New Delhi, Apr 16 () Online food delivery, the silver lining to the economic gloom set in by the coronavirus pandemic, is likely to take a massive blow in the capital after news of a pizza delivery agent testing COVID-19 positive in south Delhi went viral and raised alarm bells in the minds of the already terrified people.A total of 89 people have been put under quarantine after a 19-year-old delivery agent from a restaurant in Malviya Nagar tested positive for the virus on April 14. Many Delhitees on Thursday woke up to a barrage of messages on their WhatsApp groups strictly advising them not to order food from outside anymore."Our area is largely an open colony, so we cannot check everybody who is coming in. We have circulated the news clippings in the whatsapp groups, with a message: "Bhai, thode din ghar ka bana hi kha lo. Fizool main quarantine hone ka koi faida nahi hai" (Please for some days eat home-made food only, you won't be serving any purpose being quarantined due to this)," BS Vohra, East-Delhi RWAs Joint Front told ."We have been talking about this news in the RWA whatsapp group since morning, but we don't know how to stop this. The government can perhaps take some steps, or at least instruct us to deploy some measures," he added.While many had already bid goodbye to outside food after the lockdown was announced on March 24, there were others who couldn't resist the temptation for a meal from a restaurant at least on a few days.But not anymore as they realise that hassle-free not always translates into risk-free, especially amid a global pandemic."My daughter is a big foodie. She would always pester me to order momos or burgers for outside. Many times I would try to entice her with home-made snacks. But it won't always work. So there were days when we ordered food online. "Today when I watched this news of the delivery agent getting infected, I made it clear to my daughter that we won't be ordering online from now. She understood and agreed," said Vandana Thapa, a homemaker in her 40s.Looking at the severity of the situation and fearing a dip in their online orders, food delivery platforms and several restaurants have reached out to their customers to reassure them of all the precautions taken at their end for their safety and well-being.Zomato, the online platform service whose partner restaurant's delivery agent has tested positive in this incident, said they are constantly training their delivery partners on safety and hygiene in addition to providing masks to them."Fifty thousand plus restaurants which cover a majority of our order volume have set up hand sanitisation stations for delivery partners. We continue to ramp up our safety practices as we speak," a Zomato spokesperson told .The food delivery platform on Wednesday launched a new safety feature where users can see the body temperature of their delivery partner on its app.That said, they did acknowledge that despite "best efforts'' home deliveries of essential services like food and grocery cannot be "risk-free"."Customers should be cognisant of the risks involved and follow careful package handling practices if they are getting anything home delivered," he added.Pizza giant Domino's or restaurants like The Baker's Dozen, Out Of The Blue and Deli By The Blue also reassured their customers by listing out all the safety measures in place."Understanding the current situation, we have taken some important measures for our staff and senior members and have made them stay quarantined at Hotel Le Sutra to maintain the utmost care and cleanliness discipline," said Rahul Bajaj, director and conceptualiser at Out Of The Blue and Deli By The Blue.But the fear that the incident would dent the food industry business further was palpable among many restauranteurs. According to Karan Tanna, founder of Ghost Kitchens, there would be a drop of more than 50 per cent in people ordering food online. The sector had already seen a drastic drop due to the spread of coronavirus.Anurag Katriar, president, National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI), too took notice of the event and admitted of "some impact of the incident on the consumer's mind".However, Katriar used the analogy that like medical professionals, anyone working on ground zero can contract the virus and that it was no different for the delivery agent in question."Ideally, if medical services are not getting impacted when their staff is infected, this incident should not impact the restaurant deliveries either, but in the minds of the people the essentiality of the two services is different and rightly so."We have been very steadfast in our advisories to the restaurants, which was reiterated last evening that they need to follow the strictest form of hygiene with services and as well as goods," he added.The novel coronavirus has infected more than 12,300 people and claimed at least 400 lives. <ul class="summary-list"><li>We tried everything on the UK and US <keyword id="58553" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Pizza-Hut">Pizza Hut</keyword> menus to find out the big differences between the two.</li><li>While the two <keyword id="41941" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="fast-food">fast food</keyword> chains look similar on the surface there were differences between the sizes, calories, and ingredients.</li></ul>Following is a transcript of the <keyword id="21654" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="video">video</keyword>.Harry Kersh: From calorie count to portion sizes, we wanted to find out all the differences between <keyword id="6358351" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="pizza">Pizza</keyword> Hut in the UK and the US. This is "<keyword id="6181" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Food">Food</keyword> Wars."Joe Avella: At a Pizza Hut in the US, the pizza size that you want to get is often dictated by the type of crust you want to get. For instance, this right here is the smallest you can get, 6 inches, but you can only get it with the pan crust.Harry: In the UK, our pizzas come in three sizes. Firstly, we have the small. [crickets chirping] OK, so they didn't actually have a small pizza when we went, because they said that no one orders them and if they do they normally just give them mediums. However, a small is supposed to be 9 inches across.Joe: In the US, at a Pizza Hut, the only small pizza you can get is one with gluten-free crust. This one here is 10 inches.Harry: The next size we have in the UK is the medium pizza. This one is 11 inches across.Joe: The large you also get in the hand-tossed, the pan, or the thin and crispy crust. This one: 14 inches.Harry: Pizza Hut in the UK also offers an all-in-one pan box meal, where you can get a large pizza of your choice as well as two sides and two sauces.Joe: Here in the US, you can get two box meal options. This first one is a medium pizza, five breadsticks, and some dipping sauce, and then 10 cinnamon sticks with dipping icing. And it comes in one box? That really helps when you're eating this in your car by yourself. [laughing] Not big enough, you say? Don't worry. Pizza Hut has got you and the family covered. This is the big dinner box. Ooh, man! [laughing] Look at this, dude! It's like opening the suitcase in "Pulp Fiction."