The country's drugs and <keyword id="20006091" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pharmaceuticals" source="keywords">pharmaceuticals</keyword> exports increased 9.67 per cent year-on-year to USD 27.9 billion in 2023-24, even as the total exports dipped by 3 per cent in the last fiscal. According to the commerce ministry data, <keyword id="20988985" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pharma-exports" source="keywords">pharma exports</keyword> in March grew by 12.73 per cent to USD 2.8 billion. In 2022-23, the exports stood at USD 25.4 billion. The top five export markets, for the sector during the last fiscal, are the US, the UK, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, South Africa and Brazil. The US accounts for over 31 per cent of <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="India" source="keywords">India</keyword>'s total pharma exports, followed by the UK and Netherlands (about 3 per cent each). In 2023-24, the outbound shipments also entered new geographies like Montenegro, South Sudan, Chad, Comoros, Brunei, Latvia, Ireland, Chad, Sweden, Haiti and Ethiopia. An industry expert said that increasing market opportunities and healthy demand in countries like the US are helping exports to record healthy growth rates month after month. Experts have said that India's pharmaceutical business may exceed USD 130 billion by 2030, supported by expanding market opportunities and heightened demand in the overseas markets. The business stood at over USD 50 billion for the 2022-23. On average, India exports pharma products worth USD 2-3 billion every month. India's pharmaceutical industry is the third largest by volume and the 13th largest by value in the world, producing more than 60,000 <keyword id="20581305" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="generic-drugs" source="keywords">generic drugs</keyword> across 60 therapeutic categories. The government has rolled out two production-linked incentive (<keyword id="19958919" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pli" source="keywords">PLI</keyword>) schemes to promote domestic manufacturing of key pharmaceutical ingredients and generic medicines. India's pharma exports rise 10% to $27.9 bn in FY24

India's merchandise <keyword id="35090" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="exports" source="Orion">exports</keyword> slipped by 2.83 per cent to USD 33.90 billion in November while the <keyword id="113688" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="trade-deficit" source="Orion">trade deficit</keyword> narrowed to USD 20.58 billion, according to government data. <keyword id="35091" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="imports" source="Orion">Imports</keyword> also fell by 4.33 per cent to USD 54.48 billion in November, the data released by the commerce ministry on Friday showed. Cumulatively, the country's merchandise exports in April-November FY2023-24 contracted by 6.51 per cent to USD 278.8 billion. Imports were also down by 8.67 per cent to USD 445.15 billion in the eight-month period due to a fall in <keyword id="522549" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="oil-imports" source="Orion">oil imports</keyword>. Oil imports dipped to USD 113.65 billion as against USD 139.29 billion in April-November 2022-23. The trade deficit - difference between imports and exports - during the eight-month period was USD 166.35 billion against USD 189.21 billion in the corresponding period last year. Briefing reporters here, Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal said that given the global situation, India's export numbers are good. All key export sectors have recorded negative growth during the April-November period of this fiscal and that include petroleum products, <keyword id="44517" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gems" source="Orion">gems</keyword> and jewellery, chemicals, garments, and engineering goods. Sectors which registered positive growth include electronics, iron ore, and pharma. The other import segments whose inbound shipments are contracted include coal, coke; pearls, precious and semi-precious stones; and fertiliser. However, gold imports increased by 21 per cent to USD 32.93 billion. Electronic goods' imports have risen to USD 57.83 billion during April-November 2023-24 against USD 51.89 billion in the same period last year. The gold imports in November rose by 6.24 per cent to USD 3.44 billion. Oil imports during the month, however, dipped by 8.47 per cent to USD 14.93 billion. Barthwal said the global trade is suffering but, "we are holding the fort". He added that GDP growth of many countries are "not so high", interest rate regime is not softening, global conflicts are aggravating, irrespective of these issues, "we are doing well". Exports in October had grew by 6.21 per cent. According to the data, the estimated value of services export for November is USD 28.69 billion, as compared to USD 26.93 billion in November 2022. During the eight-month period, these exports stood at USD 220.66 billion as compared to USD 208.30 billion in April-November 2022. The World Trade Organisation (WTO) has forecast that global trade will grow only by 0.8 per cent in 2023. According to UNCTAD report, global trade expected to shrink by nearly 5 per cent in 2023 amid geopolitical strains and shifting trade patterns.

