Retail giant <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> said that it reduced single use plastics by 25% until August 2019, with multiple initiatives across its packaging value chain. State-owned Air India too announced that it will ban plastic products on its flights from October 2. This will include plastic bags, cups, plates, straws and more. They will be replaced by paper products. Creating alternatives for single-use plastic packaging: Flipkart Flipkart has a long term plan to use 100% recycled plastics in its own supply chain by March 2021. It’s planning to also use recycled paper bags for packaging. “Creating alternatives for single-use plastic packaging is one of the significant steps we have taken towards fulfilling our commitment to create a sustainable ecosystem. Our long-term vision is to eliminate the use of plastic and maximise the use of recycled and renewable materials,” said Kalyan Krishnamurthy, Group CEO, Flipkart. Indian companies have been cognizant of Indian government’s move to reduce plastic consumption and achieve recycling. States like Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Himachal Pradesh and Telangana have banned single-use plastics. Uttar Pradesh and Kanataka too banned products which quality as single-use plastics without using the term. Plastic bottles will be banished: Anand Mahindra Anand Mahindra too promised that ‘plastic bottles will be banished’ from his company. The chairman of the automobile giant which also makes electric cars, spoke at the World Economic Forum about the need of business leaders coming together for the cause. “The business community too recognises that this is not a problem they are solving alone or something you check on your CSR (corporate social responsibility) box. This is the biggest business opportunity for the next few decades,” Mahindra said. Meanwhile, another IT giant Wipro and its founder Azim Premji too stressed on the importance of recycling. “This year, we have significantly scaled up the use of renewable energy for our operations, which now contributes 40% of our total consumption. Recycled water now contributes to 42% of our total water usage” Premji said at his annual general meeting.

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="11893181" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="amazon" source="Orion">Amazon</keyword> produced just shy of 600 million pounds of <keyword id="12427295" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="plastic-waste" source="Orion">plastic waste</keyword> in 2020, a new Oceana report said.</li><li>An estimated 23.5 million pounds of that <keyword id="12367240" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="plastic" source="Orion">plastic</keyword> ended up in the world's <keyword id="12229472" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="oceans" source="Orion">oceans</keyword>, according to the report.</li></ul>In 2020, as more Americans than ever turned to Amazon amid COVID lockdowns, the company subsequently created more plastic plastic packaging waste than ever: 599 million pounds in total, <a href="https://oceana.org/reports/amazon-report-2021/">according to a new Oceana report</a>.Of that nearly 600 million pounds of plastic, Oceana estimates that "up to 23.5 million pounds" entered the world's oceans. That's equivalent to "dumping a delivery van payload of plastic into the oceans every 67 minutes," the report said.Oceana, which commissioned and published the report, is an international non-profit organization that's "dedicated to protecting and restoring the world's oceans on a global scale," the group's website said.Amazon disputed the report in a statement sent to Insider."Their calculations are seriously flawed," the statement said. "They have overestimated our plastics usage by more than 300%, and use outdated assumptions about the sources of plastic waste entering our oceans."The vast majority of the plastic entering the world's oceans comes from about 20 companies and doesn't include Amazon, <a href="https://sourceofplasticwaste.org/">according to the Plastic Waste Makers Index</a>. Instead, petrochemical companies like ExxonMobil, Dow Chemical and Sinopec are responsible for that waste.Just those three companies account for nearly 20% of the world's single-use plastic waste, according to the Index.Rather than companies like Amazon, which use plastics for packaging, the Plastic Waste Makers Index points to the source of the world's single-use