[angelic music]This looks awesome! You got two pizzas. I got pepperoni, and I got sausage. 10 cheese sticks, and you get an option of either pasta or chicken wings. Get real. Get wings.Joe: In the UK, we got these ones from a restaurant, and they gave us a portion of six barbecue wings.Joe: Not to be outdone, we went ahead and proved a point to no one by going just a little bit further with our wing size options. You can get six, you can get 12, you can get 18, or 36. [upbeat tuba music] Lemon pepper? Nope, I don't like that.Harry: Who's getting the better deal for their money? Well, in the UK, a large cheese pizza will cost you 15 pounds 99. That's a price of 15 cents per square inch.Joe: The US large hand-tossed cheese pizza is about $13.99, which is about 9 cents per square inch, making it about 40% cheaper than the same pizza in the UK.Harry: So, here we have a large classic-crust cheese pizza and a large pan-crust cheese pizza. Now, these are the same price and the same diameter. We wanted to find out which one gives you more pizza for your money, so what we're going to do is try and weigh equivalent slices and see which one comes out on top. Joe: All right. We will weigh a large slice ourselves.Harry: So, Pizza Hut large pizzas in the UK are supposed to be cut into 10 slices, but they've actually cut this into eight, so what we're going to do is try and find the slices that are the same size, for scientific accuracy. Let's weigh a slice of classic crust cheese and see what it comes to. Now let's weigh the pan crust. So, our equivalent-size slice of pan pizza is about 103 grams.Joe: Similarly here in the US, this is the hand-tossed, this is the pan, both large cheese. Pan. So, one slice of pan is about 125 grams. Hm. Do the next one. Slice is almost the exact same size. 80 grams. That's, like, significantly less pizza. Same price. Ah, yeah. Stick with the pan. Look how thick that is versus this.Harry: In the UK, a large pan pizza should be cut into 10 slices, but ours is eight. Assuming it was 10 slices, each slice would be 226 calories, and that brings the total for a large pan to 2,260 calories.Joe: In the US, our pizzas apparently are all eight slices regardless of size, so one slice of a large pan Pizza Hut pizza is 360 calories, making the entire pie 2,880 calories.Harry: One of these also contains 99 grams of fat as well as 3,400 milligrams of sodium.Joe: This entire pizza also has about 135 grams of fat. 54 of those are saturated fat, which I'm certain is the bad fat. And it also has 5.31 grams of sodium. That, in case you didn't know, punch in, is 221% of your daily sodium intake. Don't eat this all in one day.Harry: It's got 100% of your daily flavor in it. What about the most calorific thing on the menu? Well, in the UK, that's a large stuffed crust pepperoni feast. If it is 10 slices, each slice is 292 calories, bringing the total to 2,920. One of these pizzas contains more than double your daily sodium allowance and more than triple your saturated fat allowance.Joe: If you want to have even more calories in your pizza, then you've got to go with the most calorific pizza on the Pizza Hut menu, and, thank you, Conner, that is, of course, the meat lovers. This entire thing is 3,760 calories. 400% of your daily saturated fat. 400! And it also is three times your daily sodium. If I've not put a fine enough point on it, don't eat this.Harry: Here's everything in a pan-pizza base from a UK Pizza Hut. Wheat flour, water, yeast , vegetable rapeseed oil, salt, premix (salt, calcium sulphate, emulsifiers E481, E472e, E471, flour-treatment agent E300, enzyme (alpha amylase, xylanase, glucose oxidase, protease, cullulase)), sugar, flour-treatment agent, ascorbic acid E300.Joe: In the US, our pan dough has enriched flour, which is bleached wheat flour, malted barley flour, niacin, furious sulfate? Don't mess with that sulfate. He's pissed. Thiamine mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid; water, yeast. It contains 2% or less of salt, soybean oil, vital wheat gluten, sugar, enzymes, ascorbic acid, sodium stearoyl lass-ih-tight. Lac-the-lite. I think it's lac-the-lite.Harry: Now, the UK list might actually look worse, but you shouldn't be too scared of the E numbers. For the most part, the chemicals actually exist in the US dough as well but are referred to by different names. For example, E481 is just another way of referring to the sodium stearoyl lactylate. Also, the E472e that's found in the UK dough is otherwise known as datem, and that appears in the US hand-tossed crust. What about the marinara sauce? Well, in the UK it contains tomatoes, citric acid, sugar, oregano, basil, marjoram, thyme, salt, onion powder, maltodextrin, yeast extract, rapeseed oil, guar gum, garlic powder, and silicone dioxide.Joe: Whereas our sauce contains tomato puree, which is water and tomato paste, maltodextrin, salt, spices, garlic powder, tomato fibers, olive oil, canola oil, citric acid, and natural flavors, so it sounds like it's pretty much the same thing.Harry: How about the cheese? In the UK, we refer to our cheese as mozzarella, and it contains the following: mozzarella cheese, salt, lactic cultures, and potato starch. It's actually pretty short, compared to the first two.Joe: In the US, the Pizza Hut refers to its cheese as cheese, which contains mozzarella cheese, pasteurized milk, cheese cultures, salt, enzymes, modified food starch, sugarcane fiber, potassium chloride -- [burps] Excuse me. Ugh! Natural flavors, ascorbic acid. Bleh!Harry: There is one thing to look out for on the menu. If you're in the US and you get a salad, the croutons contain azodicarbonamide, or ADA. This is a substance that's usually used to make vinyl foam plastics, which form things like yoga mats. It's actually been banned from use in food in the UK since the 1990s.Joe: So, this is my comment on the yoga-mat thing. It's always something. Even when we're trying to be healthy, our salad has yoga-mat plastic in it. It's ridiculous. Like, why do our croutons have plastic in them? Just get regular croutons without plastic! It doesn't make any sense. This pizza is the bomb, dude. It's really good.Harry: Here is everything you can only find on the menu at a UK Pizza Hut. And we've got quite a few exclusives!Joe: And these are all the exclusives you can only get at a US Pizza Hut.Harry: So, I'm not sure if it's like this in the US, but in the UK, Pizza Hut's operations are kind of split into two halves. You have a bunch of restaurants, where you will go and have a sit-down meal, and then you also have a bunch of carryout locations, which just do delivery orders. The menus are actually slightly different, depending on where you get your food from. The brown ones are actually from a sit-down restaurant, and the red ones are from a takeaway restaurant. We wanted to get a selection of both to see all of the foods you can get from the UK Pizza Hut.Joe: Per what Harry was talking about before, places for carryout versus delivery only, I have no idea. I just went on the website and ordered it, and this showed up, so.Harry: Let's start with the exclusive pizzas. So, across these few pizzas, we