The Indian pharmaceuticals industry is expected to log in a revenue growth of 8-10 per cent in current fiscal aided by a steady domestic growth and increased exports to regulated markets, even as semi-regulated markets face headwinds, according to a report. A study of 186 drug makers, which accounted for about half of the Rs 3.7 lakh crore annual revenue of the sector last fiscal, indicates as much, <keyword id="6359483" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="crisil" source="Orion">Crisil</keyword> said on Monday. "Similar to last fiscal, domestic growth in fiscal 2024, will be led by 5-6 per cent increase in realisations, supported partly by high price hikes allowed by the <keyword id="390804" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="national-pharmaceutical-pricing-authority" source="Orion">National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority</keyword> (NPPA) for drugs under price regulation," Crisil Research Director <keyword id="13891160" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="aniket-dani" source="Orion">Aniket Dani</keyword> said. In addition, sale of existing drugs and new launches will drive 3-4 per cent volume growth, he added. Operating profitability is also seen improving 50-100 basis points (bps) to 21 per cent this fiscal, supported by moderation in input and logistics costs, and abating pricing pressure in the US generics market, it said. This follows two consecutive years of margin contraction due to high pricing pressure in the US and a sharp rise in input costs caused by supply chain disruption during the Covid pandemic, and thereafter, Crisil noted. Credit profiles will remain stable owing to low-leverage balance sheets and moderate capex plans, it stated. In the ongoing fiscal, domestic sales are expected to witness 8-10 per cent growth with the chronic segment expected to be the key contributor to revenues, because of the steady increase in lifestyle-related diseases and continued emphasis on health awareness, post the pandemic, Crisil said. Formulation exports are seen up 7-9 per cent in rupee terms this fiscal, more driven by volumes, from new product launches, and abating price pressure in the US generics markets, it said. On the other hand, increase in claw-back taxes in select <keyword id="28249" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="europe" source="Orion">Europe</keyword>an markets could lead to lower growth in exports to Europe this fiscal, it added. "Growth in exports to Asia will improve this fiscal, after clocking a modest growth last fiscal, while exports to Africa will continue to remain sluggish on account of low forex reserves (impacting the purchasing power) and high currency volatility," Crisil said. Lower input prices and normalisation of supply chains should cull inventories to pre-pandemic levels, resulting in smaller incremental working capital debt this fiscal, it added. New Delhi, India's <keyword id="35090" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="exports" source="Orion">exports</keyword> contracted by 12.7 per cent, third month in a row, to USD 34.66 billion in April even as the <keyword id="113688" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="trade-deficit" source="Orion">trade deficit</keyword> reduced to a 20-month low of USD 15.24 billion, the government data showed on Monday. The decline in exports is mainly on account of poor demand in India's key destinations -- the Europe and the US -- and it may take some more months for the situation to improve. The demand scenario is "not looking very good as far as Europe is concerned, and the US also we have seen a decline in demand. For the next 2-3 months, I think the demand scenario does not look very optimistic," DGFT (Director General of Foreign Trade) Santosh Kumar Sarangi told reporters here. However, he expressed hope that things would change from September onwards. "There is a possibility that opening up of Chinese economy combined with some boost in demand in the Europe and the US economy from August-September onwards might give a boost to global exports," he said. Imports too declined by about 14 per cent, fifth month in a row, to USD 49.9 billion as against USD 58.06 billion recorded in the same month last year, the data showed. Trade deficit in April last year stood at USD 18.36 billion. The previous lowest level was recorded in August 2021, when the deficit stood at USD 13.81 billion. On imports, Sarangi said that the decline is because of cooling down of commodity prices and reduced demand for products which are considered as discretionary like gems and jewellery. He suggested to diversify into products which have higher export demand, such as electronic goods, oil meals, oil