Counting of postal votes begins in Kerala, "Congress-led UDF" leads

The 64-year-old K.K. <keyword id="4890" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shailaja">Shailaja</keyword>, on Sunday created history by going forward to secure the <keyword id="2224199" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="highest-margin">highest margin</keyword> of victory in an assembly election when her margin crossed 60,000 votes. The final tally is yet to come as counting of votes has entered the last round at the <keyword id="1964291" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mattanur">Mattanur</keyword> assembly constituency in Kannur district. The ruling Left led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is on course to create history by becoming the first government to retain power and the latest is they are leading in 100 seats out of the 140 seats in the <keyword id="124963" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kerala-assembly">Kerala Assembly</keyword>. Kerala minister Shailaja makes history by crossing the margin of 60,000 votes

The opposition members in the Kerala Assembly boycotted Governor Arif Mohammad Khan's '<keyword id="8681016" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="policy-address">policy address</keyword>' and walked out on Friday, the first day of the Budget session, and later sat on a 'dharna' at the Assembly's entry gate. While the Governor was addressing the House, the opposition raised slogans against Speaker P Sreeramakrishnan and Chief Minister <keyword id="6356705" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="pinarayi-vijayan">Pinarayi Vijayan</keyword>. The Governor tried to pacify the opposition MLAs thrice and urged them to allow him to fulfil his constitutional responsibility of delivering the policy address. However, the MLAs of the United Democratic Front led by the Congress walked out of the House, except lone BJP MLA O Rajagopal who remain seated throughout the Governor's speech. Leader of Opposition <keyword id="72604" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ramesh-Chennithala">Ramesh Chennithala</keyword> told the media outside the Assembly: "We are performing the opposition's duty. It is our responsibility towards the public. Speaker Sreeramakrishnan has put a blot on the House by interfering with a central agency's work. We cannot just sit and watch." In his address that went on for two hours and 10 minutes, Khan read out the <keyword id="170730" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="LDF-Government">LDF government</keyword>'s policy against the three <keyword id="10490441" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="new-central-farm-laws">new central farm laws</keyword>, maintaining that the "farm laws are for the corporates and a consumer state like Kerala will have to bear their brunt". There were reports that the Governor may not read out the policy address to criticise the farm laws but that did not happen. The Governor said that the state had worked over time during coronavirus pandemic and that the government had delivered free kits to each and every household during this period. He also said that the Pinarayi Vijayan-led Left Democratic Front government will provide title deeds to 20,000 landless persons in the southern state. A scathing attack on central agencies was made in the state's policy statement, with the Governor maintaining that the actions of these agencies had resulted in a "demoralising effect on honest and hardworking officers". He also claimed that it had led to impediments in the implementation of the flagship projects of the Vijayan government. TMC and BJP locked in neck-and-neck tussle in West Bengal as counting of votes began

The opposition Congress-led <keyword id="204591" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="United-Democratic-Front">United Democratic Front</keyword> (UDF) Monday moved a no-confidence motion against the Pinarayi Vijayan-led Left government in Kerala, raising a slew of allegations including the <keyword id="1888344" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="gold-smuggling-case">gold smuggling case</keyword>. Congress legislator V D Satheeshan moved the motion, saying the Chief Minister's office was "hijacked" by the gold smuggling gang. "While the Chief Minister was attending the press conference and saying that everything was fine with the government and was ready to face any probe, his former principal secretary was being questioned by investigating agenciesfor hours," Satheeshan said. He said the ministers and the chief minister were trying to "put all the blame in the gold smuggling matter on the shoulders of suspended senior IAS officer and former IT Secretary M Sivashankar". The state government has been facing severe criticism from the opposition Congress and the BJP, who alleged links of the gold smuggling case accused with the Chief Minister's Office. The state government had earlier suspended Sivashankar, for his alleged links with Swapna Suresh, a key accused in the gold smuggling case involving diplomatic baggage addressed to the UAE consulate here. The Speaker P Sreeramakrishnan has allotted five hours for the discussion on the no-confidence motion, the first against the four-year-old <keyword id="6356705" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="pinarayi-vijayan">Pinarayi Vijayan</keyword> government. Adhering to strict COVID-19 protocols, the Kerala Assembly convened for a day on Monday and passed the Finance Bill 2020-21, which could not be passed after the state budget in February as the House was adjourned sine die on March 13 due to the coronavirus scare. The opposition has been attacking the government on various issues, including the gold smuggling case and Life Mission housing project for the poor since the past few days. In the 140-member house, LDF has 91 members and UDF 45. A no-confidence motion against the government is being brought after 15 years. In 2005, then CPI(M) MLA Kodiyeri Balakrishnan had moved a motion alleging corruption against the Oommen Chandy government. However, the UDF, is in aquagmire as the Jose K Mani faction of its ally Kerala Congress has decided to stay away from the motion owing to a factional feud. The Kerala Congress party has five members, three belonging to party chairman P J Joseph and two of Jose Mani faction. P C George, an independent member, has said he will vote for the motion. BJP has one member-- O Rajagopal. The by-election to the Rajya Sabha seat which fell vacant after the death of sitting member 83-year-old M P Veerendra Kumar, a media baron and veteran socialist, on May 28, is progressing in the Assembly today. The session was to have been held on July 27, but was postponed due to the COVID-19 situation. A medical team conducted rapid antigen tests on the members early in the morning and social distancing in seating arrangements have also been ensured. However, visitors were not allowed for the session. Each member will have a separate seat for the session, and provided with a sanitiser, mask and a pair of gloves and those entering the assembly complex were subjected to thermal scanning.