have pretty much all of the exclusive customizations available in the UK. We'll start with some of the doughs. On the left we have our gluten-free option. I think there actually is one of these in the US, but could be fun to compare. It looks pretty standard from the top. Then my personal favorite is here, which is the cheesy-bites crust. So, instead of just a standard crust, they get twists of dough and fill them with cheese and then layer those around the outside. Here we have a sprinkled, kind of, like, herby, cheesy situation on the crust. I've never had this one before. I think it's quite new. But it looks and smells pretty good. And then finally we have a vegan stuffed-crust option, which is great because you shouldn't be robbed of extra cheese just for being vegan.Joe: Right in the center here is the US exclusive Pizza Hut pizza. It's shaped like a heart, and it has all the ingredients you only get in the US. Went with the creamy garlic Parmesan base, as a sauce. The crust is a flavored crust, and I went with the Hut Favorite. I have no idea what that is. And exclusive meats I had put on here was Italian sausage, meatballs, and pork. Also has banana peppers. Shaped like a heart. Why it's all year round and not just on Valentine's Day is beyond me, but apparently you can do this.Harry: Nothing says romance like a heart-shaped pizza. How do you cut that thing, though? It seems like getting even slices out of that would be an absolute nightmare.Joe: Look what I brought. All right, so I guess I will just do...[slicing][jazzy music]Right? Yeah, no, I hate that.Harry: Now, as is becoming traditional on "Food Wars," what we have here is a UK Only pizza. This is a pizza with the cheesy bites crust, with vegan pepperphoni, caramelized onions, and rocket on it. It's actually not bad. I'm going to try a cheesy bite as well, because I feel that's part of the experience. I think this is the first UK Only creation we've made that I can actually endorse. This is actually pretty good. The vegan pepperoni, I've got to say, is actually good. The texture is pretty much there. It's quite salty, a little bit of spice to it, and the cheesy bites, it does make it a little bit harder to hold, 'cause it's like, what are you supposed to hold on to? But they themselves are actually really tasty. So, yeah. Thumbs-up for the UK Only.Joe: Pizza Hut's most infamous menu item is their take on the calzone, aka the P'Zone. P, apostrophe, Z, O, N, E. I have had a P'Zone before. They're actually really good. I was really bummed to find out that where we are filming it, in this part of the United States, the Los Angeles, California, area -- went on the internet, and sure enough the P'Zone is available, at least in Saint Louis and at least in Cincinnati, so if anyone watching in the United States would like to ship me a P'Zone from their P'Zone-plentiful part of the United States, please do. Um, I don't know how I'd get you my address. [laughs]Harry: Now, as you can see, we have a bunch of exclusive sides in the UK. I'm not entirely sure what all of these are, because some of them look very similar, so we'll have a run-through and I'll try and point out the ones I can identify. So, at the back here, we've got some potato wedges. I'm never really sure why restaurants offer potato wedges, because to me they're just worse than fries in pretty much every metric. Then we've got a bunch of different chicken options. We've got these chicken-strip things here, we've got these spicy-looking nugget things, we've got these herby-looking nugget things, and then we've got some plain-looking nugget things, as well as these, I think, Southern fried bites. Apologies to actual Southern Americans, because I'm sure they are an abomination.Joe: Here in America, we have something called WingStreet. From what I understand, WingStreet was a separate business, or a separate restaurant chain, that is owned by the same brand, and therefore you can get WingStreet wings when you order from Pizza Hut. Anyway, we have a bunch of different sauce options, like we have a honey barbecue, Buffalo, which can be mild or medium or burning hot, garlic Parmesan, and, of course... what was this one that I hate?Conner: Lemon pepper.Joe: Lemon pepper, which I don't like. You can also get a Hawaiian teriyaki, a spicy garlic, a Cajun-style dry rub, or you can just get these bad boys naked. Oof! Worst time to burp there.Harry: Why do all the WingStreet containers look like Death Stars? That seems like a suboptimal way to transport your food. It's like a half-bowl, and the lid is like another bowl. Joe: Sauce talk. Deep voice: Sauce talk!Joe: You can also get exclusive sauces on the side, for instance, blue cheese. You can get yourself some ranch, a cup of marinara, and the Buffalo sauces of various temperatures, honey barbecue sauce. Sides of sauces. We've got you covered.Harry: Outside of that, we've got some nachos. We've also got these cheesy bites, which are just triangles of cheese that get breaded and deep-fried, because I guess cholesterol isn't a thing anymore. We've also got some onion rings, we've got some corncobs, we have cheesy garlic bread, regular garlic bread, and we also have mac 'n' cheese, but it turns out... you can also do that with mac 'n' cheese.Joe: Also, WingStreet fries, just orders of fries that it looks like you can get pretty much the same flavors as the wings. I'm going to toss them in the same sauce. Here's a lemon pepper. Ugh, not as good. I don't like lemon pepper, I'm finding out. Something I thought every Pizza Hut around the world had, apparently not, are breadsticks. Looks like five sticks.Harry: Joe, we went over this in the Papa John's episode. That is not a breadstick.Joe: And you can also get cheesy bread, which is like breadsticks, but they bake them with cheese on top of them. This is the chicken Alfredo. [laughs] Is this just how they packed it? There's a Buffalo sauce and a barbecue sauce in here. Why? These guys right here, I'm probably going to pronounce them wrong. Quepapas. Like tater tots? Yeah!Harry: We also have a bunch of exclusive desserts at UK Pizza Huts. If you're eating at a restaurant, you have a few options, including one of these brownie slices. This is actually a vegan vanilla cheesecake, which looks and smells really good, I've got to say. And then you have a cookie-dough thing, which usually comes with a little scoop of ice cream as well.Joe: And the desserts. Huh! We're almost done, people. The thing right in front of me are Cinnabon mini buns. This is the Ultimate Hershey's chocolate chip cookie.Harry: If you're getting delivery from Pizza Hut in the UK, there are also some exclusive options. This is another sort of giant-cookie-dough situation. Bites of Ben &amp; Jerry's cookie dough. Again, it's usually served frozen, but they've now unfortunately defrosted. And then they have some branded ice creams as well.Joe: We've got their triple chocolate brownie. Last but not least. Cinnamon sticks with a lot of icing. You know I gotta do it.[upbeat string music][Joe sighs]Harry: See, I always think that these look like little tables for mice. So you could just put the tiny slice on the tiny table. [laughs] And have a little mouse dinner party.

