Frozen veggies can go a long way. </h2><p class="drop-cap">When it comes to shopping for healthier foods, Feller said one of the most common mistakes people make is buying foods they don't like just because they think they're "healthy."</p><div type="image" title="Dietician Maya Feller squeezing lime juice on a salad." height="3600" width="2401" msid="85596720" hostid="261"></div><p>"Just because you saw so-and-so on TV saying, 'I'm loving quinoa' doesn't mean that you have to love quinoa," Feller said. "What are the things that you eat that are in their whole and minimally processed form, and how can we increase the amount of times that they show up in your overall routine?"</p><p>For example, if you hate yogurt but want to improve your gut health, think about the foods you do enjoy. Increasing the amount of fiber you eat, like whole grains, can also help your digestive system.</p><p>But fresh produce and unprocessed foods aren't accessible to everyone, especially for people located in <a href="https://www.insider.com/eating-in-simulated-food-desert-2019-5">food deserts</a> where fresh fruits, <keyword id="11939289" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="vegetables" source="Orion">vegetables</keyword>, and unprocessed foods aren't readily available. </p><p>If you don't live near a grocery store that carries quality produce, Feller says you can make the most of what you have at your local convenience store or corner grocery. </p><p>Look out for additives on your packaging, she said. If you don't have time or get bored of your food easily, Feller says meal planning can help reduce your stress about food throughout the week. </p><p>Meal planning means coming up with a list of meals you're going to make that week along with a grocery list to shop for ahead of time. While your ingredients may not be prepped ahead of time, planning allows you to not stress about meals the morning before your day starts. </p><p>Think about what things can be prepped in advance, like chopping veggies to put in a container to cook later or pre-washed lettuce.</p><div type="image" title="Dietician Maya Feller drizzling olive oil on a tray of vegetables" height="1800" width="2401" msid="85596728" hostid="261"></div><h2>Tip #3: Season vegetables like you season your protein.</h2><p class="drop-cap">Feller recommends <keyword id="11939290" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="seasoning" source="Orion">seasoning</keyword> your vegetables. Boiling veggies and leaving them without seasoning can be a sure-fire way to continue disliking them.</p><p>"You got to give your vegetables a little bit of love, give them some flavors. They want onion. They want garlic. If you can tolerate it, they want a little bit of red pepper flakes," Feller said. </p><p>Ultimately, increasing the number of fresh veggies and unprocessed foods in your diet can help you clear up brain fog and eat healthier. Focus on changing the components of your meal rather than cutting out food groups or meals, she said.</p>

Turn forks in the road into opportunities, and don't be afraid to pivot</strong></h2><p class="drop-cap">Post grew up surrounded by nature. He was raised by a family of conservationists, so he found his passion outside in his northern California home's dirt and creeks. </p><p>While he said his interest in the environment came quickly, he didn't know what a career path involving nature would look like. </p><p>Post told Insider he remembers career days in elementary school when students' family members would present about their jobs as doctors, firemen, and lawyers - but he didn't see many scientists or people working in nature, he said.</p><p>Later, when he started studying ecology as an undergraduate at the University of California Berkeley, he learned about science careers that enticed him. </p><p>After earning a bachelor's degree in watershed ecology, Post joined a doctoral program in ecology at the University of California Berkeley and started teaching undergraduate students. Stoking students' curiosity about the environment made him realize that he loved connecting ecology and science, and so he decided to focus on building bridges between these two worlds.</p><p>Instead of continuing on his set path, Post pivoted with no plans. If you're interested in birds, grab a pair of binoculars. Instead, Post said slow down, look, and listen to the animals and plants that surround you.</p><p>"Get binoculars, go outside, and turn your phone off," he said.</p><p>"This winter, instead of heading to fancy ski resorts, Post and his wife, Rachel Pohl, grabbed their skis and explored their backyard in Montana.</p><p>Post said turning your passion into a full-fledged lifestyle is a long-term investment.</p><p>"It's not always easy, it's not always fun, and you're not always doing that thing that you love," he said. "But you're investing in that account that ultimately facilitates the thing you love."</p>

