<keyword id="13001" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pollution" source="Orion">Pollution</keyword> was responsible for nine million deaths in 2019 - equivalent to one in six deaths worldwide - and India leads with nearly 2.4 million deaths, according to a study published on Wednesday in The <keyword id="4392473" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="lancet-planetary-health" source="Orion">Lancet Planetary Health</keyword>.<br /><br />Of the nearly 2.4 million deaths in 2019, air pollution accounted for 16.7 lakh deaths - the highest by any country. Further, more than 5 lakh lives were lost in the country due to water pollution, followed by occupational pollution (more than one lakh) and lead exposure (over 2 lakh).<br /><br />Globally, of the nine million pollution - attributable deaths in 2019, air pollution (both household and ambient) remains responsible for the greatest number of deaths at 6.67 million worldwide.<br /><br />Water pollution was responsible for 1.36 million premature deaths. Lead contributed 9,00,000 premature deaths, followed by toxic occupational hazards at 870,000 deaths.<br /><br />The report states that although the number of deaths from pollution sources associated with extreme poverty (such as indoor air pollution and water pollution) have decreased, these reductions are offset by increased deaths attributable to industrial pollution (such as ambient air pollution and chemical pollution).<br /><br />"The health impacts of pollution remain enormous, and low- and middle-income countries bear the brunt of this burden. Despite its enormous health, social and economic impacts, pollution prevention is largely overlooked in the international development agenda," said <keyword id="351236" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="richard-fuller" source="Orion">Richard Fuller</keyword>, from <keyword id="9352701" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="global-alliance-on-health-and-pollution" source="Orion">Global Alliance on Health and Pollution</keyword>, Geneva, Switzerland.<br /><br />"Preventing pollution can also slow climate change - achieving a double benefit for planetary health - and our report calls for a massive, rapid transition away from all fossil fuels to clean, renewable energy," added co-author Professor <keyword id="5580088" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="philip-landrigan" source="Orion">Philip Landrigan</keyword>, Director, <keyword id="13964888" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="global-public-health-programme" source="Orion">Global Public Health Programme</keyword> and Global Pollution Observatory at Boston College.<br /><br />The decline in deaths from traditional pollution since 2000 (household air pollution from solid fuels and unsafe water) is most evident in Africa. This can be explained by improvements in water supply and sanitation, antibiotics and treatments, and cleaner fuels.<br /><br />However, this mortality decrease has been offset by a substantial increase in deaths from exposure to industrial pollution - such as ambient air pollution, lead pollution, and other forms of chemical pollution - across all regions over the past 20 years.<br /><br />This is particularly evident in Southeast Asia, where rising levels of industrial pollution are combined with ageing populations and increasing numbers of people exposed.<br /><br />Ambient air pollution was responsible for 4.5 million deaths in 2019, up from 4.2 million deaths in 2015 and 2.9 million in 2000. Deaths from hazardous chemical pollutants increased from 0.9 million in 2000, to 1.7 million in 2015, to 1.8 million in 2019, with 900,000 deaths attributable to lead pollution in 2019.<br /><br />Overall, deaths from modern pollution have increased by 66 per cent in the past two decades, from an estimated 3.8 million deaths in 2000 to 6.3 million deaths in 2019. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Some <keyword id="74032" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Sunscreen">sunscreen</keyword> batches have been found to contain benzene, a cancer-causing chemical.</li><li>Long-term benzene exposure has been linked to a five-fold increase in leukemia risk.</li><li>The lab that identified the contaminated batches is asking the <keyword id="6354656" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="fda">FDA</keyword> to recall the products.</li></ul><p>An independent laboratory is calling for 40 batches of sunscreen products to be pulled from shelves after they were found to contain significant amounts of benzene, a known <keyword id="965284" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="carcinogen">carcinogen</keyword>.</p><p>Benzene has been linked to increased <keyword id="29796" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="cancer-risk">cancer risk</keyword> since 1977, when a <a href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(77)90074-5/fulltext">landmark study</a> found workers who were exposed to benzene over nine years had a five times higher than normal risk of leukemia. Nowadays, the chemical is most commonly found in <a href="https://www.cancer.org/cancer/cancer-causes/benzene.html#:~:text=Cigarette%20smoke%20accounts%20for%20about,levels%20are%20usually%20very%20low).">cigarette smoke and gasoline fumes</a>.