But those who expected to find a superb <keyword id="2437016" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Thriller-erotica">thriller-erotica</keyword> in <keyword id="2296101" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vishal-Pandya">Vishal Pandya</keyword>’s <keyword id="753788" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Hate-Story">Hate Story</keyword> 2 could be disappointed – neither the sizzle, nor the thrill matched the earlier Hate Story (a 2012 film directed by <keyword id="30014" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Vivek-Agnihotri">Vivek Agnihotri</keyword> and starring <keyword id="455333" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Paoli-Dam">Paoli Dam</keyword>, Gulshan Devaiah and <keyword id="8255" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Nikhil-Dwivedi">Nikhil Dwivedi</keyword>). In spite of some spirited acting by <keyword id="22533" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Surveen-Chawla">Surveen Chawla</keyword> and <keyword id="21678" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="sushant-singh">Sushant Singh</keyword>, the current movie turned out to be a mediocre <keyword id="1321184" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="revenge-drama">revenge drama</keyword> with lots of skin show, but still managed to do amazingly well at the <keyword id="827271" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Domestic-Box-Office">domestic box office</keyword>. Produced by <keyword id="24468" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bhushan-Kumar">Bhushan Kumar</keyword> and <keyword id="15260" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="vikram-bhatt">Vikram Bhatt</keyword>, Hate Story 2 netted Rs 5.46 crore on the opening Friday (trade figure stood at Rs 4.61 crore) and went on to collect Rs 15.85 crore nett in the first three days (trade figure was Rs 14.30 crore). But there was the usual Monday drop and the movie collected around Rs 2.68 crore on the fourth day (trade figure was Rs 2.11 crore), thus netting a total of Rs 18.53 crore after Day 4. 
 
Hate Story 2 hit 600 screens across the country but thanks to the fantastic business it is doing, the distributors now want it to be released in 1,200 screens pan-India, as per media reports. The opening weekend collections of Hate Story 2 were bigger than some A-list movies, including <keyword id="6377522" type="POSITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="queen">Queen</keyword>, Highway and Dedh Ishqiya, and the 15th highest in 2014. It had a budget of Rs 14 crore (cost and P&amp;A), which means the flick is making profits. Interestingly, the official trailer of Hate Story 2 crossed over 4 million views on <keyword id="10879" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="YouTube">YouTube</keyword> within four days of its launch, but if you ask us, it’s a total put-off in many ways in spite of earning more than the other three releases. 
 
In stark contrast, Vir Das-Vega Tamotia-Anindita Nayar-starrer <keyword id="2336494" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Amit-Sahni">Amit Sahni</keyword> Ki List turns out to be a refreshing <keyword id="1636016" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="rom-com">rom-com</keyword> with loads of laughter and some pertinent points about relationships. But <keyword id="664154" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ajay-Bhuyan">Ajay Bhuyan</keyword>’s directorial endeavour failed to win hearts, netting a little over Rs 3.1 crore at home after the first Monday. Pizza 3D, a remake of the 2012 Tamil <keyword id="828468" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Supernatural">supernatural</keyword> thriller, came loaded with terror bytes but earned around Rs 2.87 crore nett in the first three days. Incidentally, the Tamil version of this movie was a sleeper hit. 
 
 
 
However, the worst is Ashok Tyagi-directed Riyasat, yet another version of Mario Puzo’s Godfather and <keyword id="1076" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="superstar">superstar</keyword> Rajesh Khanna’s (<keyword id="4753" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Saheb">Saheb</keyword>) last outing. First day collections stood at a paltry Rs 36 lakh and the rest of the numbers are yet to come in. But industry insiders expect it to be a box office bomb and Khanna’s listless presence is not likely to help it. His serio-comic vulnerability reminds one of the young gang from Dil Chahta Hai and the carefully made check list of partner’s qualities once again makes us realise life does not follow a perfect script in spite of all our efforts. But the movie loses pace in-between, loses coherence and a drab ending ultimately mars the freshness.