An ecologist reveals how to align passion with purpose to create a fulfilling life

"I used to make fun of that guy," Carter told Insider. Now, Carter says that's him.</p><p>The stylist, who's written three books about plant care and has <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reviews/out?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.target.com%2Fc%2Fhilton-carter-for-target%2F-%2FN-jcepq">a product line at Target</a>, sometimes finds himself scrolling and responding to direct messages while he walks his dog. But when he's tending to his <keyword id="6387511" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Plants">plants</keyword>, he's unplugged from the rest of the world, which he cherishes - even if it's just for a few minutes.</p><p>"It's my form of meditation," Carter said. "Being able to check in on plants, watering plants - all those are the moments where I'm not tied to my phone, scrolling through social media, or checking an email. Two years later, he decided to turn plant styling into a side hustle. Now, Carter has about 200 plants in his living space, and taking care of them is a big stress reliever. Carter said he also relieves stress by designing his home to make it feel more relaxing. To do this, Carter fills his space with natural tones and textures, like wood, and embraces natural light.</p><h2><strong>Carter draws on his plant-care expertise to explore professional ventures</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Hilton Carter sits on a desk and reads a book in a room filled with plants." height="4010" width="2673" msid="85217868" hostid="261"></div><p>To inspire others to embrace the beauty of plants in their own spaces, Carter wrote his first book, <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Wild-Home-style-beautiful-plants/dp/1782497137">"Wild at Home: How to Style and Care for Beautiful Plants,"</a> published by CICO Books in 2018.</p><p>By May 2019, Carter said he quit his role at an ad agency to be a full-time plant stylist. Since then, Carter has written two more books, <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Wild-Interiors-Beautiful-plants-beautiful/dp/1782498753">"Wild Interiors: Beautiful Plants in Beautiful Spaces"</a> in 2020 and <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Wild-Creations-Inspiring-Projects-Interior/dp/1800650256">"Wild Creations"</a> in April.</p><p>Carter's most recent title is full of DIY home projects and tips on caring for plants.</p><p>"It stemmed from being at home during the pandemic and trying to create something for myself to do," Carter said of "Wild Creations."</p><p>His most recent book includes some of what Carter calls "plant rants," pieces of advice he's picked up over the years about plant care.</p><div type="image" title="A side-by-side of two photos. Fiona is due in August.</p><p>Throughout the day, when Carter gets stressed, thinking about his growing family pulls him out of negative headspace.</p><p>"Whenever I feel any sort of negativity trying to creep in, somehow I'll lean back toward our daughter," Carter said. "It helps out a lot."</p>

"The patriarchy has told us that money is taboo, but that's a narrative perpetuated by racist, sexist, ableist systems that profit off of inaction."</p><p>She said marginalized groups have to manage money differently. "Unfortunately, we're just expected to 'know how to make money,' but these things impact us in a way that they don't for straight white men," she added.</p><p>That's what helped spark her current seven-figure company, <a href="https://herfirst100k.com/about">Her First 100K</a>, which embraced financial feminism to extinguish inequality through coaching and resources. "Talking about money and financial education is a form of protest for women and marginalized groups," Dunlap said.</p><p>Her journey to financial independence began when she was a 21-year-old college graduate who became disillusioned with corporate work. "I wanted to go into corporate marketing, work my way up, and maybe be VP by 30," she said. "Two weeks into my corporate job I was, like, 'Nope!'"</p><p>Dunlap soon decided to save $100,000 by the time she was 25, and she chronicled it on a blog that would eventually become "Her First 100K." She told Insider that she followed four steps to reach her goal - dubbed <a href="https://herfirst100k.com/financial-feminist-show-notes/2021/5/24/5-achieve-your-financial-goals-aka-the-financial-game-plan">The Financial Game Plan</a> - and it's the same steps that have helped her growing online community of women.