New Delhi[India], January 2(ANI): Several transporters and auto-driver associations across India are on protest against the new law on hit and Run incidents. Under the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), which replaced the Indian Penal Code, drivers who cause a serious road accident by negligent driving and run away without informing the police or any official from the administration can face punishment of up to 10 years or a fine of Rs 7 lakh. Earlier, the punishment in such cases was two years in the IPC. Private transport operators claim the law discourages drivers and may lead to unjust punishments. They claim that the drivers could be subject to mob violence when they attempt to transport the injured to hospitals and demand the repeal of the law. On the protest by transport associations, and drivers against the new law on hit-and-run cases, All India Motor &amp; Goods Transport Association President, Rajendra Kapoor said "Our only demand from the govt is that the decision should have been taken after having consultations with our stakeholders. There was no discussion with anyone on this, and no one was asked about this. There should have been prior meetings and consultations." "The protest has been announced by the members of All India Motor &amp; Goods Transport Association. There should be a discussion on this issue. A misleading situation is created now. People are not completely aware of the new law", Rajendra Kapoor further added. "Only Home Minister Amit Shah spoke of the new law in Lok Sabha. Even the ministers don't know of the new law properly for now. There is no protest staged by our organisation. We are conducting a virtual meeting today at 1:30 pm with transporters from across the country. After that, a press conference will be conducted at 3:30 pm in which we will reveal our future course of action", Rajendra Kapoor revealed. "Protest can never lead to a solution. We have full faith that the government will hold conversations with our members and make necessary amendments based on our recommendations.", Rajendra Kapoor further added. Meanwhile, transporters and drivers staged protests across states. Private bus and truck drivers on Monday enforced a 'chakka jam' (traffic jam) across the state of Madhya Pradesh in protest against a <keyword id="20027963" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="new-hit-and-run-law" source="Orion">new hit-and-run law</keyword>. A similar protest also broke out in the Chhattisgarh capital, Raipur, where bus drivers staged a demonstration against the new central law. Riled over low margins, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=petrol+pumps&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">petrol pump </a>owners are planning to shut their outlets on Sundays from May onwards and also operate only from 9am to 6pm to cut costs. 
 
They have threatened to call a “no purchase petrol and diesel day” on May 10 and subsequently shut outlets every Sunday. The weekly Sunday off will start from May 14. 
 
They are demanding higher margin by the<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Indian+government&amp;sortorder=effectivedate"> government</a>. 
 
The petrol dealers association said the 'No Purchase Day' is aimed at telling state-run oil marketing companies that they are opting for 'war path'. 
 
They had earlier withdrawn a strike in January after the OMCs promised dealers to revise commission. They said the agitation would continue till the business becomes viable and higher margins are announced. The decision was taken at a meeting of the consortium of Indian Petroleum Dealers, which has 53,000 members. 
 
"The decision would be applicable after May 10 unless the government intervenes. The resolution has been taken as the oil companies have not released the dealer margins since 2011," said Ravi Shinde from the Petrol Dealers' Association. 
 
Currently, many outlets function between 6 am and 10 pm while some are open round the clock and seven days a week.

He also said in Telangana alone, over 1,400 truckloads of petrol and diesel was not lifted yesterday and today by petroleum dealers in the state. 
 
"We have stopped purchasing petroleum products yesterday and today. From tomorrow, we will sell petrol or diesel or any other product according to government office timings like 9 AM to 6 PM. We will also not sell on Sundays or any other government holidays. If the government does not listen to us then we will call for a strike on November 15," Amaram told PTI.

Car owners can now breathe a sigh of relief as the petroleum dealers who had earlier planned a two-day nationwide no-purchase strike today and tomorrow have called it off. They have decided to halt the agitation programmes as oil companies have promised to look into their demand for hiking commission before December 31. 
 
 
The Consortium of Indian Petroleum Dealers (CIPD) said they would go on a full-fledged strike on November 15 to press for their demand to increase commission. 
 
Besides, the dealers had said petrol pumps will be selling fuel for limited hours from Saturday and will not operate on Sundays or Government holidays, according to a report by news agency. 
 
However, they decided not to go ahead with these programmes after holding talks with representatives of oil companies in Mumbai. 
 
"Our discussions with oil companies yielded results. They promised to address our issues (hike in commission) before December 31. So we are calling off our agitation programmes," CIPD Joint Secretary Rajiv Amaram told the news agency. 
 
The CIPD has demanded implementation of the recommendations made by the Apoorva Chandra Committee in 2011. 
 
The committee recommended commissions of over Rs 4 for petrol and about Rs 3 for diesel per litre. The then UPA Government hiked the commission on petrol to Rs 2.15 and diesel to Rs 1.28 from Re 1 and Re 0.70, respectively. 
 
