Here are some key takeaways from our first three episodes: Episode 1: PG Aditiya, Chief Creative Officer, dentsu Webchutney and Pooja Manek, creative director, dentsu Webchutney Bengaluru Dentsu Webchutney in 2021 was the highest scoring Indian agency at the Cannes Lions this year, for the second year in a row. This year, the agency got 20 shortlists, bringing home a total of 7 Lions. So we tried to understand what storytelling means for this dynamic young agency. Mediums and Creativity Both PG Aditiya, Chief Creative Officer, dentsu Webchutney and Pooja Manek, creative director, dentsu Webchutney have been responsible for crafting some of the agency’s most-loved campaigns over the last few years. We got to talking to them about how writing for the internet has impacted long-form writing and Aditiya started off with, “If long copy was Julius Caesar, then the internet is Brutus, with the last stab.” And truly, the internet has often been accused of killing long copy. However, Aditiya feels it has given birth to a new writing aesthetic. Today it is not simply about crafting a great video, it could be about writing that perfect tweet or creating that engaging reel. “We have a joke within the team, that if a tweet is taking more than 15 minutes, its not worth it. There are so many trends everyday and at times, brands try too hard to get the most manufactured tweet with very engineered writing. And that’s when you get caught. We all make the mistake of thinking that the younger audience, especially Gen Z, are kids. But honestly, it's time to consider them as grownups and trying too hard comes across as a red flag for them,” explained Manek. What works today On what works in today’s world, Manek says, “Today, it’s no longer about something that is embraced and enjoyed. It is more about what travels. For GenZ, it is usually quid pro quo, you have to give them something for them to give you something back. It's no longer about hard selling, or over-engineering, it's about giving them something to chew on, and that’s how you get their attention.” The internet is also an ephemeral medium. So how does one create engaging stories for the medium? “We try to spend less time on the theory of it and just make sure that whenever one of us has something that's worth not letting go of, we try to make it work,” added Aditiya. User-Generated Content: The Secret Sauce The advent of social media has also given consumers a voice today and user generated content has become an important tool for many brands. Webchutney has come up with a lot of social media campaigns that have gone on to generate UGC, making brands the talk of the town and part of a lot of trends. Talking about one such campaign they did for Tinder, Manek said, “For Tinder’s Valentine’s Day campaign, we were doing something around moving on. We were thinking of a few ideas and we realized that the digital age has made it harder for us to move on because you might want to move on but then you get reminders on different platforms. We all have so many pictures stored on our phones that we don’t delete maybe because we are attached to the memory, or we look good. So we launched a photoshopping service for two days and asked people what they wanted to replace their exes with. And we kept getting requests and replaced people with pizzas or wine. So we ended up photoshopping pictures for close to 36 hours, and that’s the power of UGC. We couldn’t have done it without people actually sharing those pictures. So you give the consumer something which is worth it and you just empower them and then magic happens.” Aditiya said that this idea also busted the myth that you need some kind of incentive to make a UGC campaign work because at the end of it, consumers were not exactly winning something but were simply ‘Axing their Exes’. In our 2nd episode, we caught up with Das who talked to us about his storytelling journey and how he has evolved as a storyteller, with the evolution of mediums and consumers. He tells us that his love for storytelling started as a child, when his mom would tell him stories from Panchatantra or Mahabharata. “My mother would enact a lot of those stories and I would be awestruck. And when a storyteller is asked ‘And then?’, that’s when you realize the power of storytelling. That’s exactly what we are doing while scrolling social media platforms, looking for our ‘And then’ on these mediums. And I feel, till the time humans are on this planet, the mediums will change but the navarasa won’t,” he said. The Creative Intuition For every creative professional, there is usually a method behind all the madness. For Das, who says he is bad at most languages he has tried to learn, it is more about understanding the human feelings than understanding a language. “For any creative person, it is all about having an intuition, to understand why people say what they say and do what they do. As a creative, you have to have an intuition about what will work for consumers. You have to dream of what people want and then create something out of it,” he explains. He also adds that the best way of bringing these dreams to fruition is by realizing that it can no longer be a one-man show. “Gone are the days when people would consider themselves God and think they know everything. That is impossible today. In today’s world, the only way of creating wonderful stories or bringing our ideas and intuitions to a proper execution is by ensuring you work with people who are smarter than you,” he added. Finding solutions to human problems Earlier this year, <keyword id="261687" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="leo-burnett-india" source="Orion">Leo Burnett India</keyword> launched ‘StreetEye’, a motorcycle mounted device to help map potholes in real time which had the potential of saving thousands of motorcyclists from accidents and mishaps for digital general insurance brand, ACKO. The agency used technology to solve a basic human problem, and