Net profit also declined sequentially, when compared to an earning of Rs 11,570.82 crore in March quarter. <br /><br /> Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) posted 90 per cent drop in profit to Rs 633.94 crore as compared to an earning of Rs 6,765.50 crore in April-June 2023 and Rs 2,709.31 crore in the preceding March quarter. <br /><br /> Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) net profit dropped to Rs 2,841.55 crore in April-June from Rs 10,644.30 crore a year back and Rs 4,789.57 crore in January-March, its filing showed. <br /><br /> The three fuel retailers made extraordinary gains from holding petrol and diesel prices despite a drop in cost. The price freeze was justified in the name of recovering losses they had suffered in the previous year when they did not raise retail prices despite a surge in cost. <br /><br /> The gains arising from the price freeze were eroded with petrol and diesel prices being cut by Rs 2 per litre each just before general elections and a fall in refining margins. <br /><br /> Also, the three had uncompensated <keyword id="20866844" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="LPG-subsidy" source="keywords">LPG subsidy</keyword> - IOC booking under-recovery of Rs 5,156.23 crore in April-June, BPCL Rs 2,015.10 crore and HPCL Rs 2,443.71 crore, according to the filings. <br /><br /> As per an order of the oil ministry, when market determined price (MDP) of LPG cylinders is less than its effective cost to customer (ECC), oil marketing companies (OMCs) have to retain the difference in a separate buffer account for future adjustment. However, as on June 30, 2024, the three firms had a net negative buffer as the retail selling price was less than MDP. <br /><br /> The three retailers IOC, BPCL and HPCL had reported record profits totalling about Rs 81,000 crore in FY24 (2023-24), which was far more than their annual earnings of Rs 39,356 crore in pre-oil crisis years. <br /><br /> This is because they resisted calls to revert to daily price revision and pass on softening in rates to consumers on grounds that prices continue to be extremely volatile - rising on one day and falling on the other - and that they needed to recoup losses incurred in the year, when they kept rates lower than cost. <br /><br /> IOC in 2023-24 posted a standalone net profit of Rs 39,618.84 crore compared to Rs 8,241.82 crore in 2022-23. While the company could argue that FY23 was impacted by the <keyword id="21626914" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="oil-crisis" source="keywords">oil crisis</keyword>, the FY24 earnings are higher than even the pre-crisis years - Rs 24,184 crore net profit in 2021-22 and Rs 21,836 crore in 2020-21. <br /><br /> BPCL posted a net profit of Rs 26,673.50 crore in FY24, higher than Rs 1,870.10 crore earnings in 2022-23 and Rs 8,788.73 crore in FY22. <br /><br /> HPCL's 2023-24 profit of Rs 14,693.83 crore is compared with a Rs 8,974.03 crore loss in FY23 and a profit of Rs 6,382.63 crore in 2021-22, according to the filings. <br /><br /> The losses in FY23 had led to the finance minister announcing Rs 30,000 crore equity infusion in the three firms. Mid-way through the year, that support was halved to Rs 15,000 crore. The support was to happen by way of equity infusion via a rights issue. <br /><br /> But after the record profits of 2023-24, the equity infusion plan has now been scrapped. <br /><br /> Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had on February 1 last year, while presenting the annual Budget for the 2023-24 fiscal (April 2023 to March 2024), announced an equity infusion of Rs 30,000 crore in IOC, BPCL and HPCL to support the three state-owned firm's energy transition plans. <br /><br /> In the interim budget that the finance minister presented in February this year ahead of the general elections, the capital support to the three oil companies was halved to Rs 15,000 crore. <br /><br /> In the full budget for 2024-25, both plans have been scrapped. <br /><br /> While other state-owned oil companies like Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) and GAIL (India) Ltd too have lined up billions of dollars of investment to achieve net-zero carbon emissions, the equity support was limited to the three fuel retailers, which had suffered huge losses in 2022 when they held retail petrol, diesel and cooking gas (LPG) prices despite a spike in raw material (crude oil) prices, following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. <br /><br /> The board of IOC and BPCL had last year approved rights issues to raise to Rs 22,000 crore and Rs 18,000 crore, respectively. The government was to participate in the rights issue. <br /><br /> The three companies, which control roughly 90 per cent of India's fuel market, 'voluntarily' have not changed petrol, diesel and cooking gas (LPG) prices, resulting in losses when input costs were higher and profits when raw material prices were lower. <br /><br /> They posted a combined net loss of Rs 21,201.18 crore during April-September 2022 despite accounting for Rs 22,000 crore announced but not paid LPG subsidy for the previous two years. <br /><br /> Subsequent softening of international prices and government giving out LPG subsidies helped IOC and BPCL post annualised profit for 2022-23, but HPCL was in the red. <br /><br /> In FY24, things changed dramatically, and the three firms posted record earnings.

