"We are all proud of his tenacious ambition and the daring he has shown throughout his life."</p><p>"Italian by birth, Pierre Cardin never forgot his origins while bringing unconditional love to France," the statement continued. </p><p>France's Fine Arts Academy, of which Cardin was a member since 1992, also shared the news. </p><p>"The Perpetual Secretary, Laurent Petitgirard, and the members of the Academy of Fine Arts are very sad to announce the death of their colleague Pierre Cardin," a spokesperson for the organization said in a statement cited by <a href="https://www.express.co.uk/celebrity-news/1377678/Pierre-Cardin-dead-How-did-Pierre-Cardin-die-Cause-of-death-latest-evg">the Express</a>.</p><p>The cause of his death is not yet known, according to the Express.</p><h2>Pierre Cardin launched his fashion career in the 1940s and became known for his futuristic Space Age designs</h2><p>Cardin was born in 1922 near Venice, Italy, according to <a href="https://pierrecardin.com/designer">a timeline of the designer's life on his official website</a>, and his family emigrated to Saint-Etienne, France, when he was 2.</p><p>He began his career in fashion when he moved to Paris in 1945, working for Paquin and Schiaparelli before being hired as a tailor by Christian Dior in 1946.</p><p>In 1950, Cardin launched his own company, initially designing theater costumes, before he went on to create the <a href="https://pierrecardin.com/designer">"bubble dress"</a> in 1954. A decade later, the designer debuted his distinctive Space Age collection, a line of futurist designs that made a statement in the fashion world.</p><div type="image" title="Space age outfits" height="2703" width="2000" msid="80013975" hostid="261"></div><p>Over the course of his more than 70-year career, Cardin was a pioneer in his field.</p><p>As <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-55476062">the BBC points out</a>, the designer was one of the first to launch ready-to-wear collections, making high fashion more accessible to the general public. Over the years, Cardin also launched a range of products bearing his name, including fragrances, creating what AFP calls "the first truly global fashion empire."</p><p>After news of his death broke, Cardin's official Instagram account shared <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CJYh3NSAM5E/?utm_source=ig_embed">a photo with a quote from the  late designer</a>: "I have always worked in my own <keyword id="7" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="style">style</keyword>, which is different from all others. It was always my intention to be different, because that is the only way to last."</p><p>Representatives for Pierre Cardin did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment. </p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Power shoulders are back in fashion for fall and winter.</li><li>Stylist Liz Teich told Business Insider that her clients have difficulty wearing the storied trend.</li></ul><p><a target="_blank" href="https://thenewyorkstylist.com/">Liz Teich</a>, a New York-based fashion stylist, told Business Insider that her clients have been buying outfits that give them "power shoulders," but aren't quite sure how to style them.</p><p>The exaggerated shoulder has continued to creep back into mainstream fashion every few seasons or so, and the trend is back again this <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/gen-z-fall-fashion-trends-2023-9">fall</a> and winter, according to <a target="_blank" href="https://wwd.com/fashion-news/fashion-trends/fall-2023-fashion-trend-big-shoulders-pads-take-up-space-women-1235601199/">Women's Wear Daily</a>.</p><p>Teich told BI she credits the current rise of the power shoulder — and, more broadly, "power dressing" — to the return of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/guides/style/where-to-shop-for-womens-workwear-clothes">in-person work</a>.</p><p>"We are back at work, a lot of people are going back to the office, and they want to be seen and taken seriously," she said.</p><p>Power dressing, Teich said, is feeling like you can take on the world just by changing what you wear.</p><p>"It's really psychological the way that putting on a great outfit can change your day, your outlook, your productivity," she added.</p><h2><strong>The '80s are making a comeback again</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Pierre Cardin wearing a suit with prominent upwards sloping shoulders" height="3324" width="2255" msid="106163783" hostid="261" sizebytes="612186"></div><p>It's impossible to talk about power shoulders and not circle back to the 1980s.</p><p>Summer Anne Lee, Adjunct Faculty at the Fashion Institute of Technology and Underpinnings Museum committee member, told BI the precursor to the '80s shoulder was in the '70s with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/pierre-cardin-designer-has-died-age-98-2020-12">Pierre Cardin's</a> Chinese pagoda-inspired upwards sloping shoulders.</p><p>Though the trend didn't take off, it likely had some influence on the popularity of shoulder pads in the '80s, which Lee described as being "the real power-shoulder moment."</p><p>"Shoulder pads for women were in everything. They were in workout clothes. They were in pajamas, and T-shirts — everything," Lee told BI.</p><p>Similar to today, women in the '80s were showing up in a traditionally masculine working space, "particularly if you were in a situation in the '80s, where you were maybe the only woman in the room," Lee added. </p><h2><strong>The prominence of power dressing in history</strong></h2><p>Further back, during the Renaissance period in the mid-16th century in Europe, Lee said this is when the power shoulder began to first take hold.