plastics: The companies that produce the polymers used to create single-use plastics.Moreover, Amazon's reported contributions to plastic waste in the ocean account for a small fraction of the overall numbers. An estimated 17.6 billion pounds of new plastic enters the worlds oceans each year, the report said, compared with Amazon's 23.5 million pound contribution.The Plastic Waste Makers Index posits that, if petrochemical companies produced less plastic, companies like Amazon that use single-use plastics would be forced to use something else. Regardless, Amazon said in its statement that it's "making rapid progress in reducing or removing single-use plastics" from its packaging, and the company remains committed to "achieving net-zero carbon by 2040." It can take as many as <a href="https://www.brewersassociation.org/attachments/0001/1517/Sustainability_-_Water_Wastewater.pdf">seven barrels of water to make one barrel of beer</a>. Beer also requires a <a href="https://www.brewersassociation.org/attachments/0001/1530/Sustainability_Energy_Manual.pdf">significant amount of heat</a> during the brewing process and refrigeration soon after it's made, contributing to energy waste - not to mention, the beer-making process produces plenty of <a href="https://academicjournals.org/journal/JBD/article-full-text-pdf/0E6313746212">wastewater and leftover grain</a>. Over the last six years, however, brewers have been leveraging sustainability tools created by the <a href="https://www.brewersassociation.org/">Brewers Association</a>, which represents around 5,400 small and independent member brewers - about half of the approximately 8,764 craft breweries in the United States.<div type="image" title="headshot of Chuck Skypeck holding beer on the steps" height="1201" width="1601" msid="86492861" hostid="261"></div>Brewers that used the tool for four or five years consistently reduced their carbon emissions and water consumption and also saved money, Chuck Skypeck, the BA's technical brewing projects manager, told Insider. Breweries that submitted five years of consecutive data showed a steady natural-resource efficiency improvement of 1% to 2% per year, he said.Horse &amp; Dragon Brewing Company in Fort Collins, Colorado, is one of the breweries working with the BA to become more sustainable by using a benchmarking tool the BA developed to help breweries measure their energy and water use, carbon emissions, and costs for disposing of wastewater and used grains. "We're trying to chip away at this in small ways," Carol Cochran, co-owner of Horse &amp; Dragon and a member of the BA Sustainability Subcommittee, told Insider. Just the mere act of measuring usage is helping breweries to use less energy and resources, she said. Knowing your water usage per barrel of beer compared to a similarly sized brewery gives owners a starting point for change. "If you're way above, you can dig in and find out why or consult with other breweries in your size and area," she said.<h2>A sustainability challenge for smaller breweries</h2>For smaller breweries like Horse &amp; Dragon, which will produce less than 3,000 barrels of beer this year, it can be difficult to reach the level of sustainability that larger, more efficient breweries can achieve. <div type="image" title="headshot of Carol Cochran" height="703" width="937" msid="86492867" hostid="261"></div>For example, not every brewery can install large solar panels to offset energy use, Skypeck said. Smaller breweries like Horse &amp; Dragon, rather, typically focus on LED use or installing a more efficient compressor to reduce energy consumption. "About 7,500 of the BA members are brewing tiny amounts of beer on a shoestring," Cochran said. "We don't have the bandwidth to do the type of research the BA funds." BA membership also gives brewers like Cochran access to lessons learned by larger brewers such as New Belgium Brewing, also in Fort Collins, which brews more than 800,000 barrels of beer each year. New Belgium is an industry leader in sustainability, claiming its Fat Tire beer is the <a href="http://www.ismybeersustainable.com/">only certified carbon-neutral brew</a>.Larger brewers can capture emissions and reuse them to carbonate beer or during the canning or bottling process, but there aren't any systems designed yet for small-scale capture, and the technology that's available would require small brewers to use too much energy, Skypeck said. <div type="image" title="New Belgium Brewing" height="384" width="512" msid="86492869" hostid="261"></div>"We've learned that every brewery has individual challenges, and that if every brewer can start to measure what they're doing, they can identify where to make incremental changes," Skypeck said. He admitted that some of the BA's recommendations are simple, such as putting the brewery's lights on a timer to avoid using energy when no one's there or finding a local farm to take the brewery's used gain to use for composting and feeding livestock. But for brewers like Horse &amp; Dragon, those small incremental changes add up over time.