To tap into festive demand, nearly 90% of consumers expect substantial discounts. Indian consumers shift gears toward luxury and sustainability in the auto sector: Survey

Total consumption rose by 6.2 per cent from 18.89 million tons in November and was 2.6 per cent higher than the corresponding figure for December last year. Sales of diesel, mainly used in the transport and farm sectors increased by 0.9 per cent month-on-month to 7.6 million tons. However, <keyword id="3146552" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="petrol-sales" source="Orion">petrol sales</keyword> fell by 4.5 per cent in December to 2.99 million tons compared to the previous month. LPG sales rose by 5.6 per cent to 2.63 million tons as more households are shifting to the clean gas from firewood nationwide. Sales of bitumen, used for making roads, jumped by 12.9 per cent from November reflecting the increase in construction in big highway projects that has gathered momentum. Naphtha sales jumped by 27.9 per cent to 1.33 million tons while fuel oil recorded a 9.6 per cent increase in December.

India's petroleum product sales hit seven-month high in December

IOC, the nation's largest oil firm, reported 81 per cent drop in standalone net profit in April-June - the first quarter of current 2024-25 fiscal year - to Rs 2,643.18 crore as opposed to a profit of Rs 13,750.44 crore a year back, according to a company filing. Net profit also declined sequentially, when compared to an earning of Rs 11,570.82 crore in March quarter. Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) posted 90 per cent drop in profit to Rs 633.94 crore as compared to an earning of Rs 6,765.50 crore in April-June 2023 and Rs 2,709.31 crore in the preceding March quarter. Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) net profit dropped to Rs 2,841.55 crore in April-June from Rs 10,644.30 crore a year back and Rs 4,789.57 crore in January-March, its filing showed. The three fuel retailers made extraordinary gains from holding petrol and diesel prices despite a drop in cost. The price freeze was justified in the name of recovering losses they had suffered in the previous year when they did not raise retail prices despite a surge in cost. The gains arising from the price freeze were eroded with petrol and diesel prices being cut by Rs 2 per litre each just before general elections and a fall in refining margins. Also, the three had uncompensated <keyword id="20866844" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="LPG-subsidy" source="keywords">LPG subsidy</keyword> - IOC booking under-recovery of Rs 5,156.23 crore in April-June, BPCL Rs 2,015.10 crore and HPCL Rs 2,443.71 crore, according to the filings. As per an order of the oil ministry, when market determined price (MDP) of LPG cylinders is less than its effective cost to customer (ECC), oil marketing companies (OMCs) have to retain the difference in a separate buffer account for future adjustment. However, as on June 30, 2024, the three firms had a net negative buffer as the retail selling price was less than MDP. The three retailers IOC, BPCL and HPCL had reported record profits totalling about Rs 81,000 crore in FY24 (2023-24), which was far more than their annual earnings of Rs 39,356 crore in pre-oil crisis years. This is because they resisted calls to revert to daily price revision and pass on softening in rates to consumers on grounds that prices continue to be extremely volatile - rising on one day and falling on the other - and that they needed to recoup losses incurred in the year, when they kept rates lower than cost. IOC in 2023-24 posted a standalone net profit of Rs 39,618.84 crore compared to Rs 8,241.82 crore in 2022-23. While the company could argue that FY23 was impacted by the <keyword id="21626914" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="oil-crisis" source="keywords">oil crisis</keyword>, the FY24 earnings are higher than even the pre-crisis years - Rs 24,184 crore net profit in 2021-22 and Rs 21,836 crore in 2020-21. BPCL posted a net profit of Rs 26,673.50 crore in FY24, higher than Rs 1,870.10 crore earnings in 2022-23 and Rs 8,788.73 crore in FY22. HPCL's 2023-24 profit of Rs 14,693.83 crore is compared with a Rs 8,974.03 crore loss in FY23 and a profit of Rs 6,382.63 crore in 2021-22, according to the filings. The losses in FY23 had led to the finance minister announcing Rs 30,000 crore equity infusion in the three firms. Mid-way through the year, that support was halved to Rs 15,000 crore. The support was to happen by way of equity infusion via a rights issue. But after the record profits of 2023-24, the equity infusion plan has now been scrapped. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had on February 1 last year, while presenting the annual Budget for the 2023-24 fiscal (April 2023 to March 2024), announced an equity infusion of Rs 30,000 crore in IOC, BPCL and HPCL to support the three state-owned firm's energy transition plans. In the interim budget that the finance minister presented in February this year ahead of the general elections, the capital support to the three oil companies was halved to Rs 15,000 crore. In the full budget for 2024-25, both plans have been scrapped. While other state-owned oil companies like Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) and GAIL (India) Ltd too have lined up billions of dollars of investment to achieve net-zero carbon emissions, the equity support was limited to the three fuel retailers, which had suffered huge losses in 2022 when they held retail petrol, diesel and cooking gas (LPG) prices despite a spike in raw material (crude oil) prices, following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The board of IOC and BPCL had last year approved rights issues to raise to Rs 22,000 crore and Rs 18,000 crore, respectively. The government was to participate in the rights issue. The three companies, which control roughly 90 per cent of India's fuel market, 'voluntarily' have not changed petrol, diesel and cooking gas (LPG) prices, resulting in losses when input costs were higher and profits when raw material prices were lower. They posted a combined net loss of Rs 21,201.18 crore during April-September 2022 despite accounting for Rs 22,000 crore announced but not paid LPG subsidy for the previous two years. Subsequent softening of international prices and government giving out LPG subsidies helped IOC and BPCL post annualised profit for 2022-23, but HPCL was in the red. In FY24, things changed dramatically, and the three firms posted record earnings.