</p><p>"Advancements and tailoring start to be able to give the wealthy and the elite classes the ability to change the shapes of their body," she said.</p><p>The introduction of corsets, and farthingale, the hoop skirt worn by Queen Elizabeth I, were ways for wealthier classes in these societies to differentiate themselves.</p><p>Lee told BI there's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-nottinghamshire-63454452">even evidence</a> that Queen Elizabeth I had structural support within some of her sleeves to create her signature puff shoulder silhouette — an expensive, royal version of the padded shoulders we have today.</p><h2><strong>Styling a power shoulder is about balance</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Sydney Sweeney wearing a black coat and wide leg jeans, a model on the Saint Laurent Menswear Fall-Winter 2023-2024 runway wearing a long striped coat and pants" height="1080" width="1440" msid="106163784" hostid="261" sizebytes="96196"></div><p>Teich said some of her clients steer away from the power shoulder because they believe they already have overly broad shoulders.</p><p>She recommends they take the shoulder pads out if they want to tone the silhouette down, but that an exaggerated shoulder can hide this feature if you're self-conscious like it famously did for Joan Crawford in the movie "Letty Lynton" back in the '30s (her <a target="_blank" href="https://www.mdhistory.org/the-letty-lynton-effect/">puffy-sleeved dress</a> became so popular that it started a fashion movement).</p><p>To keep today's look balanced and modern, Teich recommended steering away from a fitted bottom which would exaggerate the "inverted triangle shape."</p><p>She said to opt for wide-leg pants to balance the outfit.</p><p>Teich told BI this trend isn't only for people working in the corporate world. Blazers over loungewear can make anyone look put-together, she said.</p><p>"People can just throw on a really great blazer and feel like they can take on the world," Teich added. </p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>One of France's highest-ranking church officials said he abused a 14-year-old girl 35 years ago.</li><li>Jean-Pierre Ricard <strong>is now withdrawing from his religious duties.</strong></li></ul><p>Cardinal Jean-Pierre Ricard, one of the highest-ranking church officials in France, has admitted that he abused a 14-year-old girl 35 years ago, Archbishop of Reims Eric de Moulins-Beaufort said at the Bishops' Conference of France on Monday, per <a href="https://apnews.com/article/europe-religion-france-sexual-abuse-by-clergy-21d06cd1ede1a2b81eabd92e9b1e12a5">AP</a>.</p><p>The admission came in a written statement from Ricard, which Moulins-Beaufort read to those in attendance.</p><p>"Thirty-five years ago, when I was a priest, I behaved in a reprehensible way with a young girl aged 14," Ricard, now 78, said in the statement. "My behavior has inevitably caused serious and lasting consequences for this person."</p><p>Ricard said that he asked the victim and her family for forgiveness and that he was going on a retreat to pray, the <a href="https://catholicnews.com/french-cardinal-admits-to-abusing-teen-girl-35-years-ago/">Catholic News Service</a> reported, citing the written statement.</p><p>"This is a difficult process. But what comes first is the suffering experienced by the victims and the recognition of the acts committed," Ricard said, per the Catholic News Service. </p><p>Ricard was ordained as a priest in October 1968 and held different posts in the Catholic Church before he was appointed as Archbishop of Bordeaux in December 2001, per the <a href="https://press.vatican.va/content/salastampa/en/documentation/cardinali_biografie/cardinali_bio_ricard_jp.html">Vatican website</a>.</p><p>He was proclaimed a cardinal by Pope Benedict XVI in 2006 and served as the president of the Bishops' Conference of France from 2001 to 2007.</p><p>Being a cardinal is a position that's usually held for life, and as a collective, they form the College of Cardinals — which is <a href="https://www.usccb.org/offices/general-secretariat/how-new-pope-chosen">primarily responsible for electing a new pope</a>.</p><p>Ricard is among the 11 former and serving French bishops who have been accused of sexual abuse, Moulins-Beaufort said at the conference, adding that all of them will be prosecuted or face church disciplinary procedures, per <a href="https://www.france24.com/en/france/20221107-eleven-french-bishops-accused-of-sexual-violence">AFP</a>.</p><p>A year ago, an <a href="https://www.ciase.fr/">independent commission</a> headed by Jean-Marc Sauvé, the president of the French Independent Committee on Sexual Abuse in the Catholic Church, found that an estimated 330,000 children in France were sexually abused by various members of the Catholic Church between 1950 and 2020.</p><p>The commission urged the Church to "establish a procedure for the recognition of abuse" and "provide compensation for the harm suffered," per <a href="https://www.ciase.fr/medias/Ciase-Summary-of-the-Final-Report-5-october-2021.pdf">the 2021 report</a>.</p><p>The Independent National Authority for Recognition and Reparation — the institution responsible for compensation decisions — announced at a news conference in September that the French Catholic Church has started paying out compensation to victims, per <a href="https://apnews.com/article/religion-france-sexual-abuse-by-clergy-764cf244efc9898886dbcfdbc5f1602d">AP.</a></p>