<h2>Embracing water conservation</h2>With the BA's assistance, Horse &amp; Dragon has reduced its water usage by 36.46%, Cochran said. "Water is our primary focus right now, despite it being our least expensive one, simply because of the shortages we see and hear about in the West," Cochran said. "We're constantly looking for affordable ways to conserve, reuse, and bolster the health of our watershed." The US west is in a historic drought, and in August, the US government declared <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-declares-first-colorado-river-shortage-arizona-nevada-water-cuts-2021-8">a water shortage on the Colorado River</a>, impacting water supplies in Nevada and Arizona. The city of Fort Collins is even under a <a href="https://www.fcgov.com/utilities/water-restrictions">water-shortage watch</a>.Water is the main ingredient in beer, accounting for up to 95% of its content. In addition, water is used throughout the brewing process for cleaning, cooling, and packaging.Rather than just send water down the drain, the BA is teaching breweries to collect clean water and find other uses for it.When Cochran and her husband Tim were building the brewery, they consulted a larger BA member and were advised to buy an oversized hot liquor tank to capture and reuse all of the water used in the cooling process. That water travels through a heat exchanger to the hot liquor tank and is ready to be used when brewing the next batch or cleaning the tanks, she said. The brewery also collects clean water from a steam drip line on the hot liquor tank and uses it to water trees on the property.Skypeck also wants brewers to consider the quality of the water they use. The Fort Collins watershed has had two major forest fires, and when runoff hits the burn areas, it can affect the water quality, he said.Horse &amp; Dragon is a member of <a href="https://brewater.com/">BreWater</a>, 15 Fort Collins breweries focused on local water issues, including teaching the local community how to protect the local watershed.<h2>Reducing energy use beyond LED lights</h2>In addition to installing LED lights, Horse &amp; Dragon has been offsetting 100% of its energy usage since 2016 by purchasing wind power from <a href="https://www.arcadia.com/">Arcadia Power</a>. The brewery also reduced its energy footprint by committing to use locally sourced malt and barley, eliminating the need to truck supplies from other areas. Yet, despite these efforts, as the brewery's production has increased, so has its energy consumption. "Our average monthly energy usage has increased by 10%, and we're looking at additional ways to curb it for both the environmental bottom line and the financial one - it's the most expensive of our utilities," Cochran said.<h2>Buying local</h2>The goal is for all its beers to be made with 100% local ingredients, but Cochran admitted that it's a difficult financial calculation. While some sustainability efforts, such as using less water or generating less waste, save the brewery money, other efforts - like buying malt and barley from a local producer - cost 50% to 60% more than bulk grain from big suppliers."Unless every brewer is required to do the same, it is a hard financial decision to make," Cochran said. "We're still selling our product for a similar price as other breweries that aren't doing these things." Most brewers are reluctant to promote their sustainability efforts to consumers. "I think you run a risk of opening yourself up to legitimate criticism if you brag about the types of incremental changes you made," Cochran said.Make no mistake, Skypeck said, those small incremental changes are important. "The most sustainable way to consume a beer is in a glass that you're going to use and wash and use again," he said. In fact, he said, more than 65% of BA members don't package their beer; they just sell beer onsite at their taproom.