</p><div type="image" title="Tori Dunlap wearing a black short-sleeve dress with a necklace, a pair of white sunglasses, and a fanny pack that says &quot;Wild Feminist.&quot;" height="1600" width="2400" msid="85020779" hostid="261"></div><h2><strong>Step 1: Automate your savings account and create an emergency fund</strong></h2><p class="drop-cap">According to Dunlap, the first thing people wanting to save should do is automate their savings account. "You simply set up an automatic transfer either from your checking account to your savings account," she said, noting that many companies allow employees to do this from a payroll platform.</p><p>"We do this for a couple of reasons," she said. "One, it's happening completely on auto-pilot. You don't have to think about it. You don't have to transfer your money into savings."</p><p>"Two, you're doing what's called paying yourself first. Meaning that before you've even paid rent or before you've bought your groceries, you are paying yourself. You are your first bill."</p><p>Dunlap said people should also create an emergency fund once they start <keyword id="6370266" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="saving">saving</keyword>. Emergency funds are a cushion for when an unexpected life event throws your finances into disarray. "That's the most expensive debt people most likely have," she said.</p><p>In a May <a href="https://herfirst100k.com/financial-feminist-show-notes/2021/5/24/5-achieve-your-financial-goals-aka-the-financial-game-plan">episode</a> of her podcast, she broke down the process, saying that people with multiple credit cards should pay off the highest debt first. "I have a lot of clients who when they first come to me they go, 'OK, well, I'll put $15 a month extra toward credit card No. 1 and $15 extra to credit card No. 2,'" Dunlap said. "I would rather you just take that 30 extra dollars a month and put it toward the most expensive credit card.</p><p>"Focus on the one that's costing you the most money and prioritize paying that one down first."</p><div type="image" title="Tori Dunlap wearing a black short-sleeve dress with a necklace, hoop earrings, and yellow eyeliner." height="1600" width="2400" msid="85020789" hostid="261"></div><h2><strong>Step 3: Invest in your retirement through a Roth IRA and 401(k)</strong></h2><p class="drop-cap">The race to retirement can be a tricky one, so after the emergency fund is done and you've started paying off your credit cards, you want to start saving for retirement, Dunlap said. She suggested that people prioritize investing through a 401K or a Roth IRA in tandem with paying down your lower interest debt like student loans, mortgages, and car loans.</p><p>In a viral <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@herfirst100k/video/6950292896205606149?lang=en&amp;is_copy_url=1&amp;is_from_webapp=v1ebapp=v1">TikTok</a>, she said she's already on track to have $6 million saved up by the time she retires.</p><div type="image" title="Tori Dunlap wearing a black short-sleeve top with hoop earrings, a necklace, and a fanny pack that says &quot;Wild Feminist.&quot;" height="1600" width="2400" msid="85020793" hostid="261"></div><h2><strong>Step 4: Start saving for big purchases like a home and college tuition </strong></h2><p class="drop-cap">Finally, people should start saving for large, more expensive items. "No. 4 is what I call saving for the big stuff," she said. "So while you're saving for retirement and paying down your lower-interest debt, let's start saving for a house or the kids' college tuition."</p><p>The big stuff includes life goals outside an emergency fund and other payments that must be met. </p><p>In the same May episode of her podcast, Dunlap explained that people should open separate high-yield savings accounts to start this stage. For example, she said to set up a separate high-yield savings account to help accumulate a down payment for a house.</p><p>"And then maybe how you have another high-yield savings account for your wedding fund," she said. "Now we get messages probably every 15 to 30 minutes saying things, like, 'I was able to leave my abusive husband' or 'I was able to pay off my credit-card debt, so I don't feel burdened anymore.'"</p><p>Dunlap recognized that when women understand money, they have access to protection, equality, and freedom. She hopes "Her First 100K" can help make this a reality for more people. "When a woman has money, she has choices," she said. "She can leave a toxic situation, she can start a business, she can choose whether or not to have children, and so much more."</p>