The moves may reveal a clarity about how the top of the draft could play out.</p><p>Many in the NFL world believe Jets' big move into the top three was to <a href="https://www.si.com/nfl/2018/03/17/new-york-jets-trade-indianapolis-colts-third-pick-sam-darnold-josh-rosen-baker-mayfield-josh-allen">ensure they get one of the top quarterbacks in the draft</a>. It's unclear who, exactly, the Jets may target, but this year's draft class is considered loaded, with prospects like Josh Allen, Sam Darnold, and Josh Rosen headlining the class. The Jets haven't found a long-term answer at quarterback in years, and the short-term deals for veterans like Josh McCown and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/teddy-bridgewater-brutal-contract-jets-2018-3">Teddy Bridgewater</a> suggest the Jets will try to look for a QB at No. 3.</p><p>The Giants, meanwhile, have been something of a blank slate, with needs at several positions. Some have thought the Giants could look for a replacement for Eli Manning by taking a quarterback, or could take running back Saquon Barkley, who <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/saquon-barkley-combine-numbers-freakish-2018-3">impressed at the combine</a>. </p><p>But the Giants' trade on Thursday suggests they may go after defensive end Bradley Chubb, considered one of the best and safest picks in this year's draft. Trading Pierre-Paul opens up a spot on their defensive line.</p><p>These moves could shape how the Browns draft with the first and fourth picks. There was some debate about whether the Browns could take Barkley at No. 1 and then draft a quarterback at No. 4. But with the Jets breathing down their necks, and the general unknown of the Giants' plans, the Browns may have to take a quarterback sooner rather than later.</p><p>That urgency may double if the Giants trade the second overall pick. There's no indication that they will, but there have been murmurs that teams like the <a href="https://www.buffalorumblings.com/2018/3/19/17139770/buffalo-bills-trade-up-first-pick-dont-know-who-they-want-2018-nfl-draft-brandon-beane">Buffalo Bills</a> or <a href="http://www.sports360az.com/2018/03/cards-trade-rumors-swirling-qb-heavy-draft/">Arizona Cardinals</a> may trade up to try to get a quarterback. The Giants, with needs at several positions, could potentially acquire multiple picks to fill those holes. If a quarterback-needy team moves into the second spot, the Browns would have even less wiggle room when it comes to drafting a quarterback.</p><p>This year's draft order seems hazier than normal, but already we're seeing possible plans take shape. Two big NFL trades may have given us our clearest look yet at how the top of the draft will play out

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="50996" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Saudi-Arabia">Saudi Arabia</keyword>, the home of Islam, has outlawed churches and punished Christian worship for decades.</li><li>The kingdom's 1.4 million Christians meet in secret, but authorities are signaling more openness.</li><li>This is the inside story of the American mission to woo MBS to build the kingdom's first church.</li></ul><p>On a sunny, cloudless October morning in 2019, twenty-five American Christians gathered at the base of Jabal al-Lawz, an umber-colored mountain in northwest Saudi Arabia. </p><p>Their leader, the evangelical author and preacher Joel Richardson, took out a Bible he'd brought from back home in Kansas, and started to read out loud.</p><p>Soon after, he and his congregation began singing hymns, while their hired Saudi tour guides pulled out their smartphones, and started to film.</p><p>Richardson was leading the first-ever Christian tour to Saudi Arabia, the home of Islam where the public practice of any other religion is famously forbidden.</p><p>Still, the preacher was taken aback when his phone rang that evening. It was the State Department with a message: "Be careful."</p><p>Richardson is to this day bemused. "I guess some of the videos went viral on Saudi social media or something," he told Insider in a recent interview.</p><h2>Saudi Arabia is liberalizing, but Christians still worship underground </h2><p>The scene at Jabal al-Lawz, which some Christians believe to be the true location of Mount Sinai, illustrates the rapid social change underway in Saudi Arabia, as well as the dangers that still face the <a href="http://www.globalreligiousfutures.org/countries/saudi-arabia#/?affiliations_religion_id=11&amp;affiliations_year=2020&amp;region_name=All%20Countries&amp;restrictions_year=2016ns_year=2016">1.4 million Christians</a> living there. </p><p>In the past decade, those caught in the act of worship have been punished, arrested, jailed, or deported, and the sight of Christians brandishing Bibles and singing hymns in broad daylight would have riled many devout Muslims.</p><p>In 2014, the kingdom's religious police deported 12 Ethiopian Christians caught worshipping in Dammam in February, and raided a home in September after hearing it was used for church services, <a href="https://www.refworld.org/topic,50ffbce40,50ffbce469,562105556,0,,,SAU.html">the State Department said</a>. In 2011, 35 Christians were arrested at a private gathering in Jeddah, <a href="https://www.hrw.org/news/2012/01/30/saudi-arabia-christians-arrested-private-prayer">Human Rights Watch reported</a>, adding that 29 women among them were "subjected to arbitrary body cavity searches."