Overall, it is the 101th company in India to achieve this distinction. The eight-year-old startup joins the elite list of edtech unicorns Byju’s, Vedantu, Eruditus, Vedantu and Upgrad. It plans to use the latest capital for business expansion, branding, opening more learning centers, and introducing more course offerings. He turned it down to build a bootstrapped, profitable business out of PhysicsWallah. The PhysicsWallah currently has more than 20 centres across 18 cities with more than 10,000 students enrolled for 2022-23 academic year. It has 5.2 million downloads on its app on Google PlayStore and 6.9 million subscribers on YouTube. The company claims that over 10,000 of its students cracked competitive exams like NEET and JEE in 2020 and 2021 — thanks to its comprehensive, interactive and engaging educational content. According to several experts Business Insider spoke with, edtech would be among the worst impacted sectors as students have started going back to school. Even edtech companies like Unadacemy, Vedantu and FrontRow had to lay off 10-30% of their workforce in order to extend their runway.

India had added 12 unicorns in the comparable quarter last year. A unicorn is a startup valued at over a billion dollars. About 44 startups achieved this milestone in 2021 and that number was expected to be bigger this year thanks to the optimism in the market. However, contrary to expectations, the April-June quarter saw the least number of unicorns being created since September 2020. According to business intelligence firm Tracxn, the slowdown in the creation of unicorns is directly proportional to the slowdown in funding activities in the Indian startup ecosystem. The investors have limited capital to invest in startups, which makes them even more cautious about investing in bigger rounds or cash-burning businesses. Its competitor Nykaa currently had a market cap of ₹68,377 crore ($8.7 million), as pn June 9. Purplle — Founded by Manish Taneja and Rahul Dash in 2011 — is an ecommerce platform that offers beauty products, appliances and cosmetics. <ul><li>Funding winter of 2022-2023 is a stark reminder that growth at all costs, without the backbone of profitability, is a path to ruin.</li><li>The industry also witnessed unethical practices like circular trading, further complicating the landscape.</li><li>By mid-2024, the market should stabilize, presenting opportunities for investors with cleansed portfolios and profitable ventures. </li></ul>In 1999, amidst the dot-com frenzy, Warren Buffett's prophetic words at the Allen-Sunny Valley Conference foresaw the bubble's burst. I witnessed this, my first tech bubble-bust, firsthand as a 16-year-old trader in my dad’s office. At that time, companies, merely by donning a “tech” or “soft” label, saw their valuations soar. This pattern, a rollercoaster of tech stock highs and lows, has been a recurring theme in the two-plus decades since and is especially pronounced in India. The 2021-22 period, a time marked by soaring valuations and new paradigms for appraising tech companies, was no exception. Deep down, we knew this hyper-growth was unsustainable. The subsequent 'funding winter' of 2022- 2023 is a stark reminder that growth at all costs, without the backbone of profitability, is a path to ruin. The recent downturn reiterates a lesson we've seen repeatedly over the years: the frenzy around valuation and growth must be tempered by a return to fundamental business principles. As I've observed in my 24 years of investing, this boom and bust cycle is an old story, teaching us the same lesson each time. In the late 90s, eyeballs and clicks were the valuation cornerstone, mirroring the recent era where 'scale' overshadowed real profitability. The trend of scaling at all costs, ignoring the fundamentals of Lifetime Value (LTV) to Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC) ratios, led to inflated valuations. I saw companies claiming large revenues, but after stripping away GST, discounts, and direct costs, what remained was merely 'foam'—insubstantial. Investors, caught in a frenzy, were willing to pay exorbitant multiples on inflated revenues. A company claiming ₹24 crore in annual revenue, in reality, had just ₹9 crore, yet it fetched valuations of ₹240 crore. This discrepancy was exaggerated by a period of low-cost money due to global quantitative easing. However, as interest rates rose, these overvalued, cash-burning ventures crumbled, unable to sustain their business models without cheap capital. As the cost of capital has skyrocketed, the focus has rightfully shifted back to profitability, a lesson reiterated in each market cycle. The bottom line after taxes, not inflated revenue figures, truly determines a business's value. While burning cash may be viable temporarily, a clear path to profitability is essential, regardless of the industry. Let's not absolve investors, either. Many lowered their standards in their race to be seen as dynamic and founder-friendly. They prioritized deal-winning over diligence, forgoing governance and oversight. This approach turned them into mere brokers, seeking higher valuations for their investments rather than actual returns. This corrupted ecosystem was primed for a crash, and deservedly so. During the investment frenzy, there were ventures with strong, viable business models that didn’t initially catch investors' eyes. These businesses, grounded in consumer loyalty and solid financials, were overshadowed by cashburning counterparts. Many founders, under the sway of investor expectations, pivoted from profit-generating models to cash-intensive operations. However, ventures like Physicswallah, Zerodha, and Everest Fleet, which stayed true to their profitable roots, eventually took center stage. This shift wasn't easy, especially for businesses ingrained in a culture of heavy spending. Reducing marketing and operational costs, essential in leaner times, led to revenue dips for many. The industry also witnessed unethical practices like circular trading, further complicating the landscape. Looking towards 2024, I foresee a challenging first half for businesses reliant on high valuations. We'll likely witness mergers, substantial down rounds, or pivots to more sustainable models. By mid-2024, the market should stabilize, presenting opportunities for investors with cleansed portfolios and profitable ventures. Sectors like space tech, fintech infrastructure, RegTech, and enterprise SaaS are poised for growth, driven by strong problem-solving capabilities and profitability potential. This shift back to business fundamentals underscores a crucial lesson: innovation can't override the need for a profitable bottom line. No matter how groundbreaking the technology, its existence is questionable if it doesn't lead to a sustainable business model. As we embrace this evolution, 2024 might end on a high, heralding a new era of rational, value-driven investments. In conclusion, 2024 will be an exciting year for investing. As a favourite saying from one of my beloved Batman movies goes, "The night is darkest just before the dawn." In these funding winters, long-term winning investments can be found, separating the hay from the chaff. In these markets, winning investments are discovered, and unique businesses are at fantastic valuations. Think about the wealth creation Amazon and Infosys have had since their lows of 2000 or Microsoft and HDFC since their lows of 2010. Investors who have been prudent, sitting on cash, waiting for the market to return to normalcy, will find exceptional opportunities at fantastic prices. I expect 2024 to end on a very high note. Investors will get opportunities to buy out positions or to get into companies that are doing great work but have chosen the wrong path to gaining investor eyeballs, which would require capital to mend the errors. All of these will find opportunities in 2024. So, I expect 2024 to be a fantastic year for investing. I'm supremely excited. Startups in 2024: Innovation can't override a profitable bottom line

