They don't have a sense of humor, that's what I think."</p><h2>Leroy-Beaulieu said previously that French viewers were "intrigued and disappointed" by her character Sylvie</h2><div type="image" title="emily in paris season 2 sylvie emily camille" height="2400" width="3600" msid="88742177" hostid="261"></div><p>On the first two seasons of "Emily in Paris," Sylvie runs luxury marketing firm Savoir as the titular character's boss, an elegantly dressed, uber-successful urbanite reminiscent of Miranda Priestly in 2006's "The Devil Wears Prada." </p><p>In a December 2021 interview with <a href="https://www.vulture.com/article/emily-in-paris-season-2-philippine-leroy-beaulieu-interview.html">Vulture</a>, Leroy-Beaulieu said she's found the French to be "intrigued and disappointed" by Sylvie, a character she said many of them misunderstand and consider a cliché. Americans, on the other hand, view the head of Savoir as a "French bitch," a stereotype she said "people love."</p><p>Throughout the show, Sylvie has dwindling patience for Emily's overt Americanness. When the two women are together, she highlights how out of place Emily appears, even after spending two seasons in Paris. But Leroy-Beaulieu told Vulture that their relationship is barreling towards a "crescendo."</p><p>"That's the whole point of their relationship. It's a 'mature feminine who's teaching a younger feminine something,'" she said, later adding, "The essence of Emily and Sylvie is profound."</p><h2>Leroy-Beaulieu, 58, revealed that Sylvie was originally supposed to be cast by an actress in her 30s or 40s</h2><div type="image" title="sylvie Erik DeGroot emily in paris" height="2400" width="3600" msid="88742178" hostid="261"></div><p>While Sylvie certainly <a href="https://www.vulture.com/article/emily-in-paris-season-2-philippine-leroy-beaulieu-interview.html">indulges some of Star's over-the-top clichés</a>, with her wine-filled lunches and in-office cigarettes, Leroy-Beaulieu joked that even she isn't as French as Sylvie, a character she said was originally written to be a younger, 35 or 40-year-old woman.</p><p>"It's an opportunity to do things and say things you never do in life because you're never that French," she told Page Six.</p><p>And, ironically, Leroy-Beaulieu said she relates to Emily as the young woman tries to make Paris into her home. Born in Rome, the actress moved to the French city with her mother at 11 years old following her parents' divorce, she told <a href="https://www.you.co.uk/philippine-leroy-beaulieu-interview-2021/">You Magazine</a> last December.</p><p>"Paris is not a very easy city," Leroy-Beaulieu told the publication, comparing its inhabitants to "closed shells" that make it daunting for newcomers to "integrate" themselves.</p><p>Despite Leroy-Beaulieu's French name and French heritage (her father, actor Philippe Leroy, was born in Paris), she said she "was still treated like a foreigner."</p><p>"Because I had a little accent at that time, I was hated by my peers at school — even by the teachers," she explained to You, adding, "Parisians, they're not welcoming."</p><p><em>Season two of "Emily in Paris" is currently available to stream on Netflix. </em></p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>"Emily in Paris" has now made it to the end of its fourth season.</li><li>But according to a language teacher, Emily still hasn't made much progress with her French.</li></ul><p><em>Warning: This article contains spoilers for "Emily in Paris" season four.</em></p><p>Emily Cooper's French faux pas in the most recent season of "<a target="_blank" class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/emily-in-paris-worst-moments-bad-details-season-4-2024-8">Emily in Paris</a>" are "much less frequent," but she's still a long way from mastering the language, according to a language expert.</p><p>Following the release of the final episodes of season four on <a target="_blank" class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/streaming/netflix-price">Netflix</a>, a French language teacher has tracked Emily's <a target="_blank" class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-travel-in-france-without-speaking-french-2018-7">French comprehension and communication</a> all the way from the pilot to the recent season finale.</p><p>It will not come as a surprise that Emily (<a target="_blank" class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/most-daring-looks-lily-collins-has-worn-over-the-years-2022-12">Lily Collins</a>) may have fared better in the city had she graduated beyond beginner French lessons and taken more time to practice.</p><p>"Her avoidance of learning the language has prevented her from fully integrating with other Parisians," <a target="_blank" class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://365deb2f.streaklinks.com/CF3suEM6em9vVWjAYw-iRzSt/http%3A%2F%2Fbabbel.com%2F">Babbel</a> Live French Teacher Malcolm Massey told Business Insider.</p><p>As audiences see by the end of season four, her poor grasp of the language also becomes a key issue in her relationship with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/visiting-emily-in-paris-gabriel-restaurant-in-real-life-photos-2023-1">her neighbor Gabriel </a>(Lucas Bravo).