</p><p>Saudi Arabia's millennial crown prince, <keyword id="2750192" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Mohammed-bin-Salman">Mohammed bin Salman</keyword> - known also by his initials, MBS - has reformed his country since taking power in 2017. Yet advances in religious freedom have come slowly, clearly posing a more existential issue for the crown prince to tackle than <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/female-solo-traveler-went-to-saudi-arabia-heres-what-i-saw">mass tourism</a>, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/saudi-arabia-censors-black-pather-first-movie-in-35-years-2018-4">Hollywood blockbusters</a>, or <a href="https://www.insider.com/influencers-criticized-for-saudi-arabian-music-festival-trips-2019-12">music festivals</a>.</p><div type="image" title="Saudi and foreign media representatives listen to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman remotely addressing a press conference, at the G20 summit's Media Center in the capital Riyadh, on November 22, 2020. "We choose to lay low in respect to their <keyword id="24504" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="culture">culture</keyword> and religion." The person requested anonymity over fears for her safety, but her identity is known to Insider.</p><p>As more non-Muslim expats arrive for work, the kingdom has increasingly turned a blind eye to their faith - <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-saudi-police-idUSKCN0XA24Y">neutering the religious police</a> in 2016 - while maintaining that Bible preaching or proselytizing Muslims is unacceptable.</p><p>But MBS has also enforced a near-total silencing of opposition to his rule, comprising <a href="https://www.insider.com/princess-basmah-saudi-arabia-humanitarian-prisoner-mystery-kidnap-mbs-2020-5">arbitrary detentions</a>, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bezos-saudi-hack-report-boycott-amazon-trending-social-media-2020-1">bot armies</a>, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/saudi-arabia-mbs-lawsuit-denies-ordering-hit-squad-claims-immunity-2020-12">alleged assassinations</a>, <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-murder-of-jamal-khashoggi-2019-10">alleged murder</a>, and widespread efforts to spy on or hack <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/twitter-saudi-dissident-suing-breach-whistleblower-deaths-ali-al-ahmed-2020-8">opponents at home</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/saudi-hack-jeff-bezos-phone-mohammed-bin-salman-months-gigabytes-2020-1">abroad</a>.</p><p>The State Department's warning to Richardson was clear: As a Christian in Saudi Arabia, tread carefully.</p><h2>A yearslong courtship</h2><p>The US government has for years asked Saudi Arabia to end the ban on churches, with little success.</p><p>"I have gone there and talked to top leaders about opening up a church for these people and they have always said, 'Saudi Arabia is different and it is the land of the two holiest shrines of Islam,'" Nina Shea, a former US Commissioner on International Religious Freedom, told Insider. "The whole country is a shrine, in a sense, and therefore they cannot have a church built."</p><p>David Rundell, a former chief of mission at the US Embassy in Riyadh, added: "It's something that we have spoken to the Saudis about on numerous occasions." </p><p>Since MBS's ascension, a group of US evangelical heavyweights have taken the baton. In October 2018, Joel Rosenberg, one of America's prominent evangelical authors, accepted an invitation from the prince to meet him in Riyadh.</p><p>With Rosenberg came the Rev. Johnnie Moore, a religious advisor to President Donald Trump, and a string of other <a href="https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/televangelist">televangelists</a>. (Trump's 2016 victory was largely thanks to evangelical support, and top officials like Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who is an evangelical, have close ties to Rosenberg.)</p><p>It was the first time a group of American evangelicals had entered a Saudi royal court in 300 years and, in a two-hour meeting conducted off the record, MBS "discussed virtually every controversial issue," <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/opinion/joel-rosenberg-saudi-arabia-and-iran">Rosenberg later wrote for Fox News</a>, without specifying.</p><p>Rosenberg said he also asked MBS when he would let a church be built.</p><p>"Not now," MBS replied, as <a href="https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=526252704506858">Rosenberg later told Israel's i24News</a>. "This would be a gift to al-Qaeda," the prince added, referencing the fact that the terrorist group has often <a href="https://edition.cnn.com/2015/04/24/world/terrorists-attacks-on-christianity/index.html">targeted Christians</a> and <a href="https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2010/11/2/al-qaeda-claims-iraq-church-attack">churches</a>.</p><div type="image" title="A delegation of US evangelicals meeting with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (R) in Riyadh on September 10, 2018.." height="650" width="1300" msid="80749480" hostid="261"></div><p>As Saudi Arabia's leaders, Crown Prince Mohammed and his father King Salman are tasked with defending Islam, and the feasibility of a church on their land concerns a disputed saying of the Prophet Muhammad: That no two religions should exist on the Arabian peninsula. </p><p>Some clerics have argued that the rule only applies to the holy cities of Mecca and Medina. According to Rosenberg, MBS also told the 2018 meeting he had "asked my scholars" to define the Arabian peninsula.