</p><p>Although the small amounts found in the sunscreen products are far less toxic in comparison, experts say any benzene exposure poses a <keyword id="6354750" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="health">health</keyword> risk.</p><p>"There's no such thing as a safe level of exposure, and that's especially true for children," Philip Landrigan, director of the Global Public Health Program and Global Pollution Observatory at Boston College, told <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-05-28/sunscreen-with-leukemia-causing-benzene-is-latest-summer-worry?sref=lbQAzuXj">Bloomberg</a>.</p><p>Valisure, a pharmaceutical testing company, tested 294 batches of sunscreen from 69 different brands. The lab is asking the Food and Drug Administration to recall 40 batches from 10 different brands including Neutrogena, Banana Boat, and CVS Health.</p><p>David Light, Valisure's founder, told Bloomberg he thinks the problem is likely rooted in specific batches, not brands. Benzene is often used as an industrial solvent, so it's possible the sunscreen makers were unknowingly using contaminated solvents in some of their products.</p><p>"In this case it really seems to be a manufacturing contaminant problem, not an inherent problem with sunscreen," Light told <a href="https://www.cnet.com/health/lab-asks-fda-to-recall-40-batches-of-sunscreen-from-neutrogena-banana-boat-and-more/">CNET</a>. "People should still continue to use sunscreen, I think, is an important message to get across."</p>

More than smoking, hunger or natural disasters. More than AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria combined.</p><p>One out of every six premature deaths in the world in 2015 - about 9 million - could be attributed to disease from toxic exposure, according to a <a href="http://www.thelancet.com/commissions/pollution-and-health">major study</a> released Thursday in the Lancet medical journal. The financial cost from pollution-related death, sickness and welfare is equally massive, the report says, costing some $4.6 trillion in annual losses - or about 6.2 percent of the global economy.</p><p>"There's been a lot of study of <span>pollution</span>, but it's never received the resources or level of attention as, say, AIDS or climate change," said epidemiologist Philip Landrigan, dean of global health at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York, and the lead author of the report.</p><p>The report marks the first attempt to pull together data on disease and death caused by all forms of <span>pollution </span>combined.</p><p>While the top 10 countries with the highest death tolls were reported mostly in Asia, a few countries outside the region appeared on the list, including the US and a few African nations. Researchers who have tallied up these effects say environmental contamination is now among the top global killers, responsible for one in six deaths worldwide.</p><p>Pollution is more deadly than smoking, kills nearly 15 times more people than all the world's wars and violence combined, and is three times as deadly as AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis all put together, killing a total of nine million people a year, <span>according to a report released by</span><span> </span><a href="http://www.thelancet.com/commissions/pollution-and-health">The Lancet Commission on Pollution and Health</a><span> </span><span>on October 19.</span></p><p>Air pollution is by far the worst offender, but add in contaminated water, dirt and unhygienic working conditions around the globe, and it becomes apparent that pollution is more <a href="http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs310/en/">dangerous to people than heart disease</a>, the number one leading cause of death worldwide.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(17)32345-0/fulltext">The Lancet</a></span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>"No one has ever pulled together, in one place, information on the toll of disease and death attributable to all forms of pollution," report author Dr. Philip Landrigan, who's been studying the effects of pollution on child health for decades, <a href="http://www.thelancet.com/pb-assets/Lancet/stories/audio/lancet/2017/19october_pollution.mp3">told The Lancet</a>. He says the dangers of pollution are often hidden from the public eye, because information is folded into separate statistics.</p><p>The report authors say the new pollution numbers are "intimately" linked to climate change mainly because of air pollution, which is a major source of greenhouse gases. Fuel combustion of all kinds "accounts for 85% of airborne particulate pollution and for almost all pollution by oxides of sulphur and nitrogen," according to the authors.</p><p>Fossil fuels, inefficient cook stoves in the developing world, and slash and burn agriculture all contribute to bad air. The good news is that pollution rates from things like smoky cook stoves and unclean drinking water are going down, as low- and middle-income countries emerge from poverty.