according to Das, that is what <keyword id="35666" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="advertising" source="Orion">advertising</keyword> should be about. “If I were to reflect on what advertising is all about today, I don’t believe in storytelling. It is all about finding human problems and solving them. Once you are able to do that, you will automatically create stories. And that’s what we did with ACKO’s StreetEye. The brand said, we don’t want to be just about insuring people. We want to get two step ahead and talk about protecting people. We didn’t want to talk about the cure; rather we wanted to do something to prevent the accidents from happening. And this is just one part of it. Everyday, we are working with brands like Reliance, Ariel, Tide, CarDekho, Airtel etc where it is all about using innovation to solve everyday human problems. A consumer doesn’t want advertising, he doesn’t want to buy things. If you are able to become a part of their lives by solving their problems, people will come to you,” said Das. And a lot of brands, in the early days of digital marketing, would stick to short videos. At the same time, there are brands that have been part of long-form stories, where they have seamlessly become a part of the narrative. In the past few years, we have seen Unacademy do that again and again, be it with its association with The Viral Fever (TVF) for hugely popular web series like Kota Factory and Aspirants, or its recent talked-about IPL ads. The brand has, time and again, used long-form content to draw audiences into their narrative, and it has largely worked for the most part. To understand the brand’s secret sauce, we caught up with Sonal Mishra, Associate Vice President- Marketing, Unacademy, who took us behind the brand’s thought process and what has helped them stand out. Crafting clutter-breaking stories Over the years, digital has become a highly cluttered medium where everyone is trying to grab eyeballs where there is limited mindspace. So what are a few factors that Unacademy keeps in mind while crafting its stories? “As a brand, we try to be unique and do the unexpected, but at the same time be relatable and believable. The emotions one derives and the value that you add is what stays with the audience for a very long time. So it's very important to be relatable and believable. Having said that, it is also important to tread on different routes that meet the consumer at different touchpoints in their journey. So it's very important to latch on to a stronger human insight to build that consumer connect,” shared Mishra. For Unacademy, the goal is to engage with learners across the countries, be it in the metro cities or the smaller Tier II and III cities. Therefore, collaborating with platforms and creators who can help them reach out to a larger audience has been at the core of their associations with the popular TVF webseries. “Whatever we do is about becoming a part of our consumer’s life cycle, connecting with them by addressing a topic they can relate to. Our recent property Unacademy Unwind, which was all about music and unwinding hit a different chord altogether. Another campaign we did called Mistakes – the Greatest Teacher, did very well. The campaign said that Unacademy doesn’t just stand for clearing exams or being successful, it also stands for the journey you took. These are a few things that have helped us stand out,” she explained. Creating campaigns by listening to consumers Brands that are able to listen to their consumers, catch their pulse and create content pieces around those insights are usually the ones to woo them. Unacademy has been able to break the clutter through a lot of its recent campaigns. So what is their feedback mechanism that is helping them craft their communications? “Its not that we have figured it all out and know these are the secret ingredients that can make a piece of content work. It's a constant learning for us as well. But the benefits of these partnerships, initiatives, associations have been huge. They've helped us amplify the reach for the brand, build trust and penetrate deeper into the country. There were a lot of learnings from our associations like Kota Factory and Aspirants that we would like to better in the next property that we create. There have been a lot of pluses and we are learning at each step,” she added. Long-form vs short content While a lot of brands have been focusing on creating shorter, bite-sized content, Unacademy has associated with TVF and created highly talked-about webseries that have become a part of pop culture. Why did the brand choose long-form content over shorter content at a time when people are constantly talking about decreasing attention spans? “Understanding the psyche of the audience helped us. A strong story is something we mutually work on with our partners, but at the same time, from a brand standpoint, we have always ensured that the product integrations are so seamlessly weaved into the story into the content, that it doesn't actually disrupt the flow of the story and the audience can continue to enjoy and get entertained. So that is something which we are very conscious of. And that's why whoever we partner with also find the entire journey exciting,” said Mishra. Storyline: Where master storytellers tell us what goes behind crafting engaging stories that stand the test of time

Seeking to make the world a better place and making people uncomfortable are sort of a package deal, says&#xa0;comic book writer Kelly Sue DeConnick.
When we openly criticize the things we believe need to change, DeConnick explains to Business Insider, we make asks that other people find uncomfortable. This is key, she says, because on the other side of discomfort is growth.
DeConnick recently told the audience at this year's <a href="http://conference.99u.com/">99U Conference</a> that eliciting discomfort in others - and herself - is her greatest gift and job as an artist.