</p><p>Not deterred, Rosenberg and his group returned to Saudi Arabia in 2019, and left once again with evidence that change was afoot. The delegation was briefed about the historic existence of churches on the peninsula, Moore told Insider recently, adding: "It is a very significant thing - open conversations about archaeological evidence of churches that existed at the time of the Prophet."</p><p>There, MBS also acknowledged that the Prophet had "lived peacefully among Jews and Christian monks," wrote attendee Skip Heitzig, the senior pastor of Calvary of Albuquerque, in a subsequent <a href="https://www.assistnews.net/an-evangelical-pastor-and-a-saudi-crown-prince/?fbclid=IwAR2W5mxHqNhc1GTK8bfeGlE4ASsWMhI-AoVhJVuFg3NMzpMxYLOdRFj6mvQ">blog post</a>.</p><p>The delegation was set to visit MBS once again in 2020, but the pandemic put an end to those plans, a representative for Rosenberg told Insider, adding that a 2021 trip may be derailed for the same reason. </p><p>Despite the hurdles, the group have kept steady pressure on Saudi officials. On September 28, 2020, Rosenberg and seven other evangelicals from the 2018 and 2019 trips traveled to McLean, Virginia, to dine at the home of Princess Reema bint Bandar al-Saud, the Saudi ambassador to the US, the representative said.</p><p>The Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia in Washington, DC, did not respond to Insider's request for comment for this article.</p><h2>A possible location</h2><p>Though efforts to secure a church in Saudi Arabia have seemed fruitless to date, experts say it is a matter of when, not if.</p><p>"Definitely, I think it's coming," Prince Abdullah bin Khaled al-Saud, a Saudi academic, told Insider. "Especially in the diplomatic quarter in Riyadh or <keyword id="5920297" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="NEOM">Neom</keyword>."</p><p>Neom is a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/neom-what-we-know-saudi-arabia-500bn-mega-city-2019-9">$500 million, carbon-neutral, 10,230-square-mile</a> megacity due to be completed in 2025, and MBS's pet project. Promotional brochures shared with Insider show Neom would have a diverse population "from a mix of homelands, religions and backgrounds," and a "progressive law compatible with international norms." </p><div type="image" title="NEOM Saudi" height="960" width="1920" msid="80749481" hostid="261"></div><p>Ali Shihabi, a member of Neom's advisory board, told Insider: "The issue has been mentioned for Neom," adding that a church was "certainly on the to-do list of the leadership."</p><p>Rundell, the former diplomat in Riyadh, told Insider that Neom is a feasible location for the first church due to the unique nature of the legal system. "Neom is creeping toward being a non-Saudi entity in many regards," he said.</p><p>However, others think placing a church in Neom will be meaningless.</p><p>"It's going to be a PR stunt," Ali al-Ahmed, a Saudi analyst, told Insider. "You need to have one where most of the Christians living in the big cities are: Jeddah, Riyadh."</p><p>Shea, the former US commissioner on religious freedom, said that while most Christians living in those cities would find little use for a church hundreds of miles away, "it would be helpful to have a symbol of tolerance ... that isn't a mosque in Neom."</p><p>"It's something."</p><p>While Neom is believed to be the leading contender for the first Saudi church, Shihabi said the diplomatic quarter in Riyadh is another likely setting. "That allows an element of 'diplomatic cover' for public consumption," he said.</p><p>For religious leaders like the Catholic bishop Paul Hinter, whom Pope Francis appointed last May as Apostolic Administrator for the Northern Vicariate of Arabia, it is important that the flock in Saudi Arabia have a church that they can actually access. </p><p>"My wish is that such churches or worship places be located where the expat workers and employees are living," he told Insider, "and not only in the future showcase city or cities."</p><p>Rosenberg has not publicly commented on the feasibility of a church in Neom. Each Christian denomination has its own house of worship, and the ultimate goal is for each to have their own church in Saudi Arabia.</p><p>In 2008, Catholic Archbishop Paul-Mounged el-Hashem <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2008/mar/18/religion.saudiarabia">told The Guardian that</a> "discussions are under way" about building a church. And in 1973, Pope Paul VI sanctioned the building of the first Saudi-funded mosque in Rome, believing a reciprocal gesture would come from the kingdom. It did not.</p><p>In Washington, the necessity for securing a church in Saudi Arabia has gone in and out of fashion as different administrations passed through the White House. "It was quite an important issue during the Bush administration because they had a strong domestic constituency amongst religious conservatives," Rundell said, adding the issue was also important to the Trump administration.