But why are we witnessing this unexpected switch, and what does it spell for the future of driving? <h2>Waning EV enthusiasm</h2>A recent Park+ survey reported that 51% of Indian EV car owners expressed a desire to return to internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. This statistic — despite the study’s limited sample size of just 500 EV owners — is certainly surprising, given the evident success of India's push toward electrification with the attractive FAME and EMPS schemes. This isn’t even a special case; a similar survey revealed that 29% of EV-owners shared the same sentiment internationally — perhaps not that large of a number, but certainly not an unnoticeable one either. The number is even higher when you look at just the United States. EV-iction notice: Why are electric vehicle owners switching back to petrol and diesel (ICE) cars?

Fuel sales soared to the highest levels in February on the back of robust demand from the agriculture sector as well as transport picking up after the winter lull. March saw the seasonal slowdown kicking in with a rise in temperatures. <keyword id="3146552" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="petrol-sales" source="Orion">Petrol sales</keyword> decreased by 1.4 per cent to 1.22 million tonnes in the first half of March when compared with the same period of last year. Sales fell 0.5 per cent month-on-month, the data showed. Diesel, the most consumed fuel in the country, saw demand slip 10.2 per cent to 3.18 million tonnes from March 1 to 15 when compared with 3.54 million tonnes of sales in the same period a year back. Month-on-month the demand was down 4.6 per cent. During the first half of February, petrol consumption had jumped by almost 18 per cent year-on-year while <keyword id="998651" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="diesel-sales" source="Orion">diesel sales</keyword> were up nearly 25 per cent. The consumption of petrol in the first half of March was 16.4 per cent more than the Covid-marred first half of March 2021 and almost 23 per cent more than in the same period of 2020. Diesel consumption was up 11.5 per cent over the first half of March 2021 and 20.2 per cent higher than in 2020. While cold conditions slowed truck movements in January, the onset of spring revived demand in February. With the continued opening of the aviation sector, India's overall passenger traffic at airports inched closer to pre-Covid levels. Reflecting the trend, jet fuel (ATF) demand jumped 19.2 per cent to 2,94,900 tonnes during the first half of March when compared to the same period last year. It was 35.6 per cent higher than in March 2021 but 8.2 per cent lower than in March 2020. Month-on-month sales were almost flat. Sources said while domestic air travel is back to pre-Covid levels, international traffic is lagging because of continued restrictions in some countries. India's recovery has continued to gain momentum in recent months but has been accompanied by elevated inflation. This slowed the momentum a bit. The country's oil demand had been rising steadily since the easing of COVID-19 restrictions. Cooking gas LPG sales fell 9.7 per cent year-on-year to 1.18 million tonnes from March 1-15. LPG consumption was 7.1 per cent higher than in March 2021 and 3.6 per cent more than in March 2020. Month-on-month, the demand dropped 15.10 when compared to 1.39 million tonnes of LPG consumption during February 1-15, the data showed. In the US, this growing trend is close to reaching double digits in terms of penetration among personal vehicles. Even in India, the penetration is growing as domestic manufacturers increasingly gravitate towards the EV segment. In addition to Tata Motors’ EV versions of Nexon, Tigor and <keyword id="20075324" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tiago-ev" source="keywords">Tiago EV</keyword> and MG’s ZS — many other automakers are entering the EV lane too. Foremost among them is <keyword id="19909974" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="maruti-suzuki" source="keywords">Maruti Suzuki</keyword>, which is planning to launch its first EV by 2025, and Renault’s electric Kwid, Zoe and KZE are also expected to come to India soon. MG Motor India already has a couple of fairly successful EV models and