It's not a big challenge when you're live, but when you're not, you have to make yourself seem human. If you have to use profanity, if you have to wear funny clothes, that's fine."To sum it up: Don't be professional, ever. Don't ever be professional because it's boring. Everyone is professional. Be a real person. The last time I was interviewed on CBS, I wore a Batman t-shirt. If people see you're comfortable in your own skin, they say to themselves, 'I want to be comfortable in my own skin.' It may not be the same skin, but you're still comfortable."<h2>Outsourcing is invaluable</h2>"Another thing: outsourcing. They all outsource the menial things." <h2>The more successful you are, the more you have at stake</h2>"One more thing I learned is that once you start making money and start having a lot, it's a lot easier to lose than when you don't have money. That happened to me - I was making $30,000 a month and I was doing really great for a long time, but that was mostly SEO because that's what I'd learned. When that train came to a stop, I lost that entire income. It was gone. I still had money in the bank, but I got angry at the whole internet thing. I opened some nightclubs, flipped some businesses, but then I missed that sitting on my butt lifestyle. When I sold the club, I started taking on Facebook ad clients and got back on my feet financially. Steps away, kids played soccer, a little girl tested out the training wheels on her bicycle, and a neighbor led a free crocheting class.Just a few years ago, that same road — 34th Avenue — was a traffic-clogged artery. But a years-long, grass-roots effort has turned a 1.3-mile-long, 26-block stretch of the avenue — which the city council <a target="_blank" href="https://legistar.council.nyc.gov/LegislationDetail.aspx?ID=6454385&amp;GUID=147D2DDE-18FE-49FE-B960-AA2EDDF24EFF&amp;Options=&amp;Search=">renamed Paseo Park</a> — into the crown jewel of New York City's embattled <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/html/pedestrians/openstreets.shtml">Open Streets Initiative</a>.As New York Gov. Kathy Hochul <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/06/04/nyregion/congestion-pricing-hochul-delayed.html">reverses</a> the city's attempt to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nyc-congestion-pricing-toll-manhattan-drivers-new-jersey-democrats-commuters-2023-6">reduce congestion in Manhattan</a>, Jackson Heights has managed to cement its open street into a feature the community isn't willing to give up.<h2 id="61261b35-9a26-4ac8-aad6-9b2fa2f2b7cc">Turning a dangerous street into a center of community</h2>O'Doherty-Naranjo remembers that the principal of a public middle school on 34th Avenue — one of nine schools with thousands of students within about 35 blocks — had to direct traffic as kids filtered across the street at dismissal, fighting for space with drivers."Drivers would literally just scream and honk at the principal as a thousand kids are crossing the district," said O'Doherty-Naranjo, who was the president of the school's parent-teacher association.Then, one afternoon in March 2019, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/12-year-old-hit-by-car-near-queens-school-police/1563533/">a 12-year-old boy was hit and seriously injured</a> by a driver in a Jeep outside another of 34th Avenue's middle schools. Suddenly, schools were closed and traffic slowed to a trickle. Nearby, Elmhurst Hospital Center became one of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/25/nyregion/nyc-coronavirus-hospitals.html">hardest-hit medical centers</a> in the country.The lockdown also shed a harsh spotlight on the area's lack of green space. Jackson Heights has <a target="_blank" href="https://council.nyc.gov/data/data-team/park-equity-covid-2022/#:~:text=Jackson%20Heights%20has%20the%2016th,22.8%20acres%20per%20100%2C000%20residents.">among the least amount of park space</a> of any New York City neighborhood.With people cooped up in small apartments, O'Doherty-Naranjo and a group of other neighbors decided to start pushing to restrict traffic along most of 34th Avenue. They got the go-ahead, but they needed manpower to enforce it. About 100 volunteers were soon recruited to help set up and take down metal barricades at each intersection every morning and night to block the street from through traffic.These days, 34th Avenue is the neighborhood's public backyard. All pass-through vehicle traffic is prohibited between 7 am and 8 pm every day of the year, although cars can still park on all of the blocks that aren't plazas.The blocks immediately outside each school are permanently vehicle-free, an increasingly popular <a target="_blank" href="https://nyc.streetsblog.org/2022/08/01/new-york-far-behind-other-cities-in-building-car-free-school-streets">safety measure</a> around the world. Residents have cleaner air and quieter and safer streets, as well as a community space they desperately need. Traffic accidents on 34th Avenue involving pedestrians are down 61%, according to the City Department of Transportation, and crashes with injuries are down 34%.On a Friday afternoon in late May, 19-year-old City College student Braulio Tellez hung out eating pizza with his mom and sister while perched on the tree-lined median that runs along the center of the open street. Tellez grew up in the neighborhood and sometimes carries his telescope out at night to observe the moon and planets from the quiet of the road."It helps remove all stress," Tellez said of the traffic-restricted street. "I love it."<div type="image" title="The 34th Avenue Open Street is 26 traffic-restricted blocks with a handful of entirely car-free plazas outside schools." height="945" width="1265" msid="110838603" hostid="261" sizebytes="245156"></div><h2 id="faef4d13-8367-4bba-aab7-7b5a196af97d">A 'superhighway' of pedestrians and bikes</h2>Jim Burke, a longtime pedestrian and transit advocate, had lived in his apartment building right on 34th Avenue for a dozen years when the pandemic hit. But he knew virtually none of his neighbors. In the early days of the pandemic, bored in their apartment, Burke and his partner started regularly playing a coin-tossing game in the street. Soon, neighbors and kids began joining in.Burke grew up in the Bronx and the Rockaways and remembers that as kids, he and his friends "owned the streets," where they played every day. He figured adults and kids alike should have that same experience on 34th Avenue."One thing led to another and then we started raising money," Burke said. "People looked out their windows and said, 'Oh that looks like fun, I don't want to stay in my house for another minute.'"O'Doherty-Naranjo and Burke co-founded the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.34aveopenstreets.com/home">34th Avenue Open Streets Coalition</a> and used the funds they raised to put on programming — hiring yoga and Zumba instructors to teach free classes, volunteers to lead English lessons, and even enlisting doctors to dispense free medical