The Indian pharmaceuticals industry is expected to log in a revenue growth of 8-10 per cent in current fiscal aided by a steady domestic growth and increased exports to regulated markets, even as semi-regulated markets face headwinds, according to a report. A study of 186 drug makers, which accounted for about half of the Rs 3.7 lakh crore annual revenue of the sector last fiscal, indicates as much, <keyword id="6359483" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="crisil" source="Orion">Crisil</keyword> said on Monday. "Similar to last fiscal, domestic growth in fiscal 2024, will be led by 5-6 per cent increase in realisations, supported partly by high price hikes allowed by the <keyword id="390804" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="national-pharmaceutical-pricing-authority" source="Orion">National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority</keyword> (NPPA) for drugs under price regulation," Crisil Research Director <keyword id="13891160" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="aniket-dani" source="Orion">Aniket Dani</keyword> said. In addition, sale of existing drugs and new launches will drive 3-4 per cent volume growth, he added. Operating profitability is also seen improving 50-100 basis points (bps) to 21 per cent this fiscal, supported by moderation in input and logistics costs, and abating pricing pressure in the US generics market, it said. This follows two consecutive years of margin contraction due to high pricing pressure in the US and a sharp rise in input costs caused by supply chain disruption during the Covid pandemic, and thereafter, Crisil noted. Credit profiles will remain stable owing to low-leverage balance sheets and moderate capex plans, it stated. In the ongoing fiscal, domestic sales are expected to witness 8-10 per cent growth with the chronic segment expected to be the key contributor to revenues, because of the steady increase in lifestyle-related diseases and continued emphasis on health awareness, post the pandemic, Crisil said. Formulation exports are seen up 7-9 per cent in rupee terms this fiscal, more driven by volumes, from new product launches, and abating price pressure in the US generics markets, it said. On the other hand, increase in claw-back taxes in select <keyword id="28249" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="europe" source="Orion">Europe</keyword>an markets could lead to lower growth in exports to Europe this fiscal, it added. "Growth in exports to Asia will improve this fiscal, after clocking a modest growth last fiscal, while exports to Africa will continue to remain sluggish on account of low forex reserves (impacting the purchasing power) and high currency volatility," Crisil said. Lower input prices and normalisation of supply chains should cull inventories to pre-pandemic levels, resulting in smaller incremental working capital debt this fiscal, it added. Indian pharma industry to log in 8-10% revenue growth this fiscal: Crisil

A press release form Dr Reddy's said the portfolio includes approximately 45 commercial products, four pipeline products and 40 approved non-marketed products, including a number of generic products focused on women's health. Under the terms of the agreement, Dr Reddy's will acquire the portfolio for an upfront payment of approximately USD 90 million in cash, contingent payments of up to USD 15 million, consideration towards inventory and credits for certain accrued channel liabilities to be determined on the closing date, it said. For the financial period ended June 30, 2022, Mayne Pharma reported total revenue of USD 111 million (USD) for the acquired portfolio. Approved high-value products include a hormonal vaginal ring, a birth control pill and a cardiovascular product. The closing of the transaction is subject to satisfactory completion of customary closing conditions including the applicable waiting period under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act of 1976 (HSR Act), as amended. The acquisition will complement Dr Reddy's US retail prescription <keyword id="6469017" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pharmaceutical" source="Orion">pharmaceutical</keyword> business with limited competition products. It also supports Dr Reddy's efforts to accelerate and expand affordable medications for patients, the release further said. Marc Kikuchi, Chief Executive Officer, North America business, Dr Reddy's, said, "This important acquisition provides our North America organisation with a significant foothold in the women's health space. The acquisition is in line with our stated strategy to enhance our portfolio in our chosen growth markets. We are well-positioned to successfully integrate the portfolio and grow the business." Erez Israeli, Chief Executive Officer, Dr Reddy's, said, "The portfolio of products acquired from Mayne Pharma is a strategic fit with our growth objectives. The portfolio includes some high entry-barrier products. It also complements our existing portfolio by introducing products focused on women's health. Our strong balance sheet enables us to acquire products of strategic importance to strengthen our base business and build for long-term growth." Modi's 'self-reliance' call need of the hour: Pharma industry

A joint report by PeopleStrong, Wheetbox, CII and LinkedIn revealed that the pharma and health sector will see an increase in hiring by 20% as compared to 7.2% in 2015. 
 The India Skills Report 2016 stated that the pharma and <keyword id="54598" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Healthcare-sector">healthcare sector</keyword>, which presently employs around 5.5 lakh people, will create 1, 34, 000 jobs in 2016. 
 