plans to introduce many more soon. For foreign brands like Tesla, policy roadblocks on imports, proved to be a limiting factor so far. However, the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/auto/news/new-ev-policy-elon-musks-tesla-may-soon-enter-india-as-import-taxes-slashed-for-electric-vehicles/articleshow/108527306.cms">recent changes in the Indian policy landscape</a> lower the import taxes if the companies commit to manufacturing in India in the subsequent years. Such policy incentives are likely to attract even more global EV brands to India. But what do these new models of new-age tech cars mean to car buyers sitting on the fence? As per a recent analysis by CRISIL, the total cost of ownership (TCO) or total cost of ownership of passenger vehicles could work in favour of EVs in the next three years for Indian buyers. So, how does the math work for prospective owners? TCA is lower but the TCO may remain higher TCO includes the purchase price of a particular asset, plus operating costs over the asset’s life span. As of FY22, the TCO of EVs was 20-30% higher than that of all three variants which is petrol, diesel and CNG. “In FY27, we expect the economics to again remain the same. However, despite not-so-favourable cost economics, higher adoption has been witnessed initially by environment-conscious buyers,” said CRISIL. The latest analysis agrees with the <a href="https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/0361198120947089">earlier research</a> from <keyword id="20691574" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="world-resources-institute-india" source="keywords">World Resources Institute India</keyword> (<keyword id="20336071" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="wri-india" source="keywords">WRI India</keyword>) on TCO in India. The study highlighted that the TCO for EVs for personal use remains higher and may require additional financial incentives to be economically viable. The total cost of acquisition (TCA) on the other hand is lower for EVs as compared to other variants. TCA of an EV is 24% lower than that of a diesel variant, and 4% lower for a petrol variant. The TCA for an EV and a CNG variant is the same. This is due to lower registration charges for EVs amid high loan-to-value (LTV) ratios. Overall, the report expects EV penetration in the passenger vehicle segment to reach 6-8% by FY27 from a mere 1.3% in FY23. Meter down: How do EVs fare as cabs? Unlike in the PV segment, the cost dynamics are reversed for cab aggregators who want to drive in the EV lane – where even though the TCA is higher, TCO remains lower. In FY22, the TCO of EVs for cab aggregators was lower than that of petrol and diesel vehicles by around 29% and around 19%, respectively. However, the TCO of EVs is still higher than that of a CNG variant by around 13% even for commercial use. This is due to the higher running of a commercial passenger vehicle and high fossil fuel prices. The FAME-II subsidy provided by the Government of India incentivises the adoption of EVs for commercial use, including 2-wheelers, 3-wheelers, and buses for public transport. However, the TCA of an EV for a cab aggregator is still around 17% higher than that of a diesel vehicle, 26% higher than a petrol vehicle, and around 16% higher than a CNG variant. “In FY27, we expect the TCA of EVs to be lower than that of diesel and petrol variants, but higher than that of a CNG variant,” says CRISIL. The report expects the cab aggregator segment to lead the drive towards EVs, resulting in a 4% EV penetration by FY26. The taxi segment accounts for 10-15% of sales within passenger cars. However, a few challenges continue to linger, limiting the wider adoption of e-cabs on the road. A limited number of charging stations range anxiety and lack of large original equipment manufacturer (OEM) presence are hindering EV adoption. EVs used for personal use, however, are mostly charged at home, and charging infrastructure does not play a very high role there. “The lower battery cost (due to expected localisation led by the phased manufacturing programme or PMP) is expected to offset the lack of FAME subsidy and will help maintain the competitiveness of EVs against diesel and CNG variants for cab aggregators in the long run,” says CRISIL.

