarded in households, commercial kitchens, restaurants and other food processing plants can be used to produce bio-diesel that can make a cleaner, renewable and cheaper fuel. The government has recently announced that the state-run marketing companies will produce bio-diesel from the used edible oil. Bio-diesel can be mixed with any type of diesel. It is non-toxic and bio-degradable. The government’s initiatives in the lines of bio-diesel is a measure to decrease our dependence on oil imports and find alternative sources of greener fuels.

On the occassion of Teachers’ Day, the birth anniversary of Dr S Radhakrishnan, <keyword id="71" type="POSITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Prime-Minister">Prime Minister</keyword> <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> has taken an initiative to connect not only with teachers but with students, too. Prime Minister Narendra <keyword id="6354642" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Modi">Modi</keyword> will address the students from 3:00 pm to 4:45 pm through satellite link and live telecast on <keyword id="6408304" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="doordarshan">Doordarshan</keyword> and the website of the <keyword id="6386485" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Ministry-of-Human-Resource-Development">Ministry of Human Resource Development</keyword> (HRD). 
 
Nearly 1,000 students from various schools across Delhi will get the privilege of watching the speech at the Manekshaw Auditorium in New Delhi, which will be broadcast live by all Doordarshan channels to over 18 lakh government and private schools in the country, as well as on radio. Live streaming on the web would also be available. 
 Using the satellite link, the prime minister will also interact with students at National Information Centres in Leh, Port Blair, Silchar (Assam), Imphal, Bhuj (Gujarat), Dantewada (Chhattisgarh) and Thiruvannamalai (Tamil Nadu). However, students of <keyword id="17605" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Jammu-and-kashmir">Jammu and Kashmir</keyword> will not be able to listen to Narendra Modi's address as the state government has ordered closure of all the schools in view of heavy rain and floods. 
 
Interestingly, Narendra Modi will also take questions from some students across the country through video-conferencing. Analysts believe the move will strengthen the bond between the Prime Minister and millions of students of the nation. 
 
Many morning schools have changed their schedule so that students do not miss the first mass contact programme of its kind. If you are interested in watching the addressal too, turn on your television sharp at 3 pm.

PM Narendra Modi To Bond With Students On Teachers’ Day

When Manmohan Singh served his term as the Prime Minister of India, he was termed as the silent PM because of how less he spoke, on issues trivial or not. His successor, Narendra Modi, is known to burst into ex tempore speeches at several occasions, and is also known to use his vocal chords to the best of their ability. 
 
However, there was something different when they addressed the US Congress in the capacity as the Indian PMs. PM Modi, who was in the US for an official visit, used 15% fewer words than Manmohan Singh had used in his speech to the joint sitting of the US Congress. 
 
As against Singh's speech in 2005 that had 3,264 words, Modi's speech comprised of 2,754 words. 
 
However, the one similarity between their speeches was that none of them mentioned their predecessors, even though both made references to their contributions to Indo-US relations. 
 
While Singh had chosen Nehru as the icon in his speech, Modi used Ambedkar to derive at a similar point. 
 
Even though Modi did bring the topic of Indo-US civil nuclear deal twice, he did not mention Manmohan Singh even once. Similarly, Manmohan Singh, when he addressed the joint sitting of the American Congress on July 19, 2005, had not mentioned his predecessor Atal Bihar Vajpayee, but had used his quote of India and America being "natural allies."

NEW DELHI: In the last nine months, he made millions in India run through an entire gamut of emotions: anger, aversion, pluck, mirth, amazement and much more. In all these speeches, <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> looked like a man in control of his emotions. But on Tuesday, after being elected leader of the <keyword id="14666" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="BJP">BJP</keyword> parliamentary party — in other words, the PM elect — he choked with emotions. Modi wept.

Before him, his senior L K Advani had wept. In fact, he triggered the emotions in Modi. Years from now those present at Parliament's historic Central Hall on Tuesday, may or may not remember what Modi said. But few, if any, will ever forget the moment when tears welled up in the BJP leader's voice and eyes revealing a carefully concealed softer side. 
 
Responding to Advani's speech where he had said that Modi had done the party a kripa (favour), he said, "Advaniji ne ek shabd kahaa. Main Advanji se prarthna karoonga ki woh iss shabd ka istmaal na kare. Unhone kaha ki Narendra bhai ne kirpa ki (Advaniji said that I have done a favour to BJP. I will request him not to use this term)." 
 
 
 
At this juncture, the BJP leader broke down. He paused to sip water and took a moment to gather himself before continuing. 
 
"Kya ma ki seva kabhi kirpa ho sakti hai? Katai nahin ho sakti hai. Jaise Bharat meri ma hai waise hi BJP bhi meri ma hai. Aur isliyee beta kabhi ma par kirpa nahin karta, sirf samarpit bhav se ma ki sewa karta hai (Can a son do any favour by serving the mother? Not at all. Like India, BJP is also my mother. A son never does any favour. He only serves his mother in a dedicated manner)," he said. 
 
 
 
Like a gifted artist who makes the audience sway with the emotion, Modi appeared to be making others emotional. Some like Ravi Shankar Prasad were tearful. 
 
It was evident right from the very beginning that it was day of emotional drama. While entering the Parliament building, Modi knelt and placed his forehead on the green carpeted steps like a devotee before a temple. "This is the temple of democracy," he said later. 
 At the start his speech, Modi was overcome up with feelings while talking about former BJP <keyword id="71" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Prime-Minister">Prime Minister</keyword> <keyword id="47100" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Atal-Bihari-Vajpayee">Atal Bihari Vajpayee</keyword>, who is unwell. "Had Vajpayeeji been well, his presence would have been 'sone par suhaga' (icing on the cake)." 
 
Throughout the speech, Modi underlined the power of the pause during speech. Emotions aside, he not only displayed his command over the Hindi language but also spoke like a man in total control and command of everything he surveys.