The report also placed the Indian pharma industry in top 10 global markets in value terms by 2020. 
 
So what will be the key skills that the pharma sector will be looking for this year? 
 
The employers will prefer hiring freshers (33.6%). People with five years of work experience having skilled domain expertise in the age group of 22-25 years will see an up in hiring by 32%. 
 The need of skilled manpower in the <keyword id="189164" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="pharmaceutical-industry">pharmaceutical industry</keyword> ranges widely from R&amp;D, Quality Assurance (QA), Intellectual Property (IP), manufacturing to even sales and marketing. 
 
The sector still prefers to look for candidates through job portals (25%) &amp; HR consultants (18.75%). 
 
Also, the maximum hiring in this sector will be seen from Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

These ads are referencing the "non-interference clause" in Medicare Part D, which has nothing to do with determining which drugs patients can access under Medicare. The<a href="https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/42/1395w-111"> non-interference clause</a> states that the secretary of Health and Human Services "may not interfere with the negotiations between drug manufacturers and pharmacies and prescription drug plan sponsors." It was inserted into the Medicare Modernization Act after<a href="https://www.propublica.org/article/medicare-drug-planners-now-lobbyists-with-billions-at-stake-1020"> intense</a> lobbying by the pharma industry and its allies to ensure drug corporations could dictate prices on brand-name drugs.Big Pharma says Medicare negotiation proposals would enable government bureaucrats to "<a href="https://host2.adimpact.com/admo/viewer/4969159">limit which drugs</a> patients have access to." But there are no congressional proposals that suggest implementing a government-imposed list to limit drug availability, or seek to change the<a href="https://www.kff.org/medicare/fact-sheet/an-overview-of-the-medicare-part-d-prescription-drug-benefit/"> long-standing policy</a> under Medicare to cover drugs for all conditions, with at least two medications in each drug class. Drug price negotiation bills simply aim to achieve affordable prices for taxpayers and patients.Pharma says negotiation would reduce access and "<a href="https://host2.adimpact.com/admo/viewer/76bbea76-07d8-49eb-8020-d53c1ed2f343/">make it harder</a> for people on Medicare to get the medications [they] need." The biggest barrier to patient access is high prices. Without reform, more than<a href="https://www.westhealth.org/press-release/study-predicts-1-million-deaths-due-to-high-cost-prescription-drugs/"> 1.1 million</a> Medicare patients could die over the next decade because they cannot afford to pay for their prescription medications. The Congressional Budget Office says lower drug prices achieved by negotiation would<a href="https://www.cbo.gov/system/files/2019-10/hr3ltr.pdf"> increase access</a> and improve health - resulting in less money spent on medical visits and hospitalizations.Pharma says Medicare negotiation will "<a href="https://host2.adimpact.com/admo/viewer/de7e4506-27e6-4623-998c-0d78a9a68c2b/">stifle innovation</a> and discovery of new medicines." Rather, reforms like Medicare negotiation would reward clinically meaningful drugs with prices that stimulate<a href="https://patientsforaffordabledrugs.org/2021/02/03/innovation-report/"> innovation</a> - not thwart it. As long as drug companies retain their current power to block competition and raise prices at will on old drugs to drive profits and trigger executive bonuses, they have far less incentive to take risk and invest in research and development to find innovative new drugs that could command high prices and save lives. If Medicare makes clear it wants to pay the best prices for the best drugs, negotiation will stimulate innovation as companies pursue those prices.Pharma also says Medicare negotiation would import<a href="https://rareaccessactionproject.org/rare-disease-drug-market-may-be-devastated-by-current-proposed-changes-to-medicare-part-d/"> "European-style price controls."</a> Negotiation is a core tenet of a free market, not "European-style price controls." The federal government negotiates physician, hospital, lab, and durable medical equipment prices. The pharmaceutical industry is the only <keyword id="11897506" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="healthcare" source="Orion">healthcare</keyword> sector exempt from negotiation with Medicare. The proposal for negotiation would simply end special treatment for drug makers.The pharma industry says policy proposals like<a href="https://www.speaker.gov/LowerDrugCosts"> HR 3</a> would "<a href="https://host2.adimpact.com/admo/viewer/de7e4506-27e6-4623-998c-0d78a9a68c2b/">cost America thousands of jobs</a>." But the fact is, large, brand-name drug corporations could lose<a href="https://www.westhealth.org/press-release/new-analysis-finds-large-drug-makers-could-lose-1-trillion-in-sales-and-still-be-the-most-profitable-industry/"> $1 trillion</a> in sales over a decade and still be the most profitable industry in the nation. Given that the Congressional Budget Office<a href="https://www.cbo.gov/system/files/2019-10/hr3ltr.pdf"> found</a> that even this sizable reduction in revenue would reduce the number of drugs coming to market by only 2-5% over a decade, drug corporations' claims of widespread job loss are far-fetched.Moreover, legislation that increases government spending on research and development through the National Institutes of Health can help to fuel more drug development and job opportunities in the private sector. It's notable that Medicare negotiation is<a href="https://aflcio.org/about/advocacy/legislative-alerts/letter-supporting-legislation-would-lower-drug-prices"> supported</a> by the nation's premier worker organization, the AFL-CIO.If Big Pharma spent more time working on innovative new drugs and less time protecting its power to dictate high prices, we'd get more of what we seek: innovation we need at prices we can afford.

