The European Medicines Agency (EMA), responsible for assessing and approving medicines and vaccines for the European Union, said hours earlier it had been targeted in a cyberattack. It gave no further details. Pfizer and BioNTech said they were waiting for further information from the EMA, but the agency "has assured us that the cyber attack will have no impact on the timeline for its review." It was not immediately clear when or how the attack took place, who was responsible or what other information may have been compromised. A spokeswoman for BioNTech declined further comment. Pfizer did not immediately respond to a request for further comment. The two companies said in a joint statement that they had been informed by the EMA "that the agency has been subject to a cyber attack and that some documents relating to the regulatory submission for Pfizer and BioNTech's COVID-19 vaccine candidate ... had been unlawfully accessed." They added that "no BioNTech or Pfizer systems have been breached in connection with this incident and we are unaware of any personal data of study participants being accessed." The EMA gave few details about the attack in its earlier statement, saying only that it was investigating the incident with help from law enforcement. "EMA cannot provide additional details whilst the investigation is ongoing. Further information will be made available in due course," it said in a statement. Pfizer and BioNTech says their vaccine data was 'unlawfully accessed' in a cyberattack on an EU regulator

<ul><li>India’s three main surveillance projects — <keyword id="109740" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="NATGRID">NATGRID</keyword>, <keyword id="15615" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="cms">CMS</keyword>, and <keyword id="26425" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Netra">NETRA</keyword> — have been directed to stop collecting data by the Delhi High Court. </li><li>The order comes as public interest litigation (PLI) filed by lawyer Prashant Bhushan on behalf of the CPLI cited that there is ‘insufficient oversight’ allowing the mass surveillance of Indian citizens and breaking their <keyword id="515140" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="right-to-privacy">right to privacy</keyword>. </li><li>NATGRID has access to 12 categories of data, CMS can listen in on your phone conversations, and NETRA can track everything you do online. </li></ul>The Delhi High Court has issued a notice today asking India’s central government to stop collecting data through their three main surveillance systems — National Intelligence Grid (NATGRID), Central Monitoring System (CMS) and Network Traffic Analysis (NETRA). The notice is in response to public interest litigation (PLI) filed by lawyer and activist Prashant Bhushan on behalf of the NGO called the Center for Public Interest Litigation (CPIL). In the appeal, Bhushan argues that the three systems create a net of 360-degree surveillance on Indian citizens. What are NATGRID, NETRA and CMS? NATGRID, NETRA and CMS are surveillance systems. This means they collect data in order to keep an eye out for anything that could threaten national security. NATGRID allows investigation and law enforcement agencies to access real-time information from data stored within agencies like the Income Tax Department, banks, insurance companies, the Indian Railways, and other offices. There are a total of 21 categories of data that NATGRID has access to. Where the NATGRID has access to real-time data, CMS is centralised telephone interception provisioning system. And, it’s exactly what it sounds like. It can bypass the middleman — the telecom companies — to directly monitor text messages, social media posts and phone calls. NETRA is the third leg of India’s security infrastructure. While the CMS is tapping into your phone’s network, NETRA is watching everything you do online — not just on social media. It can monitor any text-based messages containing direct messages on Facebook, within your personal emails or online blogs. Using filters and keywords, it can identify words even in encrypted messages. How does NATGRID undermine the right to privacy? NATGRID was established through governmental notifications rather than through legislation passed in the Parliament. Even though it helps the project come to fruition faster, it also undermines the system of checks and balances essential to a democracy, according to <a href="https://www.prsindia.org/theprsblog/natgrid-should-parliament-have-role">PRS India</a>. Considering that NATGRID can access information of private individuals, it also has a bearing on their fundamental rights — like the right to privacy, as cited by Bhushan. Unlike India, countries like the US and the European Union (EU) have comprehensive privacy laws. They include the conditions under which access to databases would be allowed and limitations on how such data can be used. UIDAI, like NATGRID, was formed using governmental notifications. It was established as an executive authority, and still functions without a statutory mandate. What roles to CMS and NETRA play? The underlying logic for developing CMS and NETRA was to monitor terrorist activities mainly after the terrorist bomb attack in Mumbai on November 26, 2008. With both of them, the problem again boils down to a lack of transparency in the absence of data protection laws. The general public has no way of knowing if and when a person’s data has been intercepted or how data is being used. CMS and NETRA allow for mass surveillance with the potential to target large groups of people without a valid reason. To solve for the lack of transparency, the PLI filed by Bhushan seeks the creation of a permanent independent oversight body — either judicial or parliamentary — for issuing and reviewing lawful interception and monitoring warrants under the enabling provisions of the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885 and the Information Technology Act, 2000. The suspected <keyword id="1768473" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Russian-Hackers">Russian hackers</keyword> installed malware in the Orion software sold by the IT management company SolarWinds, and accessed sensitive data belonging to several US government agencies, at least one hospital and a university, reports Wall Street Journal. The report said on Monday that several tech companies also suffered data breach in this massive hack operation. Cisco, Intel, Nvidia, Belkin, and VMware have all had computers on their networks software infected with the malware. "Cisco confirmed that it found the malicious software on some employee systems and a small number of laboratory systems". The company was still investigating the hack. Intel "is investigating the incident and has found no evidence the hackers used the backdoor to access the company's network". VMware said it found "limited instances" of the malicious software in its systems. "The attackers also had access to the California Department of State Hospitals and Kent State University". An Nvidia spokesman told the WSJ that the company has "no evidence at this time that Nvidia was adversely affected and our investigation is ongoing." SolarWinds had stated that "fewer than 18,000" companies were impacted. The Journal gathered digital clues from victim computers collected by threat-intelligence companies Farsight Security and RiskIQ. It then used decryption methods to reveal the identities of some of the servers that downloaded the malicious code. "In some cases, the analysis led to the identity of compromised organisations and showed when the code was likely activated — indicating that the hackers had access", the report mentioned. Microsoft President Brad Smith last week said that they have identified more than 40 customers who have been affected by nation-state hackers who installed malware in SolarWinds' Orion platform. Cybersecurity firm FireEye's CEO Kevin Mandia had said that "we are witnessing an attack by a nation with top-tier offensive capabilities," and the Washington Post reported that a hacker group backed by the Russian government is behind data breaches at the Treasury and Commerce departments and other US government agencies. According to Smith, the attack is ongoing and is being actively investigated and addressed by cybersecurity teams in the public and private sectors, including Microsoft. The hacking group, known as APT29, or Cozy Bear, is behind the attack on FireEye, accessing its internal network and stealing hacking tools the company uses to test the networks belonging to its customers. "While roughly 80% of these customers are located in the United States, this work so far has also identified victims in seven additional countries," Smith informed in a blog post. The countries are Canada, Mexico, Belgium, Spain, the UK, Israel and the UAE. The market's next hurdle will arrive in earnings season, when firms will begin to reissue guidance and detail just how quickly they can come back from their virus hit. It's hard for the market to sustain such a steep upswing, and investors' optimism could easily be rattled by a major earnings miss, Kinahan said."My fear is that the reality of when we start getting real earnings," he said.
