It's been sitting in storage since the end of the series' run in 1989. After his jail stint in 2008, for example, the moneyed sex offender commissioned a mural depicting him in prison garb. "<span>I had this painted," he <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jeffrey-epstein-prison-scene-painting-new-york-mansion-2019-7">told a visitor</a> who encountered the mural at his Manhattan mansion, "because there is always the possibility that could be me again."</span></p><p><span>The contents of Epstein's public Spotify account, recently identified by Business Insider, gesture in a similar direction. They illustrate a wildly varied taste in music, from Beethoven to Elton John and Pitbull to Céline Dion. They also suggest a preference for hard-rock songs from the 1970s that emphasized male sexual conquest, and the odd song about sexual attraction between children and adults - Van Halen's "Hot for Teacher" and an Oscar Peterson performance of "My Heart Belongs to Daddy."</span></p><p><span>Meanwhile, a Pinterest page includes a painting of Peter Pan, the boy who never grows up and leads a young girl and her siblings out of their home.</span></p><p>Business Insider found three of Epstein's online accounts after reviewing his correspondence with the Florida probation officers who supervised his release in 2009 after serving 13 months in jail on charges that included soliciting a minor for prostitution. The correspondence indicates Epstein had an email address with the username "jeevacation" - a combination of his initials, JEE, and the word "vacation."</p><p>Business Insider found profiles with the same username on <a href="https://twitter.com/jeevacation">Twitter</a>, <a href="https://pinterest.com/jeevacation/">Pinterest</a>, and <a href="https://open.spotify.com/user/jeevacation">Spotify</a>. The profiles on Twitter and Pinterest bear the name "Jeffrey Epstein." The Spotify account lacks his full name, but his followers on the music platform include accounts that appear to belong to women in his social network.</p><p>A lawyer for Epstein, contacted prior to the jailed multi-millionaire's apparent suicide earlier this month, did not respond to a request for comment. </p><p>A <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-court-socialmedia-idUSKBN19A1ZB">2017 Supreme Court ruling</a> allows sex offenders to use social media, though individual platforms can ban individual users. The state of New York, where <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jeffrey-epstein-list-of-assets-owned-2019-7">Epstein had a townhouse</a>, requires sex offenders to submit "Internet information," including email addresses and social media accounts, to the state sex offender registry. That information isn't publicly available, but social media companies with users under age 18 can request the information.</p><h3>On the playlists: 'Before You Accuse Me' and Louis C.K.</h3><p>Epstein's Twitter presence was insignificant: he never tweeted or followed anyone. It has 19 playlists that were created between 2011 through 2015. Two playlists, "paris flight" and "paris_return," appear to be named for trips to and from Paris, where Epstein owned an apartment and frequently traveled via private jet. "Paris flight" features a number of classic rock stalwarts like Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, The Who, and The Doors. "Paris_return," by contrast, is heavy on blues and jazz.   </p><p>Other playlists focus on Elton John, classical music, Broadway tunes, the jazz artist Oscar Peterson, and the rapper Pitbull. Elsewhere, you can find Eric Clapton's "Before You Accuse Me"; Christian singer Morris Chapman's "Falling in Love with Jesus"; Van Halen's "Hot for Teacher"; and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/louis-ck-performed-for-first-time-since-admitting-sexual-misconduct-2018-8">disgraced comic Louis C.K.