The minister explained that the scheme covers treatment for individuals involved in road accidents caused by motor vehicles, regardless of the type of road.  PM CARES donations from sportsmen From the sporting arena, Indian cricketer Suresh Raina is donating ₹52 lakh but only ₹31 lakh is going towards the PM-CARES fund. The other ₹21 lakh is going to Raina’s home state, Uttar Pradesh, towards the chief minister’s Disaster Relief Fund. "That's a brilliant fifty," Modi responded to Raina's contribution. Coal India Limited (CIL) has pledged ₹220 crore and NLC India has promised ₹25 crore. All of Indian Railway's employees have pledged one day's salary to the newly-formed Prime Minister’s Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations (PM-CARES) Fund, according to union minister Piyush Goyal. Collectively, the contribution will amount to ₹151 crore from Indian Railways Ministry. Mumbai, Apr 4 () State-owned Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) on Saturday said the government has nominated it for collection of donations for PM-Cares Fund.The Prime Minister's Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations Fund (PM-Cares Fund) was set up on March 28 to raise money for combating the Covid-19 crisis and to provide relief to the affected."Indian Overseas Bank (IOB), has been nominated by the government for collection of funds, which will be used to support the community during the Coronavirus outbreak. The funds will be assigned to PM-Cares Fund," the bank said in a statement.The contributions can be made by RTGS, NEFT, IMPS, cheques and demand drafts drawn in favour of PM-Cares Fund.One can also remit contributions directly by electronic clearing system (ECS) to the designated savings bank account of Indian Overseas Bank.All such contributions will be entitled to 100 per cent income tax exemption under Section 80G of the Income Tax Act.Political leaders, corporates, defence personnel, employees of PSUs such as Railways and Bollywood personalities are among a cross-section of organisations and people who have announced their contribution to the PM-Cares Fund.All officials of the external affairs ministry are also donating a day's salary, while some of them are voluntarily donating more.The Army, Navy and Indian Air Force as well as employees of the defence ministry have decided to donate one day's salary totalling around Rs 500 crore. The artificial intelligence boom was in full swing, and a $500 million investment that Bankman-Fried made using their money was looking prescient. Within the last month, some cryptocurrency prices — after diving with FTX's collapse — reached new highs. In a January 31 bankruptcy hearing, an FTX debtor lawyer <a target="_blank" href="https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.nysd.590940/gov.uscourts.nysd.590940.415.2.pdf">told the bankruptcy court</a> that FTX customers and creditors "will eventually be paid in full."While the jury wasn't given the chance to consider it, Kaplan himself will soon get to decide whether the fact that Bankman-Fried's victims may get their money back — and how he did or didn't contribute to that — will factor into his sentence.Judges ultimately have wide latitude in what they're allowed to consider while imposing a sentence. Whether they should consider the intended loss or genuine loss is a hot legal dispute that will likely end up in front of the US Supreme Court, according to Sarah Krissoff, a white-collar defense attorney at Cozen O'Connor.If Bankman-Fried went to trial an hour's drive away, in a New Jersey district court, the judge would have worked under the jurisdiction of the United States Third Circuit Court of Appeals and considered actual loss. But because he was tried in New York, controlled by the Second Circuit, the intended loss is what matters, Krissoff said."If you intend to steal $5 million, and you steal $2, it's still driven by that $5 million number," Krissoff, a former federal prosecutor in New York, told Business Insider.<div type="image" title="FTX Group CEO John J. Bankman-Fried's attorneys have argued that the lack of customer losses should cut in his favor, but prosecutors say that doesn't account for the efforts of FTX's bankruptcy lawyers, who had to liquidate real estate, cancel contracts, and sue to claw funds back from K5 Global, a celebrity-connected investment firm that Bankman-Fried invested money into.Ray, who is stewarding FTX through its bankruptcy process, wrote in <a target="_blank" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/currencies/ftx-sbf-sam-bankman-fried-prison-sentencing-john-ray-iii-2024-3">his own scathing letter</a> to the judge that Bankman-Fried left the company as "a metaphorical dumpster fire." "The value we hope to return to creditors would not exist without the tens of thousands of hours that dedicated professionals have spent digging through the rubble of Mr. Bankman-Fried's sprawling criminal enterprise to unearth every possible dollar, token or other asset that was spent on luxury homes, private jets, overpriced speculative ventures, and otherwise lost to the four winds," he wrote.Ray also said many of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/caroline-ellison-believed-sbf-directed-bribe-chinese-officials-2023-10">things Bankman-Fried spent customer money on</a> couldn't be recovered.""There are plenty of things we did not get back, like the bribes to Chinese officials or the hundreds of millions of dollars he spent to buy access to or time with celebrities or politicians or investments for which he grossly overpaid having done zero diligence," he wrote. "The harm was vast. The remorse is