</p><h2 id="f66c1a2d-b12c-40fc-8343-747f3ec97edb"><strong>In season one, Emily avoided using even basic French.</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Lily Collins as Emily Cooper and Samuel Arnold as Julien in &quot;Emily in Paris&quot; season one." height="2399" width="3199" msid="113550458" hostid="261" sizebytes="378340"></div><p>When <a target="_blank" class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/emily-in-paris-locations-look-in-real-life-versus-show-2022-12">Emily first arrived in Paris</a>, she avoided using even basic French greetings.</p><p>"So many things are going wrong here," Massey said of Emily's first encounter with Sylvie (Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu) and Julien (Samuel Arnold) at the marketing agency Savoir.</p><p>"Emily's unprepared to interact in French on the most basic level. She greets in English, doesn't even ask if he speaks English, and pulls out a translator app," he said.</p><p>To Massey, this is a major no-no.</p><p>He said that memorizing a simple line such as "Bonjour, je m'appelle Emily. Vous parlez anglais?" would have shown that she had a least made an effort.</p><h2 id="38c30119-7fde-4df0-b614-ca5c011d84a4"><strong>In season two, Emily writes a letter full of grammatical errors.</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Camille Razat as Camille in &quot;Emily in Paris&quot; season two." height="1258" width="1677" msid="113550463" hostid="261" sizebytes="38502"></div><p>When Camille (Camille Razat) discovers that Emily has slept with her boyfriend, Emily attempts to make amends by explaining herself in a letter. But unfortunately, the end product is riddled with mistakes.</p><p>"Kudos for sticking with only French, but there are plenty of errors made in this letter," Massey said, adding: "She's come a long way, but there's still lots of room for improvement."</p><p>More specifically, he suggested that instead of writing "je suis triste que je suis coquin" ("I'm sad that I'm naughty"), Emily should have realized that "coquin" holds quite playful connotations and opted for a less suggestive word.</p><p>"Je suis triste de t'avoir trahi" ("I am sad to have betrayed you") would've worked better, Massey said.</p><h2 id="b8c6e33d-3567-4290-954f-83d79f92424f"><strong>In season three, Emily continues to make obvious mistakes that show she is unwilling to 'assimilate to the culture.'</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Lily Collins as Emily in &quot;Emily in Paris&quot; season three." height="2400" width="3600" msid="113550465" hostid="261" sizebytes="1148178"></div><p>In the third season, Emily takes up a temporary position as a server at Gabriel's restaurant after losing her marketing job.</p><p>Unfortunately, her French isn't up to scratch, and she makes a serious mistake when she fails to recognize the distinction between champignons (mushrooms) and Champagne (Champagne), which leads to one of the customers having a serious allergic reaction.</p><p>Instead of apologizing, Emily complains that the two words sound similar to her, proving that she's "simply not ready" to be in a role where communication is key, Massey said.</p><p>"She has been living and working in Paris for nine months at this point in the show, so I would expect for her pronunciation and comprehension to be a bit better, especially with something as simple as champignon/champagne," Massey said.</p><p>Later in this season, Emily meets a man named Théodule. Unable to pronounce his name, she ends up giving him the nickname Ted instead.</p><p>Massey said it was "another example of her choosing something that is easier for her rather than trying to assimilate to the culture, which can often be seen as rude."</p><h2 id="dcbab899-8a8b-46e5-abcf-cab446acbd79"><strong>By season four, Emily's French faux pas are a 'lot less frequent' — but it may be too little too late.</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Lily Collins as Emily in &quot;Emily in Paris&quot; season four." height="2024" width="2699" msid="113550459" hostid="261" sizebytes="175416"></div><p>Emily is far from being fluent by the time season four rolls around, although her "faux pas are much less frequent," Massey said.</p><p>But audiences still don't hear her speaking a whole lot of French.</p><p>Perhaps put off by her earlier blunders, Emily communicates mostly in English, although she seems happy to follow the odd conversation in French.</p><p>This doesn't necessarily help her improve her language skills, as evidenced when she mistakenly identifies the word "bordel" as referring to a brothel when speaking to Julien and Luc (Bruno Gouery).</p><p>Massey said: "The word also has a more idiomatic meaning as 'a big mess.' These types of confusing double-meanings can be quite difficult for non-native speakers to understand, but Emily is at least putting herself in the right position — making friends with native Parisians — to expand her vocabulary and understanding."</p><p>Nevertheless, it's not until after Emily's on-and-off love interest calls her out for only wanting to communicate in English that she finally doubles down and starts improving her French.</p><div type="image" title="Lucas Bravo as Gabriel in &quot;Emily in Paris&quot; season four." height="2400" width="3600" msid="113550464" hostid="261" sizebytes="248460"></div><p>In the season finale, Emily leaves Gabriel a voicemail spoken entirely in French.</p><p>Describing Emily's language skills as finally "satisfactory" in this episode, Massey said that "while short, this message shows that she is working to learn more French and to understand Gabriel more fully."</p><p>"While it's not particularly fluid, and her pronunciation is still a bit off, she gets her point across and uses the right words and tenses," he added.</p><p>However, Emily's decision to improve her language skills may have come a little too late, as she is asked to head up Agence Grateau's new office in Rome.</p>