</p><p>President Joe Biden's plans are less clear. <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/think/opinion/why-trump-still-ignoring-saudi-arabia-s-brutal-human-rights-ncna989806">Unlike his predecessor</a>, he has promised to hold Saudi Arabia accountable for its actions, vowing <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/biden-reviews-us-saudi-relations-pressure-rises-remake/story?id=75475490">during his election campaign</a> to make the kingdom "the pariah that they are." Bandar Algaloud/Courtesy of Saudi Royal Court/Handout via REUTERS ATTENTION EDITORS - THIS PICTURE WAS PROVIDED BY A THIRD PARTY." height="928" width="1856" msid="80749485" hostid="261"></div><p>MBS has shown greater willingness to embrace different religions, having already met with Maronite Patriarch Bechara Boutros al-Rai, Coptic Bishop Ava Morkos, Catholic Cardinal Jean-Louis Pierre Tauran, and the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby.</p><p>But before MBS, religious authorities in the Middle East had little success in engaging their Saudi counterparts on the issue.</p><p>Bishop Paul Hinder, who as a Catholic envoy in the region visited Saudi Arabia every year from 2004 to 2011, told Insider it was "almost impossible to get in touch with civil or/and religious authorities" at the time.</p><p>The kingdom is now showing willing, Hinder said, though adding that the reality for Christians remains "far from being 'normal.'" </p><p>Moore added: "I personally believe religious freedom is possible in Saudi Arabia and I didn't believe that before."</p><h2>MBS will make the call, but some will object</h2><p>If MBS ends the ban on churches, it will not go unopposed.</p><p>"Is there going to be a pushback? I definitely think there will be," Prince Abdullah, the academic, told Insider. "[But] are they going to be violent? I doubt that because of the efficiency and strength of the security apparatus in the kingdom."</p><p>One opponent is Sheikh Assim al-Hakeem, a leading Saudi cleric. "Do you see any mosques in the Vatican? No. Likewise, we are not allowed to have any churches," he told <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=85qkjxrRoAA">his YouTube channel</a>.</p><p>"These lands are holy lands."</p><h2>A labor of love</h2><p>Christian tours to Saudi Arabia, like Richardson's in October 2019, are growing in popularity as the kingdom becomes more tolerant. Living Passages, a leading Christian tour company, is already offering <a href="https://livingpassages.com/christian-tours/saudi-arabia/">four trips in 2021</a>, while others are <a href="https://discoveredsinai.com/trip/midian-tour-arabia/">seizing the moment.</a></p><p>"This could be one of the top [Christian] tourist sites in the world, especially in the northwest where they're trying to develop the Neom project," said Ryan Mauro, who leads Christian tours to Saudi Arabia. </p><p>A church is coming for Saudi Arabia, experts are sure, but the timeline is unclear. Even Rosenberg, who spent hours pressing MBS on religious freedom, is hopeful but not holding his breath.</p><p>"The crown prince's plan, after all, is Vision 2030, not Vision 2020," <a href="https://english.alarabiya.net/en/views/news/middle-east/2019/09/19/We-visited-Saudi-Arabia-on-the-eve-of-9-11-the-Kingdom-is-changing-for-good">he wrote</a> after his 2019 visit. </p><p>For the Christian community, the quest for a church is a labor of love.</p><p>"I should be happy on the day when the hundreds of thousands of Catholics living in Saudi Arabia will have their churches and the possibility to gather and pray in freedom," Bishop Hinder said.</p>

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Win-Win</span></p><p class="caption">Michael Tauiliili-Brown, founder CEO of Win-Win</p></div><p></p></div></div>Mike Brown's short-lived time in the NFL made him grateful for one thing: that his mom made him keep his grades up in order to play sports.</p><p>Thanks to that, today Brown has another dream job, as CEO of a year-old startup called <a href="https://www.trywinwin.com/">Win-Win</a>.</p><p>But back in 2009, when the two-time all-American linebacker from Duke University got picked up as a free agent for the Indianapolis Colts, he thought his dreams of an NFL career had come true. It didn't. <a href="http://www.wthr.com/article/painter-makes-colts-final-cut">The Colts cut him from the roster </a>at the end of training camp.</p><p>He kicked around for a few years in <a href="http://www.oursportscentral.com/services/releases/mountain-lions-sign-12-more-players/n-4220013">the United Football League</a>, best known for <a href="http://footballgarbagetime.com/2015/06/what-the-united-football-league-who/">its fast failure and low salaries.</a> UFL went defunct after a few years.</p><p>"I didn't play football for as long as I wanted to. I didn't make it to retirement/pension. I was there for a Hollywood second, bounced around. Never able to get to big contract," he told Business Insider.</p><p>In 2013, after four years, he was done as a pro player. He planned to go get his MBA. That's when he, quite literally, got the calling to go to Silicon Valley and do a tech startup instead.</p><p>"I was getting ready to go to Rice University and a friend of mine in the Bay Area told me about this program that he heard about called Draper University. I didn't know anything about Silicon Valley. All I knew that Facebook was here," he said.</p><p>On a lark, he applied to the program but didn't think he'd really do it.</p><h2>Tim Draper comes calling</h2><p>Soon after, billionaire VC Tim Draper personally called Brown. Draper is known for his eccentric, boisterous, confident personality. He's hard to say no to.