nonexistent."The recovered calculations, too, distort how much money customers are actually getting back.FTX's depositors would be repaid based on the dollar value of their cryptocurrency holdings at the time that FTX declared bankruptcy.So if someone purchased one bitcoin on FTX's exchange at the price of $60,000, and then bitcoin dropped to $20,000 in November of 2022 — which can be at least partly attributed to the chaos of FTX at the time — their credit is worth $20,000. It doesn't matter if the price of bitcoin has risen back to over $60,000 since then. The creditor would get $20,000, not $60,000.The value of FTX's assets after bankruptcy ultimately has nothing to do with Bankman-Fried, pointed out Rachel Maimin, a former New York federal prosecutor."It has nothing to do with the circumstances of the offense itself," Maimin, now a white-collar defense attorney at Lowenstein Sandler LLP, told Business Insider. "It's totally separate from that. This is something that happened almost by luck after the offense was complete."<h2>SBF's lawyers and family suggest he's neurodivergent</h2>Bankman-Fried's lawyers and family members have made <a target="_blank" href="https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.nysd.590940/gov.uscourts.nysd.590940.407.0_3.pdf">other entreaties to the judge</a>. They have said he <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sam-bankman-fried-parents-sentencing-submission-danger-2024-2">exhibits behavioral characteristics associated with neurodivergent people</a>. They asked Kaplan to judge him accordingly."I genuinely fear for Sam's life in the typical prison environment," Barbara Fried, his mother, wrote in a letter to the judge. "Sam's outward presentation, his inability to read or respond appropriately to many social cues, and his touching but naive belief in the power of facts and reason to resolve disputes, put him in extreme danger."Neurodiversity can express itself in an enormous range of ways, including autism, dyslexia, or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. His defense attorneys and family have left his experience undefined and have not given any indication that he has undergone any diagnostic tests. Prosecutors, in their 116-page sentencing memorandum, did not address the topic of Bankman-Fried's alleged neurodiversity at all.Prosecutors say Bankman-Fried's life and characteristics — he grew up in a stable home with caring parents, went to an elite college, and worked at an elite Wall Street trading firm — show that he knew exactly what he was doing."The defendant chose to abandon honest work to pursue profit and influence through crime, and he used the proceeds of those crimes to enjoy his own lifestyle of affluence," they wrote. "The fact that he chose to engage in a massive fraud is an aggravating factor, not a mitigating one."<div type="image" title="sam bankman fried" height="1934" width="2902" msid="108750990" hostid="261" sizebytes="739150"></div>Bankman-Fried's possible neurodiversity could come up again in an appeal, Krissoff told Business Insider. During the trial, lawyers and jail staffers <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lawyers-sam-bankman-fried-ftx-needs-more-adderall-concentrate-court-2023-10">tussled over access</a> to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/prosecutors-sam-bankman-fried-shady-doctor-adderall-2023-10">his prescribed medication</a> that he said he needed to focus for his defense.It's in the judges's hands to decide how much neurodivergence should matter."You'd have to show that his divergence had some effect, I would think, on his judgment, his ability to understand right and wrong," Maiman told Business Insider.In any case, Maimin said, the federal Bureau of Prisons deals with various neurological issues all the time."The BOP handles people with an enormous range of medical problems, including psychological problems, neurological problems, and probably has a not insignificant population of neurodiverse people, and is able to handle that," she said.At this point, Kaplan has formed his own view of Bankman-Fried.It does not appear to be positive.Before the trial, he <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sam-bankman-fried-bail-revoked-jail-alleged-witness-tampering-2023-8">ordered Bankman-Fried to be jailed</a> after finding that he repeatedly violated his house arrest conditions and engaged in witness tampering, including for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/prosecutors-send-sam-bankman-fried-jail-for-witness-tampering-2023-7">leaking personal journal entries by Caroline Ellison</a>, his ex-girlfriend and the former CEO of Alemda Research, and by sending <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/doj-alleges-bankman-fried-contacted-ftx-employees-signal-witness-tampering-2023-1">text messages to an FTX lawyer</a> offering "a constructive relationship."When Bankman-Fried took the witness stand for his criminal trial, often giving circuitous answers, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/judge-blasts-sam-bankman-fried-testimony-answers-ftx-customer-funds-2023-10">the judge did not find his testimony very convincing</a>."Part of the problem is that the witness has what I'll simply call an interesting way of responding to questions," Kaplan observed.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Warren Buffett topped the list of biggest donations in 2023.</li><li> He gave away 1.5 million shares of Berkshire Hathaway Class "B" stock valued at $541.5 million.