However, the pandemic did a number on the pharma sector, just as it did for others. When pharma firms were gunning to find the antidote to the virus, they, like all others, had to do it from home. Which in turn led to the entry of more <keyword id="50691" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="digital" source="Orion">digital</keyword> processes and skills. “Necessity is the mother of invention, and that has forced us to adapt and adopt technology,” said Dr. <keyword id="6471231" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="sanjay-arora" source="Orion">Sanjay Arora</keyword>, Global Medical Director, Dr. <keyword id="1854199" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="lal-path-labs" source="Orion">Lal Path Labs</keyword> and Founder of Suburban Diagnostics, speaking at the Transforming Pharma: Formulating effective upskilling strategies webinar by Business Insider. While <keyword id="176" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="arora" source="Orion">Arora</keyword> argued that the pharma sector has always needed employees to upskill themselves and keep up with the newest scientific discoveries and diseases, he identified automation and the effective use of data analytics as two big changes in the industry. “The talent has been quite fungible over the last one or one and a half years. It is not just for pharma, it is across industries and the globe. But pharma got more impacted because it’s a knowledge industry, and a lot of people who carry that knowledge can’t be substituted by somebody who just comes in with the same number of years or background of education. Hence the need to quickly train the new people coming in and make sure that the delivery was not impacted.” said Amitava Saha, President and CHRO, Biocon Group. Saha noted that things are changing rapidly in the industry, not just in laboratories but also in manufacturing units. “The rules are changing, as are the efficiency indexes,” he said, adding that the use of technology is inevitable in such a situation. “Imagine the pace at which the (Covid-19) vaccine was developed without compromising on any regulatory process. Digital transformation was the backbone,” noted Dr. Anil Kukreja, Vice President, Medical Affairs and Regulatory, Astrazeneca India. He added that real-time data analytics were instrumental in bringing insights into research, and sharing those insights with regulators across the world. Further, <keyword id="275963" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="yugal-sikri" source="Orion">Yugal Sikri</keyword>, Managing Director, RPG Life Sciences, pointed out that the pharma industry is unique because “your product is a technical product”. “You have to have techno and commercial, both dimensions clear, because the industry is extremely competitive. Particularly the generic (drug) industry is extremely competitive, we have 10,000 odd companies in India (alone). So you need to have both the techno and commercial skills,” he said. The need for upskilling though is not the responsibility of employees alone. “One of the things that we hear during this Great Resignation is that people are moving jobs, and one of the reasons they cite is that they’re not learning enough. So they’re trying to learn somewhere else,” said <keyword id="13003481" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="dulles-krishnan" source="Orion">Dulles Krishnan</keyword>, Managing Director, Coursera Enterprise, India and ANZ. While most analysts have a ‘subscribe’ call on it, some advise caution due to the stretched valuation. Ahead of the IPO, the company already raised ₹1,944 crore from anchor investors at the price of ₹1,500 per equity share. Some of the marquee names among the anchor investors include the Government of Singapore, Nomura, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, SBI Mutual Fund and Axis Mutual Fund. Fierce competition in the industry Although the pharma sector is deemed to grow, what remains challenging is the cut-throat competition in the industry. “The markets in which Gland Pharma sells its generic injectable products are highly competitive. According to the IQVIA Report, injectable manufacturers face entry barriers such as high capital investments, operational costs, manufacturing complexities, stricter compliance requirements (because of the sterile nature of products) and high-quality standards resulting in limited competition in the market,” the Sharekhan report said. China’s Fosun-owned Gland Pharma IPO opens today— Here’s all you need to know about India’s largest pharmaceutical IPO

