Toxicology experts will soon train doctors working in Primary Health Centres (PHCs) and district hospitals in <keyword id="13126" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="maharashtra" source="Orion">Maharashtra</keyword> and other places in the country about the protocols for diagnosis and treatment of farmers exposed to chemicals and pesticides, a medical expert has said. Toxicology as a subject is quite neglected in the medical curriculum, Dr Tejas Prajapati, a clinical medical toxicologist at the LG Hospital in Ahmedabad, said at a press conference on Wednesday after a symposium on 'Occupational health hazards in agriculture' held at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (<keyword id="40458" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="aiims" source="Orion">AIIMS</keyword>), Nagpur. Doctors at the PHCs are the first contact in the case of a patient exposed to pesticides and chemicals. They are already loaded with various other medical programmes and works and a case of such a medical emergency is immediately sent to higher centres and the "<keyword id="2284670" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="golden-period" source="Orion">golden period</keyword>" is lost, he noted. Toxicology experts to train PHC doctors on protocols to treat farmers exposed to chemicals & pesticides

The <keyword id="6356311" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="world-health-organisation" source="Orion">World Health Organisation</keyword> has called for increased access to quality diabetes education for healthcare workers and people living with diabetes as part of efforts to achieve access for all to quality, affordable diabetes care, on the occasion of World Diabetes Day. According to Dr Poonam <keyword id="811088" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="khetrapal" source="Orion">Khetrapal</keyword> Singh, WHO Regional Director for South-East Asia, around 422 million people have diabetes, and 1.5 million deaths are directly attributed to diabetes every year around the world. "In the WHO South-East Asia Region, more than 96 million people are estimated to have diabetes, and another 96 million to be pre-diabetic, causing at least 600 000 deaths annually. By 2045, unless urgent action is taken, the prevalence of diabetes in the Region is expected to increase by 68 per cent," Dr Poonam Khetrapal said. She highlighted the seriousness of Diabetes and said that if detected late, or improperly managed, can lead to serious and life-threatening damage to the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys and nerves. She also laid down the methods to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. "The risk of type 2 diabetes can be reduced through regular and adequate physical activity, healthy eating, and avoiding tobacco and the harmful use of alcohol. If developed, type 2 diabetes can be managed through medication, control of blood pressure and lipids, and adherence to a healthy lifestyle. Type 1 diabetes, which affects more than 250 000 children and adolescents in the Region, cannot currently be prevented but can be managed. For people living with both types of diabetes, access to affordable treatment - including insulin - is critical to their survival," <keyword id="15514594" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="dr-khetrapal" source="Orion">Dr Khetrapal</keyword> said. According to Dr Khetrapal, the region continues to take targeted action to address diabetes, in line with its Flagship Priorities on preventing and controlling noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) and achieving universal health coverage (<keyword id="57852" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="uhc" source="Orion">UHC</keyword>), as well as its recently adopted Implementation <keyword id="53329" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="roadmap" source="Orion">Roadmap</keyword> on NCD prevention and control 2022-2030. "Almost all countries now have in place standardized treatment guidelines for diabetes and must provide at least one hypoglycemic drug at the primary health care (PHC) level. Across the Region, the WHO HEARTS-D technical package is supporting PHC personnel to diagnose, treat and manage diabetes, accelerating Region-wide efforts to reorient health systems - including NCD care - to the PHC level," she said. According to Dr Khetrapal, in 2021, amid the COVID-19 response, WHO supported the delivery of insulin donations to Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Timor-Leste, alongside 45 other low- and middle-income countries globally. "The Region is currently on track to achieve a 30 per cent relative reduction in tobacco use prevalence between 2010 and 2025, and last year launched a Regional Roadmap on implementing the Global Action Plan on Physical Activity 2018-2030. The Roadmap will help Member States achieve a 15 per cent relative reduction in the prevalence of