Here are a few states in India that have implemented ban on plastic in full force. <keyword id="20154" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="tamil-nadu">Tamil Nadu</keyword> The government of Tamil Nadu banned single-use plastic with effect from January 1, 2019. This move left the hotel industry face bewilderment as they are seriously scrambling for suitable alternatives to pack foods. The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) introduced some measures to comply with the ban including displaying the details about the ban on plastic, announcing plastic-free zones, stopping the usage of plastic items in offices, meetings, parties and canteens and utilizing the Corporate Social Responsibility funds to support initiatives on the ban on plastic and also to spread the awareness about the ban on plastic. <keyword id="13126" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maharashtra">Maharashtra</keyword> By announcing the ban on plastic very early on March 23, 2018, Maharashtra pioneered the ban on plastic among all the states in India. The state implemented a ban on all kinds of single use plastics and thermocol (polystyrene) including disposable items used for a single time and plastics used for food packaging in hotels in addition to plastics used for packing fresh foods and grains. In an amendment, the state allowed the use of PET bottles on April 11, 2018. However this permit carried a rider that demanded the implementation of buy back depository mechanism and recycling of the disposed plastics by the manufacturers. Himachal Pradesh Himachal Pradesh is yet another state in India that has strictly banned the production and use of single use plastics. The ban on plastic notification was issued in Himachal Pradesh on July 6, 2018. The state implemented a ban on all kinds of disposable plastics and single-use non-biodegradable materials in the state. Due to the strict supervision of the implementation of the said ban, some important cities like Shimla for example were found free of disposable polybags, cups and tumblers. <keyword id="68884" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Telangana">Telangana</keyword> The ban on plastic by the Telangana state was announced on June 14, 2018. The ban included plastics used in drinking bottles, tetra bottles, single-use straws, Styrofoam tea cups and containers, plastics that are below 50 micron thickness and other kinds of single use plastics. Talking on the ban, a social activist Ramanjaneyulu GV said, "The usage has definitely come down but all the plastic stuff is still there. But people themselves are now reluctant to use them because of environmental concerns." Take Home Uttar Predesh, Sikkim, Karnataka, Bihar <keyword id="37102" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Andhra-Pradesh">Andhra Pradesh</keyword>, Assam, <keyword id="6355772" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="meghalaya">Meghalaya</keyword> and some other states also followed suit announcing a ban on single use plastics. All these moves aim at phasing out the single-use plastics by the year 2022. However, the objective can succeed only when the ban is implemented in entirety.

There has been an increasing focus on sustainability. </li><li>Globally, brands like Diageo, Unilever Limited have started reevaluating their packaging to put the environment first. </li><li>However, so far, even limited-edition packaging from big brands this Diwali is all either plastic-based or made for one-time-use. </li><li>We speak to experts to find out if brands are making sustainability a priority in their business plans, infrastructure gap that India needs to fill in to become sustainable and when can we expect to see big Indian brands becoming 100% environment-friendly.</li></ul>For Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) companies and beauty brands, packaging is the final point of contact with customers. Having an unforgettable packaging design and <keyword id="10254633" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="eco-friendly-packaging">eco-friendly packaging</keyword> in today’s environment can help in communicating a disruptive image and stand out in the cluttered, competitive shelves. In the last few years, we have seen many brands become more environment-friendly and increase their focus on sustainability. Due to the lockdown and increased in-home consumption, consumers became more environmentally-conscious as they saw a higher than normal packaging in their own home trash that cannot be reused or recycled. Consumers, especially Millennials and GenZ, want companies to take sustainability and greater purpose more seriously and take action towards the betterment of our country. They are even willing to shell out more money or switch to a smaller brand. According to Capgemini’s latest research study on sustainability and changing consumer behaviour, 79% of consumers are changing their purchase preferences based on social responsibility, inclusiveness, or environmental impact. 