</a>'s album "Hilarious."</p><p>Jazz artist Oscar Peterson and his band take the top spot by number of songs on Epstein's playlists - 188 songs. Ludwig van Beethoven, with 130 songs, is the second artist by song count, followed by Céline Dion with 108. Epstein has been publicly linked to two women named Celina. One, Celina Midelfart, is a Norwegian businesswoman who dated Donald Trump. She was on Epstein's private plane a number of times in 1996 and 1997, according to flight records made public on Friday, but has not been publicly tied to him since then. </p><p>The other is 24-year-old Celina Dubin, who four sources described as Epstein's goddaughter. Her parents, Glenn and Eva Dubin, were longtime friends of Epstein; her mother dated him in the 1980s. (A spokesperson for the family denies that Epstein was her godfather.) The billionaire family flew on Epstein's planes many times between 1995 and 2005, according to flight logs that run up to 2008. After Epstein was released from jail in 2008, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/prominent-hedge-fund-family-had-epstein-for-thanksgiving-after-jail-2019-7">the family maintained ties with him</a>, even inviting him to a large Thanksgiving dinner in 2009.</p><p>That same year, when Epstein wanted to contribute to Eva Dubin's breast-cancer organization, he understood that a public donation from a registered sex offender might not be welcome, Business Insider <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/prominent-hedge-fund-family-had-epstein-for-thanksgiving-after-jail-2019-7">previously reported</a>. Eva established a new nonprofit, called the Celina Dubin United Fund, to receive $50,000 from Epstein and donate to her and other medical organizations. The foundation was wound down in 2013. A source familiar with the matter said Celina Dubin was not aware of the arrangement. </p><p>One woman that Epstein paid to give him erotic massages in the 2000s <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dubin-familys-ties-to-epstein-included-a-massage-referral-2019-8">told Business Insider</a> that Epstein had referred her to the Dubins as well, although she says the massage she gave the couple was not sexual in nature. A former employee for the couple <a href="https://www.thedailybeast.com/jeffrey-epstein-scandal-butler-for-glenn-and-eva-dubin-says-swedish-teen-told-him-she-was-pressured-for-sex">said in recently unsealed deposition testimony</a> that he spoke to a Swedish girl in the Dubin's kitchen who said she was 15 years old and had been asked for sex while working as Epstein's personal assistant, and was threatened when she refused. (She didn't say who had asked for sex.) The former employee said the girl later worked for the Dubins as a nanny for several weeks.</p><p>Through a spokesperson, the Dubin's denied the former employee's claims: "Glenn and Eva Dubin are outraged by the allegations in the unsealed court records, which are demonstrably false and defamatory. The Dubins have flight records and other evidence that definitively disprove that any such events occurred." </p><p>The family now says that they regret their relationship with Epstein and if they had known of the new allegations, they would have cut all ties to him. They thought he had rehabilitated himself after jail and "deserved a second chance."  </p><p>Epstein's other music interests seem to include musicians Phil Collins, Michael Jackson, and Mick Jagger, who appeared in his "black book," a list of contacts obtained by Gawker in 2015. Michael Jackson is the only artist of the three to appear on Epstein's Spotify playlists. </p><p><em>With additional reporting by J.K. We found Jeffrey Epstein's social media accounts. On Spotify, his tastes ranged from Louis C.K. to songs like 'Before You Accuse Me' and 'Hot for Teacher.'