insufficient physical activity by 2030, which will, in turn, help them to reduce expected increases in new diabetes cases," she said. Dr Khetrapal said that it is calling for action in several key areas including the setting up of time-bound targets to address gaps in service coverage. "First, policymakers should set time-bound targets to address gaps in service coverage, with a focus on equity and leaving no one behind. Second, high-impact, cost-effective and context-appropriate interventions must continue to be identified and implemented. For this, the Global Diabetes Compact, launched in April 2021, calls for targeted efforts to enhance community empowerment and increase private sector engagement," Dr Khetrapal said. "Third, policymakers should continue to strengthen PHC service delivery, ensuring that diabetes screening and care are available, accessible, acceptable, and of adequate quality, without discrimination, accelerating momentum from the 2016 Colombo Declaration," Dr Khetrapal said. The official added that the countries must continue to promote access to essential medicines and priority devices, including insulin, in national benefit packages - a key focus of the Region's Flagship Priority on UHC. Mysterious illness strikes Andhra Pradesh: After Eluru, nearly 24 cases emerge in Pulla village

Pregnant women, who received one of the mRNA Covid-19 vaccines, had 10-fold higher antibody concentrations than those who were naturally infected with Covid virus, a finding that was also observed in their babies, according to a new study. The study by researchers at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and the <keyword id="83492" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="university-of-pennsylvania" source="Orion">University of Pennsylvania</keyword> in the US, published in JAMA Network Open, also found that vaccine timing played an important role in maximising the transfer of antibodies, with antibodies detected as early as 15 days after the first vaccine dose and increasing for several weeks after. "These findings suggest that vaccination not only provides robust protection for mothers during pregnancy, it also provides higher concentrations of antibodies to babies than Covid infection," said Dustin D. Flannery, an attending neonatologist at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and Assistant Professor of Paediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania. "Given that pregnancy is a risk factor for severe Covid-19, this study suggests pregnant people should prioritise getting vaccinated to protect themselves and their babies," Flannery added. Of the 585 pregnancies, the team identified 169 patients who had been vaccinated but never infected and 408 who had been infected but not vaccinated. They found that antibody levels among vaccine recipients were approximately 10- times higher than in people who had been naturally infected. The researchers detected <keyword id="904927" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="igg" source="Orion">IgG</keyword> antibodies to the SARS-CoV-2 virus in the cord blood of more than 95 per cent of newborns (557 of 585) in the study. Covid vax leads to higher antibody levels in pregnant women, babies

New Delhi, Jun 23 () Seventeen employees of a security agency employed at Maruti Suzuki India's (MSI) Manesar (Haryana) plant have disappeared after testing positive for COVID-19. The employees, who belong to security agency SIS India, had tested positive for the infectious disease on June 17 and were supposed to be quarantined as per the law. An FIR has now been lodged at Industrial Sector-7, Manesar against the missing employees and their manager for the disappearing act. As per the FIR lodged by the government doctor posted at PHC Bhangrola, Gurugram, the workers tested positive for COVID-19 on June 17, and their manager was informed on the same day about their status. The manager informed the health authorities that the workers have been quarantined and were asymptomatic, as per the FIR. "But when our medical team reached the site on June 18, all these 17 patients have already left without any information. This is for your information and action to be taken as per Disaster Management Act," the FIR read. When contacted, a MSI spokesperson confirmed the incident. "The people in question who tested positive are not Maruti Suzuki employees. They are outsourced/contractual vigilance staff deputed with the company," the spokesperson told . The company is following all the government guidelines and directives and will extend all assistance and cooperation wherever required, the spokesperson added. MSI, however, did not say if the production at the plant has been impacted because of employees involved in security process turning out to be COVID-19 positive. Comments from SIS India could not be obtained immediately. Last month, MSI had reported one coronavirus case at the Manesar plant. The auto major had