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Business Insider</span></p><p class="caption">Tim Draper</p></div><p></p></div></div>"If anyone else would have called, I probably would not have changed my plans to go back to school. But he said, "Hey, Mike, this is Tim. We loved your application. You're in. Full scholarship. We'll see you in March. And I was like, "Uh. I guess I'll change my plans."</p><p>Draper University, as the program is called, isn't a university but a two-month boot camp for wanna-be tech entrepreneurs. It had launched the year before as Draper's brainchild to teach people leadership skills in unconventional ways.</p><p>While other accelerator programs focus on building a product, Draper U does things like military survival training (Draper calls it "hero training") where students spend days in the wilderness foraging for food and shelter. They compete in offbeat contests too, like "to sell something embarrassing, or go to San Francisco and come back with a job offer, on paper, in 24 hours," <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/tim-draper-expands-his-entrepreneur-school-2016-5">Draper previously told Business Insider.</a></p><p>At one point, Draper even turned his university into a reality TV show, Startup U, that aired on ABC Family, though it only ran for one season.</p><p>Brown loved it.</p><p>"I came out of Draper very confident," he says. "Ideas are coming out Draper's head like crazy. As wacky as the program seems to be, it changed my life."</p><p>He vowed to himself, "I'm going to move to Silicon Valley and I'm going to start my own startup.'"</p><h2>Cold calls and working hard</h2><p>But he didn't have a job in the expensive Bay Area, so he went back to Houston, determined to return.</p><p>"Life was also happening. I got married. We had a child," he said. "During that time, I taught myself how to code, how to design. Knowing how to code or at the very least know how to talk to developers is important. So all day, all night, laying in bed, I was cranking out HTML/CSS, Javascript, jQuery all of it."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Kiip</span></p><p class="caption">Kiip founder Brian Wong.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Brown's wife finished up her master's degree in education (while she was pregnant) and got hired at California State University as a counselor.</p><p>"My wife believed in me. We moved to the Bay Area the next year. My job was to get a job," he said.</p><p>Once in the Bay Area, he contacted everyone he could think of. He sent a cold email to a guy at a startup called Kiip who graduated years after him, but remembered the star football player.</p><p>Kiip is a mobile advertising company known in its early days for its young founder, Brian Wong, who landed $200,000 of seed funding at age 19. He <a href="http://blogs.wsj.com/venturecapital/2010/08/06/betting-venture-capital-on-an-unproven-19-year-old/">was one of the youngest people to ever land funding</a> back then, in 2010.</p><p>Brown was offered an entry-level, cold-calls sales job. He worked his way up to a full sales job within four months and started making "good money," he says. He also had another kid on the way. "We moved to a bigger place. I became the tech guy for my friends. They started pitching me ideas. It was funny. I was in a really good place."</p><p>While at Kiip, his co-workers talked him into joining their Fantasy Football sports league, his first time playing. They convinced him it wasn't about winning the money at the end of the season but about teasing each other all season long.</p><p>That was the same season that FanDuel and DraftKings were smothering the airwaves with ads, which got Brown thinking. Why weren't the players tweeting about the daily fantasy?</p><p>"I called players that I knew and they told me two things: they didn't care enough to have an opinion or they flat out didn't like it," he said. One player, Pierre Garcon of the Washington Redskins <a href="http://www.espn.com/chalk/story/_/id/14011070/pierre-garcon-washington-redskins-leads-class-action-lawsuit-fanduel">even sued FanDuel </a>for using his image repeatedly on an infomercial without permission or compensation. (<a href="http://www.si.com/fantasy/2016/01/19/washington-redskins-pierre-garcon-fanduel-settlement">They settled out of court</a>.)</p><h2>Replace gambling with charity</h2><p>It gave Brown a "light bulb moment," he said. If fans were really just playing for fun, not money, why not let the money go to the player's charity, something "that is more impactful and more important to an athlete? Because they didn't even have to do anything. They didn't have to host a golf tournament or a benefit dinner," he said.</p><p>Brown was laid off from Kiip in November and founded his company, Win-Win in January, just in time to attend the Fantasy Sports Trade Association (FSTA) conference in Dallas.</p><p>That's where he pitched his startup idea to a panel that included Mark Cuban.</p><p>Cuban didn't invest, but the exposure helped him land a bunch of other angels who put in about $1 million, he says.</p><p>"Within nine months, I had built a small team, raised a good chunk of money for a first time founder and launched on time," Brown says. Win-Win currently employs four full-time people and three contractors, he says.</p><p>The first tournament was launched in September at the start of football season. The prize was a trip on a private jet with Arizona Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson to watch the LSU vs. Alabama game with him. The tournament raised money for the Louisiana flood victims via the Baton Rouge Area Foundation on behalf of Peterson.