<p>It's for that reason, private Swiss bank accounts are popularly seen as belonging to only tax dodgers and, well, Swiss nationals.</p>
<p>Indeed, when <a href="http://www.icij.org/project/swiss-leaks/banking-giant-hsbc-sheltered-murky-cash-linked-dictators-and-arms-dealers#_ga=1.52487584.902867380.1423441000">newly leaked HSBC documents named musicians David Bowie, Phil Collins and Tina Turner</a> as being tied to Swiss bank accounts, it wasn't a big deal because all three are actually legal residents of Switzerland or living in Switzerland.</p>
<p>But the story's a tiny bit less clear for actor John Malkovich, fashion designer Diane Von Fürstenberg, and soccer star Diego Forlán.</p>
<p>On Sunday, the Washington-based <a href="http://www.icij.org/project/swiss-leaks">International Consortium of Investigative Journalists</a> along with news outlets the Guardian, the French daily Le Monde, BBC Panorama, and CBS's 60 Minutes published what they found in HSBC's Swiss private bank documents <a href="http://www.icij.org/project/swiss-leaks/whistleblower-thief-hero-introducing-source-data-shook-hsbc#_ga=1.87008528.902867380.1423441000">stolen and leaked by whistleblower Hervé Falciani</a>. The journalists conclude that among other things, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/hsbcs-shady-swiss-banking-arm-2015-2">HSBC's Swiss private banking arm helped clients evade taxes</a>. The leaked files date 2005-2007.</p>
<p>Without establishing any clear connection to illegal activity, the journalists went ahead and revealed the names of a bunch of celebrities whose names appeared.</p>
<p>Here's a summary of names and what the journalists found:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>John Malcovich (actor)</strong>: "Hollywood actor John Malkovich, for instance, said through a representative that he knows nothing about an account listing his name and conjectured that it might have to do with Bernard Madoff, the former stockbroker convicted of fraud who handled some of his finances."</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Joan Collins (actress)</strong>: "A representative for the British actress Joan Collins told ICIJ: 'In 1993 my client deposited funds into a bank account in London and subsequently discovered that, without her instructions, the money had been transferred to the Swiss account referred to in your letter.' The representative added that no tax was avoided."</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Christian Slater (actor)</strong>: "Christian Michael Slater was linked to an HSBC client account named "Captain Kirk," after the Star Trek character. It was opened in 1996 and closed in 1997. The account listed two postal addresses: one in the United States, associated with ERNST &amp; YOUNG LLP, and one in the United Kingdom. The leaked files do not specify the exact role Slater had in relation to the account."</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Diane Von Fürstenberg (fashion designer)</strong>: "Diane Von Fürstenberg's was linked to four HSBC client accounts: two numbered that were opened in 1988 and later closed in 1996 and 2002. There was another account under the name "Thunderbird Investments Ltd," in which she showed up as beneficial owner, opened in 1994 and closed in 2002 and one account for "Licom Ltd," where at one point she was listed as "Attorney B." Two family members were also linked to the client account. Her mother was listed as beneficial owner of the account and then stricken. "Licom Ltd" listed seven bank accounts that together held as much as $6,268,217 in 2006/2007 ... A spokeswoman told ICIJ that von Fürstenberg inherited Thunderbird Investments Ltd. from her parents, who were not American tax residents, and that she never received anything from Licom Ltd. Von Fürstenberg 'made all necessary US tax filings and insisted that the assets be domesticated to the United States more than 10 years ago.'"</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Diego Forlán (soccer player)</strong>: "Diego Forlán became an HSBC client in 2006, while he was playing in Spain for Villarreal. He was connected to two client accounts that together listed four bank accounts. Two of them were associated with the account Rosario Trading Company S.A where he was listed as "Attorney C," and two were associated to numbered account 12661 ZDF. Together the accounts held as much as $1.4 million in 2006/2007. The leaked files do not specify the exact role that Forlán had in relation to the numbered account."</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>Elle MacPherson (model)</strong>: "Elle MacPherson was connected to seven HSBC client accounts. She was beneficial owner of five of them. The other two, under the names of "Elle MacPherson Capital A/C" and "Elle MacPherson income A/C" do not specify the exact role that she had in relation to the accounts. The four client accounts still operative in 2008 were linked to 25 bank accounts that together held as much as $12.2 million in 2006/2007. Three of the accounts for which she was the beneficial owner were closed in 2000, 2001 and 2004."</p>
<p>It's quite possible that all of these celebrities' accounts were legit and legal.</p>