seeds, and agricultural goods. He added that export sectors which may get impacted in the coming months include gems and jewellery, apparel and garments, and some engineering products. In April, export sectors which recorded negative growth included petroleum products, gems and jewellery, engineering goods, chemicals and ready-made garments of all textiles. However, electronic goods, pharma, rice and oil meals registered positive growth. The shipments of electronic goods increased by 26.49 per cent to USD 2.11 billion in the month under review. Under merchandise exports, only 11 of the 30 key sectors exhibited positive growth in April and at imports front, 23 out of 30 key sectors recorded negative growth. Crude oil imports dipped by 13.95 per cent to USD 15.17 billion. Gold imports too contracted by 41.48 per cent to USD 1 billion in April. India's exports to the US in April declined by 17.16 per cent to USD 5.9 billion. Similarly to the UAE it dipped by 22 per cent to USD 2.23 billion in April. The other key export destinations where exports reported negative growth included China, Singapore, Bangladesh, and Germany. Further, the commerce ministry has revised upwards the overall trade figures for 2022-23. According to the ministry's data, exports of goods and services in 2022-23 rose by 14.68 per cent to USD 775.87 billion (earlier it was USD 770 billion) as against USD 676.53 billion in 2021-22. Imports increased by 17.65 per cent to USD 894.19 billion, leaving a trade deficit of USD 118.31 billion in 2022-23. Merchandise exports increased by 6.74 per cent to USD 450.43 billion, while imports rose by 16.47 per cent to USD 714 billion in the last fiscal. Services exports rose 27.86 per cent to USD 325.44 billion, while imports increased by 22.54 per cent to USD 180 billion in the last fiscal. Services exports in April this year were estimated at USD 30.36 billion, as compared to USD 24.05 billion in April 2022. The estimated value of services import in April was USD 16.50 billion as compared to USD 14.06 billion in April 2022.

Exports fall for third consecutive month by 12.7% in April; trade deficit at 20-month low

Contracting for the third month in a row, <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>'s exports declined by 8.8 per cent to USD 33.88 billion in February due to a slowdown in global demand, even as the trade deficit touched about a year low of USD 17.43 billion during the month, according to official data released on Wednesday. Imports also declined by 8.21 per cent to USD 51.31 billion as against USD 55.9 billion recorded in the corresponding month last year. Cumulatively, however during April-February this fiscal, the country's overall merchandise exports rose by 7.5 per cent to USD 405.94 billion. Imports during the period increased by 18.82 per cent to USD 653.47 billion. The merchandise trade deficit for the April-February this fiscal stood at about USD 247.53 billion. The country's exports had contracted by 6.58 per cent to USD 32.91 billion in December 2022. In February 2022, the trade deficit was USD 18.75 billion. The last time was in January 2022 when the trade deficit touched USD 17.42 billion. <keyword id="84" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="commerce" source="Orion">Commerce</keyword> secretary <keyword id="326740" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="sunil-barthwal" source="Orion">Sunil Barthwal</keyword> said that going by the trend, India's goods and services exports will cross USD 750 billion in 2022-23. "We have kept the momentum despite the global headwinds. Exporters have kept the momentum. Services exports are doing extremely well. Trade deficit has really come down. Hopefully, we will be doing better," Barthwal told reporters here. He added that the ministry has started exercises to fix the target for the next fiscal also. Export sectors that recorded negative growth during the 11-month period of this fiscal included engineering goods, gems and jewellery, cotton yarn/fabrics/made-ups, and plastic and linoleum. Engineering exports dipped to USD 98.86 billion during April-February 2022-23 from USD 101.15 billion in the same period last fiscal. In the same period, gems and jewellery shipments declined to USD 35.21 billion from USD 35.32 billion from April-February 2022-23. Sectors which recorded positive growth included petroleum products, chemicals, pharma, electronic goods, rice, and ready-made garments of textiles. Gold imports during April-February this fiscal contracted to USD 31.72, as against USD 45.12 billion in the same period last year. In the 11 months of the current fiscal, crude oil imports rose to USD 193.47 billion as against USD 140.67 billion in the same period of 2021-22.