</li></ul>The Chronicle of Philanthropy's annual list of the biggest charitable donations from individuals or their foundations totaled more than $3.5 billion in 2023. Four universities received big gifts in 2023, along with four scientific research institutes and a health-care system. The other gifts went to a family foundation and a racial-justice group.The list has 11 gifts because of ties. Eight of the donors are multibillionaires, and their combined net worth is $305.1 billion.Topping the list is a gift from the investment guru Warren Buffett, whose net worth is estimated by Forbes at roughly $119 billion. It also provides college scholarships for students in Nebraska, where the family is from.The donation is a special contribution that Buffett announced in November rather than one of the annual contributions he makes to the foundation and several other grant makers, which are payments toward multibillion-dollar pledges he announced in 2006.Buffett's gift is followed on the list by a donation from the mathematician and hedge-fund founder James Simons and his wife, Marilyn. The couple gave $500 million through their Simons Foundation to the State University of New York at Stony Brook to support the university's endowment and to boost scholarships, professorships, research, and clinical care.The Simons, who have an estimated net worth of $30.7 billion, have deep ties to the university. James Simons was chairman of its mathematics department from 1968 to 1978, and Marilyn Simons earned two degrees there: a bachelor's degree in 1974 and a Ph.D. in economics in 1984. They have given the institution nearly $600 million through their foundation over the last 10 years.Tying for third on the list is a contribution from Ross Brown, the founder of Cryogenic Industries, an industrial equipment manufacturer. In November, Brown gave the biggest gift to science in 2023 when he pledged $400 million to the California Institute of Technology. The gift will be fulfilled through his family foundation and a donor-advised fund; the money will be used to launch the Brown Institute for Basic Sciences.The center will support scientific research at other universities and will house the Ross Brown Investigators Award Program, a fellowship program Brown started in 2020 that until this year was operated out of his foundation. The program provides five-year, $2 million awards to midcareer, tenured faculty working on chemistry and physics research.Brown told the Chronicle in November that he no longer wanted to house the program at his foundation because he was worried about mission drift and controlling the costs of the program. A Caltech alumnus, he said the university seemed like the best fit for the fellowships.Now that Brown has moved the program over to Caltech, university officials are in charge of awarding the $2 million grants to at least eight researchers each year. To avoid conflicts of interest, only researchers at other universities will be considered for the awards. However, Brown is directing some of this donation — about $1 million a year — toward other fundamental physical science research efforts at Caltech. There are three other donations on the list that support scientific research.<div type="image" title="Nike cofounder Phil Knight" height="1530" width="2040" msid="106493227" hostid="261" sizebytes="160230"></div>Nike cofounder Phil Knight and his wife, Penny, made a $400 million pledge to the 1803 Fund. The commitment from the Knights, whose net worth is pegged at $43 billion, will establish Rebuild Albina, an effort to revive the economic and cultural prosperity of Albina, a historic area of Portland, Oregon, that was once a thriving Black neighborhood but fell into neglect in the 1970s.Black families in Albina were displaced by a ruinous mix of predatory lending, discriminatory government practices, and huge, long-term construction projects that shuttered businesses and destroyed the neighborhood. It was a pattern that played out in many U.S. cities during that era. Rebuild Albina officials plan to renovate the area, pay for education programs and education-related services for children and their families, and support a range of projects meant to deepen the area's cultural roots. The Knights are giving the money both personally and through their Knight Foundation.Daniel and Jennifer Gilbert gave $375 million through their Gilbert Family Foundation to Henry Ford Health to build two medical centers to take the fourth spot on the list. Dan Gilbert founded Quicken Loans and is chairman of the Cleveland Cavaliers. The couple's net worth is estimated at nearly $29 billion.One of the medical centers will be a rehabilitation center at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. The center will serve patients recovering from spinal-cord injuries, stroke, traumatic brain injuries, and other conditions. The Gilberts directed $10 million of the total to create a special fund to pay for rehabilitation care for low-income Detroit residents who have little or no health insurance coverage.The other medical center, the Nick Gilbert Neurofibromatosis Research Institute, will bring medical professionals and researchers from Henry Ford Health and Michigan State University Health Sciences together to seek a cure for neurofibromatosis, a genetic disorder that causes tumors to grow on nerve pathways throughout the body. Nick Gilbert, the donors' oldest son, was diagnosed with the disease as a child and devoted much of his life to raising awareness about it. He died in May at age 26.Coming in at No. 5 is a gift from financier Kenneth Griffin, who gave $300 million through his Kenneth C. Griffin Charitable Fund to back financial aid and a range of other programs within Harvard's Faculty of Arts and Sciences.