David Bowie, Diane Von Furstenberg, Diego Forlan, and other famous names that appeared in HSBC's Swiss bank leak

<p><a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/ubs-tax-evasion-scandal-update-2015-2">UBS finally confirmed that it is under investigation by the US authorities</a>, again, for helping rich Americans to evade taxes. It already stumped up £512 million in 2009 to settle a tax evasion probe.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, HSBC is suffering from a serious financial data dump by whistleblower Herve Falciani, which resulted in the leakage of thousands of clients bank account details and <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/hsbc-tax-avoidance-scandal-2015-2#ixzz3RLqfbuYV">millions of pounds recuperated in tax.</a></p>
<p>So how does the Swiss banking system work?</p>
<h3><strong>How to get a bank account</strong></h3>
<p>Setting up a secret Swiss and Luxembourg based bank account isn't as tricky as you may think. As with all bank accounts, you fill in forms and provide identification.</p>
<p>However, as one former private banker detailed, the level of scrutiny over identification over the last decade and significantly changed.</p>
<p><span>"In the late '90s it took only a couple of sheets of A4 to register a new account," <span>Jay Vaananen, who anonymously<strong> </strong>wrote about the secretive world of private banking for years, told Business Insider <keyword id="6354868" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="UK">UK</keyword>.</span></span></p>
<p><span>"By 2005-2007, the amount of paperwork increased to around 10 sheets but by today's standards, you need to go through around 100 pages."</span></p>
<p><span>Due to the level of secrecy around the Swiss and Luxembourg banking industry, the scrutiny over identification is a lot tougher than it used to be. If you notice, the UBS and HSBC data and subsequent investigations all centre on the pre-credit crisis period and mainly in the early 2000s.</span></p>
<p>"I believe when HSBC says things are different now, because the industry has massively changed since 20 years ago. The attitude has dramatically changed from that time toward banks and tax accountancy. Banks are scared sick of inadvertently falling foul of regulators."</p>
<h3><strong>What does a 'secret' bank account get you?</strong></h3>
<p>Unlike regular bank accounts, Swiss ones use numbers and not names. Under law, bankers do not have disclose the existence of an account, who it belongs to, or any other information, without your explicit permission or in very special circumstances.</p>
<p>This secrecy extends to the banks' own directors.</p>
<p>"People forget that in Switzerland and Luxembourg, where I previously worked, the secrecy laws around banking are so strict that even other units within the same lender would not be privy to the information under the Swiss or Lux unit," says <span>Vaananen.</span></p>
<p>"Even if you sat on the board of directors at the parent group, unless you sat on the board of directors of the Swiss or Lux unit, you would not have information relating to the activities or clients at that bank. You'd only have overall profit figures and so forth."</p>
<p>While Stephen Green, the CEO of HSBC bank group from 2006 and 2010, has not commented on the Swiss bank account data leak, the UK government is calling for him to give evidence.</p>
<p>Considering he was also <a href="http://www.hsbc.co.uk/1/PA_esf-ca-app-content/content/uk/pdfs/en/annual_results_2005_3.pdf">chairman of HSBC Private Banking Holdings (Suisse) though</a>, he could face a tough grilling.</p>
<h3><strong>What do private bankers do for you?</strong></h3>
<p>Private bankers are there to invest your money and seek out the more effective way in reaping in high returns for the wealthy. They don't sort out your tax returns, that's what accountants are for.</p>
<p>"The job of the private wealth banker is, of course, to invest clients money and deliver as favourable returns as possible. Banks did not care whether its client was declaring tax in its home country, that was the responsibility of the client's accountant. The clients tax status was irrelevant outside Switzerland," says <span>Vaananen.</span></p>
<p>"This is not to say that banks were not aware of clients' tax issues. From the Birkenfield leaked information, there were times when UBS bankers had allegedly smuggled diamonds in <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/20/business/20tax.html?_r=0">toothpaste tubes to avoid the IRS.</a>"</p>
<h3><strong>Why everyone follows the US regulators' lead</strong></h3>
<p>The HSBC scandal has landed on a variety of European government's doorsteps but, usually, they follow the US' lead in investigating and prosecuting firms and individuals.</p>
<p>The tax rules across different countries are horrendously complex. However, the <a href="http://www.fincen.gov/statutes_regs/bsa/">US Bank Secrecy Act of 1970</a> and the <a href="http://www.fincen.gov/statutes_regs/patriot/">USA Patriot Act</a> actively helps the country to break down the walls in order to penalise serial tax evaders.</p>
<p>"Putting the moral element aside, you have to remember that leaking the private Swiss bank account information <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/importance-of-swiss-bank-document-leak-2015-2">in the manner that Herve Falciani did</a> was a criminal act. This can make it difficult, from a legal standpoint, to use in evidence is various jurisdictions<span>," says Vaananen.</span></p>
<p><span>"</span>The US has become the stepping stone for for European regulators to launch investigations into several banks. <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Only the US has the real muscle and success is striking deals with the banks over a variety of financial scandals, especially tax evasion and avoidance."</span></p>
<p><a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/belgium-considers-arrest-warrant-against-hsbc-switzerland-directors-2015-2">Belgium is mulling over whether to issue arrest warrants</a> for directors for the Swiss division of the bank. France said it would like to see a coordinated European effort when it launches its investigation into the lender.</p>
<p>In the UK, the latest comment from Britain's taxman shows how domestic regulators sometimes are seen to be 'asleep at the wheel.'</p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"We received the data under an international treaty agreement with France, which had tight restrictions. We couldn't move it outside the department; we could only use it for tax evasion purposes," said an HMRC spokesperson when the BBC asked about why it did not notify the Financial Conduct Authority of the HSBC investigation.</span></p>