advice. The effort was entirely volunteer-powered for the first 18 months before the city stepped in to help."In the summer, I see a lot of people doing activities, or going out, walking, kids playing with chalk — just cool things that I didn't have when growing up," said Yorladiz, a Jackson Heights native who regularly walks her four-year-old daughter up and down 34th Avenue. "It's yoga night, it's salsa night — they're always doing something."These days, Burke can't spend more than a few minutes on 34th Avenue without running into a neighbor he knows."It's become this superhighway of kids and families and neighbors," O'Doherty-Naranjo said.These days, controversy on 34th Avenue mostly concerns a surge in mopeds, which tend to use the street as a cut-through.Shekar Krishnan, the councilman who represents the neighborhood, held a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.qchron.com/editions/central/krishnan-dot-must-curtail-mopeds/article_3556fb64-1f90-11ef-a0d4-6b3281da2713.html">"Moped Crisis" town hall</a> recently and says the City needs to come up with a plan to redesign the street to keep mopeds off of it and create safer ways for them to travel on other streets. If the Department of Transportation is going "to oversee the expansion of public space, in addition to their other work," Krishnan said, "they need to get far more serious, and ambitious, and creative in how they do so — and, frankly, listen to the communities."<div type="image" title="People kick around a soccer ball while an older woman walks by on 34th Avenue in Jackson Heights, Queens." height="946" width="1272" msid="110838601" hostid="261" sizebytes="318092"></div>Burke and O'Doherty-Naranjo don't want to ban mopeds from 34th Avenue. They recognize that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/delivery-drivers-e-bikes-mopeds-danger-traffic-crashes-nyc-2024-6">other streets often aren't safe for moped drivers</a>, many of whom are delivery workers.Funding for open streets can be hard to come by, however. Across the city, 83 miles of open streets <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/08/11/nyregion/open-streets-nyc.html">dwindled to about 20 miles between 2020 and 2022</a>. DOT only allots $20,000 a year for 34th Avenue, Burke said, which is just a fraction of the funds needed to operate the open street all year round. The city has also been <a target="_blank" href="https://nyc.streetsblog.org/2024/03/11/chilling-effect-city-slow-to-pay-back-open-streets">slow to reimburse neighborhood groups</a> supporting open streets across the city.Burke estimates 34th Avenue needs at least $50,000 a year to operate with a decent amount of programming — and the City still owes it $10,000 from last year. The more money the street has, the more instructors, artists, and musicians it can pay to lead workshops, beautify the street, and put on performances.Unlike many other open streets across the city, 34th Avenue isn't a commercial street — it's entirely residential in between its many schools and one small park. "A lot of the places that New York City has done these kind of more groundbreaking projects, they've been in wealthy neighborhoods," Dawn Siff, the director of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.paseopark.org/">Alliance for Paseo Park</a>, a nonprofit supporting the open street.Siff and others hope 34th Avenue will become a public park that prioritizes people on foot. She pointed to models in cities like <a target="_blank" href="https://mexicocity.cdmx.gob.mx/venues/parque-lineal-gran-canal/?lang=es">Mexico City</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theguardian.com/travel/2017/jun/07/paris-promenade-plantee-free-elevated-park-walkway-bastille-bois-de-vincennes">Paris</a>. Just across the East River, there's a great model in Manhattan's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nycgovparks.org/parks/the-high-line">High Line</a>.O'Doherty-Naranjo and Burke want to see the open street extended all the way down to the end of 34th Avenue near Citi Field. They all envision a greener street, with flood mitigation like rain gardens — and more public art. How a viral video sparked the theft of hundreds of thousands of carsBria Jenkins was enjoying an evening at home last November, watching television with her kids and waiting for a Domino's delivery. But when she opened the door to grab the pizza from the delivery driver, she got a serious shock: There was broken glass strewn on the ground and her 2013 Kia Optima was gone — stolen from right in front of her house. "I started freaking out. I was like, 'Am I dreaming?'" she told me.Patti Lebeau-Chorn experienced a similar nightmare one morning last August. She had parked her 2015 Kia Sorrento, which her late parents had helped her buy, across the street at a golf-course parking lot while volunteering at her temple in Los Angeles. But when she went to drive home, she couldn't find it anywhere. Lebeau-Chorn and Jenkins are just two victims of an unprecedented surge in car thefts that has swept across US cities in the past two years. In Milwaukee, car thefts <a href="https://www.tmj4.com/news/local-news/milwaukee-common-council-mulls-solutions-to-kia-hyundai-thefts" target="_blank" rel="noopener">have doubled</a> since 2020. In St. Louis, they <a href="https://jasher.substack.com/p/how-tiktok-caused-a-surge-in-auto?utm_source=post-email-title&amp;publication_id=1234332&amp;post_id=98187589&amp;isFreemail=true&amp;utm_medium=email" target="_blank" rel="noopener">spiked</a> 157% from the second half of 2021 to the second half of 2022. Other major metro areas across the country — <a href="https://gothamist.com/news/nyc-auto-thefts-reach-16-year-high-mirroring-nationwide-trend" target="_blank" rel="noopener">New York</a>, <a href="https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/chicago-police-announce-crackdown-on-car-thefts-as-stolen-vehicle-numbers-climb/3053812/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Chicago</a>, and <a href="https://xtown.la/2023/01/30/los-angeles-car-thefts-increase-in-2022/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Los Angeles</a> — have seen similar increases.The cause of this wild car-theft spree? A viral TikTok. The <a href="https://www.insider.com/tiktok-kia-challenge-using-usb-cables-to-steal-cars-2022-7">"Kia Challenge" video</a>, which first appeared in 2021 and regained popularity in July 2022, showed how to easily hijack certain models of Kia and Hyundai vehicles using only a USB cord. While the video was quickly taken down by TikTok each time it resurfaced, the damage was done: 70% of the cars stolen in Milwaukee last year and 50% of the cars stolen in Chicago this year were from the two South Korean manufacturers.The situation has become so critical that two major auto-insurance companies, State Farm and Progressive, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/state-farm-progressive-insurance-policies-kia-hyundai-car-thefts-2023-1">have stopped insuring</a> vulnerable Kia and