Demand for diesel, the most consumed fuel in the country <keyword id="15377301" type="TOPIC" weightage="60" keywordseo="Accounting" source="TOPIC" sourcekeytype="finance,investopedia" meta.keywordsubtype="null" meta.msid="92547403" meta.seopath="a/accounting" meta.entityname="Accounting" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="accounting">accounting</keyword> for about two-fifths of the demand, soared over 15 per cent to 3.45 million tonnes in the first half of April when compared to a year ago. Month-on-month sales rose 8.4 per cent when compared with 3.19 million tonnes of diesel consumed in the first half of March that had witnessed seasonal slowdown. Petrol sales rose about 2 per cent to 1.14 million tonnes during April 1 to 15 when compared with the same period of last year. Sales however fell 6.6 per cent month-on-month, the data showed. In the first half of March, petrol sales had fallen 1.4 per cent and diesel 10.2 per cent year-on-year. Consumption of petrol in April first half was 14.6 per cent more than COVID-marred April 1-15, 2021 and almost 128 per cent more than in the same period of 2020. Diesel consumption was up 24.3 per cent over April 1-15, 2021 and 127 per cent higher than in the same month of 2020. With the continued opening of the aviation sector, India's overall passenger traffic at airports inched closer to pre-COVID levels. Reflecting the trend, jet fuel (ATF) demand jumped 14 per cent to 2,84,600 tonnes during the first half of April when compared to the same period last year. It was 35 per cent higher than April 1-15, 2021 and 467.6 per cent more than the same period in 2020. Month-on-month sales however fell 3.8 per cent. India is enjoying steady growth, with support from the services sector as well as the industrial side of the economy. The country's oil demand was supported by strong industrial activity, industry officials said. In terms of products, diesel was the main driver of oil demand as there was a pick up in the agriculture sector, as well as requirements for power generation and industry. Use of the fuel in irrigation pumps and trucking supported diesel. Cooking gas <keyword id="6360114" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="lpg" source="Orion">LPG</keyword> sales rose 5.7 per cent year-on-year to 1.1 million tonnes in April 1-15. LPG consumption was 7 per cent higher than in April 1-15, 2021 and 9.2 per cent more than in the first half of April 2020. Month-on-month, the demand dropped 6.37 per cent when compared to 1.18 million tonnes of LPG consumption during March 1-15, the data showed. Diesel sales jump on agricultural demand

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has outlined his 10 climate pledges for a <keyword id="5142998" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Green-Industrial-Revolution">green industrial revolution</keyword> for 2,50,000 jobs and ending the sale of new petrol and diesel cars and vans by 2030. Covering clean energy, transport, nature and innovative technologies, the Prime Minister's blueprint launched on Tuesday will allow the UK to forge ahead with eradicating its contribution to climate change by 2050, particularly crucial in the run up to the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow next year. The plan -- which is part of the PM's mission to level up across the country -- will mobilise £12 billion of government investment to create and support up to 2,50,000 highly-skilled green jobs in the UK, and spur over three times as much private sector investment by 2030. At the centre of his blueprint are the UK's industrial heartlands, including in the North East, Yorkshire and the Humber, West Midlands, Scotland and Wales, which will drive forward the green industrial revolution and build green jobs and industries of the future. The Prime Minister's ten points, which are built around the UK's strengths, are: Offshore wind: Producing enough offshore wind to power every home, quadrupling how much it produces to 40GW by 2030, supporting up to 60,000 jobs. Hydrogen: Working with industry aiming to generate 5GW of low carbon hydrogen production capacity by 2030 for industry, transport, power and homes, and aiming to develop the first town heated entirely by hydrogen by the end of the decade. Nuclear: Advancing nuclear as a clean energy source, across large scale nuclear and developing the next generation of small and advanced reactors, which could support 10,000 jobs. Electric vehicles: Backing world-leading car manufacturing bases, including in the West Midlands, North East and North Wales, to accelerate the transition to electric vehicles, and transforming the national infrastructure to better support electric vehicles. Public transport, cycling and walking: Making cycling and walking more attractive ways to travel and investing in zero-emission public transport of the future. Jet Zero and greener maritime: Supporting difficult-to-decarbonise industries to become greener through research projects for zero-emission planes and ships. Homes and public buildings: Making homes, schools and hospitals greener, warmer and more energy efficient, whilst creating 50,000 jobs by 2030, and a target to install 6,00,000 heat pumps every year by 2028. Carbon capture: Becoming a world-leader in technology to capture and store harmful emissions away from the atmosphere, with a target to remove 10MT of carbon dioxide by 2030, equivalent to all emissions of the industrial Humber today. Nature: Protecting and restoring natural environment, planting 30,000 hectares of trees every year, whilst creating and retaining thousands of jobs. Innovation