How secret Swiss banking works

<p>FIRST, you realise it's a gorilla. The opening strains of Phil Collins's "In the Air Tonight" are playing; the beast is enraptured. As the camera pulls back, you see that he's seated at a drum kit. He flexes, raises his drumsticks, then brings them resoundingly down. Only in the final frames do you discover that the gorilla is pitching Cadbury's Dairy Milk chocolate.</p>
<p>The advert, released in 2007, should not have worked. Conventional wisdom doubted that a jolt of joy from a drumming primate, however rhythmically gifted, would spur sales of chocolate bars. A member of the team that developed the ad says that when it was passed to Millward Brown, the world's biggest tester of adverts, the firm found that it scored poorly among women on its measures of "awareness" and "brand appeal" and about average among men (Millward Brown says it did better on other measures). Yet Cadbury went ahead, and was rewarded with millions of online views, better perceptions of its brand and higher sales. Return on investment was three times the average for packaged-goods marketing campaigns.</p>
<p>Behind Cadbury's simian success was an unlikely inspiration: Daniel Kahneman, a psychologist who won a Nobel Prize in 2002 for showing that people are not the rational agents that economists had thought they were. He argues, most famously in "Thinking, Fast and Slow", a 2011 book popularising his work, that the mind (human, that is, not gorilla) incorporates two systems: an intuitive "system one", which makes many decisions automatically, and a calculating but lazy "system two", which rationalises system one's ideas and sometimes overrules them. For Mr Kahneman's disciples <keyword id="35666" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="advertising">advertising</keyword> is above all a way to groom system one, to nudge consumers towards a buy.</p>

<p>Kahnemanite advertising prizes emotion over information and pays more attention to a brand's "purpose" than to its products. It exploits system one's propensity to react to subtle cues. In a print advert for a Betty Crocker pie, a version with the fork placed on the right triggered a 20% higher "purchase intent" than one with the fork on the left (because most people eat with their right hands). This demands not just new ways of making adverts but new methods for judging if they will work. Researchers must "laser in on measuring emotion as almost the single metric" that predicts success, says John Kearon of BrainJuicer, a market-research firm.</p>
<p>This season's crop of televisual tear-jerkers reflects such thinking. A sweaty game of wheelchair basketball ends with all the players but one walking out of the gym. "The choices we make reveal the true nature of our character," intones the voice-over, in the hope that one of those choices will be to drink Guinness stout. In the gauzy Christmas offering of Britain's Royal Mail, posties of many colours deliver parcels in all weathers, accompanied by an a cappella rendition of the Beatles' "All You Need is Love".</p>
<p>Of course, admen were aiming at system one long before they had heard of it: "sex sells" is one of the oldest mottos in the business, after all. Even information-packed adverts that seem to be appealing to reason are really playing on emotions, points out Mr Kahneman, who does not give advice to marketers.</p>
<p>His followers are inclined to dispense with system two altogether. Marketers at Procter &amp; Gamble, maker of Tide detergent and Pampers nappies, were trained to get across the "single benefit" that a product would give its purchaser, says Jim Stengel, a former marketing chief at the firm, now a consultant. "There was not a whole lot of recognition of emotional connection with a brand or company." But that has changed. P&amp;G's tribute to athletes' mothers during last year's Olympics was aimed directly at the syrupy soul of system one.</p>
<p>Rare is the marketer today who does not spout systemic terminology, but there are disagreements over how to divine what system one is feeling, and over the role of system two. In testing an advert before it goes to market, BrainJuicer asks subjects to say which of eight faces, each expressing a different emotion, best reflects the feeling it arouses and how intense it is. The firm tested the gorilla advert after its release. It scored the highest emotional-intensity marks (viewers felt happiness and surprise) of any advert to that point.</p>
<p>Decode, a rival, uses "implicit association", in which subjects associate images (say of a chocolate bar) with concepts (perhaps "comfort") and their reactions are timed. The faster the response, the deeper the link between the two. Decode, acting independently of Cadbury, found that the gorilla advert conjured up "security" and "enjoyment" better than a less-popular successor involving drag-racing trucks, which had unchocolatey overtones of "adventure" (see diagram).</p>
<p>Some say the most telling signals are biological. Neuro-Insight, an Australian outfit, monitors electrical activity in viewers' brains. When viewers watched the Cadbury advert, signals that suggested images were being stored in long-term memory peaked three times: when subjects recognised a gorilla, when they saw the drums and, encouragingly for Cadbury, when the brand appeared.</p>
<p>Everyone gangs up on Millward Brown, perhaps in part because its losses could be their gains. Its surveys tease out such things as how "engaging" an advert is by asking viewers to answer a series of questions, a system-two task that masks system one's reactions, say critics. Admen resent its emphasis on "persuasion", which predicts short-term sales but seems deadeningly rational. For such "creatives", permission to pack a purely emotional wallop feels liberating.</p>
<p>Millward Brown has always probed for emotional responses, insists Graham Page, its head of consumer neuroscience. People are aware of their feelings, so it is legitimate to discover them by asking questions. The new biometric techniques are useful for finding out how people came to feel as they do. Mr Page says Millward Brown has worked more with them than any other firm.</p>
<p>Furthermore, he says, do not underrate system two. It usually interacts with the system-one response to reach a decision. That is why passengers overcome their reflexive aversion to some budget airlines; guided by hard-headed system two, they buy the cheap tickets. Still, Mr Page admits, researchers used to focus too much on thinking. Now Millward Brown is as keen as anyone to plumb consumers' instincts.</p>
<p>There is an irony in this. Most readers of Mr Kahneman's bestseller will end up mistrusting system one for its propensity to mislead. Not marketing folk. System one craves chocolate.</p>