Hyundai models. And dozens of class-action lawsuits filed around the country are attempting to force the manufacturers to either issue a recall or fix the cars' vulnerability. The trend has become not just a financial burden for consumers and a legal nightmare for Kia and Hyundai, but has spotlighted what happens when a business cuts corners: It's often the people least responsible who bear the burden. <h2>Safety shortcuts</h2>The TikTok video that sparked the challenge — a how-to <a href="https://www.dexerto.com/entertainment/tiktok-kia-challenge-users-warned-not-try-trend-1885947/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reportedly</a> created by user @robbierayyy — exposed a security flaw in Kia models from 2011 to 2021 and Hyundai models from 2015 to 2021. The cars from that time don't have electronic immobilizers, a safety device that uses a unique chip in the key fob. Cars with this tech won't start unless they recognize the correct key, making them far more difficult to hot-wire. Without that system, anyone could unscrew the steering column in the older Kias and Hyundais and insert a USB into the ignition before driving away. The simplicity of this "hack" led to a huge surge in thefts of the cars. While there's no federal database of thefts by specific model, the numbers in large cities are staggering. In <a href="https://www.kuow.org/stories/seattle-sues-kia-and-hyundai-after-rise-in-car-thefts" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Seattle</a>, thefts of Kias and Hyundais increased by 363% and 503%, respectively, between 2021 and 2022. In <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/chicago/news/kia-hyundais-stolen-chicago/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Chicago</a>, 1,000 Kias were stolen in October alone. And in Portland, Oregon, the number of stolen Kias <a href="https://public.tableau.com/app/profile/portlandpolicebureau/viz/MonthlyStolenVehicleStatistics/Dashboard" target="_blank" rel="noopener">increased</a> by 916% from January 2022 to January 2023, while Hyundai thefts jumped by 768%. Both the <a href="https://spdblotter.seattle.gov/2022/08/15/warning-to-kia-drivers-recent-spike-in-thefts-may-be-tied-to-tiktok-videos/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Seattle</a> and <a href="https://twitter.com/LAPDHQ/status/1562953014838640640?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1562953014838640640%7Ctwgr%5Ed9516719e9bcec7bbfb1ce1e5716632a731f9275%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fqz.com%2Fembed%2Finset%2Fiframe%3Fid%3Dtwitter-1562953014838640640autosize%3D1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Los Angeles</a> police departments put out notices tying the trend to the TikTok challenge. In response to the crime wave, Kia <a href="https://www.iihs.org/news/detail/hyundais-kias-are-easy-targets-amid-boom-in-vehicle-thefts#:~:text=Immobilizers%20are%20standard%20on%20all,or%20as%20a%20running%20change." target="_blank" rel="noopener">added</a> immobilizers to their 2022 models, and Hyundai has added them to cars built since November 2021. So far there's been no recall on the already-compromised models, though Kia and Hyundai both noted in statements to Insider that they are providing steering-wheel locks to affected car owners through some police departments — in Kia's case, 23,000 locks to over 120 departments nationwide. But many people have questioned why the companies didn't have such a standard feature in their cars in the first place. In <a href="https://www.iihs.org/news/detail/hyundais-kias-are-easy-targets-amid-boom-in-vehicle-thefts" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2015</a>, 96% of vehicles from other manufacturers had immobilizers, but only 26% of Kia and Hyundai cars did, according to a Highway Loss Data Institute report. While the US does not mandate the tech, electronic immobilizers have been common since the late 1990s, when the European Union <a href="https://www.researchgate.net/publication/256044677_The_Engine_Immobilizer_A_Non-Starter_for_Car_Thieves" target="_blank" rel="noopener">mandated</a> them for all new cars sold there. Neither Kia or Hyundai have explained why their vehicles didn't have this safety feature.Ann Davison, the Seattle city attorney, acknowledged TikTok's role in the theft spree but placed the underlying blame on the car companies themselves. "What really has happened is that Kia and Hyundai chose to cut corners in cost in their least-expensive models in a period of years," she told me. Davison is one of the lawyers who has filed a class-action suit against the manufacturers (one lawyer estimated several dozen such lawsuits existed across the country). The suits were recently consolidated into one case in California, the home of the two manufacturers' American headquarters. Jonathan Michaels, a lawyer at MLG Attorneys at Law in California, who is representing Lebeau-Chorn, said his firm had been watching the situation unfold since the Kia Challenge took off in the middle of last year. "We thought that Kia and Hyundai might take some type of corrective action to prevent further harm," he said, either by issuing a recall of the affected cars or offering compensation to victims. "We were surprised when they didn't." Michaels' complaint alleges that the manufacturers failed to disclose that the cars lacked immobilizers, "thereby misrepresenting the vehicles' safety, ease of theft, and value to consumers." He also argued that the real problem came down to the bottom line. "The reality is these are just very cheaply made cars where every corner is cut to save a nickel," Michaels said.In a statement to Insider, a Kia spokesperson wrote that "potential lawsuits against Kia by municipalities are without merit. All Kia vehicles are subject to and comply fully with rigorous testing rules and regulations outlined in the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards."Both Kia and Hyundai told Insider that in response to the thefts, the companies have introduced a free anti-theft-software upgrade, as Hyundai noted, "to prevent the vehicles from starting during a method of theft popularized on TikTok and other social media." The upgrades are being offered through Hyundai and Kia dealerships, and Hyundai's CEO <a href="https://www.hyundainews.com/en-us/releases/3768" target="_blank" rel="noopener">has said</a> the company is prioritizing the vehicles "most targeted by thieves."