New Delhi, Jan 28 () The growth trajectory for the Indian pharmaceutical industry is likely to remain at 10-13 per cent in 2020-21 despite challenges, according to rating agency Icra.
The expected growth in the next financial year is on the back of healthy demand from the domestic market given increasing spend on healthcare along with improving access, Icra said in a statement.
This along with abatement in pricing pressure for the US market, new launches and market share gains for existing products and consolidation benefits will drive growth in 2020-21, it added. 
"The Indian pharmaceutical industry's growth remained stable at 12.2 per cent during H1 FY2020 led by rebound in domestic growth in Q2 FY2020 to 14.2 per cent supported by seasonal factors and stable growth in chronic therapies," Icra Vice President &amp; Co-Head Gaurav Jain said.
 During Q2 FY2020, India witnessed outbreak of many diseases in many parts, aiding the growth of the anti-infective segment, he added.
Though margins remain healthy, pricing pressures for the US base generics business (albeit moderating), lack of limited competition products and manufacturing quality issues will continue to put margin pressure, Icra said.
Higher share of domestic business and operational efficiencies will provide overall cushion to margins, it added.
The key sensitivities to growth and profitability estimated of the Indian pharma industry will be regulatory interventions such as price controls and compulsory genericisation for domestic market and continued regulatory overhang with respect to manufacturing quality deficiencies during USFDA audits, the statement said.
"The US market growth at 13.6 per cent in H1 FY2020 was impacted by regulatory overhang in the form of warning letters, one-offs such as delayed shipments, voluntary recall, though few limited competition products, lower pricing pressure, volume expansion for existing and new product launches supported growth," Jain said.
Unlike in the past, when several Indian pharma companies ramped up their R&amp;D spend targeting pipeline of specialty drugs, niche molecules and complex therapies, this time around companies are optimising their R&amp;D spend, the statement said.
"The credit metrics of leading pharma companies are expected to remain stable in view of future growth prospects in regulated markets and relatively strong balance sheets," Jain said.
The capital structure and coverage indicators are expected to remain strong despite pressure on profitability and marginal rise in debt levels given inorganic investments, he added.
"The key sensitivity to ICRA's view remains productivity of R&amp;D expenditure, increasing competition in the US generics space and operational risk related to increased level of due diligence by regulatory agencies," Jain said. AKT AKT ANU

FOMO helps Gland Pharma swell on debut

New Delhi, Jan 9 () Mahindra Logistics Ltd (MLL) on Thursday said it has launched a distribution centre for the pharmaceutical industry in the country's northern region, making a foray into first-of-its-kind temperature-controlled warehouse in the pharma sector.
 Through this facility, MLL will manage the warehousing and distribution for its client, in addition to their inbound and outbound multi-modal transportation across India.
 "MLL, one of India's largest 3PL solution providers, recently launched a state-of-the-art distribution centre for the pharma industry in North India. With this launch, MLL forays into a first-of-its-kind temperature-controlled warehouse in the pharma sector," the company said in a statement.
 It said the warehouse is specially designed and equipped with the latest temperature-control mechanisms for efficient power consumption, customised storage, diverse material-handling equipment (MHE) and technological solutions, including 'Mycargo360', a transportation management system.
 Rampraveen Swaminathan, chief executive officer of Mahindra Logistics, said, "We are delighted to open this facility and we are certain that this facility will align our clients' distribution network in North India and achieve their post-GST requirements."
 He added, "The facility is sustainable and energy efficient. Our integrated distribution solution combining warehousing, transportation and express movement will help our customers optimise their cost and on-time delivery."
 MLL provides a range of services and solutions, including warehousing, distribution and cross-border logistics solutions for the pharma industry.
 With warehousing, transportation and freight forwarding operations spanning 15 million square feet and 75,000 vehicle placements per month, MLL has an extensive pan-India network and global connectivity, it said.

This year marked the lowest net positivity rating - or the difference between people who say they like the industry and those who dislike the industry - that the pharmaceutical industry has had since Gallup started polling in 2001.Pharma's -31 net positivity rating was so low, only a handful of industries had been ranked lower. Other hated sectors include the federal government, and oil and gas companies. An Oklahoma judge recently ordered Johnson &amp; Johnson pay <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/johnson-and-johnson-judgement-small-part-of-2018-profit-2019-8">$572 million</a> for its role in the opioid epidemic. Novartis and other major pharma companies <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/major-pharmaceutical-companies-dropping-antibiotic-projects-superbugs-2018-7">stopped developing life-saving medicine</a> for lack of profit.The pharmaceutical industry unseated the federal government for America's most hated industry. The federal government had been last or tied last on Gallup's poll since 2011. This year, it ranks as the second least favorable industry.Other hated industries include the legal field, healthcare, and the ad industry.Americans view the restaurant and computer industries most favorably, according to Gallup.