resumed operations at Manesar plan in May after around 50 days of closure due to the coronavirus-induced lockdown. The facility produces high selling models like Alto, Swift, Dzire, S-Presso, Ertiga and Baleno. The company's other plant at Gurugram rolls out models like S-Cross, Vitara Brezza, Ignis and Super Carry light commercial vehicle. The Manesar and Gurugram plants have a combined installed capacity to churn out over 15.5 lakh vehicles per annum. Benjamin Dixon, a podcaster, on Monday tweeted a clip of Bloomberg defending the stop-and-frisk program in 2015. In the clip, which quickly went viral, Bloomberg could be heard condoning blatant racial profiling by police. "Ninety-five percent of your murders - murderers and murder victims - fit one M.O.," Bloomberg said in the recording. "You can just take the description, Xerox it and pass it out to all the cops. They are male, minorities, 16 to 25. That's true in New York, that's true in virtually every every city.""We put all the cops in minority neighborhoods. Yes. That's true. Why do we do it? Because that's where all the crime is. And the way you get the guns out of the kids' hands is to throw them up against the walls and frisk them," Bloomberg added. The remarks are seemingly from an Aspen Institute event Bloomber spoke at in February 2015. Bloomberg's representatives asked the Aspen Institute not to air the footage of his comments, the Aspen Times <a href="https://www.aspentimes.com/news/michael-bloomberg-blocks-footage-of-aspen-institute-appearance/">reported later that month.</a><h2>The Trump campaign went after Bloomberg on stop-and-frisk, even though the president has been a vocal supporter of the practice</h2>As the clip went viral on Tuesday alongside the hashtag #BloombergIsARacist, Trump and his campaign manager, Brad Parscale, joined in. In a tweet that was quickly deleted, Trump on Tuesday morning said, "WOW, BLOOMBERG IS A TOTAL RACIST." Meanwhile, Parscale in a tweet decried the video as <a href="https://twitter.com/parscale/status/1227216752376979456?s=20">"horrible"</a> and Bloomberg as a "racist," questioning whether Bloomberg Politics would write that "their boss is a complete racist." The Trump campaign has barred Bloomberg News from events due to its policy of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-campaign-bans-bloomberg-news-2020-events-citing-bias-2019-12">not investigating the former New York City mayor and billionaire,</a> who owns the publication. But, in the past, Trump was a vocal proponent of stop-and-frisk. "I would do stop-and-frisk. I think you have to. Between now and November, I will do everything I can to defeat you whether I am on the ballot or not."The Trump campaign's <a href="https://twitter.com/TimMurtaugh/status/1227231557057949696?s=20">increase in attacks</a> on Bloomberg came as a new <a href="https://poll.qu.edu/national/release-detail?ReleaseID=3655">Quinnipiac poll</a> from Monday showed him in third among 2020 Democrats, despite his decision to skip the early voting states - including the New Hampshire primary on Tuesday. <h2>Bloomberg has apologized for stop-and-frisk, which was deemed unconstitutional by a federal judge</h2>The former New York City mayor, who is now running for the 2020 Democratic nomination, apologized for stop-and-frisk shortly before he hopped in the presidential race in November. "I was wrong," Bloomberg <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/11/17/us/politics/michael-bloomberg-speech.html">said</a> in mid-November. "And I am sorry."Stop-and-frisk has been widely decried as racist and <a href="https://www.aclu.org/blog/criminal-law-reform/reforming-police/president-trump-stop-and-frisk-both-unconstitutional-and">ineffective</a>. In 2013, a federal judge deemed the practice as unconstitutional and a <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2013/08/13/nyregion/stop-and-frisk-practice-violated-rights-judge-rules.html">"policy of indirect racial profiling."</a>In New York City, the stop-and-frisk program empowered police to detain and question people on the street and elsewhere if they were suspected of a crime. Black and Latino people were <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/13/nyregion/13frisk.html">disproportionately targeted</a> under this policy, which did not begin under Bloomberg but accelerated during his tenure - police recorded <a href="https://twitter.com/nytimes/status/1196192557191122950?s=20">over five million stops</a> while he was in office. Defenders of stop-and-frisk contended it prevented crime, but evidence suggests otherwise. The policy was essentially abandoned under Mayor Bill de Blasio, with stops <a href="https://www.nyclu.org/sites/default/files/field_documents/20190314_nyclu_stopfrisk_singles.pdf">decreasing 76%</a> in his first term. Though there was an increase in murders in 2019 from 2018, the city has still seen historically low crime levels since moving away from stop-and-frisk.