53% of consumers and 57% in the 18-24 age group have switched to lesser known brands because they were sustainable. More than half of the consumers (52%) say that they share an emotional connection with products or organisations that they perceive as sustainable. Moreover, COVID-19 has increased consumer awareness and commitment to buying sustainably: 67% of consumers said that they will be more cautious about the scarcity of natural resources due to the COVID-19 crisis, and 65% said that they will be more mindful about the impact of their overall consumption in the “new normal”. This reinforces the need for big companies to increase their commitments towards responsible business practices and migrate to sustainable solutions to contribute to a circular economy. As a result, during the pandemic, brands like Diageo and Dettol launched limited edition eco-friendly packaging to test the waters indicating that more brands in India have started reevaluating their packaging strategy to put the environment first. HUL also brought Unilever’s ‘Love Beauty and Planet’ range of skincare products to India after observing an increasing demand for <keyword id="6955069" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sustainable-products">sustainable products</keyword>. According to media reports, companies such as Marico, Bacardi, ASICS, HUL, Nestle India, Future Consumer, Coca-Cola, Pepsi-co, Parle Agro will move to 100% recyclable packaging by 2025 helping towards a sustainable future. On the other hand, Diwali is also that time of the year when brands pour in extra money to launch limited-edition festive packaging. From Kurkure to Mondelez, all packaging from big companies is either plastic-based or one-time-use this year. So we reached out to experts to find out if companies are investing in launching eco-friendly packaging on a larger scale, what are some of the hurdles that are stopping brands from launching permanent eco-friendly packaging today and when can we expect to see India a plastic-free country. Infrastructure aid Talking about resources the country needs to inch closer towards circular economy, Arnab Ray, Creative Director, Landor said, “I think resources can be created if the mindset is there. Our thinking for plastic-free/recyclable products is normally limited to a small range of products, sometimes boutique and not something associated with mass brands. India is a large country, so it also means the Government playing a large role along with corporates. According to reports, FMCG companies are aiming to go for 100% recyclable plastic packaging by 2025 in accordance to the Government’s initiatives on plastic waste management. Also, in my view, change in perspective and innovation can be answers to creating more resources on a large scale basis. One of the largest sources of plastic waste, Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles used for beverage products, are being re-purposed to make apparels, footwear, and furniture by many companies. Intelligent use of recyclable material can ensure a more sustained effort towards creating products that are good for the planet.” Radha Ghai, Creative Director &amp; Senior Partner, Alok Nanda &amp; Company, said that India has enough resources for small-scale production but not for large-scale yet. She said, “We do have the resources and lots of new materials, which are environment friendly, that are being explored but not at a large scale level yet. Plastic free/recyclable solutions are being explored at smaller scale levels especially in cities where people are becoming more aware of being sensitive to the environment and are willing to pay extra for these solutions. We have the technology to produce recyclable packaging, but again not at a large-scale level yet, as in India we don’t have the infrastructure to produce for large-scale products. Cost of materials and technology is expensive unlike China, which has been the biggest market till now. The government has to support the manufacturers big time to create these solutions.” Ashwini Deshpande, Co-founder and Director, Elephant Design pointed out that we need to take a holistic view here and look at the entire packaging process. Deshpande said, “Going plastic-free is a significant and high-impact step, but we must look at all the emerging concerns like packaging materials, printing inks, distribution logistics, consumption, and recycling. Each of these decisions impacts the planet. Going plastic-free is not the end of responsibility. Nor is believing the packaging will be recycled if we put a logo on it. Sustainability is a mindset. Any change needs to start with the intent that can then convert to policy. So, this is not about having enough resources or appropriate technology. The question is whether companies selling products in plastic packaging in India (whether MNCs or Indian) have enough genuineness to move towards replacing existing practices, processes &amp; materials with sustainable ones.” Speaking about how change will only come if clients change their mindset, Deshpande added, “If there is a strong intent, they will be able to spend resources on research, innovation, and integration to meet the objectives. If replacing materials seems like a long shot, smaller measures like reducing packaging sizes to appropriate dimensions, reducing number of inks or area of ink coverage to reduce negative impact can also prove effective first steps. Recovering solvents from ink usage, greener fuels for transporting goods, incentivizing consumers for recycling would be some of the other ways to become more sustainable.” Becoming a part of usual packaging process Designers are constantly in search of materials that provide long-term hygiene efficacy, materials or processes that do least harm to the ecology. The topic of sustainability has also become a part of boardroom conversations between agency and client. “Interestingly, this subject is becoming a large part of the many conversations we have with our existing and prospective clients. From a leading Art and Stationery brand to big FMCG clients to even our clients in the Alcohol industry, environment-friendly packaging is definitely a topic of discussion, and we constantly