</p><p>But in many places, the deadly toll of pollution is only going to get worse unless cleaner energy sources are tapped, according to the report. As high-income countries continue to burn massive amounts of fossil fuels, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/world-bank-fast-growing-global-economies-2015-6">rapid rates of development</a> in poor and middle income countries compound the global air problem. Cities, responsible for 75% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions, are especially deadly - nearly 90% of urbanites worldwide are breathing air that doesn't meet World Health Organization air quality standards, the report says.</p><p>Development efforts often mean more mining, higher rates of deforestation, increased use of insecticides, bigger electricity generation demands, and more gas-powered cars on the roads. This all comes at a cost, the authors say. Productivity losses from what they refer to as "unhealthy and unsustainable development" are prompting illness and death that rob the world economy of 2% GDP annually. </p><p>It doesn't have to be this way. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>To buy organic, or not to buy organic?</p><p>That question has probably pained every grocery shopper with a budget large enough to consider it.</p><p>Every year, an organization called the Environmental Working Group (EWG) tries to help answer this question by highlighting which foods have the most and least "pesticide loads" - the chemicals organic produce is supposed to be grown without. EWG's <a href="https://www.ewg.org/foodnews/dirty_dozen_list.php">"Dirty Dozen"</a> list ranks the 12 fruits and vegetables with the highest levels - it includes strawberries, peaches, spinach, and tomatoes.</p><p>There's a small problem with the ranking, however, according to <a href="http://foodscience.ucdavis.edu/people/faculty/winter.html">Dr. Carl Winter</a>, a professor of toxicology at the University of California, Davis.</p><p>The list doesn't use <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Toxicological-Risk-Assessment-Chemicals-Practical/dp/0849372658">a standard test</a> designed to tell whether something is dangerous for human health. EWG measures the amount of pesticide residues on each piece of produce, but doesn't take into account the tenet that the dose makes the poison.</p><p><strong>In other words, the <em>amounts</em> of pesticides found on the Dirty Dozen list are too small to merit concern in the first place.</strong></p><p><span>"Typical US consumer exposure to the most common pesticides found on the [list] is at a tiny fraction of what would be of health concern," Winter told Business Insider.</span></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>To decide whether a food or other substance is safe to eat or use, toxicologists like Winter - who specialize in studying the effects of chemicals on the body - focus on three main things. </p><ol><li>Toxicity of the thing being studied (in this case, pesticides)</li><li>The amount of consumption of the food with said pesticides in it</li><li>The residue levels of pesticides found on the food</li></ol><p>The "Dirty Dozen" doesn't look at any of the three, Winter says.</p><p>Winter recently <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3135239/">peeled apart the components</a> of the "Dirty Dozen" ranking in a study he co-authored, which was published in the Journal of Toxicology. In the paper, he finds the following issues with the system used to classify produce as "dirty":</p><ol><li>Of the most commonly detected pesticides found on the 12 pieces of produce that the EWG listed as "dirty," Winter found the amounts were so low that they "pose negligible risks to consumers"</li><li>Eating organic forms of those 12 fruits and veggies instead doesn't significantly reduce any of those negligible risks</li><li>The methodology used by the EWG "lacks scientific credibility."</li></ol><p>So why does the EWG continue to come out with its "Dirty Dozen" list every year, even though it doesn't really tell you how dangerous specific foods are?</p><p>According to Monica Amarelo, EWG's director of communications, "the Shopper's Guide is not and has never claimed to be a risk assessment. It's a straightforward ranking of which fruits and vegetables tested by the USDA had the most pesticides."</p><p>And some researchers say this has some value, at least for people with young children or toddlers. Indeed, some evidence - such as a <a href="http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/130/6/e1757">2012 study published in the journal Pediatrics</a> - suggests pesticide exposure may affect little ones more acutely than it does adults.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>"Even low levels of pesticide exposure can be harmful to infants, babies and young children, so when possible, parents and caregivers should take steps to lower children's exposures to pesticides while still feeding them diets rich in healthy fruits and vegetables," <a href="https://www.mountsinai.org/profiles/philip-j-landrigan">Dr. Philip Landrigan</a>, a pediatrician at the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine in New York, <a href="http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation-now/2017/03/10/strawberries-and-these-other-foods-have-most-pesticides/98966374/">tells USA Today</a>.</p><p>Winter disagrees.</p><p>"This latest iteration of the 'Dirty Dozen' follows the same flawed methodology as all of its predecessors and therefore is of dubious value to consumers," Winter says.