For example, her recent independent venture with artist Valentine De Landro, comic book&#xa0;"Bitch Planet,"&#xa0;unabashedly probes into gender dynamics and celebrates defiance. "If the word 'feminist' puts your toes into embarrassed little fists, you might find it off-putting," she says.
While DeConnick admits she doesn't think this one comic book series will necessarily make the world a better place, it could&#xa0;spark a conversation that can lead to change.
Here are five steps DeConnick takes to make people uncomfortable, which&#xa0;anyone can take to become what she calls a "professional discomfort producer":
<h3 dir="ltr">1. Lead with your heart.</h3>
"There have been times in my life where I have been hell-bent on leading with my jaw. Times - a lot recently - when I have led with my middle finger," DeConnick says. "But when I do my best work, I am leading with my heart."
This, for her, means being open, vulnerable, and writing the truth (with a "capital T"). Her goal is to do this without a concern for results or fear of judgement. It's not easy to access this courage, she says, but it gets easier with practice.
"But when you do, you find your way to a level of honest, incredibly uncool, messy humanity that makes people wildly uncomfortable. This is your goal."

"I believe the point of art and fiction is to connect us to ourselves and to other people," DeConnick says. "It is to foster empathy by demonstrating that we are, none of us, particularly unique or singular in our experience with the world."
DeConnick says that art and stories are the lifelines that map out our connections to one another. And weirdly, even though togetherness itself is uncomfortable, she says, people are much more willing to be uncomfortable together.
"So I urge you to seek out the artists, the colleagues, the friends whose work and whose presence pushes you to be vulnerable, because these are your people," DeConnick says.
<h3 dir="ltr">3. Foster Community. </h3>
Since it's easier to be uncomfortable together, DeConnick says, she and De Landro created places for their "noncompliant readers" to find one another, including community pages in the back of "Bitch Planet."

Though the first issue was released this past December and the fourth issue of the book just hit the shelves, DeConnick says she's already lost count of the number of people who have tattooed the comic's "noncompliant" symbol.
She says she knows now what her friend and fellow comic book writer Dan Curtis Johnson writes on Twitter is right: "You don't get the tat because you're a fan of something in the book; you get the tat because the book is clearly a fan of something in you."
<h3 class="embed-spacer">4. Listen.</h3>
DeConnick believes, as a creator, it's her job to to embrace and rise above her own experience, to listen with her whole heart, and to imagine how the world must look from another perspective.
Active listening, she says, is difficult and rare because it requires both parties to become more intimate and vulnerable with each other, which makes people incredibly uncomfortable.
"So of course I think you need to do it well and often."
<h3 dir="ltr">5. Seek to be uncomfortable yourself.</h3>
"To make others uncomfortable and still get paid, you must lead by example," DeConnick says.
As an artist, she has to demonstrate that being uncomfortable won't kill you. This hurts, she says, especially since we live in an age of comment threads, and artists are often a point of attack. 
"But Avengers don't limit themselves to fights they know they can win, you won't die, and on the other side of discomfort is growth," she says.
When she was writing the 2012 run of Captain Marvel, for example, DeConnick created a special unit of women called the Banshee Squadron.&#xa0;Though it occurred to her to include black women in the squadron, she didn't.&#xa0;
She knew that in real life, during WWII, Jackie Cochran, director of the Women Airforce Service Pilots, had turned down the black women who applied to become pilots. Given the opportunity to rewrite history in a storyline that was all about rewriting history, DeConnick says, she repeated Cochran's crime. 
"Every time I tell this story I am ashamed. I am uncomfortable. And I have to fight the urge to excuse, and spin, and scream, 'I am not a racist!'"
But DeConnick believes she is better for confronting the uncomfortable, and her work is better for it, too.&#xa0;"Doing the right thing is not a passive act. You do not get to be a good guy just because you figure you are not a bad guy."'

