Washington, Feb 15 (PTI) A third dose of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine conferred higher effectiveness against infection and hospitalisation than two doses of the preventive after one month, a study has found. The study, published in The Lancet Regional Health-Americas, assessed the effectiveness of two doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccination against infection, hospitalisation, and death up to eight months after vaccination. The researchers also assessed the effectiveness of three doses of the vaccine up to three months after vaccination. The study evaluated electronic health records of 3.1 million members of Kaiser Permanente in Southern California from December 2020 to December 2021. "When we looked at the effectiveness of the two doses of Pfizer–BioNTech vaccine versus three doses, we see a benefit with three doses that exceeds that achieved with two doses alone," said Sara Y Tartof from Kaiser Permanente Southern California Department of Research &amp; Evaluation, US. During the study period, 197,535 patients were infected with SARS-CoV-2, and of those 15,786 were admitted to the hospital. During the study period, the predominant variant was Delta and not Omicron. Two-dose vaccine effectiveness against infection declined from 85 per cent during the first month after vaccination to 49 per cent up to eight months following vaccination, the researchers said. Two-dose vaccine effectiveness against hospitalisation remained 90 per cent throughout the eight months and did not wane, except among people who were 75 years of age and older, or who had compromised immune systems, they said. For people who were immunocompromised, the protection against hospitalisation dropped to 74 per cent, and for those 75 and older, it was 77 per cent, according to the researchers. Three-dose vaccine effectiveness was 88 per cent against infection and 97 per cent against hospitalisation within the first three months after vaccination, they said. "What we see from this research is that the public health impact of a third dose to prevent severe disease is substantial," Tartof said. "Importantly, all studies that have evaluated the vaccine effectiveness of a third dose -- including ours -- have shown a meaningful improvement in vaccine effectiveness against a broad range of SARS-CoV-2 outcomes," she added. Three doses of Pfizer Covid vaccine better than two: Study

Seoul, Feb 23 (AP) South Korean health officials on Wednesday approved Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine for children aged 5 to 11, expanding the country's immunisation programme in the face of a massive omicron outbreak that is driving up hospitalisations and deaths. The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency reported a record 171,452 new virus cases on Wednesday, nearly a 40-fold increase from levels in mid-January when omicron first emerged as the country's dominant strain. The 99 new deaths were the highest daily tally since Dec. 31, when the country was grappling with a delta-driven surge that buckled hospital systems. More than 500 virus patients are now in serious or critical condition, up from around 200 in mid-February. In a long-awaited announcement, the Ministry of Drug and Food Safety said it approved the Pfizer vaccine as the country's first shot to be used for children aged 5 to 11. The KDCA didn't immediately say when vaccinations for this age group would begin. The Pfizer shot is already used for children aged 5 to 11 in more than 60 countries, including the United States and in the European Union, the MDFS said in a press release. The vaccine will help protect younger children from infections or serious illness amid South Korea's fast-developing omicron surge, it added. Teenagers and younger children have been linked to a rising number of infections in recent weeks, according to KDCA data, a worrisome development as schools prepare for new semesters in March. But officials were accused of prematurely easing social distancing rules ahead of a devastating delta-driven spread in December and early January. The country's strengths have been further eroded by the highly transmissible omicron variant, which is stretching worn-out health and public workers. The country has been forced to reshape its pandemic response in a way that effectively tolerates the virus' spread among the broader population while concentrating medical resources to protect high-risk groups, including people 60 years or older and those with pre-existing medical conditions. Officials have significantly eased quarantine restrictions and reduced contact tracing, while more than 520,000 people with mild or moderate symptoms are currently being treated at home to save hospital space. The country has also reshaped its testing policy around rapid antigen test kits, despite concerns over their accuracy and propensity for false-negative results, to save laboratory tests mostly for priority groups. Many South Koreans are wary of the bend-but-not-break approach as the country continues to report some of the world's highest daily infection numbers. Authorities seem to have limited political capacity to strengthen social distancing ahead of the March presidential election, given people's fatigue and frustration with extended restrictions and the strain on service sector businesses. Despite the growing outbreak, officials last week extended restaurant dining hours by an hour to 10 pm over economic considerations, although they have so far maintained a six-person limit on private social gatherings. "It would be crucial for us to weather the virus spread while minimising serious illnesses and deaths," Health Ministry official Son Youngrae said during a briefing. The results showed that around four in ten people who received their first dose had at least one after effect in their arm, most commonly pain and swelling in the day or two after the jab. The COVID Symptom Study was created by doctors and scientists working in partnership with ZOE - a health science company. "Our ongoing ZOE app data is so far showing reassuring signs of prevention after 12 days in 40,000 health care workers," Spector said in a tweet. Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine's after effects are of non-serious nature, shows UK study