Advertising: Nothing More Than Feelings

<p>After eating dinner with his wife, Kelly, and getting their 8-month-old twin boys ready for bed, Jacobs leaves his Sunnyside, N.Y., apartment and heads into Manhattan on the 7 train. <span>"One thing I love about working in this business is that I get to spend the entire day with my family," he tells Business Insider.</span></p>
<p>He typically arrives at work - the New Amsterdam Theatre in the heart of New York's Times Square - between 6:30 and 7 p.m., and immediately grabs a coffee and some fruit. Then, he says, he "<em>really</em> gets to work."</p>
<p><span>Jacobs plays the lead part in Disney</span><span>'</span><span>s </span><span>"</span><span>Aladdin</span><span>"</span><span> the musical, which premiered on Broadway in March 2014. <span>Prior to landing this role, he starred in "Les Miserables," "Mama Mia!" and "The Lion King."</span></span></p>
<p>Each night before the performance, Jacobs squeezes in a light workout.</p>
<p>"I have to be pretty naked in the show," he jokes. "It's important that I maintain my look. So when I first get to the theater, sometimes I'll stop in the New York Sports Club that's across the street from the stage door and warm up for 15 minutes. Or, if I'm feeling 'warm' enough, I'll just come into my dressing room and do some asymmetric exercises. I have a whole mini gym set up in there, with dumbbells and TheraBands, and other equipment like that," he explains.</p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">After a quick workout and a brief juggling session - "it's a form of meditation for me," he says - Jacobs begins making his daily transformation into his character, Aladdin.  </span></p>

"Sometimes I have a little time before they come in, so I'll play something like 'American Ninja Warrior' on my TV in my dressing room just to get into the 'one jump' mood. Or I'll have the TV on the ESPN channel on mute."</p>
<p>Once he's in costume, Jacobs heads down to the "deck" to hang out with his costars, including Courtney Reed, who plays Jasmine, and Tony-away winning performer James Monroe Iglehart, who plays the Genie.</p>
<p>"Usually everyone is warming up and stretching. We greet each other and ask how everyone's days were. Sometimes I'll go visit other people's dressing rooms before going down. And then at 8:00 or 8:05, the downbeat starts."</p>
<p><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Jacobs has been performing his whole life. The Half Moon Bay, California, native starting playing the piano at age 5, and shifted his focus to musical theater in middle school - but every time he hears the downbeat (the music that plays at the start of every show) Jacobs still gets a "little flutter" in his stomach.</span></p>
<p>"But I like that, because it tells me that I'm excited," he says. "I get nervous when I'm <em>not </em>nervous."</p>
<p>Jacobs says those butterflies, combined with the knowledge that there are 1,700 people in the audience - some who have never seen the show, and young kids who are seeing a Broadway musical for the very first time - is what gives him energy each night. "I don't want to disappoint anyone. That's what motivates me to do my best."</p>

<p>"I know it's silly to say, but I really love when things go wrong," he tells Business Insider. "When you do a show eight times a week, in order for it to not feel rote, you sometimes have to think of moments in the show and do something different with them, just to keep it fresh. And sometimes people will screw up a line and they'll have to improvise something. Even though this is Broadway, it happens. But that's what makes it exciting."</p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Luckily, he says, these mistakes are trivial and the audience rarely notices. But he recalls one gaffe that </span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">was "less funny and more embarrassing."</span></p>
<p>During the show, Jacobs has a quick change. "At one point, Genie says 'You're a prince,' and as 'Aladdin the street rat,' with the Fez and all that, I spin around and I'm suddenly in this white outfit with a white turban and a big cape. One time early on, I sang the whole number and upon getting off stage, I realized that my fly was completely down. So I'm singing the big Act I number and one of the lines is, 'Look at me! I can't believe it! Look at me!' And I'm thinking, 'Oh wow, they were definitely looking.' So that was kind of embarrassing."</p>