We make these services better."<h2>What's next?</h2>Despite its popularity, Wegener says Timehop isn't focused on monetization right now - the company is more concerned with growth and product development."It's not something we're thinking of for this round of funding," he says. "It's something we're thinking about for the longer term. The way we're thinking about it is that all of our energy should be spent on product development because anything else could slow us down. "You're leaving these breadcrumbs behind everywhere you go and Timehop can gather them and make use of all these digital archives you're leaving behind and enrich that, and the old archive of content and photos," Wegener says. In addition to showing you what you did on social media on this day in history, Wegener says the company could eventually also be a place for things that aren't just social media posts or photos - one day, you could be shown things like your Uber rides, the songs you listened to on Spotify, your Fitbit data, and even your text messages. To date, Timehop <a href="https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/timehop">has raised $14 million</a> from investors including Spark Capital, Randi Zuckerberg, O'Reilly AlphaTech Ventures, Shasta Ventures, Kevin Slavin, Techstars, Naveen Selvadurai, Alex Rainert, Steve Martocci, Dennis Crowley, Jared Hecht, and Rick Webb.At the end of March, Facebook debuted On This Day, a feature <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-launches-on-this-day-feature-2015-3">to let you see your old Facebook statuses</a>. People were quick to call it a Timehop clone, but Wegener isn't worried."It's pretty awesome," he says. "We see it as tremendous validation that we're working on something that matters and that makes a difference and making waves and it's a great compliment that they're doing a similar product. And we're not particularly scared because our aim is to get all your digital history - it's much wider than what you did on Facebook a year ago." On April Fool's Day, Timehop <a href="http://www.dailydot.com/technology/timehop-facebook-april-fools-day/">had its own tongue-in-cheek response</a> to Facebook's On This Day launch.Timehop still has some ties to its 4SquareAnd7YearsAgo roots. Its mascot, Abe, is a time-traveling, animated dinosaur who takes his name from Abraham Lincoln. One of Timehop's most notable characteristics is its quirky, whimsical nature. Abe provides cute, pop culture and news-related facts at the end of each day's Timehop update.Timehop's appreciation for the whimsical has manifested itself in other Easter egg-like ways too. On Valentine's Day, for instance, Timehop warned users before surfacing their old posts."It comes from an appreciation for whimsy and for quirky, fun products that connect with people," Wegener says. Rick Rosner - the second-smartest man in the world as ranked by IQ tests - sometimes feels stupid. 
"Not figuring things out faster makes me feel dumb," he told Business Insider <keyword id="6354868" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="UK">UK</keyword>. 
Of course, this is all relative. Rosner has an IQ of 192 and is used to mingling with and competing against high-IQ people
(By the way, the average score on an IQ test is 100, with most people falling within the 85 to 114 range. A score over 160 is considered a genius IQ). 
Rosner currently ranks second on the <a href="http://psiq.org/">The World Genius Directory</a>, a fluid list of the planet's top minds compiled from certified IQ tests sent in by listees and created by <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/an%20Austrailian%20psychic%20">Dr. Jason Betts</a>. 
"There is nothing else like the World Genius Directory," says Rosener, 54, and living in California with his wife. "Before it was created by Dr. Jason Betts, there was no comprehensive listing of people with the world's highest IQs."
Rosner is writing his memoir "Dumbass Genius," while "working on a theory of the universe."
Here's what he had to say in a recent interview with Business Insider UK:
Business Insider: Your <a href="https://twitter.com/dumbassgenius">Twitter bio says you have the world's second-highest IQ</a>. What is that based on?
Rick Rosner: I've taken way, way too many IQ tests - more than 30 - and on more than 20 of them, I've gotten the highest score ever, making me kind of the pre-2009 Tiger Woods of IQ tests. According to rankings compiled by the <a href="http://psiq.org/">World Genius Directory</a>, only one other person has ever gotten a higher score on an adult, high-end IQ test. 
BI: What subjects do you excel at?
RR: I consider myself good at math, physics, and stringing words together. Have written more jokes than 99.999999% of humanity, so can occasionally post a good tweet. 
BI: What's the difference between knowledge and intelligence?
RR: Knowledge is the facts and expertise you have readily available without too much thought. Intelligence is the ability to apply what you know to positive effect. Today, of course, much of our readily available knowledge resides in our devices, so knowledge can be seen as also including information-retrieval skills. Being able to use a wide range of knowledge to come up with new angles on problems is an aspect of intelligence Paul Cooijmans calls "width of associative horizon."

RR: My opinion of my mental ability has swung wildly. I could read well in kindergarten, during an era when parents weren't accelerating their kids, so that set me apart. All the kindergarten students were given an IQ test. When the results came in, the teacher told my parents I was a genius. I thought being smart was some sort of compensation for my lack of social and playground skills.
I believed I was brilliant all the way until my senior year in high school, when I realised that being the smartest kid in my class wasn't smart enough to make me the next Einstein (or even smart enough to figure out how to get girls to like me). So I worked on being a regular person, or at least a less nerdy person. Then I started kicking ass on ultra-high-end IQ tests and thought, "Whoa - maybe I can be brilliant." Then I took a bunch more of these tests and thought, "It takes some kind of idiot to waste thousands of hours on IQ tests (not to mention dancing naked for terrible tips and getting punched in the face while throwing people out of bars)."