The rollout of the vaccine has already led to a substantial financial windfall for the New York City-based company, and the prospect on enhanced distribution of Paxlovid, the potential rollout of Omicron-tailored vaccines and more booster shots in the future will lead to an influx of even more cash. On Tuesday, the company revealed its fourth quarter earnings and revenue projections for 2022 where it said it estimates it will earn up to $102 billion in sales next year, which would be a new record. More than half of those earnings will be off of its two Covid products, with the vaccine expected to bring in $32 billion in sales, and Paxlovid expected to earn $22 billion. But despite the record earnings estimates, the drugmaker posted mixed fourth-quarter results when it comes to actual revenue, with shares down 5.4 per cent in early morning trading. Shares were down 2.84 per cent by closing, the report said. The Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine is the most commonly used jab in the US and many other countries around the world. According to official data from the the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the jab has been used 319 million times - more than half of the 540 million vaccines administered in the nation overall. This includes the nearly 50 million Pfizer booster shots that have been administered to Americans. The company doubled its Q4 sales this year when compared to last, to $23.84 billion over the last three months of last year, the report said. More than half of that revenue, $12.5 billion, came from the Covid vaccines alone. This revenue stream will remain intact for years to come, potentially even the next decade, if Pfizer has its way. Pfizer says that it may earn over $100 billion just by selling COVID-19 vaccine and antiviral pill

Taking the first dose of <keyword id="44612" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pfizer">Pfizer</keyword> <keyword id="8764262" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="covid">Covid</keyword> vaccine and then AstraZeneca for the second can provide good protection against the pandemic virus, a study has found. The study included 850 volunteers aged 50 and above, who were given the doses four weeks apart. The team found that people who took AstraZeneca shot followed by Pfizer showed higher antibodies and T cell responses than those who took Pfizer followed by AstraZeneca. Both of these mixes induced higher antibodies than two doses of AstraZeneca, while the highest antibody response was seen after two doses of Pfizer, and the highest T cell response from AstraZeneca followed by Pfizer. "We already know that both standard schedules are very effective against severe disease and hospitalisations, including against the Delta variant when given at eight to 12 weeks apart," lead investigator Professor Matthew Snape, from varsity was quoted as saying. He however, added that the findings did not undermine the UK policy of giving people the same jab twice. But, they do offer such flexibility for vaccine rollout in the future. "Mixing doses could provide us with even greater flexibility for a booster programme, while also supporting countries who have further to go with their vaccine rollouts, and who may be experiencing supply difficulties," UK's deputy chief medical officer, Prof Jonathan Van-Tam, was quoted as saying by the BBC. Two doses are important to give the fullest protection and teach the body to make antibodies and T cells to block and kill Covid. Meanwhile, a pre-print study suggests that a third dose of AstraZeneca vaccine, given more than six months after the second, boosts the immune system, the BBC reported. But when an elderly man at the clinic asked for both the COVID booster and flu vaccine, she decided to do the same."Even though he was in his seventies, he clearly was not concerned at all about getting both vaccines at the same time. Then I realized that I am 30 years younger than him, so why should I worry if he isn't?"A few hours after her shots, Ros said she felt "a little slower mentally." Her arms were slightly tender the following morning, and she "took it easy" for most of that day. But when she woke up on day two after her shot, she said she felt completely normal — even "wonderful."While Ros came away from her experience feeling fine, others who doubled up on their winter vaccines told Insider they had more severe <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/side-effects-omicron-booster-flu-shot-2022-10">side effects</a>, including fever, headache, and nausea.In clinical trials, the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/side-effects-omicron-booster-flu-shot-2022-10">most commonly reported side effects</a> for the latest COVID-19 boosters included sore arms, fatigue, and headache, according to <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/acip/meetings/downloads/slides-2022-09-01/08-COVID-Oliver-508.pdf">data from Moderna and Pfizer trials</a>.But people who opt to get a flu shot and COVID booster at the same visit may be slightly more likely to experience unpleasant but temporary reactions, based on a CDC analysis of <a href="https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamanetworkopen/fullarticle/2794318">self-reports from those who got boosters last year</a>.