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Win-Win</span></p><p class="caption">Win-Win winners jet ride</p></div><p></p></div></div>Other tournaments gave away sideline tickets to Cardinals and San Francisco 49ers games, and prizes ranging from signed jerseys to discounts at the sports retailer, Fanatics. Brown wants everyone who plays to win something.</p><p>Currently, Win-Win makes its money by taking a small percentage of the entry fees but he says he's exploring other fees, too, perhaps on the marketing/advertising side.</p><p>For his first year, he's attracted about 3,500 players and had over over 65 athletes express interest. He's now ramping up to launch for the NBA season and launching other ways to play, like bracket games.</p><p>While there's no telling if Win-Win will ultimately succeed, the concept is intriguing. <p>For such a momentous and historic occasion, the ceremony is actually quite short and surprisingly straightforward.</p>
<h2>How One Becomes A Saint</h2>
<p>First, a person may be considered for sainthood, he/she must have been dead for at least 5 years. According to the <a href="http://www.usccb.org/upload/making-saints.pdf" target="_blank">United States Conference Of Catholic Bishops</a>, there are three steps to sainthood. </p>
<ul>
<li>"Venerable" - candidate is declared by a pope as having ''heroic' virtues. This is achieved through the collection of documents and testimonies. </li>
<li>"Blessed" - there must be proof that the candidate performed at least one miracle during his/her life</li>
<li>"Saint" - another miracle must be performed after death</li>
</ul>
<h2>Miracles</h2>
<p>In the case of Pope John Paul II, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/miracle-behind-john-paul-iis-sainthood-2014-4" target="_blank">a woman named Floribeth Mora </a><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/miracle-behind-john-paul-iis-sainthood-2014-4" target="_blank">was on her deathbed</a>, suffering from an incurable brain aneurysm<span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> </span>in 2011. <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_left"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>Juan Carlos Ulate/Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">Floribeth Mora cries at a press conference regarding her inexplicable healing from an incurable brain aneurysm.</p></div><p></p></div></div></span></p>

<p>Another miracle involved French nun Marie Simon Pierre, who said her symptoms of Parkinson's disease disappeared after she prayed to the pontiff following his death, according to <a href="http://abcnews.go.com/International/miracles-put-pope-john-paul-ii-fast-track/story?id=23467594" target="_blank">ABC News</a>.</p>
<p>As for Pope John XXIII, he is recognized as holy enough to be canonized with only one miracle. <span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">The pontiff reportedly cured a nun suffering a severe gastric illness in 1966.</span></p>
<h2><strong>What To Expect At Tomorrow's Ceremony <br /></strong></h2>
<p>The ceremony, celebrated mostly in Latin, will begin at approximately 2 a.m. Eastern Time with prayers, hymns, followed by the <span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"><a href="https://www.ewtn.com/Devotionals/Litanies/saints.htm" target="_blank">roll call of the Church's nearly 10,000 saints</a>, each one followed by the Latin phrase "Ora pro nobis" meaning "Pray for us."</span></p>

<p>Once all of this is completed, Pope Francis will process to the altar with con-celebrant <span>emeritus Pope Benedict XVI </span><span>and </span><span>150 cardinals and 700 bishops. </span></p>
<p><span>This is the first time Benedict will join Francis in celebrating Mass in public since his shocking <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/report-pope-benedict-to-resign-2013-2" target="_blank">resignation last year</a>. </span></p>
<p><span>T</span>he head of the Vatican's saint-making office will ask the pope three separate times to include John XXIII and John Paul II among the saints.</p>
<p>Three repeated requests for canonization signify the importance of the event.</p>
<p><span>Pope Francis will then say this lengthy sentence: </span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span>"For the honor of the Blessed Trinity, the exaltation of the Catholic faith and the increase of the Christian life, by the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, and of the holy Apostles Peter and Paul, and our own, after due deliberation and frequent prayer for divine assistance, and having sought the counsel of many of our brother bishops, we declare and define Blessed John XXIII and John Paul II be saints and we enroll them among the saints, decreeing that they are to be venerated as such by the whole church. In the name of the Holy Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit."</span></p>
<p>Relics, physical remains of a saint or an item they have touched in their life, are then brought to the altar. <span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">John Paul's blood and a small piece of skin taken from John XXIII will be the relics present tomorrow. </span></p>
<p>Then an official document recognizing the canonization is presented which marks the conclusion of the rite. <span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Mass proceeds as usual with </span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">6,00o priests on hand to distribute Communion in St. Peter's Square. </span></p>