<ul><li>The Indian <keyword id="4222766" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="edtech-sector" source="Orion">edtech sector</keyword> is facing competition on all ends — access to funds, evolving technology and more. </li><li>Large universities, both Indian and international, are going for hybrid models – increasing competition to edtechs. </li><li>Experts are divided on how exactly conversational generative AI can impact the sector but a disruption is certain. </li></ul>The Indian <keyword id="1464841" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="edtech" source="Orion">edtech</keyword> players had a dream run during the COVID-19 pandemic and it even continued to do well as things opened up. However, things are becoming more challenging by the day for the sector now. Apart from the warmth that face-to-face interactions offer, technology itself – in the form of artificial intelligence (AI) – is changing the way children or even adults learn — making the fairly young edtech sector seeking a pivot for its next growth push. “There is nothing fundamentally different that edtechs are doing. One product is not much different from another. In addition to that, the sector has too much competition directly and indirectly,” says Anirudh A Damani, managing partner at Artha Venture Fund. Abhimanyu Bisht, general Partner at Capfort Ventures also believes that the basic edtech model of taking classes online will not survive anymore, and newer business models will have to come in. He believes that a hybrid model is the way forward for edtechs and that the sector needs to evolve. Hybrid models have competitors To be fair, the 4,500-odd companies in the edtech sector have been regrouping after the pandemic bust – like Byju’s, which went offline quickly after it acquired Aakash Educational Services, which has a large brick-and-mortar presence. Byju’s is now planning to take it public. Unacademy, Physicswallah and others too quickly expanded offline. But a large-scale shift in strategy might fall short of backers as venture capital (VC) funding in general has been slow — and for edtech especially, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/startups/news/ecomm-edtech-see-sharpest-drop-as-startup-fund-raise-falls-33-in-2022-pwc/articleshow/96909018.cms">the fall has been much sharper</a>. Funding to this sector peaked in 2021 at $4.2 billion, and fell by a sharp 40% to $2.5 billion in 2022 after the funding winter set in, a<a href="https://www.dealstreetasia.com/stories/india-edtech-funding-339905">ccording to DealStreetAsia-Data Vantage</a>. In the first quarter of 2023, the sector raised only $100 million, as per Inc24. VCs say that most of the funds to edtechs are in the form of seed funding. “There are a few startups that are gamifying learning or establishing community-based learning models and chasing newer models,” says Bisht. He, however, added that the valuations in the sector are now cognizant of the many headwinds the sector is now facing. Rising costs Apart from funds, another area of worry for the edtech players is the rise in established offline players chasing the hybrid models better and more efficiently. One such example is Indian School of Business (ISB) of Hyderabad that went online in a big way and is now offering certified courses online. “A brand like ISB offering online courses can help students save on time, cost and more. There is also competition that comes from foreign universities which offer online courses,” opines Damani. Even if edtechs go hybrid successfully, large universities with deep pockets can build a tech stack and outdo them. “The level of competition will only increase from local classes, private tutors and much more,” Damani says. ChatGPT, the new teacher The next wave of disruption in the sector — like in most sectors — might come from generative AI such as ChatGPT. A sentient AI that can respond to a user in natural language and can answer queries has all it takes to become a smart tutor. It has concerned all the stakeholders in the education system — from teachers who are worried about children using it as a home work tool, to large colleges that might now have to rethink their basic coding courses as AI can code better than humans. The biggest hit, however, might come to AI’s closest cousin, the edtechs. While a few edtech players say that they can use AI to build and offer personalisation, Damani believes that generative AI models are easy to copy, and hence, again, not a great differentiator. “Limited partners and fund managers today keep asking – how can we make money in this space and build a sustainable business? As of now, I do not see how,” he says. Bisht, however, believes that there is some play left in the AI game for edtechs. “How can a fifth grader use an AI directly? An edtech (company) can use a layer of edtech around it to build a personalized offering,” he explains. Only time can tell whether AI can enable or disable the edtech sector, but it will have to unlearn and relearn many concepts to keep up with the changing times.

Some of these big ticket deals included Zepto’s $200 million round, Ather Energy’s $128 million round and Absolute’s $100 million. In terms of unicorns, only one company — neobanking startup Open — saw its value rise over a billion dollars in May. Overall, Indian startups have raised $13.3 billion between January and May 2022.