<h2>Some people reported feeling nauseous after their shots</h2>For Deonys de Cardenas, getting both the bivalent booster and the flu shot was followed by a day of "pure hell."Just hours after her shots, she started feeling "weird," with some minor aches and chills. She told Insider that she vomited in the middle of the night and woke up feeling even worse."It felt like someone beat the hell out of me from the inside out," she said. "Every muscle was sore. I was freezing and nauseous."De Cardenas said even the thought of eating made her want to throw up, and she felt like she couldn't get warm enough. She said she started feeling better the next day but still had a headache, and was finally better two days after her shots.Several other people told Insider they experienced headaches and nausea after their flu shots and bivalent boosters, even though they hadn't had the same side effects after <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/covid-19-vaccine-side-effects-moderna-pfizer-2021-2">previous doses of COVID vaccines</a>."I anticipated some malaise and arm pain but the headache and nausea were new compared to other boosters," Michael Bowling wrote in an email to Insider.He added that his side effects went away within 24 hours, and that he was happy to have gotten both shots despite the temporary reaction.<h2>The flu shot and bivalent booster packed a punch for some people</h2>Lyn Craven told Insider that she had "little to no reaction" to her latest booster and flu shot, which she scheduled a week apart. Her husband was not so lucky.Craven said her husband got both the annual flu shot and the bivalent booster on the same day, just like he did last year."He was down and out for 24 hours," she wrote in an email. Ever since graduating pharmacy school in 2019, I've been working as a "floater" pharmacist for Safeway. As a floater, I move around to different Safeways when other <keyword id="498254" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="pharmacists">pharmacists</keyword> are out or a certain store needs an extra hand. Pharmacists have a variety of job duties. We fulfill prescriptions and offer consultations about different medications, but we also make sure the prescriptions we're fulfilling do not negatively interact with other medicines the customer is prescribed. We can answer most questions about prescription drugs and we're easy to reach - whether by phone or in the pharmacy itself. Because of our proximity to the public, I knew pharmacists would play a big role in the country's <keyword id="8904563" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="covid-19-vaccine">COVID-19 vaccine</keyword> rollout. Since the government announced it would begin <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/where-to-get-covid-vaccine-cvs-walgreens-pharmacy-local-2021-2">distributing coronavirus vaccines</a> to pharmacies starting in mid-February, we've been getting a lot of calls and a lot of questions about when it will be available. <h2>We don't know yet when our pharmacy will get the COVID-19 vaccine. </h2>Safeway is part of the federal government's vaccine distribution plan, as of now, our pharmacy hasn't been given an exact date as to when we should expect the vaccines to be delivered. I know of some pharmacies in Oregon that have received the vaccine, but it's been sporadic. Most of the vaccines have been distributed to healthcare clinics and hospitals. In late January, we received a company-wide online training in preparation of receiving the vaccine. In the training, we learned about the different vaccines currently available, how to store and safely administer them, and what Safeway expects in terms of supply and demand for the vaccine.As a pharmacist, I was trained to give immunizations in pharmacy school, so administering the COVID-19 vaccine will be no different than giving a patient any other kind of vaccine, whether it's a flu shot or a shingles vaccine. Right now, Safeway is also training its pharmacy technicians (who aren't pharmacists, but assist with customers and help prepare prescriptions) to administer the vaccine. Sometimes vaccines require some reconstitution before they can be administered. This just means they may need to be diluted with a solution.Other vaccines, like <keyword id="44612" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Pfizer">Pfizer</keyword>'s covid vaccine, come with <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/states-panic-buy-ultra-cold-freezers-pfizer-coronavirus-vaccine-2020-11">specific storage instructions</a> and must be kept in cold temperatures with minimal light exposure, and once they are thawed must be used within a period of time. We keep that in mind when we are preparing vaccinations during our shifts.As pharmacists we are given storage and administration instructions by the supervisors at the pharmacy and the vaccine manufacturer. I also use resources like the <a href="https://pharmacist.therapeuticresearch.com/Content/Articles/PL/2021/Feb/Guide-Use-of-mRNA-COVID-19-Vaccines-for-Special-Populations">Pharmacist's Letter</a>, where healthcare providers can access peer-reviewed research and information. <h2>The most important part of administering the COVID-19 vaccines will be to determine eligibility.</h2>For example, right now we can only administer vaccines to those the local and state government have deemed eligible. For some counties, this may only be a select group of people, like those over the age of 65. If someone comes in and is registered to receive the vaccine but isn't 65, I would need a prescription in order to administer it. Pharmacists must always keep local health guidelines and laws in mind. We also are required to consider the person's medical history and current medications before giving them the vaccine. Volunteering to administer the vaccine has been encouraged; however, we are given the option of doing it or taking a store shift for someone else who has volunteered to give shots. I received the first dose of the <keyword id="4912868" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="moderna">Moderna</keyword> vaccine on January 28, and am scheduled to get the second at the end of February. During periods of overwhelming demand, like flu season, Safeway has set up clinics outside of the pharmacy to administer vaccines.