She's making a life there."</p><p>The series creator later echoed his remarks in an interview with <a href="https://variety.com/2021/tv/news/emily-in-paris-season-2-french-culture-darren-star-interview-1234966192/">Variety</a>, saying Emily will "embrace the city a little more" in season two. </p><p>"When she got there, she got a bit of a free pass in the beginning and I don't think it will be quite as easy for her in second season. I think she will be more assimilated, in terms of living in Paris and stepping up to the challenges of learning the language," Star explained. </p><p>As Emily transitions from visitor to full-time resident, she's going to have to make "some surprising tough choices," the "Sex and the City" creator told <a href="https://www.eonline.com/news/1199823/will-emily-in-paris-return-for-season-2-creator-darren-star-gave-us-a-little-hope">E! News</a>.</p><p>"The show's so much about the culture undermining her expectations of how things are and how things seem. And everything will not be as it seems. It's always about challenging her American worldview. We certainly have a lot of forks in the road and a lot of places to go," he said. </p><h2><strong>Mindy may find a love interest of her own</strong></h2><div type="image" title="emily in paris" height="900" width="1200" msid="80188702" hostid="261"></div><p>In season one, Mindy is a high-energy au pair determined to carve out her own path independent of her wealthy father. She also happens to be Emily's closest friend in Paris. </p><p>As she looks ahead at the show's second season, Park pointed out that there's plenty of room for her character to find love as well. </p><p>"I know I'm in good hands. I trust what's planned. But a love interest would be fun," she told <a href="https://www.oprahmag.com/entertainment/a34150827/emily-in-paris-season-2-release-date-cast-news/">Oprah Magazine</a>, adding, "But the most important thing to me is the friendship with Emily."</p><p>As for Collins, the actress predicted a new set of adventures now that Mindy moved into Emily's apartment building toward the end of season one. </p><p>"I'm excited for Mindy to move into the apartment building because I feel like that's going to cause some mayhem. I just think she's going to throw a wrench into the situation, and I'm imagining apartment game nights or something," Collins told <a href="https://www.vogue.co.uk/arts-and-lifestyle/article/lily-collins-emily-in-paris-interview">Vogue</a>. </p><h2><strong>The love triangle between Gabriel, Emily, and Camille will probably be a major storyline</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="Emily in Paris" height="1177" width="2000" msid="80188703" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>The final scene at the end of season one - when Gabriel kissed Emily one moment and received a message from his ex-girlfriend Camille the next - left viewers desperate for answers. Even the "Emily in Paris" cast was thrown off by the cliffhanger. </p><p>"We were like, 'Wait, are you kidding me - how do you leave it pending like this?'" Collins recalled during an interview with <a href="https://www.vogue.co.uk/arts-and-lifestyle/article/lily-collins-emily-in-paris-interview">Vogue</a>.</p><p>The "Okja" actress admitted that she isn't sure if Camille is aware of Emily and Gabriel's feelings for each other. </p><p>"That voicemail in the finale threw me off," she said. </p><p>Collins added that she hasn't counted out the idea of a romance between Camille and Emily. </p><p>"There are tons of little moments where you're like, '... Does Camille like Emily?' You can't really get a vibe, and I feel like that ambiguity is what keeps Emily intrigued," she said. </p><p>Collins added: "I feel like the next season will only create more love triangle drama, although maybe Emily will have a little bit of a stronger handle on the situation… Or maybe not." </p><div type="image" title="emily in paris lily collins" height="2400" width="3600" msid="80188705" hostid="261"></div><p>Bravo, who plays the series heartthrob, agreed with Collins and said he picked up on small intimate moments between the two women.</p><p>"We planted a few seeds about different characters. It's all little seeds," he told <a href="https://www.cosmopolitan.com/entertainment/celebs/a34314614/lucas-bravo-gabriel-emily-in-paris-interview/">Cosmopolitan</a>. </p><p>Bravo continued: "Anything could happen among the three of them. I think Darren wants this second season to be really open-minded."</p>