<h2>A nightmare for carmakers</h2>The ripple effect of the Kia Challenge could have extreme repercussions for manufacturers — especially since State Farm and Progressive <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/state-farm-progressive-insurance-policies-kia-hyundai-car-thefts-2023-1">decided not to write insurance policies</a> for the vulnerable models in some cities. According to Mark Friedlander, the director of corporate communications for the Insurance Information Institute, it's a significant move. "They're taking unique steps we've never seen before," he told me, adding that Kia and Hyundai "need to do much more to resolve the issue."And it's not just insurance that's becoming a problem. Andrea Amico, the founder and CEO of Privacy4Cars, a company that addresses automotive data-privacy issues, told me other companies are taking steps to avoid risk. "There are garages that are refusing to have these vehicles in their garage because they're concerned about the liability if the car is stolen," Amico said. "And if you cannot insure your car and cannot park, this has an immediate impact on what the asset is worth." Luckily for Kia and Hyundai owners, the still-pervasive shortfall of vehicles for sale means <a href="https://www.nbc4i.com/news/investigates/better-call-4/better-call-4-does-security-flaw-affect-resale-value-of-hyundais-kias/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the value of the cars hasn't dropped</a> too much despite the theft problem. But that could change. Moving forward, manufacturers will likely need to think about how quickly a viral video can expose product flaws, Venkatesh Prasad, the senior vice president for research at the Center for Automotive Research, told me. "The question is what do you do about that exposure," he said. Prasad said that consumers expect companies to immediately issue fixes like hardware or software upgrades, but these Band-Aid solutions could mean that break-ins will become more sophisticated, because unlike producers of security systems, perpetrators have more free time and share their tricks on social media. "It's a cat-and-a-mouse problem," he said.Long-term risks or repercussions for the companies, if any, will likely hinge on the outcomes of the lawsuits. In the end, the real brunt of this problem won't fall on giant, global car manufacturers but on the people who are having their lives disrupted.<h2>'Kia Boys back at it'</h2>Five days after her car was stolen, Lebeau-Chorn received a call from a police officer that it had been found. A friend drove her to a tow yard, where she found her car in a sorry state. The door handles had been spray-painted black and the wires from under the hood and the steering wheel had been ripped out, she told me. Clothes she had planned to donate were strewn around the car, the license plates were missing, and the glove compartment was flung open. Her insurance company declared that her car was totaled. "It was a horrible time for me," she said.According to police <a href="https://public.tableau.com/app/profile/portlandpolicebureau/viz/MonthlyStolenVehicleStatistics/Dashboard" target="_blank" rel="noopener">data</a> and other <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2022/09/08/tiktok-challenge-spurs-rise-in-thefts-of-kia-hyundai-cars.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reports</a>, most of the stolen vehicles have been recovered — the cars largely intact, but trashed. After Jenkins' car was stolen, a tracker in her car led the police to where it was left, 14 minutes from her house. In order to haul the car back home, she had to use the same tactics employed by the thieves: cracking open the steering column and using her own USB cord to start it. Fortunately, the only real damage was a broken window, but she couldn't find a replacement in Atlanta and ended up driving five hours to get it fixed. The culprits behind the thefts often <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@vesterp1/video/7161916100882615594?_t=8aJuQNhk9Ta&amp;_r=1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">refer to themselves</a> on TikTok as "Kia Boys." (In a <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20220725152436/https://www.tiktok.com/@robbierayyy/video/7119588490127363370?_t=8UHLzoAg8TG&amp;_r=1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">screenshot</a> of what appears to be the original video, @robbierayyy used the hashtag #kiaboyz.) The joyriding has resulted in a couple fatal accidents. In October, four teens between 14 and 17 were <a href="https://www.kgns.tv/2022/10/25/4-teens-killed-crash-possibly-linked-tiktok-car-theft-challenge-sheriff-says/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">killed</a> in Buffalo, New York, after a stolen Kia they were riding in crashed. And while there are plenty of videos of joyriders, there are also dozens of viral videos from people documenting their experiences recovering stolen cars. In one, the user <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@mrsmillionaire/video/7191925968213151018" target="_blank" rel="noopener">@mrsmillionaire</a> went inside her Kia to find the USB still dangling from the ignition. "That is a phone charger y'all," she says. In another, <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@lina.bakman/video/7161609760759090478" target="_blank" rel="noopener">@lina.bakman</a> filmed the aftermath of what seemed like a theft attempt, showing her backseat full of broken glass and the steering column busted open, with a caption on the video that read "good try Kia boys."For the most part, though, the trend has been more of a financial burden for consumers. Jenkins said the car theft cost her about $400, money she had set aside for a special trip for her daughter's 13th birthday to the Mall of America's Nickelodeon Universe theme park in Minnesota. They weren't able to go."I'm pissed," she told me.Even though the original video was taken down, the hack is now out there, and the thefts haven't shown any signs of slowing down. After Lebeau-Chorn's Kia was stolen, she had no choice but to rent a car while she shopped for a new one. Her insurance company gave her $16,000 for the totaled car, but the additional financial strain was still a burden. After months of careful consideration, she chose a 2022 Subaru Forester. In 2018, Seth Rogen tweeted that he thought "Angels with Filthy Souls" was real during his entire childhood.Chris Evans retweeted Rogen's admission, saying: "IT'S NOT????"During a wide-ranging interview that celebrated the 30th anniversary of "Home Alone," Columbus <a href="https://www.insider.com/home-alone-30-anniversary-chris-columbus-trump-cameo-2020-11">told Insider</a> that he had heard about Rogen and Evans thinking "Angels with Filthy Souls" is real. And he has a theory on why it's tricked so many moviewatchers."'Home Alone' is one of the last films shot with an old <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arc_lamp#Carbon-arc_lighting_in_the_U.S.">carbon-arc lighting system</a> that was popular back in the 1940s through 1960s for Technicolor films," the director explained. "That means you have to put a carbon piece of charcoal into each lamp and it creates a warmer and richer light to shoot."Columbus said the movie's cinematographer, Julia Macat, insisted on doing the lighting this way for the entire film. The result is that "Home Alone" has a warm and rich look, perfect for a holiday movie — and when you're trying to imitate the look and feel of an old movie."We also shot the 'Angels with Filthy Souls' scene the same way," Columbus said.