and finance: Developing the cutting-edge technologies needed to reach these new energy ambitions and make the City of London the global centre of green finance. The UK Prime Minister said: "Although this year has taken a very different path to the one we expected, I haven't lost sight of our ambitious plans to level up across the country. "My ten point plan will create, support and protect hundreds of thousands of green jobs, whilst making strides towards net zero by 2050. "Our green industrial revolution will be powered by the wind turbines of Scotland and the North East, propelled by the electric vehicles made in the Midlands and advanced by the latest technologies developed in Wales, so we can look ahead to a more prosperous, greener future." Following extensive consultation with car manufacturers and sellers, the Prime Minister has confirmed that the UK will end the sale of new petrol and diesel cars and vans by 2030, 10 years earlier than planned. However, it will allow the sale of hybrid cars and vans that can drive a significant distance with no carbon coming out of the tailpipe until 2035. The UK car industry already manufactures a significant proportion of electric vehicles in Europe, including one of the most popular models in the world. Responding to the announcements, Mohamed Adow, Director of Nairobi-based energy and climate think tank, Power Shift Africa Director, told IANS in a statement, "Nowhere suffers more disproportionately from the climate crisis than Africa, so it's good to see Boris Johnson stepping up and providing personal leadership on this issue. "As hosts of the crucial UN climate summit next year in Glasgow it has a key role in securing a new era of global action to cut emissions and support those already suffering from climate breakdown. The eyes of the world will be on Britain." <keyword id="7423108" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="California-governor-Gavin-Newsom">California Governor Gavin Newsom</keyword> has announced a ban against the sale of new gasoline-powered passenger vehicles in the most populous US state by 2035, aggressively moving further away from its reliance on climate change-causing fossil fuels. According to an executive order issued by Newsom on Wednesday, all new passenger vehicles sold in California are required to be zero-emission by the 2035 deadline, a target which would achieve more than a 35 per cent reduction in <keyword id="58357" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="greenhouse-gas-emissions">greenhouse gas emissions</keyword>, reports Xinhua news agency. "This is the most impactful step our state can take to fight climate change," said Newsom. "For too many decades, we have allowed cars to pollute the air that our children and families breathe. Californians shouldn't have to worry if our cars are giving our kids asthma. "Our cars shouldn't make wildfires worse - and create more days filled with smoky air. Cars shouldn't melt glaciers or raise sea levels threatening our cherished beaches and coastlines," the Governor added. California officials noted that the transportation sector is responsible for more than half of the state's carbon pollution, 80 per cent of smog-forming pollution and 95 per cent of toxic diesel emissions. In addition, California will develop regulations to mandate that all operations of medium- and heavy-duty vehicles will be 100 per cent zero emission by 2045 where feasible, with the mandate going into effect by 2035 for drayage trucks. The executive order will not prevent Californians from owning gas-powered vehicles or selling them on the used car market. Newsom said the move is essential to meeting California's air quality and climate goals. "The climate change crisis is happening now, impacting California in unprecedented ways, and affecting the health and safety of too many Californians," he said in the executive order. "We must accelerate our actions to mitigate and adapt to climate change, and more quickly move toward our low-carbon, sustainable and resilient future." California officials insisted that climate change has played a key role in worsening wildfires in the state which has so far over 3.6 million acres as of Wednesday. Responding to Newsom's announcment, Oregon Governor Kate Brown on Wednesday said that she will follow the California requirement and look into policies to accelerate transportation electrification in her state. According to Brown, the executive action by Newsom was a transformative step toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the transportation sector. "In Oregon, we have already set ambitious goals for increasing the number of zero-emission vehicles on our roads. As the chair of the Western Governors' Association, I have launched <keyword id="9992293" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-electric-vehicles-roadmap-initiative">the Electric Vehicles Roadmap Initiative</keyword> with my fellow governors to lay out the path to the adoption of zero-emission technology, from consumer incentives and tax exemptions to building the electric vehicle infrastructure we will need across the West," she noted. Brown argued that the transportation sector is the largest single source of greenhouse gas emissions in Oregon and pollutants from diesel and gasoline combustion pose immediate public health risks to the state. "We cannot adequately address climate change without moving to zero-emission vehicles," Brown said. "With the impacts of climate change all around us, including a more intense and destructive wildfire season than any in recent memory, we must meet this challenge."