BI: What makes you feel stupid?
RR: Not figuring things out faster makes me feel dumb. I can figure out just about anything, but sometimes it takes awhile. Didn't learn to properly apply the sleeper hold until 30 years after I'd started working in bars. (Not that anyone should apply the sleeper hold - it's dangerous.) 
BI: How did you get involved with writing for TV?

This was the first time I'd ever been around comedy writers. I liked them and asked to be an intern. I became a fact-checker and later, a writer for the show. Moved to LA, my wife's hometown, and, after years of bar bouncing and art modelling and trying to write a novel and still being in my socks and underwear when my wife got home from work, started getting work writing for quiz shows, clip shows, prank shows, and a sketch comedy show. My boss on a couple of these shows got a late-night gig, and, as I had shown myself to be tough, hard-working, and funny/weird, he brought me along.
BI: You've held some strange jobs in the past (at least <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_G._Rosner">according to your Wikipedia profile</a> you've previously worked as a stripper, roller-skater waiter, bouncer, and later appeared in a Domino's commercial) - what attracts you to less traditional roles? Boredom? Fame? General curiosity? All of the above? None of the above?

I scuttled my shot at going to an Ivy League college and instead worked on making myself manly, lifting weights and talking like Barbarino from "Welcome Back, Kotter." I half-assedly attended my hometown school, the University of Colorado, while bouncing, and stripping, and nude modelling. At the same time, I was thinking about physics - about the deep equivalence between the mapping of information within the mind and the structure of the universe and its information.
I can think about physics anywhere, and the on-the-job stress of work for which I'm not ideally suited sometimes helps focus my thinking on physics. So I've tended to pick jobs that are fun and rough-and-tumble.
BI: What's does your typical day look like?
RR: When I'm on-staff, I wake up at 6:30 a.m. Look at the internet. Take 50 pills (for health, longevity, and to make my brain work better) while reading the newspaper and eating breakfast. Do a quick dozen sets on my weight machines and then go to work. No riding elevators - take the stairs for exercise. Sometimes stay late, working on social media and exercising with rubber band thingies I hook to a door. Walk from work to a nearby gym. Read a book between sets. Sometimes think about physics. Drive home, stopping at two more gyms on the way. Eat dinner. My wife tells me about her day. Intend to do more work, but, being too tired, just watch TV, often the cooking competitions my wife likes.
Now that I'm primarily occupied with writing a memoir about my stupidest adventures, I've been writing from home. Refer to my old yearbooks because much of my stupidity commenced more than 35 years ago. Check the internet way too often, telling myself that a substantial social media presence can help win a big book deal, but really because I'm easily distracted. Drink lots of coffee so I don't take a nap. Watch the goldfish, missing the genius goldfish that learned to call me to feed it by blowing bubbles at the top of the tank. (Its genius eventually killed it; it got air bladder disease from too much bubble-blowing.) In the late afternoon or evening, visit a circuit of five gyms - LA Fitness, a different LA Fitness, Gold's, the YMCA, and a third LA Fitness.
BI: Tell me about your love life.

She's much less of a weirdo than I am. (She's not a weirdo at all, except for her love of crushing chocolate-covered Valentine's candy.)
I lost my virginity three months before my 20th birthday, which was kind of pathetic, considering how much and for how long I wanted to lose it. Later, I found out that the woman who helped me lose it may have specialised in de-virginizing nerds. Had a number of girlfriends and intimate encounters before meeting my wife, with that number being pretty good by today's standards (if one is so shallow to go by numbers) but not so good for someone who was bouncing and stripping before the "Just Say No" era.
BI: What frustrates you about other people?
RR: Most of the things which might frustrate me about other people also frustrate me about myself. The brains we've evolved are good at some things (including convincing us that we have a complete and an accurate view of reality even when we don't) but have serious limitations. I'm pretty aware of those limitations within myself (and have a saying - "The world's smartest rabbit is still a rabbit"). We're all limited and defined by being evolved creatures made of meat.
That being said, I'm most frustrated on a daily basis by people's ability to deal with tech being outpaced and overwhelmed by changes in tech. If tech stood still, we'd eventually learn how to gracefully incorporate it into our lives. But tech doesn't stand still, and we don't learn how to resist its dangerous and annoying aspects - texting while driving or crossing the street, living in internet-fuelled information bubbles - which of course are things that annoy everyone about everyone else.
Also a little frustrated that people aren't more freaked out by the future. Things are going to get very strange. I tend to scoff when politicians talk about the kind of world we're leaving for our grandchildren. Our grandchildren could be very alien to us - genetically tweaked, brain-linking chipheads.