The government is expected to announce the FAME 3 scheme with an outlay of ₹10,000 crore.<br /><br />While the exact details of the scheme will only be known once the budget is announced, it will be aimed at boosting demand by subsiding the cost, while also promoting local manufacturing of key components.<br /><br />“In the upcoming budget, we advocate for initiatives and subsidy structures without segment caps which will in turn foster innovation and growth across multiple segments. Recent discussions surrounding the implementation of FAME 3 present a notable opportunity to enhance EV adoption in India,” said Niraj Rajmohan, CTO and Co-Founder, Ultraviolette.<br /><br />"Proposed measures to promote e-buses and enhance payment security are crucial for accelerating sustainable transportation. Comprehensive support for the entire EV ecosystem is essential. Anticipated policy reforms like FAME-III and increased funding for critical EV segments will foster holistic industry growth," said Kartikey Hariyani, Founder and CEO, Charge Zone.<br /><br /><h2>Petrol and diesel under GST</h2>One of the frequent demands recently has been to bring petrol and diesel under goods and services tax (GST) to bring the fuel prices under control. Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has said that the government will try to bring petrol and diesel under GST.<br /><br />At present, the central government levies excise duty on petrol and diesel, while the state government imposes value-added tax (VAT) and sales tax.<br /><br /><h2>Incentives for hybrids</h2>While electric vehicles have long been subsidised by both state and central governments, hybrids have not received the same love. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari had earlier this year<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/auto/news/gadkari-vows-to-eliminate-petrol-diesel-vehicles-in-india-bats-for-lower-tax-for-hybrid-cars/articleshow/108936085.cms"> pitched</a> for lower GST on hybrid vehicles.<br /><br />“The proposal to reduce GST on hybrid vehicles to 5% and to 12% for flex engines has been sent to the Finance ministry which is considering the requisition,” Gadkari said.<br /><br />Companies like Maruti Suzuki have a strong presence in hybrids and have a lot to gain from incentives, while companies like Tata Motors who do not have hybrid technology may take a hit on EV sales. With the government looking to reduce dependence on petrol and diesel cars, hybrids may finally get some incentives in the upcoming budget.<br /><br />The UP government has already started offering incentives to select hybrid cars.<br /><br /><h2><keyword id="22433272" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vehicle-scrapping" source="keywords">Vehicle scrapping</keyword></h2>Industry bodies such as the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) have sought incentives for vehicle scrapping. These are vehicles that have crossed a certain age and are being scrapped keeping in mind the pollution.<br /><br />While a policy is already in place, the stakeholders are looking for increased incentives, especially for commercial vehicles such as trucks and buses, which account for most of the emissions.<br /><br /><h2>PLI scheme</h2>Automakers are also looking for increased incentives under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, for both ICE and EVs. It can be gruelling to choose between a gourmet meal and your mom’s homemade biryani — more often than not, the familiar wins out.<br /><br />Despite the buzz around electric vehicles, a growing number of drivers in India and the world are hitting the brakes on their electric vehicle (EV) journey and revving up their old petrol and diesel cars. But why are we witnessing this unexpected switch, and what does it spell for the future of driving? <br /><h2>Waning EV enthusiasm</h2>A recent Park+ survey reported that 51% of Indian EV car owners expressed a desire to return to internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. This statistic — despite the study’s limited sample size of just 500 EV owners — is certainly surprising, given the evident success of India's push toward electrification with the attractive FAME and EMPS schemes.<br /><br />This isn’t even a special case; a similar survey revealed that 29% of EV-owners shared the same sentiment internationally — perhaps not that large of a number, but certainly not an unnoticeable one either. The number is even higher when you look at just the United States. According to McKinsey &amp; Co., 46% of US <keyword id="22369438" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="electric-vehicle-owners" source="keywords">electric vehicle owners</keyword> are “very” likely to purchase a gas-powered vehicle the next time.<br /><h2><keyword id="21396729" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="range-anxiety" source="keywords">Range anxiety</keyword> remains a major roadblock</h2>While the world has seen massive leaps in EV tech over the past few years, many still complain that the primary concerns still prevail. For instance, several cite the persisting inadequacy of <keyword id="20111395" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="charging-infrastructure" source="keywords">charging infrastructure</keyword> as a primary reason for the shift back to ICE vehicles. While urban areas in developed countries may boast a fair number of charging stations, the time taken to charge and faulty stations remain significant problems for a daily EV long-distance commuter.<br /><br />For instance, one user sparked up a conversation on Reddit after explaining that they had begun to consider moving back to a hybrid of regular gas vehicles since they wanted to explore the countryside. This is a sentiment that reflects broader consumer concerns that influence purchasing decisions.<br /><br />“Once I was in Big Bear there was only two DC chargers in town, one of which was out of order. There was a line to use them. It was overall an unpleasant experience and took up a lot of time we could have spent actually enjoying Big Bear,” another responded, noting that this was just one of many unpleasant experiences they’ve experienced with the charging infrastructure. “Most of the time at least one or two chargers are out of order and it's just a pain to charge. I love EV's but the infrastructure isn't adequate and reliable enough for me to ditch an ICE car completely.”<br />    <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="111341259" title="EV charging is so bleak that some owners are considering going back to gas-powered cars, survey finds" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div>Further, you have to reconcile with the fact that these are still concerns for the urban rich, and that rural and less developed regions are still lagging significantly behind in this matter. Take India, for instance, where the charging infrastructure is still in its nascent stages, despite years-long government efforts. Long queues at charging stations, inconsistent availability, and longer charging times compared to refuelling <keyword id="21283001" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ICE-cars" source="keywords">ICE cars</keyword> are major deterrents for the average Indian EV consumer.<br /><br />Further, range anxiety continues to be a significant barrier, especially in countries like India that value long-distance trips. Despite advancements in <keyword id="20172158" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="battery-technology" source="keywords">battery technology</keyword>, two-wheeler EVs boast a maximum range of only 200-300 kilometres, while cars have a 300-400 kilometre range.<br /><h2>Cost and practicality concerns</h2>The initial cost of EVs also remains higher than that of their ICE counterparts, despite decreasing battery prices. For many consumers, especially in price-sensitive markets like India, this cost difference is substantial. For instance, Ford and General Motors have recently announced a downscaling of their EV production plans due to slower-than-expected market uptake.<br /><br />Even <keyword id="107096" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tesla" source="Orion">Tesla</keyword> — the very company that arguably made EVs “cool” in the first place — has found itself in an awkward position having to fan some flames away. Not only is the Musk-led company struggling to entice more people into buying their cars, studies have also shown that car buyers are connecting better with EVs built by more traditional automakers than Tesla owners.