Amaram said the dealers are supposed to get the arrears also from 2011. The dealers had stopped purchase of fresh stocks of petrol and diesel at 54,000 fuel outlets across the country from oil companies from yesterday. In Telangana alone, over 1,400 truckloads of petrol and diesel were not lifted yesterday and today by petroleum dealers in the State.

They say that efforts to stay engaged with Iran are getting more complicated and transactions will have to cease. The internal-combustion engine requires a tank filled with an extremely volatile, flammable liquid; that liquid is then pumped under great pressure to an engine where, typically, it's mixed with air, sprayed into combustion chambers, ignited, and exploded, over and over and over again.The energy from the fuel is transformed from potential power to kinetic power, with the up-down movement of the cylinders mechanically converted from linear motion to rotational motion, routed to the wheels through several shafts and a transmission packed with gears.Rube Goldberg would be impressed. It's a testament to the skill of engineers that this entire clattering apparatus doesn't fly apart due to its own violent nature. Oh, wait, internal combustion engines can literally blow themselves to pieces. These days, that's usually in a race car being driven under extreme conditions on a track, but old-timers such as yours truly can remember when motors would throw a rod, blow a head gasket, seize up, or when cars would burn after their gas tanks were compromised.They also sometimes combust when they're just sitting around. <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2017/11/04/business/bmw-recall-fire.html">BMW recalled about a million cars in 2017</a> to address such a risk - which is, in fairness, extremely low in modern automobiles. But if you know even just a little bit about engineering, you understand that an electric vehicle's technology is not that much different from your iPhone or laptop meeting up with a blender. In fact, a Tesla car is basically a large remote-control car, it's just too challenging for a child to operate.My father and uncle were both engineers, and my grandfather was an amateur mechanic, so I grew up around the demystification of machines. But I don't think my insights are unique. Anyone can plainly see that the design of an electric vehicle is potentially safer than an internal-combustion car. (That takes nothing away from the engineers who have been working on ICE cars for decades; they've created magnificent levels of safety from a dangerous initial idea.)Still, it's worth considering that to get my iPhone battery to spark and burn, I'd have to smash it with something heavy, a lot, and it might not combust (the battery also might malfunction on its own and short-circuit). Runaway thermal events, a.k.a. battery fires, are scary - more so because thermal runaway with lithium-ion batteries can happen in seemingly random ways. There have been Tesla accidents that have involved fires and tragic loss of life.Adding to the concern is that electric cars are a new thing. And new things provoke anxiety. The danger of internal-combustion engines is something we've lived with for over 100 years. We've seen Indy 500 race cars explode in flames; we've witnessed countless cars blow up in movies; and many of us witnessed a burning vehicle on the road. Experience is our guide, and experience can be far more powerful, with justification, than reason.<h2>We should pay more attention to gas-vehicle fires - but there are way too many of them</h2><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><a href="http://pictures.reuters.com/C.aspx?VP3=SearchResult&amp;VBID=2C0BXZ0ZPSNXU&amp;SMLS=1&amp;RW=2048&amp;RH=1036">REUTERS/TIM WIMBORNE</a>A parking lot full of cars.</div></div></div>Every single automaker on Earth builds and sells vehicles that can and do catch fire. But Tesla gets most of the attention when its vehicles catch fire.Yes, this is partly driven by the incidents where Tesla cars have ignited without any apparent reason. But it's also because of the media's tendency to report news on anything and everything, good and bad, about the carmaker.CEO Elon Musk points this out all the time. He argues that journalists should cover vehicles that aren't Teslas when they catch fire, under whatever circumstances, because there are so many more gas-powered car fires annually.OK, point taken. But that would be quite difficult. Why? Because <a href="https://www.usfa.fema.gov/downloads/pdf/statistics/v19i2.pdf">according to 2018 data from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)</a>, 171,500 "highway vehicles" of various types caught fire in the US alone between 2014-2016. One in eight fires that fire departments respond to is a vehicle fire, FEMA reported.That's 157 vehicle fires per day. You'd need some pretty diligent robot journalists to keep track of that much carnage. (As for EV fires, Business Insider <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-tesla-cars-catch-on-fire-2019-4">counted 20 Tesla fires since 2013</a>, while Chevy dealt with at least one fire in its Volt hybrid-electric vehicle in 2011 by recalling the car. Other automakers have seen a small number of fires since EVs began to hit to road in appreciable numbers since 2010, with Fisker Automotive losing 16 stored vehicles that were flooded by Hurricane Sandy in 2012.)I'm not going to entirely let Tesla off the hook here. As the company builds and sells more cars, it's possible that its fire stats will become significant, at which point the design of its batteries might be legitimately questioned.But you know who'll do that? Engineers.