see opportunities collaboratively with our client partners to see where discussions can turn to reality. Globally, Landor &amp; Fitch have launched a joint initiative called The Good Squad, which is a collaborative effort of all the offices in the area of sustainability, where we research, share knowledge and also map out future prospects for all categories over and above our sharp focus on FMCG. So, in my view, the topic is no longer in the back burner but very much need of the hour. The pandemic did put the subject to the background a bit but also made us realise how important protecting the earth and its environment is for a better and more sustainable future,” said Ray. Deshpande, on the other hand, shared with us that conversation on eco-friendly packaging is still not a priority. She said, “Conversations about environment-friendly materials are increasing. Most MNCs also have sustainability experts involved in the packaging design process. But honestly, it is far from becoming a priority. Marketers, designers, print converters, logistics partners, retailers, consumers, and recycling agencies must come together to form the policy and develop practices to reach the common goals. It is a challenge now because all these stakeholders are not on the same platform yet. But I see that as the only way forward.” While clients do consider environmental-friendly options, they are still not willing to loosen their purse strings. Ghai said, “When we do get packaging briefs and when we start giving packaging solutions eco-friendly options are appreciated for sure. The environmental concern is there for sure but costs become a big hurdle for clients to produce materials that are eco friendly. Hence, limited edition products do get launched for a small set of audience, but for a larger scale demand the clients are forced to continue with more cost effective options.” Can India become a 100% eco-friendly country anytime soon? According to Bain &amp; Company, 65% of global consumers are ready to shell out more for brands which use sustainable products and nine in every ten customers are also ready to switch to eco-friendly brands if price and quality were equal. While consumers are willing to shell out more money for eco-friendly products, the audience is still very small and sustainable market is still at its nascent stage in India. Speaking about some of the hurdles that are stopping India from becoming eco-friendly at a larger scale, Ghai said, “Unfortunately, there’s still a large audience that doesn’t really pay much attention to these issues. Sensitivity to the environment is there but still not very active in their head. General perception is that if it is plastic free it will not be durable or if it's organic it must be expensive. Also, other products are readily available at shops nearby or at a supermarket, so ease of picking up takes preference over specially going to a shop or to look out for eco friendly products online. Though a few brands are moving towards recyclable materials that are still not 100% eco friendly, it is going to take time.” Ray thinks it is challenging but possible. He said, “India is a large country, hence the sheer volume of products can make moving to a 100% environment-friendly market a daunting task, but not really an impossible one. Unilever, globally has reduced one-third of its packaging waste. If the government and the big companies work hand-in-glove to mobilise and fast-track the initiative, then change is certainly possible. Consumers are becoming more and more aware of the problem and are switching to eco-friendly alternatives. But again, these numbers are small, so it becomes imperative for the large companies along with the government, to raise awareness and help sustainable living become more achievable and a reality.” Deshpande opines it is a far-fetched idea but right support from the government and brands can make it happen. “While 100% is too idealistic, it will happen sooner than we all imagine if the government proactively makes it mandatory. On their own, very few Indian brands would take the steps. Also, why should the consumers bear the costs alone? The onus is also on the corporates. They cannot hope to maintain their bottom-line and recover the entire expense of saving the planet out of their consumers,” said she.

How ready is India to launch permanent eco-friendly packaging and become a plastic free country?

When a Twitter user pointed out to Anand Mahindra that his boardroom meeting picture has too many plastic bottles, the Mahindra Group Chairman announced that ‘plastic bottles will be banished’ and that they were embarrassed.

 Mahindra, who is very active on Twitter, has been working towards sustainable growth. The chairman of the automobile giant which also makes electric cars, spoke at the World Economic Forum about the need of business leaders coming together for the cause. “The business community too recognises that this is not a problem they are solving alone or something you check on your CSR (corporate social responsibility) box. This is the biggest business opportunity for the next few decades,” he said. He had also reminded the audience at WEF that on behalf of his employees of all the 100 companies from his group, had taken a pledge to become carbon neutral 10 years before the agreed deadline for the world in the Paris agreement. Meanwhile, Azim Premji during last AGM announced that Wipro is taking a serious step towards renewable energy. “This year, we have significantly scaled up the use renewable energy for our operations, which now contributes 40 percent of our total consumption.