<p>During intermission, Jacobs makes a quick costume change into "Prince Ali." "Sometimes Courtney (Jasmine) will come in to hang out, and we'll talk about fashion, because she likes to talk about that. We have a very brother/sister-like relationship. We're very competitive with one another - but it's fun."</p>
<p>He says he'll also eat a few more pieces of fruit during the break. "I like mangos and papayas and apples. Courtney jokes that I am just like Aladdin because I eat a lot of apples, which is actually kind of true, and pretty funny."<span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p>
<p><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">After the second act of the show, which usually ends around 10:30 p.m., Jacobs gets out of costume, wipes off his makeup, and greets fans.</span></p>
<p><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">If celebrities are at the show, he'll sometimes stay in costume to take photos. "Aladdin is the hot new show in town, so we have a lot of high-profile people come see it. We've had Paul Stanley, Phil Collins, Whoppi Goldberg, and Meredith Vieira, just to name a few. Sometimes during the show you'll look out and say, 'Oh my God, I recognize that face!'"<span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></span></p>
<p><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">He says the very best part of the job is greeting the fans at the stage door as he leaves, "because we have people who loved the movie, and people who are seeing a Broadway show for the first time, and it's people from little kids up to grandparents. Just to meet the fans and see the impact that we have on them is so fulfilling for me."</span></p>

<p><span>"It's so fun to look out at them and see their enraptured faces," Jacobs says. "People don't realize that we can see them sometimes; it's almost like they think they're watching TV. But if you actually look at them, like if they're on their phone or something and then they look up and make eye contact, they usually look like a deer in the headlights and they put it away. Or you'll see couples making out. I've seen all kinds of crazy stuff!" The best, though, is seeing smiles from the audience, and kids singing along, he explains.</span></p>
<p>"There's nothing else like the theater because it's a live experience. And when you have that connection between the audience and the actors on stage, it's electric. And that's sort of what got me hooked to it when I was a kid."</p>
<p>He says that excitement gives him an adrenaline high that takes time to come down from.</p>
<p>After greeting fans, Jacobs hops into a cab or walks to the subway and heads home. "I need time to unwind after a show. I can't just go home and go to sleep."</p>
<p>When he arrives home, he's usually hungry again. "Everyone is asleep in my house, so I'll usually make myself a big meal - maybe some salad and some chicken - then I'll watch Jimmy Fallon or I'll just stay up for a little bit on the computer. Sometimes I'll watch something on Netflix, or play some games on my phone, like Words With Friends. And I actually play chess. Sometimes I'll even go into the neighborhood and play chess with the guys around here, and it's kind of a nerdy thing, but I learned from my dad how to play, and now it's a hobby." <span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">He says he tries to get to bed by 1 a.m.</span></p>
<p>Jacobs' post-show routine has changed since his sons, Jack and Alex, were born in January - coincidentally on the first day of rehearsal for "Aladdin."</p>
<p>"In previous shows, I used to hang out with my cast mates more, but now I usually just come home," he says. "If it's a Sunday when we do an earlier show, I might hang out for a little bit afterwards. <p>He says his wife wakes up with their boys around 6:30 a.m. and after their first nap, she'll bring them in to wake Jacobs up.</p>
<p>"It's really cute," he says. "I love seeing them in the morning, and they're just trying to crawl on me."<span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p>
<p>After getting out of bed, Jacobs makes breakfast (cereal and eggs) for he and his wife. "We have nice mornings. We eat, play with the babies, put them down for a nap, and then maybe clean the house, do laundry, and pay bills. And when it's nice out, we'll go for a walk."<span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p>
<p>After dinner and getting the boys ready for bed, he does it all over again.</p>

<p>Being a Broadway star can be physically exhausting, he says ("It's like running a marathon every week!"), but the job offers a healthy work-life balance.</p>
<p>"It's nice because I have pretty much the whole day with my family and to get stuff done," he explains. "If I had a typical 9-5 job, the boys would be going to bed right after I got home, and I wouldn't necessarily have the time to spend with my family."</p>
<p>He says when a show first opens, his free time is more limited, but "once all the press dies down from Tony's and all that, and once we're sort of settled in the show, I can spend a lot of time with my wife and kids and it's wonderful."</p>
